summary: three separate blurbs of you doing the not saying i love you back before hanging up the phone tik tok prank on your partner.
themes: fluff, established relationships
authors note: coming from an anon request, hope you enjoyed.
you weren’t sure how jaafar was going to react to this prank, and you honestly almost felt bad doing it because you know he’d probably immediately think something was wrong. jaafar always came around and saw the humor in the end, though, so you pushed the little flicker of guilt aside as you got everything ready. you had your phone that you specifically use for filming tik tok videos set up in front of you, quietly recording while you and jaafar chatted on the phone, your personal phone sitting nearby with him on speaker.
he had a break in filming right now and wanted to call and see what you were doing, because he always misses you when he has to be on set all day. even after two years together, he still found whatever little pockets of time he could to hear your voice, and you loved that he never treated wanting to talk to you like something he needed a reason for.
“are you hungry, baby? i can pick up lunch and come to set… i know you probably haven’t eaten,” you say and even though you can’t see jaafar, you know he’s biting his lip to hide the embarrassed smile because he hasn’t eaten. you knew him too well by now, knew how easily he could get wrapped up in whatever he was doing and let something as simple as eating slip his mind, especially on a long day of filming.
“i’d love to have lunch with you, baby. i’ll let antoine and graham know you’re coming, you know they’ll always make sure you can get in,” he says and you smile, already feeling that familiar warmth settle into your chest at how happy he sounded at the thought of seeing you.
“okay, text me what you want and i’ll pick it up, and i’ll be there soon,” you say.
“you’re so good to me, baby, thank you,” jaafar says and you smile. there was so much sincerity tucked into his voice that you almost forgot for a second that you were supposed to be messing with him.
“it’s barely even half of all the things you do for me, jaafar,” you say and that’s when he laughs, the sound immediately pulling your smile a little wider.
“trust me, you spoil me everyday. i’ll see you soon, okay? i love you,” jaafar says and that’s when you look at your camera that’s recording because the prank is that you’re not going to be saying it back, and you’ll see how long it takes him to call back.
the words came so naturally from him that your instinct was immediately to return them, just like you always did, and you had to consciously stop yourself before they could slip out. instead, you pressed your lips together for a second, already fighting the smile threatening to give you away even though jaafar couldn’t see you.
“okay, baby… see you soon,” you say and end the phone call and you let a soft laugh out as you look at the camera, the guilt already creeping back in because you knew your boyfriend well enough to know there was no chance that had gone unnoticed. “he’s definitely going to call back once he registers that i didn’t say it back,” you say and on the other side of los angeles as he sits in his trailer, that’s exactly what jaafar was doing.
he raised an eyebrow as he looked at his phone, which was now just his homescreen, which was a picture of the two of you. for a few seconds, he stared at it as the end of the conversation replayed in his head, the absence of the words he was so used to hearing from you suddenly much louder than they should have been.
he was wondering if he did something wrong, or if you were mad at him, his brows slowly furrowing as he tried to figure out what could have changed between the beginning of the call and the end of it. but you couldn’t have been mad at him because you just offered to bring him lunch and spend time on set with him. everything had been completely normal. you had sounded like yourself, you had called him baby, you were literally getting ready to drive across los angeles just because you knew he probably hadn’t eaten.
and yet, he had told you he loved you, and for the first time in longer than he could remember, you hadn’t said it back.
when your phone screen lit up with jaafar’s name and picture, you looked at the camera and giggled again, your lips pressing together as you tried to compose yourself before answering and putting it on speaker. you already knew exactly why he was calling, which only made it harder to keep the amusement out of your voice. “hey, baby, did you forget something?” you ask.
“no… but i think you did,” jaafar says and you bite down on your lip so you don’t laugh, your eyes flickering toward the camera as you fight the smile threatening to spread across your face.
“what do you mean? you haven’t even text me your order yet,” you say, deliberately keeping your voice innocent, and jaafar lets out a quiet sigh.
“before you hung up, i said i love you,” jaafar says.
“yeah,” you respond and you’re still trying your hardest to hold your laugh in, dropping your gaze for a moment because looking directly into the camera while pretending you have no idea what he means is making it nearly impossible.
“you didn’t say it back,” he says.
“baby, i always say it back,” you say, your cheeks beginning to ache from how hard you’re fighting your smile.
