Heather Payne shared thisGood design is about understanding your customers. Today Google nailed it. Most people in the UK will be celebrating David Attenboroughs 100th birthday as he is such an iconic figure. People aged 5 to 105 have watched his nature documentaries and have truly connected with him. The all page takeover that google created harnesses how people feel about this day and recognises him for the legend he is. Happy Birthday David Attenborough and Bravo Google! #cx #design davidattenborough

Heather Payne shared thisIf you have teenagers going through exam stress right now, or young people who are struggling with life in general, I want to take a moment to tell you a story, which I hope you will tell them. 33 years ago my dad died, 3 years later I was at school and suddenly my world turned upside down as we were told to get under our desks. "There is a man with a gun who is coming, be as quiet as you can." That day will forever be remembered as the Dunblane massacre. Those 2 events changed my life forever, I went completely off the rails. I went to my final year exams in what I can only describe as an emotional mess. My exam results reflected that and I didn't get into the course I had been dreaming about for years. I thought my life had ended, I thought I had messed up my life forever. I felt like there was nothing this world had to offer. Looking back I want to hug my teenage self and say - don't worry it will all get better. Don't worry you will be offered an amazing course through clearing and you will love it. You will get an amazing graduate job, a career that surpasses your dreams and a family that loves you. You will be happy, you will feel joy you could never have imagined. Just keep going, you will get there. So for everyone who is struggling, your job right now is to keep going. The darkness will pass. You won't be sad forever. Take the little steps, every step takes you towards your future and it will be bright. #mentalhealth #keepgoing #motivation

Heather Payne shared thisReposting for reach!Heather Payne shared thisAfter 10 years in architecture & engineering leader roles at Sky, I've decided to move on and I'm now actively looking for my next career opportunity. I've really enjoyed my time with Sky, which has remained engaging due to the great people & teamwork, the pace of change and the continued opportunity to grow my skillset. I've collaborated across the organisation on many high-impact initiatives while modernising the tech. stack (React, TypeScript, GraphQL, GCP, etc.), reducing tech. debt and scaling to 2 million sales quotes per hour. I have extensive hands-on technical leadership experience, from start-up through to enterprise scale, working with diverse technologies. I'd really appreciate if anyone in my network would repost or let me know if you have any openings for a Principal Engineer / Staff Engineer / hands-on Architect in the Leeds / West Yorkshire / North Yorkshire region, or fully remote. Heather Payne reacted on thisHeather Payne reacted on thisThis is my son, Raphael. He is 6 months old, still breastfeeding, still needing his mum…and I’m currently facing the reality of having to return to work earlier than I’m emotionally ready for. This month I’m receiving £697 in statutory maternity pay. My rent/mortgage alone is £1200, before bills, food, and baby essentials. This is the reality of maternity leave in the UK for many parents, especially single parents. After the initial period, statutory maternity pay drops to a level that simply doesn’t reflect the cost of living today. We often say “having children is a choice” and it is. But once that choice becomes reality, the question becomes, what support do we actually give the people raising the next generation? Because right now, for many of us, the answer is no. I’m not blaming my employer. This is about the wider system. But I do think these conversations belong in professional spaces, not just private ones. There is a quiet assumption that parents will just “manage.” But managing often means sacrificing time with a newborn in order to survive financially. I don’t think we talk about this part of parenthood enough in professional spaces. #maternityleave #maternity #statutorypay #HigherEducation #parenthood #workingparents

I also want to say a huge well done to Oasis Domestic Abuse Service for being nominated too. If you are thinking of voting, please do consider supporting Oasis as well, the recognition for the team and the work they do means a lot.Heather Payne reacted on thisWe’re incredibly proud to share that Oasis CEO Claire Fowler has been nominated for a Medway Pride LGBTQIA+ Award. Claire is nominated for the LGBTQIA+ Ally Award, recognising those who show visible allyship, challenge prejudice and uplift LGBTQIA+ communities. Claire helped create BeYou almost a decade ago, playing a key role in its beginnings. At that time, Claire says, “there was very little safe, affirming support for young LGBTQIA+ people” and “too many were facing isolation, poor mental health and unhealthy or abusive relationships without being seen or understood.” Now delivered by Oasis, BeYou supports young people across Kent and Medway to be their authentic selves and helps create more inclusive environments within schools, colleges and communities. Supporting BeYou’s next chapter is something Claire describes as “incredibly special.” This nomination recognises Claire’s long standing commitment to ensuring young people feel seen, heard and supported. Vote for Claire on this link before 22nd May 💜

