why be radically exclusionary abt queerness when you could be radically inclusionary instead. let's inflate the numbers. let's become the majority. the sky's the limit

"we can't let just ANYONE call themselves queer!!" what are you talking about. I'm steepling my fingers and gleefully cackling every time we Get Another One and you should be too. lock in.

Fuck yeah, let's make this little raft we're surviving on big as hell. If I bring my bit of driftwood and you bring yours and we let as many people join in as want to, we might end up with a functional boat.

I heard someone say 'queer is that which accepts queerness' a few weeks ago and I've been thinking about it ever since.

Back when I was active on AVEN (I have no idea what it's like now), we had two definitions of asexual -- an external definition and an internal definition. The external definition, the one that's on the wiki and the press material and that everyone uses when talking about asexuality, was of course "an asexual is someone who does not experience sexual attraction". The internal definition, the one we kept in mind when talking to each other, was "an asexual is someone who calls themself asexual".

The reason for this was very simple and very practical. In the very early AVEN and immediately pre-AVEN days, back before my time when the disparate ace communities were first finding each other and creating a public online network, there was a fair lot of exclusionist discourse. There are a lot of ways to be asexual, and the early community of course fell prey to the usual infighting about whether someone with a libido counts as asexual, whether someone who chooses to have sex can be asexual (usual tiring Purity Brigade Bullshit), whether someone without a libido counts as asexual (after all, if you have no sex drive, are you sure it's a matter of sexual orientation?), whether ace people count as lgbtq, all the usual nonsense. This worked out the way it pretty much always does -- the inclusionists "win", because exclusionists always break off into smaller and smaller communities so the largest group is, of course, the one where all different kinds of people stick together and welcome each other. And that was AVEN.

And when you're trying to have a strong community and somebody shows up at the gates saying, "hi, I think I'm asexual", it's a fucking horrible idea to start doubting their credentials. They saw the public definition and started calling themselves asexual; they're here, and now they're under the internal definition. An asexual is somebody who calls themself asexual. Sometimes, these people would be frustrated allosexuals, or people choosing to swear off sex, who might not fit the external definition of the term. We made sure that everyone knew the external definition, and there were always conversations about asexuality and how it affected our lives, if they asked us directly what we thought then we'd say "only you can know for sure" and then give our thoughts on the matter for as long as they asked for them, and other than that it wasn't anyone else's fucking business or anyone's place to judge. If people weren't nasty and didn't create problems, they could stay and call themselves whatever they wanted.

Many of these people who didn't fit the strict definition eventually left after receiving support and discovering more about themselves. Some stopped IDing as ace but became allies to the community. Some people who came in with the most "I'm a heterosexual girl who is angry at my boyfriend" intro posts you've ever seen in your life discovered that they were in fact ace and that the messages that society had taught them about sex and romance were simply not for them -- these are people who, in a gatekept community, would have been incorrectly ousted immediately.

And then there were people -- a LOT of people -- who found themselves in grey areas. People who said "okay, this community makes sense to me and is useful to me and I have so much in common with a lot of you, but not EXACTLY like you. However, what I experience may not be the strict default definition but it's an awful lot like these other members on the forum." And they formed sub-communities. The grey aces. The demisexuals. The aromantics and greyromantics. Through these dialogues, between subgroups who in a more exclusionary community would be arguing about who the "real" asexuals are and splintering off into their own communities away from all those stupid cishet fakers, we developed language to describe our similarities and differences. The sexual/romantic/aesthetic attraction model came out of these dialogues and it became so massively important to our understanding of asexuality that basically everyone in the ace/aro community describes themselves by it, as do a large number of people outside the community. The community made massive leaps ahead in just a decade or two by, well, being a community. By being a place where anybody who called the place home, and didn't bully other people in the home, was right. By being somewhere where anybody who saw "asexual: someone who doesn't experience sexual attraction" and thought "that sounds like a term with some use for me" was allowed to use it.

An asexual is somebody who does not experience sexual attraction.

An asexual is somebody who calls themselves asexual.

These definitions are not in conflict -- they are both, in concert, fundamentally necessary for a safe and vibrant community where we can protect, support, and learn about each other and ourselves.

And that is absolutely not exclusive to asexual communities.

I absolutely love when people fall on swords for the bit. Joel Smallishbeans is such a good example of it too.

