Issy Perkin reposted thisGreat blog post detailing how Gemini leveraged Amazon Web Services (AWS)'s NY Local Zone to offer a proximity trading environment to customers with <2ms roundtrip latency. In the blog, Joshua M. Smith and team detail the technical architecture behind the deployment and the benefits customers see with this latency optimized connectivity. Gemini will also be presenting at AWS's New York Financial Services Symposium this week on this topic and how they are using AWS Outposts to host their matching engine in NY5. Link to register below. Gemini Proximity Trading Blog: https://lnkd.in/emrDTbZ9 AWS Financial Services Symposium: https://lnkd.in/eM-DqzKTIssy Perkin reposted thisIn this new blog post, Yucong Sun, Austin Little, and I dive into how Gemini built a high-performance, cloud-native trading API using AWS Local Zones. We illustrate how Gemini was able to dramatically reduce latency for their trading clients in the cloud and improve operations, with results including: ⚡ Lower Latency: AWS Local Zone NYC-2A cut cloud-based round-trip time from 8–12ms down to ~2ms — a 4–5x improvement that brings cloud connectivity within striking distance of physical colocation. 🔗 Seamless Connectivity: Through VPC Peering, trading firms can connect to Gemini's matching engine with sub-2ms RTT, provisioned in minutes rather than the months required for physical cross-connects. 📈 Cloud-Native Scalability: Gemini leverages Amazon EKS, HAProxy, and Amazon Route 53 for dynamic service discovery and load balancing, enabling elastic scaling without sacrificing performance. We also discuss operational overhead, security, and scalable engineering practices. Dario Amodei and Jamie Dimon took the stage together, in front of 500+ leaders from JPMorganChase, Goldman Sachs, Citi, and many more. A genuine, high-level reckoning with what AI means for markets, the workforce, and the global economy. Worth every minute. At Indicium AI, we work with many of the world's leading Financial Services firms - so it's fair to say we're in good company. The big announcements from Anthropic: → 10 pre-built AI agents for banking, asset management & insurance - capable of building pitchbooks, auditing statements, and drafting credit memos with minimal human intervention → A $1.5B JV with Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, and Hellman & Friedman → Moody's Corporation's data on 600M+ companies now flowing directly into Claude The shift is real. AI in financial services is no longer about chat tools or pilots. It's about infrastructure - autonomous workflows with audit trails and governance built in. The question every FS leader should be asking isn't 'should we explore AI?... it's 'how fast can we move from pilot to production?' Issy Perkin liked thisIssy Perkin liked thisEarly in my AWS career I had the privilege of working on a side project with some colleagues on how we could think differently about automating some of the internal tasks we did on a day-to-day basis. That side project turned into our own little ‘start-up’ within Amazon, leading to the formation of an awesome team that showed me how much I love varied work, operating in global diverse teams and working with people who are much, much smarter than me. In 2023, while we transitioned that project on to a different function internally, I stumbled across the MSt at University of Cambridge, and I thought: where better to find a new diverse group of people, passionate about building cool things, and who will almost certainly be significantly more intelligent than me (spoiler alert: they were…x100). So this past weekend I was really proud to graduate. The feeling I had on Saturday (and have had for a while) is one of gratitude. Growing up, my parents continuously encouraged us to be relentless in the pursuit of knowledge and to never stop learning. I will always be grateful for my managers at AWS who echoed that and didn’t even bat an eye when I asked to do this Masters in addition to my day job, and my team members, friends and peers in the program who supported me since that day. So thank you to all of those folks over the years, Mike & Sabs pictured here, and to Becca Stark and Amanda Sleight for saying yes to this adventure back then.

Issy Perkin liked thisIssy Perkin liked thisAnd just like that, my nearly 14 years at Softcat comes to an end. Softcat has been home during the most formative years of my career, and I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of something so special. I joined in 2012 as a 21-year-old graduate (first picture), moving from Bournemouth to High Wycombe to start a sales role in the Marlow head office. Back then, Softcat was around 350 people, with three offices and hardly anyone I knew had even heard of it. But it didn’t take long to fall in love with the place, the people, the culture, and the shared ambition to one day become the best in the industry. From day one, I was surrounded by brilliant people and a culture that genuinely set the standard. A few years in, Adam Fraser gave me the opportunity to move to what was then a small London office and my connection to the business grew even stronger. Fast forward seven years, and I was entrusted by the all-knowing Daniel Robinson to take over leading that same office. Together, we built it into the largest sales team in the company, while staying true to the culture that made it special in the first place. We smashed targets, set records, and had a LOT of fun along the way. I'm leaving it in an incredibly strong position, and I know it will continue to thrive under John Gatrell and Harry Moran. It’s a real luxury to have genuinely enjoyed who I worked with and a privilege to have respected every person I worked for. Not everyone gets to say that. There are far too many people to thank for the part they’ve played in this journey, but a few deserve a special mention. Ty Gooden — for supporting me day in, day out over the last few years. Sarah Thomas — for being a constant friend through it all. Graeme Watt — for encouraging me to take the leap in the first place. Daniel Robinson— for being the mentor and coach everyone should be lucky enough to have. And to the whole London office — for believing in me, backing me, and showing up for each other in the way that makes that place so special. There’s a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that’s always stuck with me: “To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded.” I’ll never truly know the impact I’ve had, but if I’ve made even one person’s experience better, then I’ve achieved everything I could have hoped for at Softcat. There will never be enough words to express how grateful I am for the experience, the opportunities, the lessons, and most importantly the people. The only way I can repay that is by carrying those standards forward and applying everything I’ve learned in what comes next. So with that in mind… watch this space!