Dogs sniffed each other and settled. The afternoon just held. That's the whole game. A proper thank you to UK LitPet Biotech Co.Ltd, our headline partner for the year. Perfect Pawtini toppers for the welcome drinks (for the dogs), five on the day, each formulated for a different need: → Joint & Mobility → Calming & Anxiety → Immune & Digestion → Skin & Coat → Weight & Wellness Small touch, big difference. The dogs noticed first. It's the right kind of partnership for what we're building. Functional nutrition, made properly, served as part of the day rather than pitched at it. A year of this is going to be a quiet pleasure. And to Luna The Dental Vets, who set up on the side offering complimentary dental checks for any member who wanted one. Thank you to both. Don't just chase grants... Some fantastic advice from Rachel Fletcher in our recent interview. Watch the full video to find out the full detail, but the short version is that the grant provider will always be looking for an outcome and that might not align with the direction you want your business to go. That being said, if the outcomes do marry up with your vision then they are a fantastic way to inject some cash and grow your business. You can find an invaluable grant finding resource on the FCS Associates Ltd website here: https://lnkd.in/e6RQ2KQ6 and Rachel sends out a regular grant bulletin that you can subscribe to here: https://lnkd.in/eMwKNfkB Don't forget, the Barnsley StartUp MeetUp will return in September so if you're missing your fix then head over to the YouTube channel and brush up on some of the awesome guests I've interviewed: https://lnkd.in/dygNzNg5 Enterprising Barnsley Barnsley Council South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority South Yorkshire Incubator and Accelerator Network Sheffield Digital TECH SY DMC

What actually breaks transformation programmes, technology or fragmentation? Three legacy systems. Zero single source of truth. One transformation programme to fix it. We led the mobilisation phase for a major public sector transformation replacing three legacy systems that had operated independently for years. The challenge was not technical complexity. It was operational fragmentation. Data existed in multiple places with no master version. Teams worked in silos using different methodologies. Deployment frequency was constrained by lack of data led insights. Enterprise data architecture suffered because nobody owned the complete picture. Here's what we actually did, 1. Established integrated project teams pairing our experts with client resources. 2. Teams worked together to build capability that stays after we finished. 3. Conducted workshops and hands on sessions on Agile data management. 4. Implemented master data management processes and data governance tools. 5. Created insights dashboards that gave visibility into what was actually happening. 6. Introduced KPI monitoring and feedback mechanisms so teams could see impact. 7. Delivered comprehensive training through train the trainer programmes. As a result, → 60 percent improvement in data team Agile development competency. → 40 percent increase in deployment frequency. → Pool of master trainers created who can upskill new joiners. → Single source of truth for data established across previously siloed systems. → Culture of continuous learning fostered instead of reliance on external expertise. The insight most organisations miss. Transformation fails when it treats capability building as separate from delivery. The best programmes are the ones where external specialists work alongside internal teams, not instead of them. Where knowledge transfer is designed in from day one, not added as an afterthought when contracts end. The work is not finished when systems go live. It is finished when the organisation can run, improve, and evolve those systems without external dependency. How much of your transformation budget goes to building internal capability versus buying external delivery?