“i know, which is why it’s strange that this time you didn’t,” he says and you cover your mouth to suppress your laugh, your shoulders trembling beneath the laughter you’re forcing yourself to swallow. “you’re not mad at me, are you? i know i’ve been coming home late a lot because of filming but—”
the laughter dies in your throat the moment you realize where his mind is going, and the playful look on your face softens as you cut him off because you don’t want him blaming himself.
“baby, i’m not mad at you, i promise. i’m literally getting dressed right now so i can go get us food, and don’t worry about coming home late, you always let me know when you’re gonna be late, and i know how much this movie demands of you,” you say, your teasing slipping away as your voice turns gentle, wanting him to hear how sincerely you mean every word.
jaafar’s heart melts as he listens to you, his earlier worry easing beneath the warmth of your reassurance because you have always been understanding and you’ve never made him feel bad or guilty when he’s had to cancel or reschedule plans because of the movie.
no matter how unpredictable filming became, you never held it against him, and even now, when he had briefly convinced himself that his late nights might finally be getting to you, you were already getting dressed to bring him lunch just so the two of you could steal some time together in the middle of his day.
“okay, baby. i love you so much for it… see you soon,” jaafar says and you smile, relief settling over you now that you know he isn’t worrying anymore, but the second you hear those three words again, that playful glint returns to your eyes as you look toward the camera, knowing you’re about to get him again.
“see you soon, baby,” you say and hang up again and then you let out the laughter you’ve been holding in, immediately covering your face as it spills freely from you now that you don’t have to worry about jaafar hearing it.
this time your phone rang again, quicker than the last time, barely giving you a chance to recover, and you giggled again as you looked down at his name flashing across the screen before answering. “yes, my love?” you ask, the sweetness in your voice making what you’re doing to him even worse.
“why aren’t you saying it back?” he asks and you can’t hold it in anymore, you start giggling hard enough that jaafar immediately knows you’re up to something, your attempts to answer him disappearing beneath your laughter as you lean away from the phone. “are you filming a tik tok?” he asks and you laugh again before taking a deep breath, trying to calm yourself enough to finally put him out of his misery.
“yes, baby, it was just a prank. you know i love you so much,” you say, your laughter softening into an affectionate smile as you finally give him the words he had been stubbornly calling you back to get, and jaafar lets out a breath.
“i don’t like that prank, don’t do that one or anything similar like that again,” he says and you laugh even harder, hearing the seriousness beneath his otherwise soft voice and knowing you had officially found one tik tok trend that jaafar had absolutely no interest in ever participating in again.
“okay i promise, i love you,” you say again, just to give him extra reassurance, your voice warm as you make up for the two times you had purposely left his affection hanging.
“y’all are gonna get me in trouble with this prank,” you say to your followers as you’re live on tik tok, already laughing softly as the comments continue rolling across the screen. they told you to do the “i love you” prank on your husband jermajesty, where if he says it before the end of a phone call, you don’t say it back. jermajesty was currently out, picking up dinner for the two of you, which gave your followers the perfect opportunity to convince you to try it while he had absolutely no idea what you were doing at home. you look down and read some of the comments, your smile growing because they clearly knew your husband almost as well as you did.
true, jermajesty is clingy af he’ll notice immediately you didn’t say it backher phone is gonna ring with him calling back so fast lmaobut that’s what’s gonna make it even funnier
you shake your head and grab your phone, trying not to laugh at how confident everyone was that jermajesty would immediately notice. you have a separate phone to make tik tok’s with, leaving your personal phone free for the prank, and then you dial jermajesty’s number. he picks up on the first ring, just like you knew he would, and you put him on speaker.
“hey, mama, what’s up? i’m still waiting for the food,” he says and you smile, the familiar sound of his voice making your expression soften despite the prank you were about to pull on him.
“hi, baby, nothing, i just miss you… you remembered to ask for extra ranch, right?” you ask and jermajesty chuckles.
“yes, i wouldn’t forget,” he says and you smile to yourself, knowing that after being married to you, there was no chance he would come home without remembering something as simple as your extra ranch. “you miss me already and i’ve only been gone for 20 minutes,” he teases as he laughs.
“20 minutes too long, and don’t get all high and mighty, you’re always whining about missing me when i leave the room for five minutes to go to the bathroom,” you say and jermajesty laughs, the easy sound filling the room through your speaker, and you fight back a laugh as you read the comments coming in, your followers immediately latching onto the fact that neither of you could even pretend you weren’t equally attached to each other.
just two completely whipped people telling each other exactlyif my marriage isn’t like this, i don’t want itthey really are the cutest couple in the world
“okay that’s different,” he protests and you laugh, already able to imagine the look on his face as he tries to defend himself.
