Today in Random Development Snapshots You Didn't Ask For:

I'm relieved I hadn't yet shared the family OCs I have for my Coltland Twins AU, because I previously had an uncle of the twins be named Brian Seavers. The thing is, today, I found out that Dolly Parton's nephew is named Brian Seaver.

Normally I wouldn't let that impact my writing, but considering why I found out about Brian Seaver existing, I decided I was better off going with a different name. Anyway, Brian was a leftover name from when the uncle was previously a very different character so it needed an update anyway.

I watched The Fall Guy purely for the Coltland Twins AU thing but i genuinely enjoyed the movie a lot. I’m gonna try to keep this spoiler free in case any other PHM fans decide to watch the movie

Something i really appreciate about The Fall Guy is that Colt Seavers is smart. He’s intelligent. He knows exactly who he is and what he can handle and his situational awareness is off the charts. Examples:

-Even though the comment he makes about “bad sand” is played off as stalling he was completely right. The sand had bad traction and it ended up costing Jody a camera.

-He immediately clocks that the drink was spiked and stops drinking it

- He is remarkably calm about being drugged and almost shrugs it off except for the damn unicorn and even then ignores it and manages to hold a completely normal conversation with Jody

- Does NOT fall for the protagonist trap of avoiding authorities he gets the police involved IMMEDIATELY it is not his fault the antagonist got to it first.

- Has the emotional maturity and intelligence to actually articulate his side of their breakup while still taking accountability and keeping it in line with the thinly veiled plot

- During the scene where he and Dan comb Ryder’s place we see him rearranging the couches, pushing one into place and pushing the other away. Later in that scene he and the guy he’s fighting fall through the glass partition down to the living room and Colt falls i to the sofa while the other guy hits the floor. He basically simulated the fight choreography in his head and calculated and planned accordingly

- After being captured and delivered the monologue he’s like you need Carbs!! Your brain runs on GLUCOSE!! I mean we love a guy who keeps track of his macros and actually knows shit about biology and nutrition

- Also learned a certain amount of French just to converse with Ryder’s dog which is adorable

- During the helicopter scene he literally keeps count of the bullets so that he knows when she’s out of them.

I’m sure there more tiny things but that’s all i remember off the top of my head

Like it would be really easy to make the stunt guy just some macho guy with a heart of gold but they made him emotionally mature and genuinely brilliant

Another thing i loved about this movie is all the fourth wall breaks that were just homages or caricatures of classic movie things like the split screen, the “it’s a product placement” car, or the “it’s plot heavy, you’ll lose the audience” but it’s all so fun and enjoyable

I put a lot of my thoughts in the comments, but I also want to say I SERIOUSLY appreciate how sensible Colt is in the movie, because just from the trailer I was struggling to understand why a former stuntman would be even sort of qualified to handle a disappearance (the one of Tom, namely). And then deal with the murder? It all just seemed a bit contrived at first, but I was willing to give it a shot.

then I realized that Colt 1000% agreed with me and repeatedly asked for the professionals to handle the situation bc holy shit is he not qualified (Ryland Grace core, ahem who said that)— and got dragged into Gail and Ryders shitshow by the metaphorical ankles (emotionally manipulated, because his forbid a guy care for the people he loves and misses and he pushed away in a period of extreme pain and shame in his life)

also when you pointed out the couch thing my jaw genuinely dropped this guy is playing 5d chess with everyone and nobody saw it coming holy shit…..

Side side note I too adore the way this movie played with tropes. Part of what made it so good was that it understood what it was and what it could be, and then ran circles around it. It’s a movie ABOUT making movies, it’s brilliant

The tl;dr of my thoughts is that usually I project my 'sterotypical' autism traits onto Ryland and my 'masked' traits onto Colt. That's not a hard rule but it's the basis of how I think of them.

Like, if Ryland gets diagnosed in childhood, Colt gets an adult diagnosis when he thinks he maybe has ADHD and gets one screening that his insurance covers not expecting to focus much on it or go further and the therapist is like 'holy autism the system has failed you'

Thinking about Colt again. He was mentioned to be a hyperactive child, and in the extended cut was said to have gotten four belts in a year in martial arts.

No clue what sort of martial arts, though??

I don't know much about martial arts or belts so I don't know whether he'd have focused in one area or end up with a mixed skillset. Anyone who does have any thoughts?

I just had a vision of an au where some of the Eridians left their planet when the petrova line showed up as a last ditch effort to save their species and find a new home. Rocky’s ship crash lands on earth when he’s young (maybe around like 30 years old?), and 12 year old Ryland and Colt are the ones who find him.

The idea is still a little half baked, but I think I’m gonna make some more comics of it just for fun lol.

COLTLAND TWINS as kids animatic | headcannon of mine is that when the twins were kids, colt would drag ryland to do stunts with him because he wants to be an action star in the future. they would record these short mini vlogs as if they’re making their own film

read too much angst about them lately, so i had to make a wholesome animatic so that i wouldn’t cry

When it comes to the twins, I like to think about how they both box themselves into one area. Colt downplays his own intelligence, Ryland his capacity for courage, just because the other twin shows that trait in a more 'recognisable' form.

It's backed by canon too. Colt is great at on the fly thinking, I mean the man literally faked his death and then snuck back onto a high profile set. He needed to be drugged on Day 1 to nerf him. He knows how to push Ryder's buttons, he knows the importance of the ground material when driving to where a quick sand analysis shows how everything can go, he does plenty of his own safety checks, he holds so many quotes and bits of movie trivia in his head. But he considers himself the background guy to take hits, and he feels so inadequate in his own identity compared to how he thinks about, say, Jody (who is very smart in her own ways that are more easily recognised by others).