AI for Services 2025: Unlocking Future Innovation Opportunities in UK Professional & Financial Services | prepared by Whitecap Consulting in collaboration with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council This report presents a strategic roadmap for harnessing artificial intelligence to drive innovation, #competitiveness, and #productivity in #theUnitedKingdom’s professional and #financialservicessectors. Developed through the Next Generation Professional & Financial Services Programme, and backed by Whitecap Consulting, UKRI, and ESRC, the study evaluates the sector’s readiness to adopt #AI, the #opportunities it presents, and the systemic barriers that must be addressed to fully leverage its transformative potential. The report identifies that AI adoption across the UK’s £240 billion professional and financial services sector is uneven but accelerating. Surveying over 500 #firms, it finds that while 63% of large institutions have implemented #AI solutions for #riskmanagement, #compliance, or #customerservice, only 28% of #SMEs report active experimentation—highlighting a stark innovation gap. Key areas of opportunity include automated document processing, algorithmic compliance monitoring, real-time #frauddetection, and the augmentation of professional advisory roles. The report also projects that targeted AI adoption could unlock up to £20 billion in productivity gains over the next decade, contingent on strategic investment in digital infrastructure, workforce upskilling, and ethical governance. Importantly, the analysis reveals a growing consensus around the need for sector-specific AI standards and collaborative ecosystems to foster trust and interoperability. In conclusion, AI for Services 2025 frames #artificialintelligence not simply as a technological tool, but as a foundational enabler of long-term resilience and global competitiveness for the UK’s knowledge-intensive service economy. The report calls for coordinated policy action, increased public-private R\&D investment, and a sector-wide commitment to inclusive innovation to ensure that AI capabilities are diffused equitably and responsibly across all segments of the professional and #financialservices landscape.

Today NHS Providers and Public Digital have published this guide on mastering supplier relationships for a digital NHS. There are some really important messages in here, particularly around understanding your entire supply chain so you can manage risks (such as cyber security) and opportunities. It’s essential that every organisation develops and maintains a robust contracts register, so that you know what you’ve bought, the value and when they expire. This helps you think strategically about how you procure and manage your suppliers. But an often forgotten part of these registers is the need to understand and think about the total cost of ownership - that includes not just the cost of the contract itself, but the cost of exiting and moving to another supplier. The cost of exiting a contract is essential to understanding the risk of a supplier and lets you plan in advance how you will manage that relationship. When developing your approach to managing suppliers, it’s also important to think about why you’re doing something - not everything should be treated the same. The types of procurement hoops you want to go through for experimentation, trials or R&D should be very different from something that is more long term and business critical. For experimentation and innovation it’s essential to simplify procurement, reduce the barriers for SMEs, and make it easy to purchase tech and services as quickly as possible. All of this means that procurement and supplier management isn’t just an operational detail - it needs board-level priority. We need to integrate these skills into our digital teams and invest in horizon scanning for new opportunities.

🔓 Unlocking the UK’s Innovation Districts: Accelerating Industrial Strategy Outcomes: a call to action As the UK Government commits £86 billion in public R&D funding by 2029/30, this is a pivotal moment to shape the future of inclusive, place-led innovation. The latest action paper from the UK Innovation Districts Group, developed in collaboration with industry, universities, and local and regional government, offers a timely and pragmatic blueprint for how we do just that. 🏙️ According to the paper, Innovation Districts are proven productivity engines, outperforming average city districts by 25%. These super-connected, public-transport accessible hubs translate research into commercial opportunity, scale businesses, and foster sustainable growth. To unlock their full potential, we need a step-change in cross-sector partnership building, strategic leadership, investment in ‘soft’ infrastructure, alongside funding, to drive long-term impact. Key recommendations include: 💷 Crowding investment into innovation • National Innovation Bonds • Investment advisory support for public and academic partners • Recognition of Innovation Districts as strategic economic infrastructure • A dedicated match funding scheme akin to a UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF) 🧭 Building pan-UK partnerships • National investor mapping and coordination • Cross-organisational, regional innovation teams 🤝 Unlocking local capacity and capability • A UK-wide innovation partnership-building programme • An innovation readiness framework to support delivery The paper notes that these recommendations are practical, fiscally neutral, and designed to accelerate innovation-led growth, whilst addressing regional disparities. It ends with a call for collective action from innovation districts, universities, industry, investors and civic leaders. ✨ Let’s not wait for perfect conditions. Let’s co-create them. Whether you're leading an innovation district, building a civic partnership, shaping academic-industry, or academic-policy collaboration, or driving local innovation, this is our moment to engage, influence, and act together. 💬 I welcome reflections from innovators, industry & university leads, academic-policy change-makers and civic partners. If these ideas resonate with your work or spark new thinking, let’s connect and collaborate: [email protected] Photo credit: Caleb Finch, Mar 2020 #UKInnovationDistrictsGroup #CivicUniversityNetwork #UPEN

