Chicken Intelligence

edit

Hello, I recently discovered that chickens are actually more intelligent than once thought, with reports of them using sticks as tools or hijacking scientific tests. I will be on the look out for more reliable sources, but until then, can you all be on the lookout for anything on this topic? Thank you. Theinfinitenobody (talk) 23:18, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Here's two searches & an article to peruse:

Shame nothing has been added to the article., , . Doug Weller talk 19:10, 28 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Doug Weller - feel free. Your [1] looks usable; I doubt if the other two are. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:15, 28 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. But it’s not pseudo archaeology and I’m using the limited time I have left for that. I am watching Australian survivor and it has a very very friendly chickenin it, and was idling using my iPad to find out more. Doug Weller talk 19:19, 28 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not sure I understand that. I have added a brief factual statement, citing [1]. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:24, 28 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I thought you were asking me to work on it. Doug Weller talk 08:01, 29 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Chicken Breeds and Other Details

edit

I've personally bred and raised chickens for 8 years and have significant knowledge and experience with them (many different breeds). Some of the information in this article is inaccurate and there is a lot of information missing. I would like to add to it regarding various breeds (that are combless, have feathered legs, etc.) Also, details such as the fact that hens do not "cluck" (the proper terminology is "sing") after they lay an egg, but before, should be corrected. There are hundreds, if not thousands of breeds of chickens, so it's impossible to cover all of them in a single article, but I would like to touch on some popular varieties and their key differences. There's also a comment from 2024 mentioning chicken intelligence that I'd like to address. Chickens can be very intelligent and can even be trained (an animal trainer named Terry Ryan holds workshops all over the world to teach people how to train chickens). If my personal experience isn't a conflict of interest, I'd love to contribute on this topic. WritingisLife25 (talk) 16:19, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. You are right to be concerned about the use of personal knowledge. Wikipedia works entirely from reliable written sources which can be verified by other editors. Obviously, personal knowledge, however many years it is based on, cannot be verified in this way, and cannot be used directly on Wikipedia. You are also right that articles have to be brief, and when they cover large subjects like this one, they can only give a very high-level overview of the main points. There are already numerous subsidiary articles, such as on individual breeds, and there is certainly scope for more reliably-cited information on many such sub-topics. You can navigate to many of the subsidiary articles via the navigation bars at the bottom of the article. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:28, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

ZW sex-determination

edit

I noticed that there was no mention of this unique form of sex-determination and thought that it would be appropriate to at least include a brief description and a link to the ZW sex-determination article. But I am not sure if this is a notable mention worthy of this article. Could someone please confirm this? The Unapologetic Spagetii (talk) 00:14, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

ZW is common to all birds and to some other organisms, so it's not unique to this species. Chiswick Chap (talk) 06:29, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification! The Unapologetic Spagetii (talk) 13:28, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