“what’s different about it, maj?” you ask and then in the background, you hear his name called.
“oh, baby, that’s the food. i’ll call you right back in the car, okay? i love you,” he says and you smile, your eyes immediately flickering toward the phone recording your live as you hear the exact three words you had been waiting for.
saying them back was so instinctive after all this time that you almost did it without thinking, your lips parting before you remembered the prank at the last second. you press them together for a moment instead, barely containing the laugh already bubbling in your chest as you force yourself to end the call in a way you never normally would.
“okay, baby, see you soon,” you say and then hang up the phone, while laughing, the strange feeling of ending a call with your husband without saying you loved him back making you shake your head. you look at the camera and watch the comments roll in, your followers just as eager as you were to see how long it would take him to realize what was missing.
cue jermajesty calling back in 3… 2… 1oh lord, let’s see how long it takes
“he’s probably about to—” you cut yourself off when your phone starts ringing and you laugh while holding it up to the camera for them to see, your entire face lighting up with an amused, knowing smile because you hadn’t even gotten the chance to finish your prediction before your husband proved you right. the comments immediately start moving even faster across the screen, but you’re laughing too much to read them as you answer and put it on speaker. “hey, baby, you’re in the car already?” he asks.
“nah, hold on girl, what was that?” he asks and you bite down on your lip so you don’t laugh, glancing toward the live with wide eyes at the seriousness already creeping into his voice.
“what was what?” you ask innocently.
“don’t play dumb with me, mama. why you didn’t say you love me back?” he asks.
you press your lips together even tighter, fighting the grin pulling at the corners of your mouth because there hadn’t even been a chance for him to get into the car before the missing words bothered him enough to call you back.
“maj, what are you talking about?” you ask.
“before we hung up, i said i love you, and you said see you soon. what the hell is that?” he asks and you do laugh a little, the incredulous edge in his voice making it nearly impossible to keep pretending you have no idea what he means.
“you said your name was called for the food so i was saying see you soon,” you say, keeping your tone deliberately reasonable even though your smile is giving you away to everyone watching the live.
“mama,” he says exasperated.
“jermajesty,” you respond and he chuckles, the familiar back and forth making your chest warm even while you’re actively trying to annoy him. “can you hurry up and get home? i’m hungry,” you say with a soft whine in your voice and jermajesty instantly softens, because no matter how determined he had been to confront you about what you did, hearing that little whine from you pulls his attention somewhere else just as quickly.
“okay, okay, i’m coming right now,” you say and you hear him start the car, the sound rumbling through the speaker as you smile to yourself. “i love you,” he says again, a little more emphasis on the phrase, making it painfully obvious that this time he is giving you another chance to fix what you did.
you glance at the live again, your eyes sparkling with barely contained laughter as you knowingly let that second chance pass right by.
“thank you, baby, bye,” you say and hang up again and then you start laughing more as you look at the livestream again, your shoulders shaking because you already know you’ve pushed your luck. “y’all are about to get me in so much—” you didn’t even finish the sentence before your phone started ringing again.
your mouth falls open before you dissolve into another fit of laughter, holding your phone toward the live because he somehow called back even faster this time. you read some comments as you answered, barely able to keep up with them as they fly across the screen.
oh, he’s not playing with her.girl, prank over, tell that man you love him before he loses his mind.
“hello?” you ask when you put the call on speaker, forcing as much innocence into your voice as you can manage while your cheeks already hurt from smiling.
“HELLO??? don’t hello me. why are you ignoring me?” he asks, his voice a little louder, which makes you almost laugh, and you have to turn your face away from the phone for a second to get yourself under control.
“i’m not ignoring you. i picked up the phone,” you say and you hear jermajesty groan, his frustration only making your lips twitch harder because you know exactly what he means and you’re refusing to give it to him.
“mama, i swear imma be on your ass when i get home if you don’t tell me you love me right now,” jermajesty says and you laugh, finally losing the battle completely as the sound spills out of you.
“baby, you know i do,” you say, warmth slipping naturally into your voice despite your determination to keep the prank going, because even while you’re teasing him, there isn’t a single part of you that wants him to genuinely question how loved he is.
“then say it. i love you,” he says.
“i know, i heard you,” you say and jermajesty lets out a loud sigh, and you cover your mouth as another laugh threatens to escape. he has now given you the words three separate times, and each time you’ve managed to dance around returning them, something you know you would never normally do to him.
