Hugh Doherty was born in Surrey, England.

Hugh Lawrence Doherty was a British tennis player and six-time Grand Slam Champion. He competed at the 1900 Olympics in Paris, winning the men's singles and doubles. He was the first British player to win the US National Championships (forerunner of the US Open).

He was born in 1875 in Wimbledon, London.^[1] He was the youngest son of William Doherty and his wife Catherine Ann Davis, and the younger brother of tennis player Reginald Doherty. He was baptised on 1 January 1876 at Wimbledon, Surrey.^[2]

He was educated Westminster School and Trinity Hall, Cambridge.

He died in 1919, aged 43, in Broadstairs, Kent.^[3]

He and his brother Reginald were inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1980.