Ryland is obviously very brave when it matters in his movie, but also, a complete coward wouldn't stand by his views even when it got him fired from academia and call someone well respected a staggering waste of carbon. A complete coward wouldn't return to the same lab where he was proven wrong again and argue with a woman who had the power to get him kidnapped to continue his studies instead of returning to his ordinary life (even if that's what he thought earlier would be better). He was always capable of some bravery; it's just he had a line where it wasn't worth it for him because he hadn't yet found a reason to be braver than that and used his past failures as a way to excuse and comfort himself.

I think this could tie in well with the two of them here too. If they've been shelved from an early age into being the brave one and the smart one, it's all the harder to climb out of. Siblings, and twins especially in a way to differentiate them, often end up like this through a mixture of having the other person to handle what they struggle with and from external pressure to seem different.

Two small Jody headcanons, based partly on what I've heard about her show counterpart:

  1. Jody has trained before in some combat, potentially partly with Colt. We know she can fight, we know she's pretty fit as she also took up pilates, and her TV show counterpart is also a stuntwoman. Regardless of if Jody's ever stunted or acted, I think it would be cool to shout that out. And considering the extended cut said that Colt is well trained in martial arts from a kid, it could be it's something they have in common that helps them bond.
  2. Jody's birth surname isn't Moreno. Her TV counterpart is Jody Banks, and I find it interesting it changed considering Colt remains a Seavers in both. I'm now headcanoning that Moreno is Jody's mother's maiden name and that her mum and mum's family is European Spanish (while her dad is English and they were raised in England). She thought Moreno had a better ring to it than Banks, wanted to be more distinct, and also thinks it's antiquated for kids to take their father's surname so she changed upon moving to the States. Another thing she can have in common with Colt too in my Coltland AU-

Twins thought:

Colt did Miami Vice three shows a day, six days a week for three years (implying a live show). He said it was the 'first show' he ever did too, which makes me wonder if he did other live shows. Meaning he's not only been on screen.

Meaning I'm certain he's a theatre kid. Sure, he got discovered jumping off a roof by a local stuntman if we go by the extended cut, but come on. He's so theatre kid.

Imagine him in like high school or something and he has a show to do but on that one day he happens to be sick or hurt or in detention or something - so he calls in Ryland, who he forced to help him with rehearsals. Ryland's all like 'I'm not an actor!' and Colt's like 'you present in front of the class all the time in science this isn't any different!'

Meanwhile, Colt's actual understudy is right there ready to fill in-

there's so many things I want to write but for some reason the one in vivid detail is a pregnancy fic for Colt and Jody mostly in Jody's POV but also exploring Coltland twin esq angst, plenty of fluff, mobility aid using Colt and them having quietly married and moved to England (which actually mirrors Gosling irl. The England part. And potentially the marriage but Eva Mendes says they 'like to keep it mysterious'. Go girl!)

but it's like nobody would read it, right? It'd be too niche or something. Not PHM enough, but PHM enough to put off regular fall guy readers

Thinking more on Colt Seavers (Fall Guy) because there's no way he's okay after his movie. Even beforehand. He was running on pain pills, adrenaline and his simp heart and FUCKING CRASHED after I'm certain of it.

But I had this idea where afterwards, when he's definitely all battered and not doing another movie anytime soon if ever, he starts a YouTube channel.

It begins as like a reaction series, where he goes over clips from movies as well as social media videos of people doing dumb shit. Bringing in his own experience both as a professional stuntsman and as someone who's taken a lot of hits in his day. Explaining the risks and training you take, how often you might need to repeat a stunt, which things are easier or harder than they look, the importance of stunt co-ordinators (shout out to Dan he can guest star), that sort of thing.

As he establishes he expands the content a little. Q&As, sharing his own set stories, bringing on other people to interview or react with him. When he's eventually more comfortable he'll also talk more about his disability and do things like product reviews for physical therapy and wheelchair users (ambulatory wheelchair user Colt my beloved). Maybe a couple serious mental health ones or calls for sets to be better regulated. At some milestone (maybe a million subscribers) and once he gets lawyer clearance he'll tell the story of the movie's events too.

I have this strong visual of an early video where he goes OFF with complicated feelings on Jackass because they were inspiring to him but in hindsight the lack of professionalism is infuriating, and then like years later interviewing Johnny Knoxville and his commenters finding it hilarious.

And whenever his lovely wife is working on a new film he'll give her all the shoutouts. He gushes about her whenever he can. To the point where it's a part of his persona. And that gives him a Fucking Scare because a lot of 'wife guys' online actually turn out to be performative about it and either cheat on them or hurt them and he's scared he'll be like that even though it's all genuine.

On the one hand, part of what I find so impactful about Project Hail Mary (and The Martian as well) is that our protagonist wants to survive on his own rights. Not for a child or wife back home, for himself. And his life has value. Sure, he turns back for Rocky knowing he may die, but he still wants to live. It's just he wants to save Rocky and Erid more than that. The courage that takes, it felt real. I appreciated it heaps for that.

On the other hand, though...Colt is so twins with him and I love that angst.

It's a funny balance to maintain.

Okay, I got bitten by the Project Hail Mary bug. And again by the Coltland Twins AU bug (the one where Ryland is the identical twin of Colt Seavers, the protagonist of The Fall Guy). I could natter forever about my thoughts on this but many people have more eloquently.

So instead, my original contribution (with help from my friend pewpewkitty on Insta, who I commissioned) is this little guy. Because I can't resist making fankids, but don't ship Grace with anyone.

Don't worry if you don't know The Fall Guy because his character and story is very strongly shaped by Project Hail Mary's world as they deal with the fading sun while waiting for a miracle.
