A list of characters appearing in Doctor Elise.
Main Characters
- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Linden is a dutiful prince, but is bogged down by his tragic past and is obsessed with getting his revenge. He only begins healing from his pain after growing close to Elise, who always does her best to provide him comfort.
- Perfectly Arranged Marriage: They have been engaged to be married since childhood. Elise always loved Linden ever since her first life, but he did not love her back in the original timeline. In the new timeline, however, Linden does come to reciprocate Elise's feelings.
Elise de Clarence | Jihyun Song | Aoi Takamoto
Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa

The main character of the story. In her first life as Elise de Clarence, she was the tyrannical Empress of the Britta Empire, who the people executed for her sins. After her death, she is reincarnated into the modern day as an orphan named Jihyun Song (Aoi Takamoto in the anime), who seeks to atone for her crimes as Elise by becoming a surgeon and saving as many lives as possible. She succeeds, only for her second life to be tragically cut short by a plane crash — after which, she begins her third life, this time as Elise once again. With the combined knowledge of her first two lives, Elise seeks to correct the sins of her past and bring about a happier future for all her loved ones.
- The Ace: Thanks to her knowledge of modern medicine, she is flat-out the greatest doctor on the planet.
- Adaptational Nice Guy: Due to being a Compressed Adaptation, the anime shows very little of what kind of person she was in her first life, making it a little jarring that her family got executed and she herself was burned at the stake when her depicted sins were limited to being rude to the maids and pulling petty pranks on the daughter of a rival house.
- Affectionate Nickname: Chris calls her "Lise" to show how much he adores her.
- Mikhail calls her “Dear sister”, although she does insist on him eventually calling her "Lise" too like her brothers do.
- Ambiguous Situation: The story never clarifies what kind of crimes she committed to warrant being burned at the stake in her first life, other than acting like a Royal Brat. It's later implied that Elise was actually never that evil, but rather a victim of Linden, who was all but stated to have become a tyrant in the wake of his revenge purge.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Her older brother Lenne is the only person who never indulged her when she was a Royal Brat, and continues to treat her as a nuisance even after he sees her Character Development. That being said, he's still cares for her and is deeply proud of all her accomplishments.
- Best Friend: With Mikhail. One of the reasons why her relationship with Linden in her first life began to sour is because he killed Mikhail as part of his revenge purge. They later become Best Friends-in-Law, after Elise marries Linden again in her third life.
- Bookworm: As a doctor who likes to keep up with the latest medical advancements, Elise spends a lot of her free time studying medical texts whenever she isn't working. It's particularly bad at the beginning of the story when she's studying for the physician's exam—even when she's locked up in the Ivory Tower while waiting for the results of an impending investigation, her only concern is studying.
- Career Versus Man: A major conflict in the first half of the story is Elise trying to get out of her Arranged Marriage with Linden so she can devote herself to being a doctor, her true passion. As a royal consort is not allowed to have a second occupation, marrying Linden will force her to give up her career, something she does not want—especially since she no longer loves Linden as she did in her first life. After she and Linden end up falling in love with each other, Linden helps her Take a Third Option by asking his father to institute a law allowing the Empress to have a second occupation, allowing Elise to continue her medical work.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: Owing to her occupation as a doctor, Elise always tries to save as many lives as she can, even when it's to her detriment. This nearly backfires on her when she saves the life of Duchess Harber; while she manages to save the duchess's life because she used an unproven medical technique to do it (namely, cutting the duchess's neck open and putting a straw in the opening to remove the blockage from her airflow), Elise is nearly mistaken for harming the duchess instead and confined as a result while an investigation is made into the treatment she used.
- Crazy-Prepared: Elise always seems to be carrying a bottle of rubbing alcohol on her persons whenever she goes out.
- Dramatic Irony: Due to the cast being unaware of Elise's reincarnation, much of her actions had this effect:
- Lenne points out that Elise being a Spoiled Brat and a complete Jerkass makes her lack the qualifications to be a good empress. Something that Elise agreed with due to recalling her previous lives. However, all the Character Development that Elise went through due to her Reincarnation made her so humble and more virtuous than her initial self that she eventually ends up being far more qualified for the position than she initially could have credited herself.
- Dude Magnet: She's incredibly beautiful, and thanks to her Character Development during her second life, also very kind and selfless. As a result, she attracts multiple admirers, with Linden, Mikhail, and Graham explicitly stated to be in love with her.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: At first in Crimea, despite already having earned a reputation as a genius surgeon, Elise couldn't affect much of any changes done to the state of the field hospital due to her lack of actual rank and authority, forcing her to request said authority from Linden.
- Famed in Story: Over the course of the story, Elise becomes famous and admired throughout the world for her medical prowess. At least one character explicitly states that they entered the medical profession because she inspired them.
- Friendly Enemy: Even though their families are political opponents, that does not stop Elise and Julienne from being best friends—at least, after Elise apologizes to Julienne for all the terrible things she did to her while they were growing up. The rest of House Childe similarly grows fond of Elise, if to a lesser extent.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair and in her third life, she has decided to devote herself to using her knowledge in medicine to help people.
- Heroic Self-Deprecation: She often deflects praise and downplays her good heart, believing she's not worthy of such acclaim due to her previous life's actions.
- Humble Hero: When Linden disguised as Ron comes by to gift Elise with an expensive and flashy necklace to thank her for saving Randall's life, she politely declines his offer, mentioning how she was only doing what she could as a doctor.
- The Illegible: Proving that she truly is a doctor at heart, Elise has terrible handwriting. Most notably, the only reason she doesn't get a perfect score on the physician's exam is because her answers for the two easiest questions are so illegible that the scorers can't read them, forcing them to mark the questions wrong.
- Improbable Age: Zigzagged. From the perspective of her peers in Britta, Elise is incredibly young even for a supposed genius doctor, which is why so many have doubts about her abilities at first. However, she has Past-Life Memories from both her first life as Elise and her second life in the modern day. Combining both, including the number of years she spent in medical school for the latter, and her mental age is around middle age at the start of the story, an age that is more in line with someone of her skill in medicine.
- Loves My Alter Ego: Because of how their relationship ended in her first life, Elise is initially reluctant to get close to Linden again, and instead develops feelings for his alter-ego Lord Ron first. Even after she begins to let her guard down around Linden, she doesn't allow herself to fully embrace her love for him again until she learns he's Ron and realizes his feelings for her are real and sincere.
- The Magnificent: During the Crimean War, the soldiers Elise cares for at the field hospital start calling her "The Lady with the Lamp", an affectionate nickname paying homage to the lamp she always carries with her while comforting them.
- Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Downplayed. Jihyun/Aoi was already a clear-cut Ace in the modern world before she was re-reincarnated back to Elise. Having all those same qualifications in 1850s fantasy Britain and knowing everything from the start only pushes her genius from explicable to seeming downright supernatural.
- Royal Brat: In Elise's first life, she is the definition of a spoiled, sheltered rich lady who doesn't care about anyone else but herself. This influenced her downfall in her first life.
- Sweet Tooth: Elise in both lives has a fondness for sweets, especially strawberry cake. This is how Linden starts to win her over after she had turned down more expensive gifts like jewelry.
- Universally Beloved Leader: In direct contrast to her first life, Elise eventually becomes the most beloved figure in the empire due to her kind and generous personality, and for her many great feats as a doctor. Even the Aristocratic faction, her family's political enemies, have a positive view of her, mainly thanks to several of them owing their lives and the lives of their loved ones to her. When they're forced to take her captive thanks to finding out their plans to assassinate Linden, they immediately dismiss the idea of killing her—both because they don't want to and because the public backlash wouldn't be worth it.
- Workaholic: After reincarnating again as Elise, she has started to develop and made a habit of overworking herself in the name of righting all the mistakes she had made in her first life. Unfortunately, thanks to her naturally fragile constitution, she tends to overwork herself and fall sick, much to the worry of her family and Linden.
Song Jihyun/Aoi Takamoto

