You knew what Michael wanted. He'd wanted it since the beginning of your marriage hell, even before that. He'd told you during those restless nights of his, when sleep wouldn't come and he'd end up seeking you out for comfort. He would lay beside you and talk for hours about the future, about how one day he'd move out of Hayvenhurst, buy a huge house, and fill it with a big family. A family he wanted with you more than anything.
You remembered those conversations like they happened yesterday.
It had been a hot summer day, the kind of heat that made you want to do absolutely nothing. But Michael always pushed himself. He was a perfectionist to his core, and you'd learned a long time ago that there was no stopping him once he set his mind on something. Instead, you'd learned to love that part of him.
You were sitting by the pool that afternoon, wearing one of his oversized shirts over your bathing suit. Your feet dangled in the water, kicking back and forth lazily beneath the surface. The humidity was unbearable, making strands of hair stick to your forehead and neck like glue.
The back door slid open behind you.
"Bunny? You out here?" You tilted your head back to look. Bunny. A nickname he'd given you years ago after deciding you acted like one sometimes. He stood in the doorway, glancing around until he spotted you. The second he did, he made his way over and crouched beside you.
He looked insane standing out here in the middle of summer wearing a button-down and jeans.
