So introductions: those seem to be a thing people do.

I'm WolffyLuna, and I generally go by Wolffy as a short form. I'm [tumblr.com profile] wolffyluna on tumblr and [archiveofourown.org profile] wolffyluna on Ao3. Feel free to ask for my discord number. I am an Australian geologist with too many hobbies.

I'm in... a lot of fandoms. And apart from a few mainstays, which ones I'm in tends to change rapidly. So listing them may not be helpful, while listing how I tend to participate in fandom may be more helpful. I'm a fan artist and ficcer, and appreciator of the same. I like over-analysing things, especially things you can really sink your analytical teeth into, like Revolutionary Girl Utena. I also make and paint miniatures (like the lovely skele-horse in my icon!) Fibre arts is eating my life a little.  Fandom exchanges are so good, I love participating in them. I'm a femslash fan, though I quite like m/m, f/m and gen as well.

I will put potentially nsfw or content-warning-worthy things under cuts, with descriptions. With nsfw content, I tend to use the 'Little Timmy Test' aka if a thirteen year old with very strict* parents would get in trouble if the parent saw it on their screen, it gets put under a cut.

I am firmly on Team 'Making <3 comments as a kludgy way to like dreamwidth posts'.

* uhh, very non-homophobic, very strict parents. *shrugs* it's not a perfect rule.

Though now I am faced with a dilemma. So, I have been recently using the Gideon method with my writing (short version is: have a short list of projects, work on them in order for 12 hours each, have a one in one out policy for projects) and I have learned something important:

The Gideon Method really does not work with the way I write

So now it has been months since I have worked on my novel and I have lost momentum, and I also need to work out what the heck I am doing.

...one of the things I am doing is going back to the 'work on two projects at once, on alternate days'. I just need to work out what projects and in what order.

Desiderata:

  • being in a drawer for longer isn't likely to hurt my original projects any more than they have already been hurt... but I don't want them in a drawer forever
  • But for [reasons], I don't think I want to be alternating between two different original projects. I want to be alternating an original project with something else.
  • ArtFight is coming up! I want to do artfight this year! Which will also mean I need to make references for ArtFight
  • I want to get rid of the projects that have deadlines as soon as I can. These projects are 'make podfics for people who won podfic auctions in fandom trumps hate' and 'why did I bid on sensitivity reading for blind characters when I had no projects with blind characters'
  • I do want to work on the Finwe/Orome fic and the 'Siffrin accidentally stabs himself' fic sooner rather than later.

Current tentative plan is to start alternating Artfight with the fandom trumps hate podfics, and the go from there.

I do have a couple ideas for shortish original fiction featuring blind characters, at least? I'm just running to 'okay, so you have an external plot but I'm confused about your internal plot, and you have a really good internal plot but I have less of an idea of how to make it external.' (with a side of 'do I want to give details on dreamwidth, or would that be showing too much of how the sausage gets made?' :P)

I have recently acquired an electric bike. I went back and forth on whether to get one (due to the expense, risk of getting stolen, etc) but I finally decided to. I am for various reasons deliberately not buying a car, and I live somewhere hilly enough that having a bit of help from a motor makes a bike more practical.

I have only had it for a few days and they have been... an exciting few days. I am developing a love-hate relationship for this heavy thing that goes NYOOM. But at the moment it is mostly love, just. If it was a boyfriend and not a bike, people should be worried, but it's an inanimate object, so it's probably fine. ("Yes, he hurts me, but he can change!!!")

But yesterday-- it was pouring rain, but I decided that shouldn't stop me from taking it for a spin. I also managed to have a literal fender bender* that day, which was the day after I bought the thing. I had to try and repair a bike while in the rain by getting instructions from a discord friend. Also, because I wear glasses, I could only sort of see where I was going. But I have RARELY FELT SO ALIVE. I LOVE MY BIKE.

But any way. I'm having fun, and I am appreciating being able to get places faster, and once I get more confidence, I can go even fasterer.

...if I end up as mincemeat on the road at some point, not that I died doing one of the things I loved.

/* My bike, me, and a bike rack got into a disagreement that ended up with me falling one way, the bike falling the other, and bending the wires that held the front fender in place. It was fixable, thankfully, by being the wires back.

Can I just say that listening to the Silmarillion as an audiobook while next to industrial machinery is an experience?

