A silver-lead mine, approx 20 km east of Lyndhurst.
The Avondale Mine opened sometime during 1890, and was run for a short time (presumably at a profit) and has seen several periods of mining since, with the last recorded listing being 1952.
Essentially the mine consists of 4 known veins of galena, all of which were originally visible on the surface. Records suggest the galena may have been no more than 100 feet in depth, although workings have been recorded to a depth of 140 feet in one shaft. At least one lode ran for a distance of 440+ feet.
SARIG Mineral Deposit Information:
"Several well defined, cross cutting, parallel lodes of galena in host slate and thin dolomite beds of the Myrtle Springs Formation. Lodes vary from a few cm to >60cm wide, and trend NS."