- The Ace: In the medical field, she was regarded as being one of the best surgeons in her field.
- Adaptation Expansion: In the anime, Jihyun/Aoi's life in the 21st century is expanded upon, including what she was doing on the flight that eventually killed her.
- Adaptational Nationality: In the original novel and webcomic, she’s Korean. In the anime, she’s Japanese.
- The Atoner: She became a doctor in this life to make up for all the things she did in her first life.
- Belated Injury Realization: When the plane she's on crashes, she doesn't hesitate to start looking for survivors and give medical treatment to those in need. Of course she doesn't notice how injured she is because of adrenaline, but once she does notice that something's wrong, it's already too late for her and she dies from her injuries.
- Brainy Brunette: Jihyun/Aoi is one of these as she's one of the top surgeons in the country.
- Bully Magnet: She was relentlessly bullied for being an orphan. Elise considers this Laser-Guided Karma for how awful she acted in her first life.
- Conveniently an Orphan: It’s unknown what happened to her birth parents, but she was left at a children’s home as a baby.
- Dub Name Change: The Japanese translation and dub for the anime renamed Song Jihyun to Takamoto Aoi.
- Friendless Background: As a result of being an orphan, she had a lot of trouble making friends growing up.
Crown Prince Linden de Romanoff | Ron
Voiced by: Yōhei Azakami, Satoshi Hino (as his Ron disguise)

