My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
My first teaching job, the librarian at the middle school didn't have much control over purchasing. Because we included an 8th grade, we got a lot of John Grisham and the like, since they were aimed at that reading level.

seriously, teenagers are the absolute hardest group to engage at most libraries & we'll often organize programs that absolutely no one will show up to & it sucks. if you go up to a public librarian & say "hey, some friends & i want to do this thing. does that sound like a feasible teen program for the library?" most people will move heaven & earth to pull it off for you because we know there's an interest in our community. we will go balls to the freaking wall to make it happen
do you want a cosplay contest? a video game tournament? a free escape room? bring it up to the library. it's not a burden or an annoyance at all. it'll be like christmas came early for us

If you come to my library, say you want a place for your friends to play D&D every week, I will PERSONALLY call every single HOA on our schedule to tell them that the meeting room is unavailable on Tuesday nights for the foreseeable future. You can have the room from 6-8, and I bet I can talk the teen librarian into letting us start earlier if we count as part of her program.

We know how it will end. But she would be a fantastic character from the lore to build a series around.
Agreed, but I think a lot of people would struggle to get past the knowing how it would end.
Also casting is a problem with the original actors so aged- a lot of fans wouldn't accept a recast, especially for Spike.
Fan expectations create so many creative barriers.

While science rightly does not care about what is cool, only what's true, I feel obliged to note two things here:
First, that birds can be, in fact, extremely frightening.
And second, that IIRC pretty much all scientists who study them know that rexes were good hunters, as well as scavengers (most animals are both). "T-rexes could only scavenge" is palaeontological click-bait and should be rightly ignored.

The rise in antisemitism in the last few years is awful. I wish I could do more about it.
I'm not Jewish. I say that because unfortunately it feels like that needs to be clarified - and not in a "so I can't speak directly to the impact of this because it's not my story so you should listen to those who are being affected" (that's still true and you should do it) but because part of the antisemitism is dismissing Jewish people when they bring it up.
And I imagine this post will get me a lot of messages/responses about freeing Palestine - and I agree, lots of horrible things are happening to Palestinians. But this post is about the horrible things that are happening to Jewish people.
I'm Canadian. The things I read about antisemitic hate crimes have nothing to do with helping Palestinians. How does damaging property in Canada or attacking a person in Canada help?
I don't want to hear about the mental gymnastics or outright hateful logic you use to make it ok to attack a marginalized community. Instead, just go head and block me. Stop following. We don't need to interact with each other.
The harm that is being done toward Jewish communities and individuals over the world is heartbreaking. The lack of support/outrage/solidarity that is being shown to those individuals and communities is shameful for the rest of us. Call it out. Stand up. Correct information that is harmful. Listen and read and learn and try to understand instead of scratching your head and finding reasons for why this kind of aggression and discrimination is ok actually.
And if you're Jewish and reading this - hi, welcome. I don't know enough and I'll probably miss some things as I'm still learning, but I hope following me can be safe for you.
Every synagogue, every Jewish Family Center, every shop or property openly owned by Jews, every Jew themselves, is treated like they are an Israeli embassy staffed entirely by Likud and IDF volunteers... like they are direct representations of Israel's government themselves, and therefore valid targets.
It is a terrorist mindset. It is the mindset of people who target kids and concert goers when their ostensible enemy is a government and its soldiers. It is an action... a whole CONSTELLATION of actions... that mark their words as lies.
There's many arguments you can rightfully have with the government of Israel. You might even disagree with the existence of Israel itself. But attacking random Jews, and saying you are doing it because you support Palestinians?
You're lying, because your actions do nothing to support Palestinians, and do everything to support terrorism against Jews.
