Please read this post before asking questions on how it works, how to submit themes, or how to join.

Hey! This blog is for weekly TMNT Magma Jams hosted by @pvtpunsart! This event is to help foster community and engagement in the fandom; don't be afraid to leave comments or reblog with thoughts in the tags! Artists love that, and fandom thrives on connection!

Here's the low-down:

  1. Themes are announced on Fridays, and the post will contain the length of time available for the Jam. I will try to leave it open most weekends, but if I won't be available to close it it might get shortened!
  2. Jams start on Saturdays, sometime between 5PM and 7PM EST.
  3. A link to join the session will be posted at the start time, and left up until the conclusion of the session, at which point the post will be deleted.
  4. Final boards will be posted to the account the day after the Magma's conclusion
  5. Posts from the artists with close-ups of their work will be reblogged after the final boards go up; you can click here to scroll through the previous final boards!
  6. Wanna see past themes? Here's the master-page.
  7. Can't join the Magma but still wanna play? Tag us with your theme drawing and we'll reblog it as bonus art for the jam!

General housekeeping:

Please post close-ups of your work separately from the main post so it can be reblogged on its own; I will be trying to tag the artist individually on these posts for organization!

No. The Magma is for all iterations of TMNT; stop by and draw your favorite!

  • How do I join the Magma?

The timeframes that the link is posted is at the top. Click the link, and if you have an account on Magma, you will be able to join and draw.

You can check the session link tag to find the post with the link on it, if the magma is currently active.

  • When will [insert theme here] be back on the wheel?

When the wheel's options start to get limited, we'll hold a poll to find the favorites of the previous themes and add them back on. It might be a while!

  • Can I draw my FC?

The Magma is for all iterations of TMNT. This includes fan iterations.

In animation it is often that the character situated on the left side of the screen is weak, doesn't hold the power in the scene.

In that same breath, something or someone going from left to right gives us the illusion of coming back, while if it is goin in the other direction, they are going away.

Vitruvian - The Doppel of deflection. Its form is an amphitheater. The master of this emotion, lacking in validation, cannot help but bury himself beneath the excessive glimmering of the persona he built up so eagerly. This new form, seeking to regain control of its image as its master falls into unacceptable weakness, begins to act on its own, often doing whatever is necessary to gain the favor of the onlookers around him, whether those actions match the ones of those allied with him or not. The Doppel, as it believes, has always done the work to maintain this false sense of accomplishment and worth to both its master and his peers, so the true master resigns himself to the role of fleeing from the accumulated despair as it goes unchecked by the absence of his bravado, distracting it from attacking the false form- the only thing he has that is truly his. One can catch sight of the master through the tinted glass glinting on the ground underneath it, but should anyone acknowledge the cold truth of his existence, the Doppel will panic, stop everything, and mercilessly lunge at its new target with a fervor to scratch out the sight and the memory from their minds, no matter whose mind that is.

AKA: I'M BACK IN THE FUCKING BUILDING AGAIN

Where the HELL do I start. This has history. When I first got into Rise, in February of 2024, the first thing I did was try to mashup existing hyperfixations with the new one. I was obsessed with the doppels from the Madoka Magica spinoff Magia Record around this time- which I still am frankly- and I ended up making a doppel for Leo, with all these notes about the design and how they connected to him as a character. ...I had only watched the movie. I was a little scoundrel and didn't know ANYTHING about Leo's character and I tried to analyze his character. HORRORS. Also lowkey it was 😬kind of Not Very Good design wise I vowed myself to redo it one day, and had been steadily writing down changes as I thought of them, but never put it into action other than screaming in my best friend's DMs about it. And then I found out Doppelganger was a theme on the @weeklymagmas wheel. And I freaked the fuck out. I knew what I had to do. Even as I write this, I'm sure there's aspects of the design I could improve. But this is all based on the characterization I've had of him for the last 2 1/2 years (?????????? 2 1/2 YEARS HAVE PASSED?????) and goddammit if I'm not proud of it even just a little bit.

I will now be including design notes and a cut below so I can yap about everything in peace and passion and if you're interested then YAYYYY but if not then it's skippable. ALSO EXPLAINING THIS CONCEPT DOES GET INTO SPOILERS FOR MADOKA MAGICA/MAGIA RECORD BC THAT'S WHAT THE DOPPELS ARE BASED ON SO IF YOU DONT WANT SPOILERS THEN DONT LOOK

A Double Feature Magma... Technically

OOOhoho doppelgängers, what a fun prompt this was. Now I am a bit exhausted from art fight, so definitely not as much done as I like. But also I suppose I wasn't aiming for that many pieces! Though I certainly did have ideas hehahea. Both pieces I'd say are connected!

So first up we have a very blatant Goosebumps "Stay Out Of The Basement" reference... which is really the whole idea of both pieces. With Donnie accidentally making a plant copy of himself that... kinda takes over. I definitely had some mild trouble with this piece, mainly the perspective of the stairs but I think it came out well. Of course it was hard to portray the plant copy Donnie since he's suppose to.. for the most part, look nearly identical with a few minor details. But one of the biggest tells is being injured and bleeding green goop though with some red still in there. Hence the injury on his arm. I did have a lot of fun with this, though I wish I had made the shadows more intense... I was a bit worried about covering too much of my work ahgh-- but it's fine! I like it :]. And the second one I think is much more unsettling

And two is ahem, a climax of things. Donnie's been captured for a bit. And the now more planty copy showing of the... actively growing copies of the others. They've all got a wood texture to their plastrons and shells, except copy Donnie's who's is vines and leaves, and just.. at varying states of completion. They're so aggressive because.. of being made from carnivorous plants, and of course instead of bugs... it's meat they're after. So there's a lot of that in there! Like the 'petals' the brothers are emerging from are loosely based on butterwort, their mouths that have the little strange tendrils where their tongues should be is inspired by the little trigger hairs on the inside of a venus fly trap.. and so is the color of their teeth when more planty. And the red goop dripping from their mouth is NOT blood! It's red nectar :D! Aka what carnivorous plants use to lure in their prey, and it has a double use here. As it may be tantalizing a bit for the turtles smell wise they're not bugs, but seeing their siblings possibly bleeding from their mouths? Terrifying! They gotta go check on them! Also their bodies are made of the vines/can pull apart to look more plant like, but also can pull together to seamlessly look normal. But there is always something off... also I felt like how the mode lighting in 'Stay Out Of The Basement' is green for that planty feel... in Donnie's garden lab it'd be violet. Not just because it's Donnie, but because that's the color of grow lights for plants! So it felt fitting. Something once used to grow something beautiful is now growing a nightmare <3

These two pieces really revealing one of my many comic ideas that I have and wanted to do- it just personally I have a fair amount I want to do before I'd get to this one, though I have some scripts already laid out for some!! Which is good! But regardless I'm glad to get to draw some of my ideas out here. These are subject to change of course but who knows!

Overall this magma was fun and creepy, many an unsettling and daunting sight! With some wholesome and cool sprinkled in there of course! Thank you of course to @weeklymagmas for hosting as always!