Young Minds, Big Future: Children and AI in the UK The Alan Turing Institute’s latest research with children, parents, and teachers shows how generative AI is already shaping young lives. Nearly 1,800 participants shared their views. The study investigates children’s experiences and perceptions of tools like ChatGPT, raising concerns about misinformation, environmental impact, fairness, and eagerness to be involved in shaping the future of AI. Here are 6 key takeaways: 1️⃣ Early adoption is real – 1 in 4 children aged 8–12 have used generative AI, mostly ChatGPT. 2️⃣ Digital divide is widening – 52% of private school students use AI vs only 18% in state schools. 3️⃣ Special needs support – children with additional learning needs use AI more often to communicate, learn, and express themselves. 4️⃣ Mixed teacher views – 85% of teachers say AI boosts their productivity, but 72% worry it harms critical thinking in students. 5️⃣ Bias and fairness – children of colour often feel under-represented in AI outputs, highlighting the need for inclusive design. 6️⃣ Environmental concern – children worry about the energy and water costs of AI, asking for greener technology. The report reminds us that generative AI is no longer on the sidelines, it is becoming part of children’s daily lives and classrooms. Thriving UK youth will depend on equal access, strong AI literacy, and ethical design. Now is the time to guide, educate, and empower them. #FutureSkills #AILiteracy #GenAI #AIForEducation #EdTechUK #UpskillingYouth #atomcampUK https://lnkd.in/d6CsE_Ni

The Horizon scandal continues to unfold, with a recent article from BBC highlighting the significant efforts made by Fujitsu to address data issues. Despite the scale of these efforts, only one team member has stepped forward to share their account. This situation should be raising important questions about Non Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) and their role in restricting evidence being brought forward in cases like these. The UK desperately needs to consider what types of information these agreements should safeguard, versus what types of information should be shared more transparently in order to combat challenges related to accountability. #NDAs

❤️ I’m delighted to see our TIN Ventures ‘Inclusive Innovation Catalyst’ collaboration spotlighted in Tech Funding News today — and with good reason. This new venture studio is not just ambitious in scale (unlocking £30 million in co-investment, backing 50+ startups, and targeting £40 million+ in portco revenues within three years). 👉🏽 It’s purposeful: designed to address one of the UKs most persistent innovation challenges — who gets to access capital, and under what terms. 🔍 Why this matters — and why now: ⭐️ The West Midlands has lagged national averages in growth over recent years (region growing ~1.3 % annually vs UK ~2.1 % over the last three years). ⭐️ Its average salary remains below the UK mean, unemployment is elevated, and many of its districts struggle with productivity below national norms. ⭐️ Meanwhile, the region’s companies are showing appetite: smaller businesses here are more open to external finance than those elsewhere in the UK, with loan and overdraft facility growth among the highest in 2024. ⭐️ Access to equity and venture capital remains a structural hurdle: nationally, only ~15 % of VC and private equity goes to firms outside London/South East — despite those regions hosting roughly half of all SMEs. ⭐️ Disparities in pay and opportunity persist locally: race pay gaps of ~9.5 %, disability pay gaps ~17.7 %, and a gender pay gap ~12 % in the West Midlands. 👉🏽 In short: the region has enormous latent potential. What’s missing is embedded, equity-sensitive infrastructure that connects capital, capability, and community. That’s why the Inclusive Innovation Catalyst ‘Venture Studio’ (aligned to the The Venture Studio Forum #VSI) is so vital. Backed by Future Planet Capital Regional (which manages the West Midlands Combined Authority Co-Investment Fund), and co-designed with The 51% Club, and integrating the Greater Things prototype model - this is a coalition built to move systems, not just businesses. I’m super proud to be part of leading this timely agenda. Because bridging aspiration and opportunity means more than incremental growth - it means rewriting the rules so that diverse founders and underserved communities no longer remain on the edge, but become central beneficiaries. #InclusiveInnovation #LevellingUp #RegionalGrowth #VentureCapital #CivicUnibersities #DiversityInTech Mel Selvon Ellyard Hana Hussain Phoebe Kay Asher Craig Professor Mark Durkin Chaitali Patel Dr. Aqueel Wahga Fidele Mutwarasibo PhD Sarah Hayes Rupert Lyle Tara Attfield-Tomes Cliff Dennett Cornerstone VC Matthew Burris JT Benton ⸻
