Hi all. My name is Jenn. I'm a Delaware native training in Traditional Wing Chun and a member of the TWCKF Association under Grandmaster William Cheung. I am currently a dark blue sash, level 4, working my way up. I came to Wing Chun through my fiance who is a black sash in the same style and looking to earn his black belt in Urban Defense Tactics, a style taught by our Sifu. I've only been studying for about a year and a half. Before that I was a long distance competative runner so I have no other background in Martial Arts. I love Wing Chun and have a blast with it. Just wanted to say hi and get to know others. :-)
Hello all,
Has anyone experienced or knew of Wing Chun training in full contact events? If so what is your opinion on it and any such advice you might have? How did would you (or have you/others) worked your Wing Chun to the event?
Beyond the obvious lack of finger jabs to the eyes and attacks to the throat, I feel that something Wing Chun can use in almost any type of full contact sporting would be the close-range sticking and manipulation of arms/balance. I've had great success with this facet most of all when I would open spar others at various degrees of intensity. That is the one thing I have not see other styles utilize, thus my partners always note and respect this ability after they witness and/or experience it.
I have a Sanshou Leitai event coming up in May. Beyond conditioning and getting "fighting fit", anyone have any words to share?
Okay, so here's a question for ya'll. Well, in a second, I guess some background is needed, first.
So, I studied Karate when I was in jr high and such. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but when I moved out on my own years later, I ended up studying Choy Li Fut. I found that the style really clicked with me and I enjoyed it immensely. Unfortunately, I was only able to study for a few months before I had to move out of the area.
Cut to about ten years later and I decided to look into again. I took a free lesson at a school near me that taught Choy Li Fut and found that I was still really into it. I couldn't afford the lessons, though, so I didn't start studying it again. Now, I've moved again to an entirely different city and the Choy Li Fut schools here are...inconvenient to get to.
However, there is a Wing Chun school near me that looks interesting.
So! My question is, given my interest in Choy Li Fut, how similar would I find it to study Wing Chun?
Any advice or insights would be appreciated. :)
What "gongs" are you doing in "Bo Fa" training?
Does anyone here have experience fighting vs. ground fighting styles with Wing Chun? It's kind of hard to evaluate the effectiveness of a form that you're not supposed to use in sport.
I have just applied for a job and it looks like I may get it. I am being trained up as a karate instructor spanning two years of traning for a large karate company. The job centre has informed me that I must the job or they could stop my money.
I am a kung fu student and I would love to be able to teach it in the near future but taking this job doing karate I may lose sight of my kung fu goals and my kung fu training will be lost.
Another thing is that I am a nihilist and I don`t agree with the martial arts dogma that this company uses. I need money and I have to take this job but I`m torn.
Any advice would be welcomed.
Thanks.
It`s no surprise that martial arts training is expensive. On my income I seem to be having a hard time and it is doing my head in cos I would like to be able to train every other day if possible. Sadly, commitments, work, time, energy all come into play. And even though you have the motivation, the costs and time just isn`t there. It is frustrating cos you want to be good at martial arts and well it seems that you`re let down at times either by your own financial situation...or blame the system and the working week. I`m starting to think that actually martial art isn`t a way of life anymore as I find myself doing less and other people, government demanding more of the same. Is it just me?

Hi guys. Just joined here my first community. Wing Chun is great - I love it! I`ve been doing it [Wing Chun Kuen] for about a year and a half here in the Uk. Are you all American here?
I`ve got my grading soon - my instructor says I can do it and I think I can but I just find can`t help thinking they are unimportant. So much of life is proving yourself, posturing and overcoming things. Lol. I guess I`ve gotta do it, man! As Bruce Lee would say.
