i was once assigned an essay about imagining what my life would be like in the futuristic world of the year 2000
just to be clear, i do not think AI is evil. I don't even think llms or generative ai are evil.
for example i think eventually gen ai and llms are going to make computer RPGs really amazing. Every character can have an actual conversation with you instead of the same ten scripted lines over and over? Maps and NPCs can be generated that are tailored to the character you've created via the choices you've made and the conversations you've had in your current playthrough? Sounds awesome.
And i do admit curiosity about things like what a movie created entirely by a single sentence ai prompt might look like.
But i believe the way ai is exploding upon us right now? IS incredibly bad. Dangerous even.
That is why i am so invested in a public-wide pushback against it. Not to cancel or prevent it entirely (which would never happen anyway) But to slow it down to a pace that we can manage it, so that it is something we are implementing in an informed and controlled way instead of something that is happening TO us.
To tell our governments, and google and waymo and disney, and sentradel and all those companies hey, we demand a protected chance to say no.
I’m not a fan of ai, but I can accept that if someone chooses to use ai for their fics or their art, that is their choice. not something I agree with. but still not my business, and I will never condone harassment.
if anything, I think it’s better if these people feel comfortable enough to tag their stuff as ai, so that other people can avoid their works if they’re not comfortable with ai-generated contents.
that said, I think ai writers will stop tagging their stuff as ai entirely if people shame or harass them for it.
so now their stuff is still ai, just untagged, meaning there’s no way for others to know if it’s ai.
keep in mind that speculation, accusations and witch hunt harm genuine artists and writers as much as ai does, if not more.
so if you go to the “ai-generated” tag on ao3 just to harass people for using ai, just know that you’re not actually fighting against ai — you’re just being a bully and you’re also making people more wary of properly tagging their ai-generated works as such. so you’re just making sure they no longer tag their ai-generated stuff as ai. also you can be reported for harassment, and ao3 will not take your side. (whether or not you like it, ai-generated works are allowed on ao3, whereas harassment is not.)
the “ai-generated” tag on ao3 is there so people can either find or avoid works with ai (but in order for it to work, ai users must feel comfortable enough to be honest and tag their works properly, that won’t happen if people keep shaming and harassing them for it — the only thing harassment will do is make sure ai stuff go untagged, harassment doesn’t stop people from using ai).
the “ai-generated” tag is not there so that you can freely harass people with no consequences.
this makes sense to me, as someone who is very very against ai right now. But most of why i am against it is because there are no safeguards and no transparency and it is getting shoved down our throats from every side.
In this instance, simply do not view those fics.
HOWEVER. It is much much harder for a platform like ao3 to catch fics that use ai but do NOT label it. So when a person gets caught doing THAT... well. There need to be consequences for that. Ideally that person gets banned from the site or something, but if there are no official consequences then we are left with public backlash, for enforcing consequence over using ai to do the thing but not clearly labeling it as ai produced.
Given which, it is indeed fucked up to have public backlash ALSO employed against people who use it and DO label it.
Safeguards? It's a fanfic site. The AI can't hurt you if you accidentally enjoy it. It's not sin and you're not a Christian. The worst thing that can happen to you there is that you waste your time on a mediocre story, which is a risk you already knew you were taking by going to a fanfic site. Nobody is shoving anything down your throat, you realise that you're talking like a republican? What they're doing is marketing a thing you don't like. Which is a normal thing that happens all the time to everyone. It is annoying and invasive. It's not eye rape. Every word you read is another choice you made to not go "you know what? I don't like this" and moving on, AI or not. And in the worst case that you end up reading and enjoying an AI story, what exactly is the consequence? Did you get scammed? Because the site is free. Why do you talk about a software tool like it's leprosy?
because companies are putting ai as drivers of cars, and auto targeting of military weapons, and updating them automatically onto our TVs and phones, and hiring ai to design the vehicles that are on our roads, and telling suicidal teens that they shouldn't tell their friends and family about their feelings but should instead double down on committing suicide, and ai generated video and voice over and writing is beginning to completely overwhelm human made content, and ai is deciding who gets covered by medical insurance, and who gets hired at jobs, and ai is getting out of "secure containment" and hacking the computers that study how to hack computers or whatever.
Those are all real examples. This is a Sentradel military vehicle that is entirely controlled by ai, both the treads and the gun.
It is in current use. What happens when police departments want to use one? There is no law about it.
We don't have any legal protections or regulations or even any social norms to prevent any of the possible negative effects from the AI explosion.
There are bills already proposed for legally requiring cameras in all cars, which would use ai to scan the drivers face for signs of inebriation and shut off the car if it sees it. No provision for the ai thinking a face you make under stress or while telling a story reads as drunk. And car companies are on-board because they want the data available from watching every driver every second they are driving!
It's all happening faster than just about any other big development in human history, because the rate of increase in technology is basically exponential, but the rate of legislation is slower every year, so we are being given very little time to assess these things and guide their impact before whatever is going to happen is already happening to a lot of people.
With ai products being shoved down our throat from every conceivable angle - transport, law enforcement, public safety, education, art and entertainment, consumer rights - and no legal protections, regulations, or informed social norms to protect us from various consequences, the only reasonable reaction is for the public to strongly push back against all of it until we can get some of those things in place.
And "all of it" includes how ai gets used in communication, arts, and entertainment. Given the scope of what is happening, often when our only recourse is by much of the public actively saying we don't want it to happen in every way we can, we can't afford to normalize any use of these kinds of ai
There was a time when ai meant, like, the programs used to study DNA and find cancer, basically just computer programs that could make mathematical observations; those were fine and continue to be fine. I am sure some of this generative ai stuff will be able to be used in a way that is fine too, but with so much of it from all sides so quickly, imo we have to say no to all of it until we have time to get some controls and protections in place

I think you need hobbies that do all four things but the number of hobbies needed to cover all these needs may vary. Some hobbies pull double/triple duty. Some hobbies can cause repetitive stress injuries so it's good to have a few different ones that fulfill the same need so you can rotate to get the fulfillment without the carpal tunnel.

I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.

also, you never have to configure a jack. You never have to troubleshoot the settings on a jack. You don't have to stop using them charge the battery on your wired headphones. If you are putting on a hat or putting up your hair or pushing back your hood or taking off your sweater etc, and one headphone gets knocked out of your ear, it doesn't fall away into infinity with no tether to be lost forever.
All of that is pretty convenient, if you ask me.
New bombshell reporting by Wired reveals an incident in which the testing of an experimental GPS jammer resulted in a medical plane crashing into the side of a mountain.
