It weeps (Es weint) by Paul Klee, 1939
Can I be honest. I think the world may have had enough of American poets writing pieces about how it's weird to go about daily life while your government commits genocide abroad. I don't know if anyone needs to do another one of those
in all fairness it really is a bizarre/depressing/powerless feeling and it's not weird to explore that through art. But at some point it really just starts to feel like navel gazing. Like are these really the experiences and viewpoints we need to be centering right now
anyone wanna open a store or something?
my idea for this store is we have 3 big fridges for gatorade and i sell them at one cent cheaper than the 7-11 across the street. this is the biggest draw and i have banners outside proclaiming my gatorade is cheaper. i make no other renovations to the interior of the building.
other features include a couple of foldable tables and chairs, a box of jenga thatβs missing pieces, and 37 national geographic magazines from the 1990s. all free to use at your leisure.
you can smoke in here, but only with the cigarettes iβve bummed from strangers elsewhere and only using lighters iβve found on the ground. inventory is extremely limited.
i do sell coffee for $2 a cup, but itβs just keurig pods. if you bring your own keurig pod, itβs a quarter.
there will be a rack of old t-shirts from my closet that i canβt wear anymore. these will be sold on a βname-your-priceβ basis, but if i can tell youβre rich, theyβre $50 apiece.
iβll be there in a lawn chair reading the odyssey or otherwise brushing up on my greek mythology narratives, but you canβt ask me about anything in the text because i wonβt remember.
there will be a coffee can on the ground next to me with a note that reads βadvice $5.β i will provide a disclaimer that i cannot attest to the quality of the advice or the level of my own intelligence but only after you put a fiver in the can. ask your question and follow the advice at your own peril.
on friday nights, there will be a cover charge of $10, and i will affix a disco ball to the ceiling with duct tape and play grouperβs seminal 2008 album dragging a dead deer up a hill from my phone.
posted hours are 2 pm to 12 am, but these are merely ceremonial. the store will be open whenever i feel like it.
bathroom is free to use for customer and non-customer alike.
i just did ~50 ugly drawings one dollar & these were some of my faves. but donβt worry there are some really ugly ones in there too
my least favorite uglies that i almost feel ashamed to send but MUST in the spirit of the assignment & all my requests (deaths head moth, yugioh, guinea pig, cat, fruit/bug, cobra on wheels with fire trail which i didnβt leave enough room for fire on)
itβs hard being a nuance believer because sometimes youβll be talking about something which in your mind is sure to be so and then you have to be like βunless of course a series of circumstances occurs that changes everything. in which case who can say.β like ok mr βanything can happenβ you have anything to say other than βanything can happenβ? no?
I can't keep having the same conversations about love languages, mbti, iq, bmi, "brain fully formed at 25" and shit over and over again...
these things exist on a spectrum from untrue to straightforwardly racist btw. so if we could retire them forever that'd be nice.
βLove Languagesβ are just common couples therapy techniques mangled and repackaged by an unqualified homophobe. Relationships generally need all 5 love languages to be fulfilled, which is to say, everybody needs to communicate with, spend time with, and do things for their partners, and thatβs got nothing to do with any special way you communicate affection.
MBTI has been proven completely ineffective at predicting anyoneβs success at a particular job, and half the people who take it twice will get different results. Reputable psychologists do not recognize it, and the company that owns the rights to it uses it to scam people. People donβt adhere to strict binaries in basically anything. Very few people are going to be exclusively introverted or extroverted. Itβs just astrology repackaged as pseudoscience. Shockingly enough, you canβt boil the complexity of the human experience down to a dozen Types of Guy.
BMI was developed by a man known as the grandfather of eugenics, who first of all was a mathematician, not a doctor, and second never intended the formula to be used to categorize individuals. Itβs intended to give a rough estimate of obesity in populations, and itβs not even good at that. It hangs around because of fatphobia and insurance companies who want it as an excuse to charge fat people more.
The study which determined peopleβs prefrontal cortex was still developing at 25β¦ stopped measuring at 25. Evidence suggests your brain probably never stops developing. Stop infantilizing grown adults. This is a branch off from the larger mess of misinformation surrounding fMRIs.
If you havenβt put together what all these things have in common yet, hereβs the moral of the story: STOP TRYING TO CATEGORIZE PEOPLE. STOP TRYING TO PUT PEOPLE IN A GODDAMN BIOLOGICAL HIERARCHY. EUGENICS IS BAD, AND WILL ALWAYS BE BAD, NO MATTER WHOβS DOING IT.
This was something we read about in my undergrad teacher prep program because it is such a prevalent myth, and it encourages people to think of people as having these psychologically and biologically essentialist, immutable traits-- that everyone can be sorted and categorized, that those categories tell you something about them (and it's therefore safe or even a good practice to make certain assumptions about them), and that those categories are predetermined and inflexible.
Even a less rigid/extreme belief in these ideas is harmful; teachers in particular waste a lot of time teaching some kids in the particular ways they've been determined to need, rather than just teaching in a variety of ways to all of their students, all of whom likely benefit from having all of those options available. And again, thinking of people as categorizable like this just encourages folks to make assumptions about one another.
art by LILAH i found laying around in the children's area of the bjork exhibit that was so awesome that i almost stole it and took it home with me but i didn't because i thought there was a slim possibility that if i left it there someone would be able to show it to bjork & if i were the subject of this drawing it would make me shriek with delight
you have to consciously unlearn racism and continue to watch for it because it will come out without realizing. because so much of society is structured around it. shrugging and going "i dont care" or "i dont know how else to say it" means you are okay with being racist and hurting other people with how much you dont give a shit about them.
I think if I heard I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas in the correct circumstances it could move me to tears. It's like the promise of a brighter future that never came to pass
a little girl came up to me when I was working on my mural & she said βdid you color this?β and I said βyeah!β and she was like βwooowβ¦ Iβve never see a girl color beforeβ
I donβt think thatβs actually what she meant but I feel like a superhero. nevertheless she persisted. women in male-dominated fields (coloring)
girls can do anything actually, even color π«΅πͺπ«‘
btw, my last day at the library is next Friday, so I have officially laid the last piece in here today! All thatβs left is for me to seal it up
Because it is!
recent doodles of animals I've never drawn before