The Crown Prince of the Britta Empire. Linden is the deuteragonist of the story and Elise's main love interest. In her first life, Elise was in love with him and eventually entered an Arranged Marriage with him. However, Linden did not love her back and eventually had her executed for the many crimes she committed during her time as empress. When Elise starts her third life, she tries to get her betrothal to Linden dissolved to avoid her execution at his hands, only to end up developing feelings for his alter-ego, Ron.
- Broken Bird: Although Linden tries to hide it, he's still traumatized by his mother and sister's deaths as a child. So much so that as an adult, he's still carrying the trauma with him and closed himself off to the world.
-
Cast as a Mask: In the anime, his Ron identity is voiced by a different voice actor than his usual self. - Fallen Hero: Elise's memories of the first timeline all but state he became a tyrant after ascending the throne and slaughtering the Aristocratic faction he held responsible for his mother and sister's deaths. Contrary to Elise's claims, it's strongly implied that her crimes were never severe enough for execution and that she was a victim of his tyranny.
- First Guy Wins: He is Elise's first and only love, and the one who marries her in the end.
- Frame-Up: During Elise's award ceremony, he gets accused of trying to poison his father when Minchester suddenly collapses from a heart attack. Although no one had any proof that it was poison, Amsel takes advantage of the chaos to slander him in the press.
- The Insomniac: He still gets nightmares about the day his mother and sister died.
- Kill the Ones You Love: In the first timeline, he succeeded in his revenge against the Childes, but had to kill his younger half-brother Mikhail in the process. Their interactions in the new timeline make it clear that Linden genuinely didn't want to do this and still loves Mikhail—he even offers his brother his own territory/kingdom in exchange for not opposing his revenge.
- King Incognito: He frequently inspects Londo using a magical artifact to change his appearance. He later uses this disguise to meet with Elise (who is unaware of his true identity) without formality and court etiquette to taint their interactions.
- Luminescent Blush: When Elise is examining him for a routine doctor's exam, he starts blushing furiously when she starts pressing her fingers against his neck (to check his thyroid for problems).
- Revenge: The only thing that motivates him these days is finding the people that drove his mother and sister to suicide and making them pay for what they've done.
- Take a Third Option: Instead of killing or sparing Queen Marian, he opts to exile her instead. This way, she doesn't get off scot-free for her crimes, and he doesn't have to kill Mikhail (who will do anything to protect his mother).
- Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He’s aloof and closed off from people, not that it takes away from how attractive he is.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: In the first timeline, Linden only grew colder and more ruthless after finally taking his revenge on the Childes and the Aristocratic faction, and it’s implied that this was the real reason for Elise's initial death.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Flashbacks reveal he was a cheerful child growing up, only for his disposition to grow cold after his mother and sister were falsely accused of treason, imprisoned, and eventually committed suicide by throwing themselves off the roof of the Ivory Tower—with their bodies landing right in front of Linden, traumatizing him.
- Vengeance Feels Empty: Even after he’s gotten his revenge in the first timeline, he has to live with the fact that he has so much blood on his hands and that he permanently destroyed his relationship with Elise (who was also friends with his brother Mikhail). He threw away his happiness for the pursuit of revenge and was left with nothing in the end.
- You Killed My Father: To Marian and Amsel in part for their involvement in the deaths of his mother and sister, and to Louis Nicholas for his part in killing his older brother.
Teresa Hospital
Graham de Fallon
Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya, Shizuka Ishigami (Young Graham)

- Always Someone Better: Although he does try his best and would have been considered to be a genius in this world, he's no match for Elise's skills and medical expertise, especially since she has medical knowledge from the 21st century.
- Cruel to Be Kind: On her first day interning at his hospital, he placed her in the ward with patients that were beyond all saving hoping that she would have been scared off by these cases. He was instead surprised that she not only cleaned the ward up, but also helped treat all of the patients admitted there without any taking any breaks for hours.
- Dark and Troubled Past: He lost his entire family during the Laurage epidemic. Yodelle is is only remaining family he has left now.
- Defrosting Ice King: When he first met Elise, he was cold and aloof towards her, thinking she was nothing more than just another spoiled rich girl who was fooling around. After she helps him in saving Yodelle's life, he becomes kinder and friendlier towards her.
- Hard Work Hardly Works: Although Dr. Fallon studied for many years to get where he is now, from his perspective, Elise showing up on the first day and surpassing him in all fields makes him feel like all his hard work was for nothing.
- Impoverished Patrician: He was once part of a noble household, but all he lost it all after his family all died during the Laurage epidemic.
- Inconsistent Spelling: The original webcomic translates his last name as Fellon instead of Fallon.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Despite his growing feelings for Elise, he knows that she has feelings for Linden. He lets her go be with him regardless of how he felt.
- Ship Tease: With Elise once she earns his respect. Of course, she doesn't wind up with him in the end.
- Stern Teacher: He may be strict with his students, but he knows when to be humble and acknowledge them when they show genuine promise.
- Young and in Charge: He's one of the youngest physicians at Teresa Hospital, yet he's only second to none next to the actual director.
Gothe
Voiced by: Manta Yamamoto