Issy Perkin liked thisIssy Perkin liked thisAfter more than 8 years, I’ve decided to close my chapter at Amazon. Opportunities tend to show up when you’re not looking for them and, occasionally, one comes along that’s hard to ignore. The kind of moment that tells you it’s time. Amazon has been a defining part of my career. I joined early on and ended up staying far longer than I ever expected. Long enough to grow into roles and responsibilities I couldn’t have imagined back then. From Amazon Web Services (AWS) to Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios and MGM+, I’ve had the chance to work across very different parts of the business and geographies, each shaping how I think today. What I’ll take with me is a way of operating that I suspect will stay with me forever: clarity in writing, a high bar for data and judgement, and a genuine sense of ownership - being ready to step in, speak up, and deliver at any level when it matters. More than anything, it’s the people. I’ve been lucky to work with some exceptional individuals. Colleagues who became close friends and mentors along the way. Too many to name, but you know who you are! I’ll miss that, and I’ll miss the Amazon way. May will be my last month, and I’ll be taking some time to recharge before what comes next. Looking forward to sharing more soon. Stay tuned!

AWS announced a price increase early this year, and Alibaba followed suit last week. Currently, these changes are impacting high-end systems, but the pressure to raise prices due to both AI initiatives and CPU shortages is already extending downward. For those working in companies that leverage cloud-based solutions, services, and tools, how are you planning your purchases and contract renewals in light of these price increases? Vendors, how are you guiding your customers regarding your own potential cloud cost increases? For more details, check out the article here: https://lnkd.in/gpz3KJGG. #cloudcost #AI #CPU

Modern applications need access to real-time, consistent data, but enterprise data is often stuck in silos across legacy systems. That’s where an Operational Data Layer (ODL) can help. It creates a central, organised data layer between backend systems and front-end applications, supporting initiatives like Data as a Service, single view use cases, and mainframe offload. This new white paper from MongoDB explores how an ODL works, when to use it, and how companies in finance, retail, and telecom are using it to move faster and simplify their architectures. 👇 https://lnkd.in/g_rMCt7M

🚀 Next up in the video series I've been working on: Migrating MSSQL workloads to AWS One of the more complex tasks we hear about from customers is moving MSSQL workloads from an on-premises data centre to the cloud. There are a many moving parts: mapping configurations, planning the architecture and avoiding errors during the migration. That’s exactly where NetApp Workload factory comes in. In this short video, I show how it can help simplify the entire process: From assessment to execution, using built-in best practices and automation. 📽️ Watch how easy it can be: https://lnkd.in/dYKu9GuN Have you tackled MSSQL migrations to AWS? Prime Day 2025 just delivered record-breaking results - and the infrastructure behind it is absolutely mind-blowing. While customers saved billions on deals, AWS services were processing unprecedented volumes: 🤖 524M commands sent to 7,000+ robots (160% increase from 2024) ⚡ 1.7 TRILLION Lambda invocations per day 🔄 151M DynamoDB requests per second 📊 1.5 QUADRILLION ElastiCache requests daily 🛡️ 8.9T security events monitored per hour But here's what really shows AI at scale: AWS processed more than 626 billion inference requests with Sagemaker. Alexa+, Rufus, and AI Shopping Guides - powered by 87,000 AWS Inferentia/Trainium chips - helped millions discover deals faster than ever. This isn't just about retail success. It's a masterclass in cloud architecture at planetary scale. When your infrastructure can handle tens of trillions of operations while maintaining single-digit millisecond response times, you're not just supporting commerce - you're redefining what's possible. https://lnkd.in/e88pNytX #AWS #CloudComputing #AI #Infrastructure #TechInnovation
