I want to write a character relationship so complicated that when an outsider finally dares to ask, "so what's going on between you two?" the only response is a dramatic sigh, a far off stare, and a flashback sequence that lasts half a dozen chapters (but still only just scratches the surface)
write a character who everyone calls by their last name. some people just like to be addressed by their last names only. maybe you could say its because…
- the character is trying not to get attached to anyone (so they dont even get on first name basis)
- they’re proud of their family. ane
- they’re overly formal
- they’re trying to seem cool or mysterious
or maybe its just for aesthetic reasons. its up to you to find out!!
I hate the feeling of knowing a character is going to make a stupid decision.
as a writer, I'm sitting there, clutching my pearls like, "why would you ever do that??" when I literally wrote the character that way lol
I'm the one making them act stupid, or in other words - I am the number 1 enabler :)
I love nothing more than when a really stoic, sarcastic, nonchalant character falls in love with some idiot. Like you have the group of MCs sitting around for some reason-- and the doofus is doing smth kinda silly. the pov character turns to the stoic character, expected them to chide them or something, but instead they see just like the barest glimpse of an expression of pure love ARUGHH they're just like :] and the pov character is like "oh no they're down BAD"
it's just.. I love a soft inescapable 'I love you'. it's endearment, it's yearning, it's whimsy, it's so much more <333
Villain and Hero Dialogue
Thank you to everyone who's liked and reblogged my other ones, if you ever decide to write something with one of those dialogues, please tag me! I'd love to read them!! Anyway, back to this :D
The Monologue Hero: "Finally." — cracks knuckles — "Ready?" Villain: "Ready." — pauses — "Wait. I have to explain my evil plan first." Hero: "What? No —" Villain: "It's the rules. You know the rules." Hero: "There are no rules." Villain: "Then why are you wearing spandex? Checkmate."
The Ghost Hero: "How are you here? I buried you. I checked the pulse." Villain: "You were always bad at finding them." Hero: "This isn't — you can't —" Villain: "I played dead. Very Juliet." — looks around, disappointed — "And you're still here. What a shame. I was expecting a tragic love story."
The Inspection Villain: "Get up. Let me see the damage." Hero: "Don't —" — flinches as villain grabs shoulder, pulls them up — "I said don't touch me." Villain: smirks "You're flushing. Is it the injury, or my hand? I said 'damage,' not 'desire.' Though I can check for both."
The Begging Villain: "Beg. I want to hear it." Hero: — silent, stares hard — Villain: "Nothing? Not even for your life?" — sighs, playful — "I suppose I'll have to make you. That's more fun anyway."
The Escape Hero: "You won't get away this time!" Villain: "...You said that the past three times." Hero: "You escaped after throwing a smoke bomb!" Villain: "I literally just climbed out a window."
The Wrong Person Hero: — pushes open the door forcefully — "Stay where you are, *Villain name*!" Villain: — doesn't look up — "I said east wing. Try not to break anything else. Or I'll deduct from your pay." Hero: "I'm not your — I'm me. The hero. Your nemesis." Villain: — finally glances — "Oh. I thought that cape was the butler's."
The Costume Villain: "You changed your suit." Hero: "So did you." Villain: "I upgraded. You... downgraded. Less spandex. More trauma. Very modern. Very boring. Bring back the cape."
The Threat Hero: "How dare you! I'm going to—" Villain: "Kiss me? Finally. I've been sending signals for years." Hero: "What?" Villain: — gasps, delighted — "Is this what they mean when they say 'he was lost for words?' How romantic. How rare. How documented."
The Hostage Hero: "Let him go!" Villain: "Speak of the devil. Or angel. Or whatever you are." Hostage: "Please. Please get me out of here. He won't stop. Three hours. Just talking. About your thighs." Hero: "What did you do to him?" Villain: "Do? I described you. Your cape maintenance. Your moral consistency. Your hips. He's fragile. I'm thorough."
The Demand Hero: "Give me the files! Now!" Villain: "Give? Without a chase? Without the tension? You want me to just... hand them over?" — clutches chest — "So forward. So fast. We haven't even had dinner."
Something I really love in superhero stories is whenever the villain and hero just start to feel like… coworkers. Like yeah they’re intrinsically at odds but at the same time, like they see each other every Tuesday? Every time they land a hit on the other person they go like “🙊🙊” and have to fight the urge to help them get up. Like yeah you’re ‘enemies’ but you’ve known each other for seven years you’ve developed a connection.
new dynamic unlocked “I’d trust him with my life, but not my middle name”
I want more character who are leaders. Not characters who has leadership forced upon them or whatever— I am just so fascinated with characters who are good at and who LIKE leading a crowd.
I want more charismatic cult leaders. I want leaders who make difficult decisions. I want secret organizations. I want, when a plan goes wrong, for everyone’s heads to turn to the one person they trust to lead them out of trouble.
this post was motivated by me rereading the Odyssey and then reigniting my epic the musical obsession. Like that one moment in Polyphemus where the crew realizes that they messed up IMMEDIATELY the crew shuts up and turns to Odysseus who is forced to be like “hey there :]”
or how in Mutiny, even when everyone starts to go against Odysseus, the second they’re in real danger they SHUT UP and listen to their leader
ugh I love leader character pls pls pls give me more leader characters more recent than the freakin odyssey
Something I sometimes do (and a trait I recently gave to one of my characters) is calling people/one specific person by their full name. I can’t even explain why I do it. Like there’s this one guy I see like once a week and when I talk about him to others I go like “oh nice it’s Jack Taylor!” or “it’s my best friend Jack Taylor!” or “have you seen Jack Taylor yet?” (not his real name obviously)
I think it’s a (maybe I’m biased) cute/unique character quirk I’d love to see more of! In general, don’t forget to give your ocs kinda random dialogue distinctions to make them stick out!!
I am so happy I just realized that I ACCIDENTALLY made two of my characters act incredibly consistent. The two MCs are fighting, and character A said smth like:
"Why do you keep running from our problems, hoping that there's something better waiting around the corner? Because there isn't! Because it only ever gets worse!"
And then character B responded with smth like: "Why are you so scared to even hope for something better? Why are you so convinced that you deserve to suffer?"
And this was supposed to be a throwaway argument, to set up a real conflict down the line. But then I realized that this is so accurate to my two mcs? Like so far, they've faced three-ish hurdles, and in all of them character A was like "oh okay this is my life now I guess" while B was like "hell no lets leave now" so they both react to obstacles in equal and opposite ways
And this, coincidentally, matches up perfectly with their upbringings?? Like A had a deeply (fantasy) religious family, which pretty much raised him to not complain and relish in a status quo while character B had an isolated heretic for a father and a pirate mother which taught him to be free-thinking and oh my god??? its all coming together and I didn't even mean it too?
So I just tripped on a goldmine of contrasting fatal flaws and now if a beta reader points out my consistency I get to twirl my evil mustache and say it was all a part of my masterplan but it WASN'T and this is why I love writing
