Against the shoreline of Tarkwa Bay and the waters surrounding Lagos, photographer and filmmaker Daniel Obasi follows the young Nigerian surfers whose lives have become entwined with the ocean for Water, Get Enemy?. Through a series of intimate interviews and reflections, the short film explores surfing as more than just a sport, presenting a means of survival, self-expression, and freedom from the vibrant capital’s southernmost point.

– Daniel Obasi

Connecting with the city’s surfers through their experiences growing up around the water, Nigerian-born Obasi reveals a tight group united by years of friendship, collective struggles, and a passion for the sea. Surfing together since childhood, the community functions like a family, building shared stories that began on the beach and in the water, and friendships that extend beyond surfing itself.

Capturing the Atlantic ocean as a place of healing, identity, and community, Water, Get Enemy? observes a rarely seen side of Lagos, where young Nigerians carve out spaces of joy and discovery along the coastline, as the surfers of Tarkwa Bay find belonging, liberation and self-expression riding the waves.
