Ureilite (S1), 2010 Find
Numerous Stones 2.291 kg (total), largest 654 g
Over 100 small moderately weathered stones and fragments were found within a few meters of each other. Various pieces show an uneven distribution of olivine and pigeonite in mostly moderately fine-grained regions with sporadic coarser-grained regimes with crystals up to ~ 1cm. The finer-grained regions are replete with 120° triple junction; in coarser-grained regions homogeneous olivines are poikilitically enclosed in larger pigeonite grains. Graphite, other pyroxenes, and quite minor amounts of metal are found between or around the larger grains. Reduction at olivine rims is also observed. The fusion crust is lacking and terrestrial (iron) oxides are present. For an ureilite, Catalina 037 shows a rather low shock level (S1).
Catalina 037 is a moderately large ureilite with potential scientific importance (17th most massive of 365 listed stones). However, at the present time information outside of proprietary channels is virtually non-existent. [Meteorite Bulletin #102 only source utilized here.]
