make the world a stranger place

@theothin / theothin.tumblr.com

(Othin | She/They) I post about cartoons, games, politics, AI, math, and anything else on my mind. Often involves liveblogs of things I'm watching. Icon by larahaide.

someone accused me of feigning a sexual attraction to spiders for clout. there's easier ways to get clout, man.....

Someone once called my 22 minute hand sewn 18th century buttonhole tutorial video "Empty, clout driven content" so I think some people will just say anything.

Had a soul-searing moment where I sat unblinking trying to figure out what a "hand sewn 18th century butthole" could be for, until I read that again.

YouTube recommending some random influencer doing a dramatic reading of one of my own Tumblr posts to me for the fifth time today like, okay, technically you're 100% correct that the content of that video is congruent with my demonstrated interests, but the thing about that is

One the one hand, I basically agree with a lot of the negative reviews that the Kickstarter campaign for Mina the Hollower was not as forthcoming as it could have been about exactly what kind of game they were making, and the end product does feel like a bit of a bait and switch.

On the other hand, as much as I was expecting a retro Zelda-like, the concept of a full-featured soulslike that adheres to the graphical and technical limitations of the Game Boy Color is objectively hilarious, so even if I'm not particular into soulslikes as a genre I feel like I have to give them a pass, because what the fuck.

audio On 😂😂😂

For blind/visually impaired folks: The instruments being used to recreate these songs are two kazoos, a plastic shopping bag, a metal colander pot, a basting brush, an empty water jug, and a thin sheet of plastic, all being played by two people in an empty parking garage for the acoustics

For deaf/HoH folks: The songs being played here are near perfect renditions of the 20th Century Fox theme, the Pirates of the Caribbean theme, and the Mission Impossible theme

I can't get over how he just grabs her head and shakes while she plays kazoo to make the opening trill to the mission impossible theme

In case anyone was wondering, this is what studying percussions with a teacher who's fan of jazz and has access to lots of instruments in the band room is like. He hands you a tambourine with sandpaper stuck to it, or gives you a triangle without a string and tells you to balance it on your hand, or gives you the "wrong" mallets for an instrument, or tells you to use 4 mallets at once instead of 2, or has you hit your chest where your lungs make the sound echo and go "hoo" like a gorilla because that's literally what it says on the sheet music

You learn anything and everything can be an instrument. You learn certain drums can be tuned and certain instruments used for melodies like marimbas can be used for the rhythm and you learn that certain vibraphones have a thing you can plug in that gives the sound a sort of vibrato. You get given the goofiest looking instruments - professional instruments! - that look like toys or plain wooden boxes but make a delightful special sound. You learn your hands can do two completely different things in so many different ways, and your feet can do yet other things at the same time as well, and your voice is just as much an abstract instrument as anything else

...Man, I miss the stuff that teacher had us do. Screw orchestras that give us boring parts. You should see us when we're the main character. You should see us in a crown

Why does youtube have such a principled opposition to just showing me videos from specifically the channels I have subscribed to in reverse chronological order. Why do they insist on making seeing this more tedious with every single update. What is even the benefit here.

Frenzy, my beautiful wife who I love very much, just put on a sea shanty cover of Rockstar by Nickelback and said "isn't this fire?" 😑

You know what I shouldn't have gone to the website that's famous for people having bad taste in music to make a joke about the bad music my wife listens to, I shoulda known everyone would be on their side for this one

interested in the recent phenomenon i've noticed where youtubers known for challenging and ultimately torturing themselves release videos in which they go "this experience sucked, it was miserable and for my own mental health i had to stop". i wonder if we're reaching a point where the challenge that viewers will find engaging has surpassed what is fun for people to actually play

Quick bit of info for other creators who like to have Youtube open when you do creative stuff:

They are making background play a premium feature. This includes desktop too.

What that means is, if you have any video playing on your computer (doesn't matter if Windows, Mac, or Linux) and you switch from your open browser with the active Youtube video to your art program, it detects this and stops playing that video. It also doesn't matter what kind of video you want to watch, which is especially annoying if it's one of those 2 hours long ones that are specifically made to be background noise. Or if you turn off your screen, like you would do when you play rain sounds to help you fall asleep, for example.

They're apparently still in the testing phase, so not everyone has this - let's call it an update for now- but there are enough people online reporting the site going dark that it's noticeable. In turn, that means this new "feature" is coming for all of us sooner or later. So, please, if you are having trouble with Youtube lately it's very likely this and refreshing the page or blocking the page visibility API might help. It is not your internet being broken, no matter how hard Youtube is trying to gaslight you into thinking that.

For the Sims community in particular this means that you won't be able to watch speedbuilds or tutorials while you play the game anymore. At least not on the same device. Again, this is on Youtube (which is intentionally breaking itself right now) and not your computer or wifi.

in times like these, Freetube is your friend

Obviously you should never trust anything a YouTuber says but it's pretty funny for someone to open their video with "This video contains no AI generated content" and then immediately say a bunch of wrong things that I'm fairly sure a modern LLM would have been able to help them fact-check because it would have simply looked up the documentation online.

staff infos: Series: Futari wa Pretty Cure (aka Futari wa Precure or just Pretty Cure) Series Director/OP Storyboard: Daisuke Nishio Key animator for this cut: Tatsuo Yamada (presumed, per sakugabooru) Character designer: Akira Inagami, whose settei you can see here

I have not been able to find out the sakkan (animation director) for this sequence, and as usual it's effectively impossible to find out who did douga/shiage/bg paint.

This is the series which launched the Pretty Cure (Precure) franchise! I'll admit I don't really go here but looking at animation like this, I can definitely see why it exploded.

the funny thing about She-Ra is it had this incredible five season emotional arc for the character relationships expressed as a children’s cartoon in which one twenty minute episode might involve an insecure pirate singing sea shanties about how he thinks it’s fun to have friends.

discoursedrome said: this seems to be almost the default/normative children’s cartoon nowadays and MAN I am jealous

you don’t have to be jealous you can just watch it!

the funny part is I’m comparing it with adult shows in which any individual episode may be packed with confronting events not suitable for children while the overall structure is a bucket of warm slop.

also the friendship sea shanty episode was great
