There's been a lot of talk about ITIL 5 recently but I have been reviewing the Agile processes as part of an early spring clean on my qualifications. I've captured the Agile Guiding principles below to help me understand them better and thought I would share this with you. We often talk about Agile in software, but the principles work just as well in everyday life. A simple example: booking a holiday. ✈️ Here’s how the 12 Agile Guiding Principles show up when you plan a trip. 1. Satisfy the customer through early delivery You don’t wait months to plan everything. You quickly lock in the key value items first: destination and dates. 2. Welcome changing requirements Flights get expensive. Weather changes. Budgets shift. You adapt the plan instead of forcing the original idea. 3. Deliver working value frequently You book in increments: flight first, then hotel, then transfers, then activities. 4. Business and users collaborate daily If travelling with others, you continuously align on cost, timing and expectations. 5. Build around motivated individuals Everyone owns part of the plan: one researches hotels, another finds flights, another plans activities. 6. Face-to-face communication is most effective A quick conversation beats endless messages about where to go and what to book. 7. Working product is the primary measure A confirmed booking is better than a perfect spreadsheet of ideas. 8. Sustainable pace You don’t plan for 12 hours straight. You make steady progress without burning out. 9. Continuous attention to technical excellence You check reviews, policies, luggage rules and cancellation terms to reduce future problems. 10. Simplicity – maximise the work not done You avoid over-planning every minute and focus only on what adds real value to the trip. 11. Self-organising teams create the best results The group naturally decides who does what instead of one person controlling everything. 12. Regular reflection and adjustment After each booking step, you review: Does this still fit our goal and budget? Agile isn’t just a delivery framework. It’s a way of thinking about change, value and collaboration — whether you’re launching software or booking a week in the sun. How have you seen Agile principles work outside IT? I would like your feedback please relating to business accreditations and certifications (words that tend to be used interchangeable these days) for a company, as opposed to an individual. Do you think answering yes to ten questions and showing a few examples of how you put your responses into practice, a process that takes less than one hour, should be called an accreditation? And just to be absolutely clear, I am NOT talking about the difference between what is an accreditation and what is a certification, because most people use the words interchangeably. So while here I am talking about accreditation, I could interchange the word for certification. So, does the process mentioned really have any value as an accreditation (or as a certification)? A pledge, absolutely. But is that process really an accreditation..... Shouldn't business accreditations/certifications be robust and evidence-based? Doesn't anything less than that leave it open for box-ticking and a little bit of 'creativity!' Doesn't it muddy the waters in terms of what really is a worthwhile accreditation/certification? What do you think?