“okay girl, keep playing with me and see what happens,” he warns, but you can hear the joke underneath his tone and you start laughing, finally hearing that he’s caught onto the fact that there has to be something more behind your sudden refusal to say something you tell him every day.
“okay, okay, it was a prank, i’m sorry. you know i love you. i love you so much, you big baby,” you say and jermajesty laughs while shaking his head, the affection in your voice finally giving him what he had been stubbornly calling back for, and you can feel yourself soften now that the prank is officially over.
“and i still got something for you when i get home,” he says and your eyes widen as you turn to the live, your expression immediately sending the comments into complete chaos.
oh sis is bout to get dicked downhe got something for her??? whewwwww yeah we knowwell girl… have a great time when he gets home
you laugh out loud at the comments, your face warming as you shake your head at how quickly your followers took his words somewhere else, and turn your attention back to your phone. “okay, can’t wait. i love you,” you say, your voice sweet now that you’re no longer withholding the words from him, and instead of responding, jermajesty hangs up the call, making you stare at your phone for half a second before you laugh even harder.
the realization hits immediately. after chasing you down across three separate phone calls just to hear you tell him you loved him, he had deliberately left you hanging the second you finally said it first.
but you can take a dose of your own medicine.
pulling the “i love you prank” was a little easier than you expected. the two of you were on facetime while you were getting ready and you were also recording a new tik tok to do the prank, your other phone positioned where it could capture you without giving away what you were doing. randy couldn’t see the other camera, so he didn’t know you were filming, he just likes watching you get ready, content to stay on facetime even while you were focused on your makeup and hair. you were about to go to brunch with a few of your friends and randy’s sister genevieve, and he had been keeping you company throughout your entire routine.
“and then after brunch, i get you for the rest of the day, right?” randy asks and you smile as you look at him on the facetime call, the hopeful little note in his voice making your expression soften.
“yes, baby, i promise. after brunch, i’m all yours for the rest of the day,” you say and randy smiles, visibly satisfied by the promise that once you were done spending time with everyone else, the rest of your day belonged to him.
you finish the finishing touches of your makeup, and randy smiles as he watches you brush out your hair again, your silk press perfectly framing your face and features. even after four years together, there was something about the way he could simply sit there and watch you that made warmth settle in your chest, his attention never making you feel scrutinized, only adored.
“are you driving or is gen getting you?” he asks.
“i’m driving, so i’ll just come over right after… or if i have too many bottomless mimosas, either me, gen, or my friends will call you to come get me,” you say and randy laughs while shaking his head, already able to imagine exactly how that phone call would go. he’s always thought you were adorable when drunk because you get even clingier than you already are, somehow finding a way to stay attached to him even more than usual once the alcohol makes you completely shameless about wanting all of his attention and affection.
“don’t worry, i’ll have my phone glued to my side just in case,” he says and you smile, knowing without a doubt that he means it. whether you ended brunch perfectly sober and drove yourself over or called him giggling because you needed him to come get you, randy would be ready for you.
“perfect. okay, i’m done getting ready so i’m gonna go, but either me or someone will call you when i’m on my way to you, depending on how many mimosas we have,” you say and randy laughs.
“okay, baby, have fun. i love you,” randy says and you smile, your eyes instinctively softening at the familiar words before you remember the phone recording you nearby.
for the last three years, answering him had become as natural as hearing him say it in the first place, and you almost returned the words without thinking. instead, you swallow them down, already feeling a little guilty as you force yourself to keep your expression casual.
“thanks, baby. see you later,” you say as you hang up, purposely not saying the words that have been automatic to you for the last 3 years of your 4 year relationship with randy. the second his face disappears from your screen, your carefully controlled expression breaks into an amused smile and you look into the camera for your tik tok.
“he’s gonna kill me, y’all,” you say and as if on cue, your phone starts ringing again as randy is facetiming you again.
you immediately laugh a little at how quickly his name has appeared back on your screen, your prediction barely having time to leave your mouth before he proves you right. you take a second to get yourself together before answering, letting a neutral expression come over your face as you stand up to make it look like you’re about to leave, hoping the movement will make you look distracted enough to sell the idea that nothing unusual had happened.
“baby,” randy says and you raise an eyebrow, looking back at his face on your screen and seeing the confusion already written across his features.
