Stress dreams are the friggin weirdest. Like the weirdest little things from the week get put into a blender and themed around whatever is bugging me, and if I peel back the layers it’s actually about my most intense fears.
So anyway last night I dreamed I got snowed in at a cat show and had to organize hanks of hairballs.
i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors
“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit
ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like
with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing
is it too much to ask

Cohesion within compositions/lighting
"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!

Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process
With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)

If you'd like 2 Print books that I absolutely reccomend to every visual artist regardless of Media, Color and Light and Imaginative Realism by James Gurney are basically religious texts for artists, even the 3-D people because his understanding and explanation of how light and form work is that damn good.

I've been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard
Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.
Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.
Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.
Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.
SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.
SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.
Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.
Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.
Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.
MapCrunch. Environment artists rejoice. Random locations, filter by indoor or outdoor, rural or urban, specific country. Great for realistic/authentic building ref.

It really couldn’t be simpler: infiltrate them as their trusty steward, learn their operations, and use them to my advantage in the greater plan. I am the youngest shadowhand, I can do whatever it takes. Though I must admit I should take particular care; they were unpredictable enough to not only capture and smuggle but also return a beacon—as a bargaining chip, no less—and perhaps more importantly, they do not adhere to Rosohnian social protocol. I will likely need to practice my dread “small talk” in the common tongue, and may even resort to schmoozing. Whatever it takes to keep the Mighty Nein within my control.

The first time I watched this I was NOT expecting it. I didn’t see it at all, but looking back it’s so obvious. Liam and Sam played it masterfully to set up the misconception that I fully bought into, and Travis and the others played it up to get this incredible scene, which really reset the tone in a lot of ways.
Which in turn sets up the Caleb reveal, which, no spoilers here but UGH.

Ok I’m finally watching campaign 2 of Critical Role and I kind of think it’s funny how pretty much everyone’s character is the complete opposite of their campaign one character. Like
Laura: “Last time I always had to be the responsible one and keep track of the party funds, so this time I am going to make The Most Irresponsible and childish character. Nobody’s going to be able to trust her with anything, let alone the party funds, because she’ll just draw dicks in the ledger. This time I will cause chaos on purpose.”
Travis: “Ok I’m done playing the dumb muscle/comic relief guy who can’t ever contribute any battle strategies or anything because he’s too dumb to even be able to read - this time I’m playing a high charisma caster who’ll be able to act as the party face.”
Talesin: “Last campaign I played a stuck-up noble ranged fighter who’s perpetually haunted by his past, so this time I’m gonna go for a melee fighter and -plot twist - he won’t even have a past! Also I’m going to make him as flamboyant and slutty as possible!”
Marisha: “In campaign one I was a shy, cute druid with anxiety issues, so obviously this time it’s gonna be jock butch monk with authority issues. I love beating people up and shittalking them. And to make up for the anxiety issues I’m gonna be overconfident this time!”
Ashley: “Last campaign I was a cute little cleric of the goddess of light so this campaign I’m gonna be a huge barbarian with a dark past. I’m going to be so stoic and who knows what evil things I’ve done. I will kill you with my huge anime sword!”
Sam: “Ok, joke character again, but instead of fancy hyper-competent, slutty bard guy I’m gonna go for alcoholic goblin hobo girl. And because the rogue in the last campaign was way overpowered I’m gonna make her a rogue who is so, so bad at her job.”
And then there’s Liam: “Ok sad tragic emo guy it is again, but this time I’m gonna make him a caster and he’s going to have the most fucked up backstory ever.”
I can’t wait for the anime AU to be released!!!
personal opinion but, in fandom space, ai generated works are not fan-created contents. because a soulless robot cannot be passionate about something nor can it be “a fan” of something the way human artists are
This made me think a little. Not only does generative AI prove that ideas are a dime a dozen, but it also strips the effort of bringing an idea to any state of existence. There is no reinforced, internal journey to bring an idea to fruition; happy accidents, lessons learned, difficulties overcome or sidelined for now. The only passion can be a person writing the prompt, but again the idea of that prompt is cheaper than ever.
I’m more and more in belief that AI is not artificial intelligence, but algorithmic iterations.
