I'm sorry but I have to agree with that anon 😭, in the words of spiderman "With great power comes great responsibility" and in this case it's with great talent comes great responsibility. You're an EXCEPTIONAL writer, truly amazing, but as someone who's been reading fanfics since I was 10, writers who do not decide to update their follwers, or even post on time show show they're not passionate and have no drive.

Yes you want to share your talent with the world and that's amazing, but because you do that, you are also sharing it to the public, who have expectations cause you're not just doing this for yourself anymore.

I think you meant this kindly but it came across as very rude.

I work full time. I go to university. I have passion and drive, I just also have a life outside my computer. I write full time, im writing my own novel right now, or trying to at least. I have a lot of responsibilities and my own personal struggles.

Maybe you didnt mean to be rude, and if you are trying to be kind I appreciate it, but it didnt come across that way

IM SORRY BUT UHGGHH THIS IS PMOO.

the whole “with great talent comes great responsibility” thing DONT EVEN MAKE SENSEEE.

being good at writing doesn’t magically sign you into some invisible contract where you owe strangers free content forever. talent isn’t a subscription service?? you owe your talent to NO ONE. nobody looks at someone who’s amazing at painting and says “well, you’re responsible for giving me a new painting every week!!!!” nobody tells musicians they’re morally obligated to upload songs because people liked the last one. like frank ocean, he uploads whenever he wants to because its his talent and he decides when to make use of it. so why do literal fanfic writers get treated like they suddenly have a job they never applied for?

fanfiction is a HOBBY. it’s something people do in their free time because they enjoy it, unlike some painters and most musicians we don't even get paid y'all. we dont get any benefits. the second people start acting like updates are something they’re entitled to, it stops being a hobby and starts feeling like unpaid labor. that’s the fastest way to kill someone’s motivation btw

and no, readers investing time in a fic doesn’t mean the author owes them an ending. reading was your choice. posting was the writer’s choice. neither creates a debt. you got to enjoy however many chapters were already there for free. that’s already more than the writer ever had to give you.

people also forget that writers are actual human beings. they get busy. they lose interest in a fandom. they fall out of love with a story. they get sick. they start school, work, relationships, or just don’t have the energy anymore. sometimes they simply don’t want to continue. “i don’t feel like writing this anymore” is a complete sentence. they don’t need a tragedy or a dramatic explanation to justify stopping.

the weirdest part is how people act like talent creates obligation?? it doesn’t. being talented only means you’re good at something. it doesn’t erase your autonomy. you don’t lose the right to say “i’m done.”

if anything, this mindset hurts fandom. guilt-tripping writers into updating doesn’t make them write faster. it makes writing feel like a chore. creativity isn’t something you can bully out of someone. the more pressure people put on authors, the less likely they are to enjoy creating anything at all.

at the end of the day, writers don’t owe anyone updates. they don’t owe completion. they don’t owe explanations. they shared something they made because they wanted to. if they stop wanting to, that’s the end of it. you can be disappointed. that’s completely fair. but disappointment doesn’t turn into entitlement so im sorry to word it like this but stop acting so entitled omg

because talent comes with opportunity, not responsibility to entertain strangers for free.

My goat 🐐

i got your back… from like halfway across the world 🥹✌️

I aslo really liked the cliffhanger you added , amazing chapter as always 💙

The obsession Nightwing fic gave me chills , I'm not even that big of a fan of Nightwing but it was so damn good !

Have u seen the zombie stage video? Mizi looked so cute in it , though it lowkey made me so sad at the end.

✨️-anon

HII!! tyyy 💕 surprisingly the nightwing fanfic was rather written quickly and on a whim so im glad you liked it lol.

as for the zombie stage video, YESS I HAVE BROOO. ts was so peak and i really like the concept. im also so glad we got to see more of sua and her personality in the mv instead of only being able to see it portrayed in the comics. sadly in alien stage mv there was not a lot sua content *sigh*

you knew the heat would kill the tomatoes before august, but you kept hauling the water buckets anyway.

that was just how life was.

for you, at least. not for those snobby rich folk down the road that didn’t have to worry ‘bout money a day in their life.