He puffs himself up all annoyed and outraged and says "Of course I wouldn't fall for that obvious trap! You're stupid! I'm not stupid!" And then immediately goes off and does it because the rule of the bit says that's the funniest outcome and he has to do it no matter how much it inconveniences him I can't get over he perfectly follows that formula in the latest EGG saga to the most extreme comedic way possible. EGG invites him and Cleo over to their secret base with a proposal: They'll prank someone for them for 1000 diamonds. This is an absurd offer, one that they never intended to have anyone actually take them up on. Joel even laughs in disbelief at it how few diamonds he has in comparison and Etho helpfully points out that Scar runs a bank. Immediately you see the gears turning in Joel's head that now he has to figure out a way to do it once he realizes that it is possible. He sees the invisible thread of the bit and he has to follow it.

Then Grian pulls the trigger for the actual reason Cleo and Joel were invited over because who would pay them 1000 diamonds for a prank? This whole meeting was just a setup to get Joel and/or Cleo into position to launch them thousands of blocks into the sky with windcharges again. And because of Joel's hilarious luck and the world loving to watch him suffer, he's the only one who gets launched and he's pissed because he's already done this before and it's so annoying to him. He comes back and makes a whole show of letting them know how annoyed and mad he was and even half-heartedly threatens to blow the place up just to play it up. He asks how to leave and Grian attempts to trick him into launching him again but Joel manages to weasel out of it and they all laugh it off and Joel goes on his way. They got a funny Joel reaction, prank completed. Except Joel can't stop thinking about the thread of the bit. It's there and he can see it and it's calling him. He can't just let it go unanswered.

He immediately returns back to clarify that EGG would prank False for him for 1000 diamonds. With confirmation and encouragement that yes, the bit is still alive and well, Joel immediately goes to get a loan from Scar. And to the shock of everyone he comes back 20 minutes later with 1000 diamonds. Grian openly admits he didn't think anyone would do it. Then Joel admits that he has 15% interest on the loan and you can hear it in his voice that he's only now starting to comprehend just how bad of a financial idea that was. Of course now he's in too deep and he's at risk of regretting committing to this so he starts playing up how much he wants False to suffer and how serious he is about this because holy shit he just gave them one thousand diamonds on impulse for a bit and it's just hitting him. He's going to have to do so much mining to pay off that debt. And then he realizes that if he doesn't pay it off within a month, he agreed to give up his base???? I think him saying all of that out loud made him realize he yes-anded too close to the sun and oh god what has he done???? No one asked him to do this but he saw the bit and he just couldn't let it go. There was a sword to fall on by god he had to do it! He just had to! Now he has to worry about the bank owning his base if he doesn't come into possession of 1150 diamonds by the end of the month. I love Joel so fucking much

The Australian Ballet is doing Alice in Wonderland again and on one hand I’ve seen it before, and on the other, their Queen of Hearts has my favourite costume in anything every

It’s just this and her court pushes her around the stage on wheels and every act it gets taller until she towers over everyone

Also in act 3 (I think) it swings open at the front and her husband is sitting inside reading a newspaper

I saw this again on Tuesday so here are some things I’d forgotten about:

  • This is the only Alice adaptation I’ve ever seen that doesn’t cut the caucus race
  • The mad hatter wears taps throughout and it’s so jarring and surprising it’s perfect
  • The executioner shadows almost everyone who dances with the Queen
  • Lewis Carroll is a character in the ballet and becomes the white rabbit who leads Alice into wonderland which is bad and wrong because Carroll is the dodo but does work very well
  • They started dropping rose petals from the ceiling onto the audience when Alice looked through the door to the garden and it was utterly magic
  • The Cheshire Cat is made of about 10 different puppets that dance around the stage
  • Which reminds me Alice is styled after Alice Liddell rather than the John Tenniel illustrations
  • I don’t think the king of hearts actually dances he just wanders around looking confused

here’s a video

more. (btw this is a parody/reference to the very famous “rose adagio” from sleeping beauty)

the Caterpillar is pretty neat too

(all of these videos are from the Royal Ballet’s productions in 2014 and 2017)

Very fascinated by this Walmart shirt. Could they not use the actual phrase or something? It's not even specifying "when you're mean to me" it's just when you're mean in general this particular bunny gets hurt. She carries all suffering. This bunny experiences all evil in the world.

