Biography

Descendant
Descendant of First_Fleet convict Ann Forbes.

Note: I am a WikiTree Team member as well as an avid WikiTreer.

There is nothing I enjoy more than hunting down more members of my family tree, except, perhaps, helping others hunt down their own mysteries.

I was a fairly early user of WikiTree and have enjoyed the journey. Chris Whitten, the owner/operator of WikiTree has created a wonderful tool and made it free for all who share the journey. WikiTree is about sharing! We are all part of one great big family tree, but many wish to focus a little more narrowly (it can get quite overwhelming).

If you enjoy the journey and also like helping others, there are many ways you can do it on WikiTree. First, you must love sharing information (subject to any privacy concerns). You must also agree to WikiTree's Honour code. This is mainly about collaboration and respect for others.

There are also many projects by WikiTree members on various subjects. Some of these members give selflessly of themselves in an constant attempt to improve the quality of information that is on WikiTree. Volunteering is a way of life for many! If you like helping people, look into the various projects and see if one matches an interest of yours.

As a WikiTree Team member, I have been given additional powers to help others. This in mainly in the area of opening the Privacy levels of profiles which are over 200 years old to the most open level, which is what is required for such profiles on WikiTree (Open Profile Requests, OPR).

I can also be of assistance in helping with merges where a profile manager may be un-responsive. Every avenue must be exhausted before this occurs.

Please the help section of WikiTree for more information on UPM's and OPR's.

If I can be of assistance to any WikiTreer, drop me a line.

My personal interests include: Photography, astronomy, walking, bushwalking, cycle touring, ten pin bowling, arts and crafts, movies and cinema, theatre, science fiction, history, genealogy, technology, environment, social issues.

My main family tree interests are: Oxley (from Kent, England 1839 to Australia), Standen (from Kent, England, 1841), Hayes, Wall, Bech (from Korsor, Denmark).

I see that you have merged William Miller (1844 - 1928) and his wife Mary Bowdern (1839 - 1916), thank you. I am fairly new at WikiTree as I only joined in 2023. In January this year I was going to add William and Mary but in 2023 I had found his son William James Miller on a Google search. It was his WikiTree profile and had William and Mary as his parents. So I searched for Willam on WikiTree but no result. When I did add William it do not show any possibilities. I find this very curious. The main thing is it has now been sorted out.

On another matter William's Father James is an interesting character. I have not been able to determine positively who his father is. Do you have any information on that?

There was an Open Profile Request for Gilliam-434 which you managed. The death date was before 100 years ago. I am at a loss for why the others were changed. I can see that they were changed by me, but I cant find a record on my side of doing so. The only thing I can think of is that I may have mixed up Opening from profiles from a wikitree member who is no longer active (I can receive up to 100 requests a day). If this was the case you have my apologies. You can certainly use the Bulk profile to change back any profiles that were born after 150 years ago and/or died more than 100 years ago. Please consider opening some of these profiles as we prefer to keep profiles as Open as Possible for collaboration, but it is your choice. Reaching out--my mother-in-law was Japanese. Can you suggest what I might can do as strictly American and unlikely to travel to Japan?

A few notes--the name Fugi-i seems to be like Smith, she refused to speak to me and even would not tell her other grandson much, she and my husband are deceased. If we could access records, I would have her son's son's permission. I know via my husband's high school journal that her father was killed in Burma/Myanmar possibly March 27, 1944. I doubt he was shot by an American sniper as very few were in that part of the world at that time according to U S A military notes. It seems more likely that he died or starved to death based on events in Burma of the Japanese. He may have been an engineer or builder of bridges. I know she was born on Hokkaido in December 1933. Her home was near/on beach--they were fishermen. She lived near a prisoner of war camp so they knew they would not be bombed by the Americans. She worked on or near the Air Force Base during Korean War and had my husband at Misawa Air Force Base, Aomori-ken, Japan. She was able to fight with knives and her lady family ancestors may have been ladies who protected high born women. One time in Washington, D.C. the family was approached by would-be mugger(s) and she gave baby to her husband and sent the robber away. Or so my husband said and he could tell some stories. As you can see, there is really nothing much to go on. I am not even sure what her name was--Kimuko or what her father may have been called. My husband did not know names-he just called his grandmother grandmother. He lived in Japan a while as he was born before marriage and before his dad got permission to bring them back to Alabama. They also went back to Japan as an Army posting when he was in grade school. I will appreciate any advice you have.

Hi Paul. Thank you for merging Dowsley-32 into William Thomas Dowsley (1909-1975), of which I was manager (I have since removed myself, for my own privacy). But how did you do this? Hi Jim

I am one of the WIkiTree team. Every day I process dozens of long outstanding merges. Usually it is because one of the profiles has a Private privacy level and the manager of that profile has been absent for many years. In that case the merge will never be completed without team intervention. If you have any outstanding merges because of such reasons, just complete a UPM (Unresponsive Profile Manager) request for the profile and it will be completed or the profile will be Orphaned (if the details of both profiles are identical) for you to complete. The profiles I have completed merges for have had a UPM submitted by a WIkiTreer who has noticed it was outstanding. There are quite a few WikiTreers who look for these incomplete merges to help tidy up WIkiTree. I have had as many as over 100 in a day, but usually around 20 or so per day. Hope this answers your enquiry. Regards Paul

No, I'm wrong! The February 2024 one was a different merge with surname Dowsley. I do not believe I have ever received notification of a proposed merge into Dowsley-7. How can that be? Are you able to see when the merge into Dowsley-7 was proposed?

The merge request was actually for his wife. The merge of duplicate husbands were a follow on from that. It was a simple merge. If you look at the change log all the details of the profile you were manager of were maintained as the duplicate was essentially an empty profile.

So a merge of a profile for which I was manager was completed using super-powers without my being notified. I am happy with the resulting biography, but I still do not think you should have done it that way. The reason is that my privacy was breached by the exposure of my email address to the other manager, on the Trusted List Privacy page. I have now removed myself as manager to avoid this, but that may have been too late. If you had proposed the merge and I had been notified, I would have had the opportunity to remove myself immediately, avoiding any privacy risk.

The Digger CDROM sets ( a set of 4) are not online, unfortunately. They are expensive to purchase but I do have a copy. If you wish to peruse them, many libraries with a family history section have the CDROM's available for in library usage. The Victorian Births, Deaths and Marriages registry usually has the same information available online: https://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/

I added the link as an accompaniment to the grave photo which I took and added to the profile. It does not replace any existing source. I always try to add as many sources as I can to a profile (they cross check each other). Regards Paul

My maternal grandfather was Frederick John Farrant at birth but somehow had his first name changed to Bernard when he emigrated to the USA in 1880's, In some of my research, his ancestors ended up in New Zeeland - somehow connected to a Rev. Nobbs who you are probably familiar with. It's interesting to me to see so many Farrant's down under. Bernard passed in 1946 (I was only 5) and really never had many memories of him - he was living in Auburn, Cayuga County NY, at his passing. Don't know if this is of any interest to you but if so, I'd be happy to provide what I know of that line in my family.
