Can't imagine what is must have been like for Sheila Atim though. You get cast as a major character in a popular series, except you only appear in half an episode and your lines consist entirely of breathy superslow single words and all you have to do is lie statue still on a slab, easiest and most boring job in the world—

—apart from the minutes-long run-on nonsensical monologue you're supposed to deliver in one go in a terrifying increasingly furious monotone without barely any space to breathe.

The rest of the thread is here.

tl;dr: Don’t monetize AO3, kids.  You won’t like what happens next.

read this thread. this is by far the most concise explanation of a lot of different issues that i’ve seen in fandom spaces in a while. cosigning both the linked thread and the thread about aus/uk/can law that’s linked in-thread.

AHDHXHEBSG TWITTER WRITERS DID WHAT NOW???? AND PEOPLE PAID THEM????

If someone has never taken a class that includes copyright law, they may not know this stuff, so I don’t necessarily blame random people for not knowing what copyright is, but like… maybe just maybe it’s something that should be taught????

Just another reminder, because this always drives me crazy, but even if monetizing your fic was 100% unambiguously legal and protected, AO3 would still not let you do it because AO3 was founded and is supported by people like me who want a fandom community that is completely divested from making money off of fic.

Yes, this. Lots of fanworks on AO3 are unambiguously legal. Fics based on Shakespeare plays and fairy tales and Greek mythology and The Great Gatsby and your original character from your D&D game are not violations of copyright, because no copyright applies to those things.

AO3 still doesn’t let you monetize those things on the site, because we don’t want the site to be commercial! Because that’s not what it’s for!

It’s not there for you (generic you) to make money off the efforts of the people who build and maintain the site for free! We aren’t getting paid for the work we do to give you a nice site to use, just like you aren’t getting paid for the work you do to create whatever art you share there. Because fandom is supposed to be a community where we share with each other, and therefore we all benefit.

The deal is, we give you a free, stable, safe platform to host your works. In exchange, you get a site that isn’t covered in ads and tip jars and links to gofundme and “read the next chapter at my patreon”. You get one goddamn place on the internet that isn’t trying to make money off you. And we will defend that space and keep it non-commercial.

If you want to make money off your fics, you can instead post them somewhere like royal Road. “Oh, but Royal Road’s culture is so much more negative and stressful and lacks the supportive norms of AO3!” Yeah, because people are trying to make money there. Half the userbase is treating it as a storefront and hustling is the natural social consequence of that. AO3’s culture can only exist because it’s not commercial.

Binders for sale in Europe

Hi guys, we're selling Pasi's old binders through Vinted for ease of shipping. Pasi wore these back when they were about a size 38.

Ignore the price and just bid what you can afford, telling me you come from Tumblr. I'll accept the bid.

(if you reblog make sure to check if they're not gone yet first!)

I had to put these in the "Corrective underwear for women" category but ignore that.

i love it when italians argue about italian. like we don’t even know how our language really works we just roll with it

Italian is 107 different provincial languages stuck together with spit and half a prayer

My bf lives in another region and we are constantly arguing about regional variations of words and we both live in the fucking north of Italy

one time i saw a map of italy but instead of cities and roads etc it was just covered w different ways you can say the word vagina. it was covered

oh I can think of at least seven ways to say the word vagina right off the top of my head rn. I can’t imagine what I could do if I tried harder

Wednesday WIP

Productivity, yay!

This week I have holidays at home while the kid is at camp, and even the weekend before that I'd been writing, so things are moving forwards!

For the moment I'm fully focused on TToD. I haven't forgotten about all the prompts, and I feel a bit bad about ignoring them, but I do have to pick, and having large swathes of uninterrupted time is a rarity I can't afford to spend on things that need it it.

So, I've made my way through chapter 6 and 7, once again taking the raw material I've got there and trying to weave it all together, and have started work on chapter 8.

The current method of getting all the scenes in the right order is group them by day/time period—ie if the boys are currently hiding in Italy, there's a couple of scenes that happen in day 1 when they settle in, then the next scenes are grouped together in a little folder called "day 5" and I know it needs to start with a time skip paragraph etc. It works pretty well, makes it a lot more manageable than just trying to arrange them all separately.

I've finished off for the moment with chapter 6, added some things and streamlined the plot. It's the one I was struggling with a bit, so any progress there is nice. I'm still not entirely happy with it, but it is good to have enough raw material to actually work with at a later point. There's a build-up there that I wanted to get right, and I think I'm finally approaching something workable.

And then I moved to chapter 7.

Oh boy. Chapter 7. There's an odd sort of tenderness coming through in the writing there, that isn't really present in any of the other Jim-pov chapters. I'm not even sure it works, characterisation-wise. A couple of Jim's most defining traits are his cynicism, the dominance/controlling aspect, and the sort of… hard, mocking cheerfulness? None of those are present here, he's almost soft at moments, strangely. I might be straying too far here, but I won't be able to see that until I do a larger-scale reread. In terms of the emotional arc of the whole story it's definitely a pivotal one, with a lot of new backstory coming up, the impact of the previous chapters finally hitting, and quite a few tiebacks to fif and tvd. It's Jim with most of the defenses knocked off, both of them vulnerable and trying to navigate each other and their trauma, with very mixed success. It's a bit of a heartbreaking chapter, to be honest, and I'm very curious to see how this'll land, given that there's so many of things implied, unsaid.