you suppose, life on the perimeter of the territory didn’t leave room for whole lot of laziness. you were the oldest, so while your pa was out sweating over a herd of cattle the bank technically owned (albeit the man kept insisting it wasn't actually like that - you just sighed and gave him the benefit of doubt), and your ma was trying to keep the toddlers from swallowing dirt, you did the heavy lifting. you hadn’t got no brother to take up the hard and dirty work to let you leisure and dally around - to keep you real sweet and unhardened by the world and maybe a little naive to the ways of life like most men would want their daughters to be.

naively happy. innocently happy.

your knuckles seemed to be permanently stained gray from scrubbing denim on the washboard and your back more often than not ached by noon.

it was a dull, predictable kind of tired, but it was yours. you loved your family enough to bear with it.

but the dust kicked up on the horizon.

they came for you in the middle of the day. whole lot of shameless bastards they are - better men would at least wait for nightfall, would at least try and hide their intentions behind the cloak of darkness and come during the blind man's hour. not them though. they kicked the door in when your family was just about ready to eat lunch, the food still steaming and your sweet ma still in her apron.

poor little you didn’t even have time to let out a yelp.

oh god, pa. get up, please get up.

one outlaw smashed his rifle butt into your pa's temple and your old man was out like a light, still clutching the knife he'd grabbed to defend you in a poor, desperate attempt. two others grabbed your mother and shoved her into the pantry, blocking the door with a tipped over cupboard.

you ran to get your siblings and then the sheriff - or tried to at least. they were crowded into your kitchen, laughing as you turned from one to the other.

"no way out, lady."

"too late to run now, shoulda started before we even got here if you wanted to get away."

"look at her all scared. well ain't it just adorable?"

with near identical duster coats and bandanas tied across their faces (although one had their bandana or what that was tied around his eyes…?), you couldn't tell them fully apart. all you could tell was the distinct differences in their heir color - one having white, the other having some shade of pinkish red and the last one having short black hair. it didn’t matter though, they were dirty, rotten bastards. all of them. they were closing in on you, a little at a time. you tried to fight, to pull away when one of them grabbed you. but they were dust-bitten outlaws and you were just a rancher's daughter. it wasn't even a struggle for them.

the one with pinkish red one slammed you down on the kitchen table to keep you in place.

your mama's good jug which she had poured milk in tumbled off and shattered on the floor. that was what you focused on for a second as the guy held you down.

not the wedding gift. anything but that - it was so dear to your ma, she would be devastated seeing that. the shards of blue and white ceramic in the puddle of milk. your chest began heaving as you struggled against the brute's grip.

while you were pinned, the tallest outlaw strolled over to your father's limp body. he had stark white hair peeking out from beneath his hat, and a thick black bandana tied tightly over his eyes - you would have wondered why he wears it that way and how he even sees if it wasn’t for you desperately tryna get out of the pink haired one's hold. he looked entirely too relaxed for a man standing in a home he ruined. with an annoyed whine, the white-haired man bent down, grabbed your pa by his hair, and yanked his head around roughly.

heeey, wake up," the guy grumbled, shaking your pa's head back and forth. "ain't no way you're actually weak enough to get knocked out from just that. come on, old man. don't play dead on me now, its time for business.”

the black haired one sighed as he stood behind him. “quit playing, we got business.”

the white haired one doesn’t turn to even spare him a glance, poking your pa's cheek now. “i am doing business.”

the pink-haired one holding you down groaned in sheer annoyance, his boots shifting on the floorboards. "satoru, just tie him up and take the damn bastard or shoot 'em so we can get moving. we ain't got all damn day for you to play around."

shoot him? oh god, no. they're gonna kill him right here. they were gonna kill your pa.

panic surged through you, hotter than the desert sun. you stopped thrashing against the table for a split second, drawing in enough breath to scream over the sound of your mother's muffled crying from the pantry.

"don't! please, don't shoot him!" your voice cracked, and you don’t think you've ever heard yourself sound so desperate before. you glared up at the white-haired man, tears of anger blurring your vision. "why are you doing this? what do you even want from us? we ain't got nothing as you can see!"

the white-haired man stopped shaking your pa's hair. he slowly let the old man's head drop back to the floor and turned his face toward you with a grin. even with the bandana covering his eyes, you could feel the weight of his stare pressing down on you, judging.

