Studying Computer Science at University - Worth It?
 |
Finland happycrankk
I am currently a 2nd year Business student, but I am finding my current studies too boring / ez. I've been thinking about changing my major to Computer Science. I am, however, somewhat worried about AI possibly taking all the jobs in IT. Do you think it's still worth it getting a CS degree today ?

what are your interests and strengths? cs degree requires a lot of more advanced math. if you are fine with that then it's still a good option i would say but ofc need to be careful when choosing specialisation. i heard cybersecurity for example has not been that affected by ai currently but not sure

currently not that much, however newer models behind closed doors have proven incredibly good at breaking through the current state of the art cybersecurity defenses, so who knows what the technology will look like two years from now

don't full yourself, people don't randomly jump into stem on second year. if by this age your are not doing anything extensive in IT yourself, you will not be successful

By CS if you are talking about high-level programmers who does CRUD apps yes they are most likely cooked btw the CS market is very tight right now, people simply don't care about graduates anymore. You will have to wait 2-3 years to have a high chance of securing a job as a junior programmer. Or you can work at the government like me without having to worry about AI. You can also dive deep into low-level concepts like embedded programming, robotics, etc. But it will be hard.

If you like it, go ahead. Tech bros complain about the market and all that every single time, but in every career you choose, you'll find uncertainty and problems. It's definitely not like it was pre-COVID-19, but if you like it and you're willing to study hard as fuck until you die, that's the deal.

depends on how good at stem you are, maths is important in any stem degree

You should be way more worried about outsourcing and your gov handing these jobs to cheap foreign imports.

it's not worth it in 2026 men, trust, you'll regret it unless you are really REALLY interested in it

honestly, it's worth pursuing academic research in CS, so look for a PhD or so. AI labs today are paying astronomical money to whoever is at this level, and will continue to do so for a long time. However be prepared: the mathematics is hard as hell. Several people leave the course at the graduation level due to the inherent pressure. Then, imagine how it is at the PhD level. It's definitely not for everyone. Personally, I love CS and all the mathematics that goes with it. If I had a chance to go back in time, I would do it all over again. 100% recommend if you're a nerd like me