“And Melkor sang a discord and [WHIRRRRRCRASHHYDRAULICNOISES]”

Silmarillion audiobook reread bupdate: [hiding under a table as LOTR cosplayers form a conga line] i think I’m in too deep.

  1. I missed getting to write fic featuring aggressive Australiana. But I feel that if I had to look Tolkien dead in the eye and say “if you describe as place as wonderful and bountiful and with all the plants and animals ever, I am picturing a place with great white trees leading you to water, with magpies and corellas singing in then, and the ground littered with purple hibiscus” I feel like he’d at least tip his hat.

  2. I will not get into discourse. But I will say that 2018!Wolffy was wrong and they should come meet me in the honourable duelling grounds.

  3. I keep having to pause my Silm listening to wiggle about ~the character~

I was going on my nightly jog, and I found myself doing full on anime style sprinting because I was thinking about the character too hard.

… which is why I’m being vague about who it is, but like. I’m about one third through and you know my tastes, you can guess.

I've cracked. The propaganda has worked.

I have put in a library hold request for the first volume of Witch Hat Atelier.

I'm trying out the Gideon Method with both my writing and craft projects. The short version is: you have five 'slots' for works in progress. You work for about 12 hours on one project, and then you got to the next project in the queue for about 12 hours, rinse and repeat. Once a project is done, it's slot is opened and you can add a new project to the rotation.

I'm not sure how well it will work with writing compared to crafts? With writing you're much more likely to go "wait, what was I doing with this one again?" But it seems worth an experiment.

Behold, my current Gideon queue:

A table of projects with room to track time next to them. The writing projects are 'Emperor/Favourite', the current project 'Fandom Trumps Hate', 'Prompt fic,' 'Death Game Streamers/Thread of Duty', and 'Sapphic Steppe Atrocities.' (← the fact I am going ‘nyaaargh!’ about it being on the list is either a sign it should be on the list, or sign it should be very not on the list until Emperor/Favourite needs to go into a drawer). The next writing project to be added is 'Orc/Drow'. The craft projects are 'Noro cowl,' 'charity cotton,' 'charity wool,' 'christmas beanies,' 'first jumper' and the next in the queue 'the doomed watermelon crop top.'

I'm not dead!

Things have been... busy. My life is at least less on fire than last time I updated (though I did have a day that featured both [REDACTED FOR GROSS] and me managing to glue wood to my phone screen. So.)

But mostly I have been busy doing Minecraft Youtube Battleship! I had a lot of fun and may have made. Too many things. Like, an amount of things that may have a visible affect on my ao3 statistic 0.0.

I'm also preparing with my mother to go to a local music and arts event and busk Wuji. Despite my mother being a literal professional musician, it looks like, terrifyingly, I'm going to be the one playing the melody. I will walk the single plank bridge into the night sounding like we know what we are doing.

And after that I am planning to be Well Behaved and sort out the Pile of Original Writing that I'm underneath. Maybe even sort out getting a short story into a paying market.

wolffyluna: A green unicorn holding her tail in her mouth (Default)

I have had. A week. Or, well. Ten days.

Now, a bunch of what happened in that ten day span was supremely frustrating, but also, supremely doxxing. Needless to say, it ended up with me working 24 days instead of 21 in a row, and also my suitcase being. stuck at my workplace.

But I have, also, had something not doxxing happen, and it's funny because it's a very "how the hell did you DO THAT?" injury. You see, I injured myself with that most dangerous of crafts: spinning yarn.

injury details )

Anyway, I have also had good things happen. I have discovered sweet potato slump. (Excuse the shorts link, the recipe is in the description box.) A slump is a type of dessert that is like a crumble in that it has a layer of fruit, and then a layer of something on top, but in a slump's case, the layer on top is cakey.

I knew that sweet potato in desserts was a thing. But with this recipe, I have been converted. Sweet potato cooked in spiced syrup is so so good, it's soft and warm and sweet but still has that complexity of sweet potato without the spices or sugar overpowering it. And by baking it still with it's syrup, you make this spiced sauce that goes so well with the cakey layer on top. And it's so simple too! It's a solid 'it's saturday, I want dessert, but I don't want to spend all day making dessert' dish.

(WickdConfections has a whole series of historical African American dessert recipes that this slump is a part of. I haven't tried any of her other recipes, but I definitely am going to try some of the other simple ones, because goodness is this a good recipe.)