- Cassandra Truth: He doesn't believe Graham when he tells him that Elise was the one who'd saved Randall’s life until he hands him over the report of what happened.
De Clarence Household
El de Clarence
Voiced by: Yōji Ueda

- Doting Parent: Elise is the apple of his eye and when he finds out that Dr. Graham had assigned her to the ward filled with sick and dying vagrants, it takes Elise having to stop him from storming in there and wanting to take Dr. Graham’s head off right then and there.
- Good Parents: Elise remembers him being one of these in the first timeline a little too late as she's about to be executed herself.
- Heroic Sacrifice: In the first timeline, El sacrificed himself for the sake of Elise.
Emily de Clarence
Voiced by: Aki Sugawa

- Delicate and Sickly: In the first timeline, she passed away from an illness.
- Good Stepmother: She has a good relationship with all three of her stepkids.
- Second Love: She married El after his first wife passed away.
Lenne de Clarence
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono

- Aloof Older Brother: He's the only one who is skeptical of her change in behavior at first. Even after she proves she really has changed, he treats her no differently than before and keeps her at a distance.
- Heroic Sacrifice: In the first timeline, he and their father would sacrifice themselves to protect Elise.
- Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His left eye is obscured by his fringe, reflecting his stern and aloof nature.
- Inconsistent Spelling: Sometimes his name is spelt as Renne instead of Lenne. The fandubs use the latter spelling as his official name.
- Jerkass Has a Point: Although he acts cold and aloof towards her, Lenne points out that Elise being a Spoiled Brat and a complete Jerkass makes her lack the qualifications to be a good empress. Of course once he sees her change of heart, he changes his opinion of her.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite acting so cold and aloof towards her, he's the only member of her family who respects her choices. When she volunteers to join the Crimean War in place of Chris, he's the only one who doesn't try to change her mind. Instead, he gives her a gun and teaches her how to shoot so she can protect herself.
- Tough Love: Although both their parents spoiled Elise rotten growing up, Lenne never once indulged or enabled her spoiled and selfish behaviour.
- Workaholic: As a member of the knights, he never seems to have any spare time to himself.
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono

- Anger Born of Worry: After Elise saves Duchess Haber’s life and gets locked away in the Ivory Tower, Chris is the one that angrily chews her out on how reckless and dangerous her actions were.
- Cuddlebug: He's the most physically affectionate member of Elise's family, expressing himself through hugging.
- Jumped at the Call: In the first timeline, he volunteered to fight in the Crimean War. This would wind up costing him his life on as he died on the battlefield later. Elise taking his place in the war ends up saving his life, even if he was against the idea of his sister taking his place.
- Second Love: To Julienne.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: Unlike Lenne who refuses to spoil and enable her behaviour, Chris is a total softie around Elise, so he winds up spoiling her rotten.
Marie

The Royal Family
Minchester de Romanoff
Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue

- Delicate and Sickly: In the first timeline, it was revealed that he'd died from an illness that back then was unknown and untreatable. In this new timeline, Elise manages to deduce that he's suffering from type 1 diabetes thanks to the medical knowledge she obtained in the modern era. He later develops lymphoma and almost dies from it if not for Elise saving his life.
- Like a Son to Me: Although Elise is the daughter of one of his friends, he certainly sees her as one of his own daughter, especially after she's been betrothed to Linden.
- Morality Pet: To Elise. In the first timeline, even when Elise was at her most bratty and tyrannical, she always remembered how warm and kind he was towards her. She was visibly distraught when he’d passed away.
- Plot-Triggering Death: After passing away in the first timeline, Linden becomes emperor in his place. From there, his ruthless behaviour begins to spiral out of control, leading to Elise's death.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: When Elise asks to break off her engagement in the new timeline to pursue becoming a doctor, Minchester is more than willing to do so, but under the caveat that she only interns a privately hospital for 6 months under an alias. When Elise is later caught between having to quit her job as a doctor to become empress or breaking off her engagement a second time, Linden instead has his father instate a law where an empress can have a second occupation of her choosing.
- Useless Bystander Parent: While he's a strong ruler and the absolute authority in Britta, he's still bound by politics and cannot afford to fully side with one faction over the other. This had fatal consequences for his family when his first concubine, Marian and her brother Amsel framed his wife, Queen Evelyn and their daughter for treason out of jealousy. Minchester knew they were innocent but was unable to clear their names, forcing him to lock them up in the Ivory Tower to avoid executing them. Being stuck in the tower for so long drove Evelyn to despair, causing her to commit murder-suicide with their daughter by jumping off the top of the tower—with their bodies landing right in front of poor Linden. Because Marian and Amsel were a part of the powerful Childe family, they were never properly punished for their actions, driving Linden to claim the throne and try to get his revenge and putting him on a collision course with his brother Mikhail, who is also Marian's son. Essentially, a family feud is brewing right in front of his eyes, but rather than doing anything about it, all Minchester does is just standby and let his sons potentially plunge the empire into a bloodbath for the sake of the throne.
- Youthful Freckles: Although he’s a lot older than most examples here, he has a little smattering of them across the bridge of his nose in the webcomic.
- You Remind Me of X: According to him, Elise was just as spirited and outspoken as her deceased mother.
Mikhail de Romanoff
Voiced by: Sōma Saitō

- Affectionate Nickname: Elise calls him “Mil”.
- Best Friend: To Elise. His death in the first timeline was what permanently ruined Linden’s relationship with her. Although he later becomes her Best Friend In Law after Elise and Linden get married in the third timeline.
- Big Damn Heroes: He saves Elise in time when she's about to be assassinated and prevented from getting to the hospital on time to help save his father.
- Conflicting Loyalty: On hand, he loves his mother and would do anything to make her happy. On the other hand, he loves his brother Linden, but his mom and uncle were the reason why he turned out the way he did.
- Curtains Match the Window: His hair and eyes are the same shade of blondish yellow.
- The Exile: After Linden exiles Marian from Britta, Mikhail opts to join her.
- The Gadfly: Mikhail is free-spirited and does like to tease Elise from time to time, but he does do it out of affection for her.
- Hopeless Suitor: He's in love with Elise, but she only sees him as a friend.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He, like Graham is in love with Elise. Unfortunately for him, she only sees him as a friend, but he's willing to let her go if that's what she wants.
- Momma's Boy: He'd do anything to protect his mother, even if that meant going against Linden. This would cost him his life in the first timeline however as he wound up as one of Linden's victims as he descended into tyranny.
- Morality Chain: Linden in the first timeline was hesitant about wanting to hurt Mikhail and even offered him some land if he didn't stand in the way of his revenge against the de Childe family. When Mikhail however refused out of filial piety towards his mother and cousins, Linden had him executed. From there on out, Linden because more ruthless and cruel after this.
- Sins of Our Fathers: His mother and uncle were responsible for the indirect deaths of Linden’s mother and sister.
- You Can't Go Home Again: It's downplayed in that even though exiling Marian from Britta was the best option to make sure she was properly punished for what she did and to keep Mikhail from dying, he choses to follow her into exile. The catch is that as long as she's still alive, he can't return home. He takes it all in stride though, saying that he's always wanted to travel around the world.
Marian de Romanoff
A noblewoman from the de Childe family who married into the royal family as a result of a political marriage. She was originally Minchester's first consort and Mikhail's mother. Amsel is her brother.
- Ambiguous Situation: It’s never revealed what exactly caused her Sanity Slippage, though it’s implied Evelyn’s death had something to do with it.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Her jealousy over Minchester choosing a peasant over her causes her to conspire with her brother to accuse Queen Evelyn and her daughter of treason and get them locked away in the Ivory Tower out of spite.
- Laser-Guided Karma: She finally gets punished many years later for what she did to Linden's mother and sister via banishment from the Britta Empire.
- Sanity Slippage: Sometime after Evelyn's death, something happened to her that drove her completely insane. By the time of the present storyline, she’s a madwoman locked up in her room, completely unable to take care of herself and unable to recognize anyone that visits her, even her own son. It's implied that one of the reasons Linden decides to exile Marian is because she wouldn’t be able to appreciate a harsher sentence in her current state, with execution being a flat-out Mercy Kill.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Because the de Childe family is such a powerful and influential family, Marian got away with Evelyn and Rebecca's indirect deaths for many years.
- You Can't Go Home Again: After getting banished from her homeland, she suffers this fate. As long as she's still alive, she can never set foot on Britta soil ever again.
