------HEY HOWDY------

I'm Jade (She/They), and I take photos and videos of arthropods (insects, arachnids, crustaceans, myriapods, and related species) both out of interest and for the sake of sharing, documentation, and information!

All creatures in my photos and videos were found out in the free open of Mississippi, as that's where I live, and are returned to the wild safely if handled, unless otherwise stated!

Observations seen here can also be found on iNaturalist under the same username, jupiterswasphouse! (The backlog is still in the process of being added at the time of this update)

⚠️ Photos and videos taken by me should, preferably, not be reuploaded directly or used to train a generative AI without my express permission, however, they may generally be used under the same rules as a standard CC BY-SA 4.0 Attribution-Sharealike license, that being that they may be used in your own works provided that the used photos and/or videos come with proper credit to "jupiterswasphouse" or "Jupiter's Wasp House" (For questions regarding the use and distribution of my media, feel free to message me or direct the questions to my ask box)

Blog specific tags include: 'Wasp House Buzzing' (Text only posts), 'Wasp House Sights' (Photos and Videos), 'Wasp House Answers' (Asks), 'Wasp House Art' (Art), 'Wasp House Review' (Reviews), 'WHR: Wasp Review' (Wasp Reviews specifically) and 'Not Wasp House Related' (General posts that aren't related to arthropods, such as reblogs for particular causes or text posts that just happen to be unrelated)

Asks: Currently always open!

[VIDEO TAKEN: JUNE 7TH, 2026 | Video ID: A video of a swarm of hybridized fire ants, many winged alates present, crawling all across a rusted metal structure and some cinder blocks, a couple ants taking off in flight. As the video goes on, the sound of rain hitting metal gets more audible. /End ID.]

Saw these hybridized imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta x richteri) taking off for a mating swarm, had to squat down and get a video! Unfortunately nature wasn't having it, as you can hear.

How do you define whether a creature counts as a bug? Is it a matter of size, shape, taxonomy, vibes, or some other option I may have overlooked? To explain what I mean:

Bug is defined by size - all small critters, from true insects, arachnids and annelids, millipedes and centipedes are all bugs

Bug is defined by shape - a bug is an invertebrate with at least six legs

Bug is defined by taxonomy - only true bugs, of the class insecta and order hemiptera, are bugs

Bug is defined by vibes - any creature that's sufficiently small and skitters in an insect-like fashion is a bug. Your auntie's ancient beady-eyed lapdog counts as a bug.

Today's wasp of the day is Odontophotopsis exogyra!

Your first clue that this is a nocturnal wasp should be those eyes. And I'm not just talking about the shiny black beads on either side of its head, check out those forehead globes too! Ocelli are "simple eyes" in that they really just detect light/shadows and are believed to help with spacial orientation. For the ocelli to be so prominent and globelike tells you right away that this wasp is highly attuned to navigating the world through very subtle light.

Some nocturnal insects are capable of detecting the dim light emitted from stars and will use that to help with navigation