Starting this January, I have been playing G. Ray's SpeciesQuest. It is a asynchronous online competition to go out and See Species. People pick a reasonable taxonomic group, and try to see the largest percentage of species in that taxa in that area (local%), or they they try and find the largest number of species in that taxa everywhere (Total Species.)

I have decided to go for Total Species in both Bird and Butterflies.

I have had, let's say, extemely limited success with the butterflies. But the birds? Oh boy, the birds. I fear I have caught the bug. I'll be a full on twitcher by the end of the year if I don't stop myself.

Though I can't regret it, because it seems to be doing good things with my brain. I'm much more attune to movement now, and I keep getting little jolts of "!" every time I see a bird, even if it's one I have seen many times before. (It at the least, makes up for all the moments of "drat!" when I am too slow or unable to photograph a new one :P. Petition for new birds to stop showing up at work or when I am driving.) I think that little regular moment of 'yay, a galah!' is good for me.

But the more dramatic to me personally is how it's changed the way I interact with the soundscape. I'm learning new bird calls, but I'm also learning ones that it turns out I already subconsciously knew but weren't paying attention to. And like that little bit of dopamine at seeing a common bird in flight, it's nice to step outside and immediately go "oh, that's a magpie lark call. Yay, I like magpie larks!"

Anyway. Next time I'm off work, I'm going to the Big Bookstore to buy a field guide, and I'm hoping they have one that covers both the region I live and the region I work. (I have been using Merlin, which is very helpful... but it also keeps going "We only know ~30% of the birds in your area :(" )

I have recently got very into Vampires SMP. It is a linked series of Minecraft Let's Plays of several players all playing a modded version of minecraft. (The 'SMP' in the name stands for 'survival multiplayer' which translates to 'on a multiplayer server where you can die and have to gather resources.) The modifications: vampires exist and have access to powers that the 'human' players do not have, including the ability to turn humans, and there is a capture the flag like mechanic about claiming beacons for the vampire or human teams.

But what makes this most interesting are that all of the players are roleplaying, and that the game very quickly becomes a social deception and deduction game-- one made even More So, because at the beginning, most of the characters do not believe vampires are real.

Now, roleplay combining with social deduction is fun enough, but there is another reason that Vampires SMP has got it's claws into me so much: the way point of view works. Because each player creates and edits their own videos, and these videos are all in first person. If the player did not see it, the camera and the viewers don't know about it. (Only adding to this is the fact that players will often edit conversations they have, so two videos of the same conversation can be slightly different.) This leads to people doing soliloquies to their audience. To people having conversations where from one point of view you know they are a vampire, and from the other you have no idea that they are lying. It leads to, in one case, someone giving a dramatic speech thinking it worked because the other characters only went "so, they were lying, right?" after they left.

But even better, is the way that, at least for me, you end up seeing things through that character's eyes and ~agreeing with them? Which makes it interesting to then watch those same scenes from other people's perspectives. Is this person reckless and jumping the gun, or full of reasonable paranoia and intense emotion. Is this person in a revolving door of loyalty, or do they keep getting driven away from people.

It's fun!

Hello, person who is assigned to me or considering making a treat! No matter what you make, I'm probably going to really like it, but I know it's much easier to come up with an idea if you've got some guidance.

Length of prompts is not related to how much I like any character or group, and more related to how much I can ramble about them off the top of my head. Also, feel free to do whatever you want. If for example, I mention wanting fluff for a character, but you have an angsty idea you really want to do, go for it!

My ao3 account and my tumblr are both wolffyluna, if you want to have a look at them to get ideas.

Notes for Pinch Hitters

Heaven Will Be Mine is a visual novel that takes about 6 hours to play through all the routes.

Sha Po Lang is a novel, that in print takes up five volumes, to give a sense of the size of it.

Vampires SMP is a multi creator youtube series, and you would only need to see one creator’s POV to have enough information to write fic. Each series is around eight episodes of 40-120 minutes long.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a computer rpg that takes about 80 hours to play.

Everyone should praise me for my FIVE FIGURE DONATION to the Against Malaria Foundation, even though it was VERY SCARY.

The sensible context is that I had miscalculated my charity budget and made it too low, and I decided to 'pay back the shortfall.'

The slightly less sensible context is that I read a lot of Medieval history in 2025. And something that came up, both in majority Christian cultures and majority Muslim cultures, was that the standard response to any good news was 'give a donation to charity.' A baby was born? Charity donation. Found a commentary on Aristotle that finally explained it properly? Charity donation.