“yes, baby, is something wrong?” you ask and randy’s eyebrows furrow. he thought maybe you didn’t hear him, but then he started shaking his head because that wouldn’t be the case. he had said it clearly, and there hadn’t been any bad connection or rush to get off the phone that could explain why the words he was so used to hearing from you never came.
ever since telling each other i love you for the first time, a year into your relationship, your conversations always ended with those words. whether you were on the phone or spending time together in person, no matter what, you both always said i love you. three years of hearing you say it back meant randy knew the rhythm of your goodbyes by heart, and this time, you had deliberately left out the part that mattered most to him.
“did i do something to upset you?” he asks and you fight to keep control of your features, the genuine concern in his voice making the corners of your mouth threaten to twitch even as a little guilt settles in your chest. you knew he would notice, but seeing how quickly his mind went to wondering whether he had done something wrong almost makes you want to give in already.
“no, baby, why would you think that?” you ask innocently and randy’s brows furrow in confusion, his eyes searching your face through the screen as though the answer might be somewhere in your expression.
“so why didn’t you say it back?” he asks.
“say what back?” you ask and for a second, randy feels relief, thinking maybe you didn’t hear him. his expression eases slightly as the simplest explanation seems to fall into place, because you not hearing him made much more sense than you hearing him and choosing not to return something the two of you had said to each other every day for the last three years.
“i said have a good time and that i love you,” he says and you nod, keeping your face perfectly composed despite the laughter already bubbling inside you.
“yeah, baby, i heard you. i said thank you,” you say and you almost laugh at how randy’s mouth falls open in shock. whatever relief had just crossed his face disappears immediately, replaced by complete disbelief as he stares at you through the screen.
“since when do you start saying thank you when i tell you that i love you?” he asks.
“i said thank you because you told me to have fun,” you say furrowing your brows in fake confusion and randy took a deep breath, his eyes narrowing slightly as he tries to understand how you could somehow be missing the very obvious point he was making.
“okay… i love you,” he says, slowing the words down enough that there is absolutely no chance for you to misunderstand what he wants from you this time.
you have to press your lips together for a second, because the patient way he gives you another opportunity to say it back nearly breaks you.
“okay, baby, see you later,” you say and you hang up again and then laugh while looking in the camera, finally letting your expression crumble now that randy can’t see you anymore. “he’s so confused i almost feel so—” you cut yourself off when you hear your phone ringing again.
your eyes widen as you look down at the screen, laughter immediately spilling out of you because he hadn’t even given you enough time to finish feeling bad for him. you answer and randy’s face again fills your phone, his expression making it clear that he has no intention of letting you escape this conversation a second time.
“baby,” he says again and you laugh, the simple way he says it carrying enough exasperation to make it even harder to keep the prank going.
“okay, your love, but you won’t say you love me back,” randy says and you giggle a little while biting down on your lip, your eyes briefly darting toward the camera because you know anyone watching the tik tok is going to hear exactly how personally he’s taking your choice of words.
“baby, i’m gonna be late, i gotta go,” you softly whine and randy shakes his head, completely unmoved by the sweetness in your voice this time.
“and you’re gonna be even later if you don’t tell me that you love me back,” he says and you bite down on your lip, warmth spreading through your chest beneath all of your amusement because he is apparently willing to hold you hostage on facetime until he gets the three words he wants.
“randy, i have to go!” you exclaim as you laugh, your voice climbing with playful desperation as you glance toward the time.
“and you can go… after you tell me you love me,” he says and you smile while biting your lip, his expression settling into patient determination as though the two of you could stay exactly like this all afternoon if that was what it took.
“but you know i do,” you say.
“so, say it,” he says and you giggle, your resolve finally crumbling beneath how persistent he is. after four years together, there was something ridiculously endearing about the fact that knowing you loved him still wasn’t enough for randy when he wanted to hear you say it.
“okay, okay, baby i love you so so much, can i go have mimosas now?” you ask and randy smiles back satisfied and he nods, the confusion and concern that had been sitting across his features finally disappearing the second he hears the words.
“yes, you can. i love you,” he says and you smile, feeling that familiar instinct to answer him immediately now that the prank has officially run its course.
but one last spark of playfulness wins.
“bye,” you say with a bright smile before hanging up.
you laugh again harder when instead of getting a call back, you get a text from randy instead saying. “now when i don’t come pick you up, don’t be crying,” and your laughter grows as you stare at the message, knowing you had finally pushed him far enough to get your own little consequence for playing with him.
you laugh even harder at the text before ending your video and making your way out for brunch.
