Being crazy about a piece of media for any amount of time will leave a weird mark on you forever because years later you’ll see someone posting something about it like “can we talk about this frame” and you’ll be like “ah that frame. i know all about that frame. I was once a scholar of that frame.”

The most interesting thing about watching all the Bond movies in order hasn’t actually been anything to do with the series itself, but watching the world slowly change. Bond is kind of unique in this because it’s one of the only media franchises that’s been running uninterrupted for 60+ years, while always being set in the “present day,” primarily taking place in somewhat realistic settings and places, and not being 100% sci fi to an extent that divorces it from the overall look of it’s contemporary reality. James Bond, unlike any other series, really, allows you to watch the real world slowly change from the early 60s to 2021, in increments so brief it feels as if nothing changes from film to film, and yet by the time you get to the end everything is different

The reason why GoldenEye is my favorite is its the only one that actually acknowledges this.

the idea that a sex scene in fiction is fundamentally useless/simply for audience titillation UNLESS they’re fucking infodumping exposition while they bone or something is so funny and myopic to me. like, you really genuinely believe for real that there is NOTHING to be gained about your understanding of a story or characters simply from how they approach and engage in sex? really for real?

If you're a new writer and you're asking yourself "is this too personal, is this too much, will people think this is weird" that feeling is the exact location of your actual voice. my unwoke thought. i dont think all genderbent characters should look exactly the same as their original. it takes a certain wisdom to know when their femininity or masculinity is key to their character regardless of gender, or when the behaviors/traits tied to their gender (or the opposite gender) being important to them is actually is what's at play here. though i do think more people should make genderbent characters look exactly the same if it means there's more muscular women. end post

it's so funny to read "and there was just one bed :O" fanfiction set in time periods where sharing a bed was entirely normal. Guys, just be glad it's only the two of you.

So this past weekend my friend and I went to TCAF, we saw a ton of cool stuff but I also convinced them to go to the Arthur Conan Doyle Room with me at the Toronto Reference Library with me as I had been meaning to make the trip.

For any one who doesn't know the Arthur Conan Doyle Room is a massive collection of ACD, Sherlock Holmes, and related books (there are 25000+ books) located on the 5th floor of the library and completely open to the public. You can take items right off the shelf and read them. The library was pretty quiet that day so we had the whole collection to ourselves.

Part of the collection is in this wonderful little room. Themed after Holmes' study.

There's even a piece of the Reichenbach Falls.

Of course we have the "Watson going through it" Sidney Paget print.

When I was first told about the collection I was told to be on the look out for the copy of The Sexual Adventures of Sherlock Holmes they have, which we found on the shelf to the left of the fireplace. My friend was delighted to read a section of it out loud in that very echoey room for our amusement.

I found this Japanese language novel featuring what I can only describe as "Shonen Protagonist Sherlock Holmes" that I just needed to share with everyone.

We spent a good couple of hours looking through things, they have a lot of various editions of the canon in a number of different languages, as well as a ton of parodies, pastiches, and Holmes adjacent items. My friend and I are planning another visit later this summer as we barely scratched the surface of what the collection has.

So if you do find yourself downtown Toronto, I highly recommend stopping by.

Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.

it’s actually not misogynistic to say astrology is bogus, and it is indeed way way more misogynistic to believe that things that can’t be proven rationally through science are More Female.

ok i’ve been curious about something. can you name a character who is, all three at once,

1. canonically female (no variation)

2. canonically the protagonist of her story (if it’s an ensemble cast you have to say you can legitimately see her as The main character)

3. your personal #1 favorite character in that story (ties are acceptable)

the feelings i'm experiencing about this are akin to when a pet comes up to greet you and its owner is like "omg i never see them go up to strangers like that they're usually so shy"

I'm fairly certain the answer will be "because they don't want to spend money", but is there a reason your workplace doesn't just get a new centrifuge, maybe one with auto-balancing?

but if I were to say that I don’t think vampires inherently and universally represent queerness and that if that’s the only way you engage with any story containing a vampire then a lot of very important messages are going to go straight over your head? i would be killed to death.

ESPECIALLY an issue when vampires very explicitly represent fear of outsider immigrant non-white invaders! Dracula can absolutely be read with a queer lens but we cannot let our desire for ~spooky gay stuff~ blind us to the very real xenophobia, antisemitism, and orientalism present in a LOT of the foundational media in vampire history! nor the racism present in modern vampire stories!!!