It's also, despite everything, a bit of a breather chapter before things really start taking off. I started on chapter 8 today and there's one really ugly scene in there, that I still need to make my way towards. It is a Ride to go from the uneasy tenderness in chapter 7 to the violence of chapter 8, and navigating that transition believably while also taking the pov switch in account is... tricky. Still, I've managed to get the scenes in line, and now I'm going to need to let it sink in a bit and Ponder to see where it still needs adding. And resist the urge to immediately jump to chapter 9

Some other random thoughts:

  • Inspiration really is everywhere. We were on holiday last week, went past a restaurant that has been for sale for over a year, I wondered huh, I wonder if you could break into that thing, and bam, Jim and Seb's next safehouse is no longer a nondescript house but the flat above an old disused restaurant. Where do you get your ideas? Just look around you.
  • I keep putting in placeholders for sex scenes that I haven't fully written out yet. At this point it's starting to be a cock sword of Damocles hanging above my head.
  • I'm waffling a bit about the locations. I dislike the idea of re-using the ones I used for Road to Corruption, but otoh I'm also running out of places that I've been, and I like adding in local colour rather than pick a generic location.
  • Related: there are some phrases in German that I've cobbled together with the aid of reverso.context/linguee and my own very basic knowledge of German. I'm aware I could ask someone to translate them for me, if only it weren't such goddamn spoilery lines. So I'll have to sit on it until a) it's published and some very kind German reader can correct it for me or b) I find someone completely uninvested to help me out.
  • I have such utter disdain for writers who can't keep their timelines straight tbh. I have this massive document with a full timeline that I keep referring back to and updating, and that's made me manage over 10 years and nearly a million words with no more than two or three inconsistencies. It's not hard, fellas, you've just got to document.
  • I have been occasionally poking at the prompts a bit, and at least two of them have got me thinking a Lot about gender stuff. And also specifically about how I write trans sex; might need to make a separate post for that soonish, to get my thoughts in order and ask for others' perspectives.

Obligatory fragment (from chapter 7):

Carefully he raises his hand, puts it on the arm resting on his waist. Warm, firm muscle, scars beneath his thumb as he strokes down. Familiar. He turns his head. Sebastian is still asleep. Lying on his good side, arm around Jim’s waist, stomach moving up and down with each slow breath. The light of dawn is falling into the room. He looks pale, Sebastian, and his face a little sunken, cheekbones too sharp. Jim turns onto his side. The arm around his waist moves along, no hitch. The past is wavering in the air like a heat hallucination, trying to break through, and he won’t let it. This hold is welcome, pleasant, anchoring. Nothing is allowed to spoil that.

I think the funniest outcome of the overwhelming success of Brand New Day would be the Frank Castle showing up in shows he absolutely would have no business being in. Not even MCU shows. Put my man in Spidey and his amazing friends.

They put fucking Venom in there, they absolutely would.

Anonymous asked:

bein nosy & returning the question - what’s YOUR fav canon jim dialogue/moments? -transmoriarty :P

I should have seen this coming, shouldn't I? Otoh now I can really appreciate what a bastard question it is, it's like making me choose between my children (luckily I only have the one real child).

Anyway:

For moments, there's actually two very minor ones I like a lot. The first one is the one in Scandal, where he gets Irene's text. You've got this whole episode full of new villains, complicated plot, in a way that you sort of forget about everything that happened with Moriarty at the start. When you get to this point, it basically feels like the puzzle is solved, the plot is done--except then you realise that there's still thirty minutes to go, and suddenly there's threatening music playing? And Irene is acting shifty and you get that slow pan up and—wham, it's your boy Moriarty in his cunty sunglasses! And I do have to give props to the show there, because that's a clever little way of showing just where Moriarty's threat value is. It's not that he's holding a gun to your head, it's that he's behind the crime, pulling the strings, even when you didn't see his presence at all. The Spider, indeed.

The other one is an even smaller blink-and-you-miss-it: the finger snap in TGG. I make a lot out of the fact that Moriarty is casually, effortlessly dominant/controlling when I write, and that little moment is sort of an illustration of that. Doesn't look back, doesn't even interrupt his conversation, just makes the smallest signal and doesn't even check because he's that sure he'll be listened to. And of course, in my happy little headcanon world putting Sebastian at the other side of that is just a kinky bonus :)

Moving on to lines:

I'm also gonna cheat and pick a couple, because, you know. They're all winners.

But special shoutout to no one ever gets to me. and no one ever will. There's the whole thing about Andrew Scott playing a Moriarty who is, underneath all the outrageousness and sadism and whimsy, deeply lonely, and sometimes it shines through. He sounds almost sad here about how no one will ever beat him, which tracks with the rooftop speech.

Other one that has been banging around my head: [I never liked riddles] Learn to. There is a theme here and it is Moriarty being a domineering bastard. The whole conversation is honestly fun powerplay, but that one line is so coldly serious that it quite stands out to me.

And finally, the dream sequence in Bride's Lie back and lose because it's so vicious. A bit like with the first quote, that thing where most of what Moriarty does is performance, and then sometimes something genuine breaks through; and this time it's fury. I mean, the whole fight is a joy, love how feral and dirty he fights, but this one particular line did stand out to me. I do love it when he goes apeshit <3

your strengths are harder to see than your weaknesses because the problems you're good at solving don't appear as problems, because you're so good at handling them before they become problems... unlike the relatively rare problem that becomes a crisis, which demands undue attention. it's sort of like a reverse survivorship bias. the problems that become noticed as problems, the moments where you notice your capacity has a gap, are only the ones that aren't cut off at the pass by your strength and capability, before they become problems. so if all you focus on is problems then all you'll see is your weaknesses. which isn't accurate