Omg I can't 🤣

Is Dan aware of this mystery man??? He is either dying of laughter or ready to shout from the roof tops that Phil is his only man so the gossip articles need to zip it

for those wondering what this is actually about, unpaywalled article here

However, I can reveal that those who have been involved in organising the tour believe the couple are keeping a secret from their millions of fans. I’m told that Dan has formed a close friendship with another man who will be joining them on the tour, though sources say he will remain firmly behind the scenes. Multiple sources close to the influencers have contacted me claiming they have been aware of his existence for the last four years and they ask why he has never been mentioned in any of their videos. ‘It’s really bewildering that they don’t mention this man in anything they do,’ says my source. ‘They have been planning this massive podcast tour and Dan’s “friend” is due to go. You have to wonder how he must feel, he’s so supportive to Dan and Phil. To some the pair come across like business partners stuck in a job who have to tolerate each other until the next windfall comes. ‘When they announced they were together, Phil’s channel views were falling and Dan’s tour hadn’t performed as well as expected. They’re about to head off on another world tour where the whole thing is built around Dan and Phil being “soulmates” and they have relentlessly pushed their “couple” merchandise, which has been criticised for being shoddy by those involved in their projects.’ [...]
However, despite ‘breaking the internet’ with their revelation, some fans have questioned whether Dan and Phil have ever actually been together. There is wide speculation amongst their following that the pair realised that being in a relationship would help revive their brand. Some eagle-eyed followers have noticed that despite being in a ‘relationship’, they at times appear to slip up and call one another ‘mate’ or ‘friend.’ My source says: ‘The pair of them love money and nice things and they are making around £20,000 per week at the moment just from YouTube, which since their announcement, has been couple content. ‘There is a view that they scoured all of the fan pages and went with whatever the fans are saying. The team around them couldn’t believe it when Dan and Phil did the video announcing their relationship but I guess it makes sense, it generates cash.’ Dan and Phil’s story stretches back to 2009. Phil, who grew up in Rawtenstall, Lancashire, had already built a successful YouTube following after launching his AmazingPhil channel in 2006. Dan discovered his videos, became a fan and eventually contacted him online.
Videos titled ‘How We Really Feel About Weddings’ and ‘Will Phil Propose To Dan?’ and ‘Our First Christmas As A Couple’ are just a few that the pair have released since their announcement – all of which have racked up around 400,000 views each. Very few internet creators have enjoyed such a level of success as this pair have achieved and yet those familiar with the inner workings of Brand Dan and Phil tell me that at times they have been surprised that they are not quite as jovial and wholesome behind the scenes. In fact, one claims to have witnessed the pair ‘make sly digs’ at their fans which they have found ‘difficult’. Now, as they prepare to embark on that sold-out worldwide tour, built entirely around their love story, questions persist. Will one of the internet's most talked about couples confirm their romance, or has this pairings become more about their brand than love? Dan and Phil have been approached for comment.

interesting to hear of this "wide speculation" amongst fans, something i have literally never seen on tumblr, The Phan Website. regardless, i'd expect nothing less from the Daily Mail

You wake up one morning, and feel something is off. Your pillow smells strangely sweet. You’re still groggy with sleep, and try to hug your pillow closer. A piece of it simply breaks in your hand. It is made of chocolate.

You try to pull the blanket off of yourself, and you realize that, it too, is made of chocolate. You try to shake it off, and step out of bed. Your carpet feels strangely spongy. You look down, only to realize it’s actually cake. Lovingly baked, and smelling of sweet fruit. You grab a piece, and cautiously take a bite. It is one of the most delicious cakes you have ever eaten.

You get up, confused, and exit your room to see if the rest of your house is like this. The door handle melts in your hand as you hold onto it, and covers it with dark chocolate carefully painted gold. The rest of the carpet on the floor is still cake, the guardrails on the stairs leading down are tempered chocolate, the tiles on the floor are the same, the windows are sugar glass, everything is edible.

You run outside, knocking over the lovingly crafted chocolate front door in a panic.

You realize, in horror, that your house was not an exception. The bushes, the grass, the asphalt on the road, the trees, birds, the world itself, is chocolate.

Somewhere, not too far away, stands a man. Amaury fucking Guichon.
