The Organization for Transformative Works

@transformativeworks / transformativeworks.tumblr.com

The OTW is a nonprofit organization that provides access to and preserves the history of fanworks and fan cultures.

Mod Remi is off to Hacker Summer Camp*

What this means

  • The tumblr askbox is Closed until they return (as usual - AO3 Questions should go to AO3 Support, or maybe the Policy & Abuse Team depending on the issue. Questions about other OTW things should go to the OTW Contact Form)
  • The Queue will be running, and I will still be haunting the tags and replies.

If you (or someone you know) is going to be at BSidesLV or DEFCON34, hit the readmore and learn how to acquire swag!

*The OTW is not tabling at these conferences - it is just Mod Remi and their bag full of stickers and badge ribbons.

<3 Mod Remi

DAY 1 OF HACKER SUMMER CAMP!

Here are my accessories! I will be wearing these for BSidesLV AND for DEFCON34 (but I'll make another announcement when defcon starts)

Mod Remi REVEALED.

Find me at DEFCON today and get some OTW stickers! (I will likely be running around but usually return to the second floor on the left side)

Fanwork Friday: Dagon (fanzine)

Happy Fanwork Friday! We’re spotlighting the award-winning fanzine Dagon, which centered around the Cthulhu Mythos and Call of Cthulhu RPG, then broadened its scope to include other H.P. Lovecraft and weird fiction works. Over its seven-year run through the 1980s, it enjoyed contributions from several notable horror writers and Lovecraftian scholars.

According to creator Carl Ford, the first issue was made for friends, with ten copies printed in total. By the zine’s final issue, that number had grown to around 500. Regular columns included Mythos fiction recommendations, writings by Call of Cthulhu designer Sandy Peterson, and reader-suggested improvements for the RPG.

Have you read Dagon? Were you there for its run? We’d love to hear about it on Fanlore!

-----------

We value every contribution to our shared fandom history. If you’re new to editing Fanlore or wikis in general, visit our New Visitor Portal to get started or ask us questions here!

i commend your body to the stars [ get it as a print here! ]

[ID: A Project Hail Mary illustration. The artwork consists of a 5x7 grid, with smaller illustrations inside the squares. The smaller illustrations include: the xenonite Tau Ceti system; the Hail Mary drawn across three blocks; Grace’s bicycle helmet; Adrian’s green auroras; the Blip-C capsule; the crocheted Earth; the small xenonite figure; Rocky drawn across three blocks; the Petrova Line; the rainbow from Grace’s blanket; the shoreline on Erid; the Taumoeba collector; the green Skittles pack; and Astrophage as seen through a microscope. The squares differ in background colors. There are “empty” squares that reveal Grace on a red-orange background from beneath the small illustrations, only his side profile visible. He’s smiling softly. The overall artwork has an off-white background. The text above the grid reads “PROJECT HAIL MARY” and the text below it reads “LIFE IS REASON.” There are stars at each corner of the artwork. END ID]

Protip you can do this with writing too

[Image description: a two-panel comic titled “My Art Evolution”. In the first panel, labeled “Past”, a beelike person frowns at a drawing of a happy sun and says “Oh no. It isn’t perfect no one can ever see this”. In the right panel, labeled “Present”, the person holds up the same drawing, and with a sly jokester expression (which includes a nose), says “He he. Who wants to see my new eye crime”. /End description.]

Do you ever lie awake wondering how the heck Gimli knows what a nervous system is

Clearly dwarves have medical knowledge far more advanced than that of the other races.

His Majesty Dr. Gimli, son of Gloin, Neurosurgeon, M.D.

gimli trying to explain his studies to legolas, a flat-earther

#*scroll down* #*remember that middle earth is canonically flat for elves and round for everyone else* #*scroll back up & smash that reblog button"

tired: legolas took gimli to valinor with him because they were bffs/in love/etc.

wired: legolas took gimli to valinor to prove the world was flat after arguing with him about it for decades

Sorry it’s what to elves

So, in Tolkein lore, the world was originally flat, with most of the land in the middle (hence Middle Earth).  But the Numenorians (men who were rewarded with their own Atlantis-equivalent island for service in the first big war against Melkor, but eventually Power Corrupts etc) tried to invade the uttermost west which was basically Elf Heaven.  To put an end to that sort of thing, the creator of the world Bent The World and made it a sphere…but left elves able to treat it like a flat disk.  So elves can sail west and reach Elf Heaven, but a man or dwarf or hobbit who sails west will eventually wrap around to the east coast of Middle Earth.

Fanlore is currently down for unscheduled maintenance. During this time, you won't be able to read or edit Fanlore. We expect this downtime to last at least 72 hours. Thank you for your patience as we sort this out!

The OTW is Recruiting for the Board Assistants Team, Fanlore, TWC, Support, Internal Complaint and Conflict Resolution, and Volunteers & Recruiting

Are you passionate about supporting the OTW behind the scenes? Do you have an interest in preserving fannish history or want to support fan studies? Would you like to help your fellow fans use AO3? Do you have experience with mediation? We are recruiting: https://otw-news.org/55kctxsx

Update on Blocked Logins

We have temporarily lifted the block preventing users from logging in to AO3 with an insecure password. If you have been receiving this message recently, please immediately do the following:

  1. Log in to your account using your compromised password.
  2. Verify that the email on your account is one that you have access to and that it is up to date.  a. To do this, go to your Preferences page and select "Change Email" at the top of the page. Your email address will be listed on that page, next to "Current email".  b. If you don't have access to this email account, update your email before you change your password. You don't need access to your old email address to change it to a new one, as long as you also know your current password.  c. If you do have access to this email account, copy-paste the email address so that you can correctly enter it into the password reset form. If you do not enter your email address exactly as it is listed here, you will not receive the password reset email.
  3. Change your password to a unique, strong password by following the steps in our Archive FAQ: How do I change my password?  a. We strongly recommend that you use a password generator to select a new password. Most browsers and devices have a built-in password generator, or you can use this one: 1Password's Password Generator.  b. Use a password manager to set and remember your passwords for you. If you don't want to install third-party software, you can use the password manager provided by your browser or device.

If you are still unable to access your account, you will need to work with Support to complete the account recovery process described in the previous post. Please provide them with your username and the name of the email account you have lost access to. You must wait at least a week so that Support can check that the original email address is truly inactive, and provide multiple forms of evidence that the account is truly yours. The account recovery process will not proceed if you are unable to provide sufficient proof that you are the owner of the account.

forever thinking about those posts from japanese 4chan equivalent where everybody was having mealt downs about the cut pokemon, but there was this one guy saying “mr. basculin made it!” and this other replying with “y tho”

why is this so funny!!! is it the “[Good news]”, the implications that all other pokemon are extinct now, OP referring to basculin with a very polite “san” or the other guy feeling like basculin doesnt even deserve to live

[ID: A screenshot of the forum post op was talking about in the initial post. The image is low res and depicts Japanese text (translation: [Good news] Mr. Basculin, is still alive.) followed by an image of the two variants of Basculin and a response below that also in Japanese (translation: y tho). end ID]
