tl;dr--do YOU have this book, or know someone who does? It's called Tiny Penguin's Flying Lesson.

I have posted this on different parts of the internet several times now, and I can't believe it's never occurred to me to post here until now...

This book has been my white whale. I have been looking for it for years.

My spouse had a copy and the included small plush penguin as a small child. When we first started dating, they told me about how, as a toddler, he accidentally dropped the plush off a boat and into the ocean and was devastated. I thought it would be a cute sentimental gift to purchase a used copy for them, because in the book, “the penguin always comes back.” However, it turns out that this book is not only out of print; it’s incredibly rare. I can’t seem to find it on sale anywhere online, I've checked countless real-life vintage and antique stores, and it’s only available in like three libraries in the world--one of which is the Bodleian Library and another is the British Library, which are both required to have every book published in the United Kingdom--according to Worldcat. I couldn’t even get it on interlibrary loan because of how rare it supposedly is.

I do not know how my spouse, who grew up in semi-rual Pennsylvania, had a copy of this book as a child. But he did. And I have been on the hunt for ages.

Can anyone in the tumblr hivemind help me find it? Do you have a copy you would be willing to sell me? Do you know where I might acquire one?

Just a little more info on this:

It was part of the Tiny Hugs series published by Readers Digest in the 90s. (I think this particular book came out in 1997). The authors were Muff Singer and Risa Sherwood Gordon.

Another mystery on this:

Why is it in two of the UK legal deposit libraries, but not in the U.S. Library of Congress--the U.S.'s legal deposit library--when the book was, afaik, publihsed in the U.S.?

The only library in North America that has a copy appears to be the one at Skidmore College, a small liberal arts college in Upstate New York. Why there???

OK

final one

for all the marbles,

this one doesn't have an illustration bc i think it was just a kids novel but i haven't been able to find ANYTHING about it on my occasional internet queries:

kids is staying with his (grandmother?) in the woods and she warns him not to look a fox in the eyes bc they're tricksy and will swap places with you. obviously that's the first thing the little boy does and gets body snatched by a fox who uhhhh proceeds to pig out with his new little boy human hands and the boy has to trick the fox into looking him in the eyes again to switch back...

thats all i got, it's an older book i wanna say from the 60's?? 70's?? kinda the same jist of "Little Rascal"

cryptid-of-ohio

The first one looks like The Spider and the Fly, though the poses are a bit different.

image

The second one is likely Stellaluna.

image

I’m not sure about the third one, I will keep searching.

cryptid-of-ohio

I think I found the third one, though I’m the least confident about this one. Is it Creature Tech?

image

Unfortunately it doesn’t have a praying mantis on the cover :(

You might be frustrated by the library never having a complete manga collection on its shelves at any given time, but the 12 year old checking out 14 volumes of One Piece at once is vital to the library ecosystem. He's like the sea otter keeping the kelp forest from being devastated by an excess of sea urchins.

To those curious some other keystone library species include:

—the retirees who’ve read more murder mysteries than I’ve had hot meals

—the paperback romance girlies (gender neutral) who check out every single bodice ripper the second it hits the shelves

—the dads very slowly making their way through a ‘1001 movies to see before you die’ list

—the one-man criterion collection who checks out like, three movies per day and brings them back the next. (TV series are only a minor roadblock.)

—kids who like Minecraft

---The new parents checking out 47 picture books for their 7 month old baby who clearly has nothing going on in their head except the Wii Sports Resort theme song

ok so this is another long shot but a few years ago there was a twitter post (in japanese i think?) that had measurememts for how to make this book stand thing out of cardboard that you could use to double up books and use up more space on shelves

image
image

back then i made a bunch of these but by now i lost the pic and dont know how to find the original post anymore

if it comes down to it i can just take one apart and get the measurements from there but i would be very grateful if anyone happens to have the original post or something similar??

megacarapa

don't mind how long it's been since i made this post, anyway i realized that i don't even need to take one apart to get the measurements when i can literally just unfold it and refold it /FACEPALM

so anyway here is the diagram for anyone else who is interested!!

image
image
image

this requires pretty big carboard pieces, if you have a really big box or something you can make it from one piece, but if you don't, you can also just make each of the pieces individually and then tape them together

image
image

and then in the end you put it together like this!!

image

and then when you make a bunch you can put them all next to each other and stack your books like crazy

image

EVERYONE START GETTING MORE USE OUT OF YOUR SPACE NOW!!!!
