What do you think about Hank Green using AI?
Context for anyone who doesn't know: Someone accused Hank of using AI to write his videos because some of his phrasing "sounded like AI." Hank denies that he writes scripts with it, but said he does use it to find research papers (that he then reads and interprets on his own) and occasionally to bounce writing ideas off of. After a few days of internet meltdown, he posted an apology and explained that he thinks he's getting too dependent on AI and is going to cut back on his usage because he doesn't think his current work process is healthy for him.
I'm way late on this one, but since I'm talking about AI - I think it's literally fine and it got blown way out of proportion by a bunch of people who seem to have it out for Hank. He used it as a search engine and then verified the info it gave him - what could possibly be the issue with that, other than "AI bad and anyone who uses it for any reason bad"?
Hank also had a recent "controversy" with his knitting video - I watched that video and there was like, one line that was kind of dismissive towards knitting as an art form. I didn't see any real problem with it but people still constantly bring up the video as proof that he's a misogynistic fraud and that his videos are full of errors.
And now some people who skimmed the whole AI thing are spreading the idea that he writes all his stuff with AI, and sanctimonious fans are graciously "forgiving" Hank for the heinous crime of essentially using a search engine, and the whole thing is yet another in what is becoming a string of "controversies" around Hank that upon investigation turn out to be nothing.
Given what happened to John on this website, I'm fairly suspicious. Not that anyone is intentionally instigating things, but just that the same parasocial mores are going to wind up creating a similar situation, and I hope Hank taking a step back and dialing back production a little bit might help prevent that.

"it's bad for the environment!" it is decidedly one of the less bad things for the environment, you just care because it's something you already hate so it's the path of least resistance to looking like someone who cares. data centers being built in bad locations is not The Fault of AI it is the fault of elon musk who would do stupid shit like this with or without ai
"it's fascist technology" unreasonable claim for a technology being used and developed by multiple companies, countries and especially open source technology that is accessible to the common layman. chatgpt is one of many many models in the world. you are misusing words because it makes your argument look better
"it's soulless" you're using metaphysics to determine your opinions on a material reality in which not everyone shares your beliefs
"it's not real art" not an objective claim nor viewpoint, people also said this about digital art and frankly some still do
"it's ugly" you have not updated your opinion since 2024
"it makes you lazier" people say this about anything that makes life easier
"it rots your brain" using a new skill will cause the other skills you have to degrade from disuse that's just a part of being a person. you can maintain your skills by continuing to practice them while also making mundane work easier
"it's contributing to the rampant spread of misinformation" ☝️ yes and i think we should be more careful & critical about what we read and watch as a result, however people also said this about photoshop so it isn't a unique evil
"i just think it's bad" you have stopped trying to have a defensible opinion and are instead harrumphing and stomping your feet

Someone once called my 22 minute hand sewn 18th century buttonhole tutorial video "Empty, clout driven content" so I think some people will just say anything.
Had a soul-searing moment where I sat unblinking trying to figure out what a "hand sewn 18th century butthole" could be for, until I read that again.
every day I have to scroll past theories saying Susie is abandoning reality or whatever when the chapter literally ends with her saying this
Plus you have to consider why she's telling Kris that and I think it's because she knows Kris made the Dark Fountain
but instead of thinking about it as part of some greater plan, she probably thinks it was just to spend time with her and have an "adventure".
and it's in, like, the most gentle possible way. She doesn't even directly blame them for it even though it's their fault, just says "we" can't mess up. and reiterates how much she has enjoyed their adventures. and thanks them for walking her home.
but the whole conversation reads like she's trying to bring Kris back to the reality that people are in real danger now.
