Many of the most popular GPL'd (and commerical) game engines can be compiled on Linux such as all of the Quake / Doom engines made by ID. This has lead to a strong influx of high-quality GPL'd game titles being released on this platform. Linux is also run behind the scenes on many of the popular consoles such as the Playstation 2 and Dreamcast which has resulted in underground game development scenes attempting to run their creations on these platforms by bypassing the standard bootup sequences. Though this practice is generally not supported by the hardware creator and considered illegal.