Apart from the, uh, exciting bits at the end, I have had a pretty good 2025. And I wanted to properly honour that. And you know what? I think the various Medieval people are right, a good response to good things happening to you is to give to charity.

... Also, assuming I have done my back of the envelope maths right, I have now gone over to a whole Negative Moist Von Lipwig.

wolffyluna: A green unicorn holding her tail in her mouth (Default)

Thread of Duty: (aka the Cavalry General and Embroidery Mage arranged marriage romance.) Finished, except for cover, formatting, and acknowledgements. I mean, I could edit it again? But also, I can move forward. ...even if that would require working out what to do with it. (Insert combined rant about both Amazon and itch.io.)

Survival Showdown: (aka VR streamers in not-a-death-game.) I thiiiiiink it's had it's second draft? But I'd need to check. So the first step is 'reconstruct where I was up to with it, and go forward from there.' Also, then work out what I'm going to do with it. (See above rant.)

Sapphic Steppe Atrocities: (which needs a more descriptive name.) I have got an editorial letter back, and need to go do some chunky edits to the thing. The next step is to go and do research on the Central Asian Steppe (short chain of logic gets me here) and research on [deep sigh] early modern Japan and World War 1, even though I don't want to do either (a longer chain of logic gets me here.)

Emperor/Favourite: partway through outlining.

Hi. How are your days going? Yesterday, I experienced an hour long surprise hike feat. 31C and humidity + having to psychologically manipulate some cows.

*So. Picture this. Before work, we realise that two of us need to to Mining Town in the morning, while two of us need to go into the office (which is in the middle of a cattle station). But we only have one work car.

... one of my coworkers does have a personal car, which he is willing to let us borrow.

So. The coworker who owns the personal car + another guy drive into town... with the work car. Me and my other coworker take the personal car. It's an old rattley thing with no clearance, but it is technically a four wheel drive, so it should be fine on the dirt station tracks? Right?

We turn off the highway, and start driving down the tracks. Within 5 minutes, we mysteriously lose power steering. A minute later, the check engine light comes on. During that minute as we try and work out what was going on, my coworker goes "FUCK LOOK AT THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE GAUGE." We stop and get out.

Belt? On the ground. A worrying mix of radiator fluid and oil? Also on the ground. Bonnet? Gently smoking.

We are currently in the middle of a dirt track, in the middle of nowhere. The weather can best be described as "the inside of Satan's swampy butt cheeks." It's going to take a couple hours for our coworkers to get to Mining Town and back. We have no phone reception. We have limited water and no air condititioning.

But we have some water, and our office has A/C and a phone, and it is, technically, walking distance.

So we spend an hour wading 7km through the more humid parts of the Devil.

But we are on a cattle station. There are cows. Now, these cows are appropriately afraid of cars: they'll get out of the way but they won't panic. They are inappropriately afraid of people on foot: we are talking full on galloping away from us PANIC, the earth shaking under their hooves.

Now. Flight is fine. We're going to have a problem if any of them choose fight.

My goal: get the cows to run away from us while we were still as far from them as possible... without freaking them out so much some decided to run in the wrong direction. With their horns down.

Now, I don't know much about cows, but I do know about horses. And horses and cows are basically the same [citation needed.] How would I manipulate a horse to get them to run far, far away?

I stood up very, very straight. I picked a cow in the herd to stare at dead in the eyes. And I thought thoughts like "mmmm, steak tartare," and "you know, it's always been a dream of mine to rip a still beating heart out of a rib cage as I watch the life leave my victim's eyes, but I've just never had a chance to."

Which worked way better than it should have? So we reached the office, without dying of a heat stroke, cow, or coworker avenging his car.

wolffyluna: A green unicorn holding her tail in her mouth (Default)

So, this past few weeks has been cursed, both work wise (fire, nearly falling off a cliff, CLOSER FIRE, vehicle breakdown) and in the world generally (eg the antisemitic terror attack in Australia. Which. I don't really have words for other than 'tragic' and 'I really wish it hadn't happened.').

But! Today I shall see family, and the Northern Hemisphere can take some of their daylight back, and hopefully things will improve.

wolffyluna: A green unicorn holding her tail in her mouth (Default)

Before I forget: If I am incommunicado, or something odd happens to my account on December 10th, do not worry! I will be alive (...inshallah?), just potentially fighting Australia's incoming under-16 social media ban.