"well, now," he purred, taking a step toward the counter. "looks like the little bird's got a voice after all."

the white-haired man took his sweet time walking over, his boots clicking against the floorboards before he leaned his hip against the very counter the brute held you on. he looked down at you seemingly completely unbothered by your terror.

the brute just let out another heavy groan from behind you, his grip tightening on your shoulders as if to say he was sick to death of the man's theater, but he didn't say a word to stop him. despite all their complaining, nobody had tried to stop him.

"ain't got nothing, you say?" the white haired man asked, tilting his head. the black cloth over his eyes didn't hide the amusement you could tell he was feeling. "now, that's just a flat-out lie, sweetheart. or maybe you're just blind."

"i'm not lying!" you choked out, the wood of the counter scraping your cheek as you tried to look him dead in the face. "we're just ranchers. we don't have gold! we ain’t got nothin for scum like you!"

the white-haired man didn't twitch at the insult, the bastard thought it to be funny considering how he chuckled so loudly that it made your skin crawl, before he eventually pushed himself off the counter. he turned his back on you like you weren't even a threat, wanderin’ lazy-like around your kitchen.

all you could do was helplessly watched him through a blur of tears as he began to poke through your life like it wasn’t nothing special. he stopped by the mantle, his long fingers trailin’ over the dusty little family photograph your ma had saved from the old country, the one she was so proud to put up. he moved to the window, idly pinchin’ the fabric of the curtains - curtains you'd spent three nights patchin’ up by the light of a dyin’ candle just to keep the draft out for your baby siblings who always complained about sun ray's peeking through so early in the morning. then he started openin’ the cupboards. click, clack. one after the other, starin’ at the half-empty shelves, the meager tins of flour and the near-bare lard jars.

he let out a whistle that echoed through the house.

"well, now," the white-haired man mused, swingin’ a cupboard door shut with a soft thud. "either your old man was spinnin’ me a whole web of lies, or he's just a whole lot worse at ranchin’ than i thought he was. standard's real low around these parts, ain't it?"

your head spun. worse at ranchin’ than he thought? why he'd talk about your pa that way? he talked about your old man like he sat at his table before, like he knew the exact size of the herd you were supposed to have. it didn't make a lick of sense, your pa was an honest man! he didn't run with thieves, ‘specially such scummy ones.

"who are you?" you demanded, your voice tremblin’ but loud enough to be clear. "how do you know my pa? explain it to me, goddamn it!"

the white-haired man's attention snapped back to you in a second. he strolled back across the kitchen, his towerin’ frame castin’ a long shadow that swallowed you whole where you lay pinned under the brute's weight. the easy-going smirk vanished from his face, replaced by something that made him look every bit the monster you're sure he was.

"a debt is owed, darlin'," the white-haired man said, his voice droppin’ into a dangerous register. "a real long one at that. your pa owes me a mountain of money that he hadn't paid back in years. every winter it's the same story. 'i'm a good rancher makin’ good money, satoru, it'll come soon, just give me till the spring.' well, spring came and went, and my pockets are still pretty light." he mimicked your pa's voice far too theatrically.

he leaned down, his face inches from yours and you could smell him. he smelled…

…surprisingly fresh. surprisingly a whole lot like soap and cakes and sugar. maybe even a tad bit like peaches.

you barely registered the fact that your pa made a deal with a damn outlaw and borrowed money from 'em, you had to keep yourselves alive somehow.

"so i'm here to take what's mine. and since he ain't got the coin, i reckon i'll just have to take it out of his hide."

before you could even get a word past the lump in your throat, another voice did so before you.

"satoru. we gotta get goin’."

you blinked through the tears, realized the black-haired one had moved away from the door and was now standin’ right by the window, peeking through a gap in the patched curtains. you’d been so fixated on the white-haired man - on satoru, as he’d called himself and gotten called - that you hadn't even heard the him move.

"camp’s waitin’," the black-haired one muttered, his eyes scanin’ the dusty road outside. "ain't too good to stay in such an place for too long. the law might get wind."

the brute let out a harsh bark of a laugh from above you. "finally. thought we’d be rotting in this shack forever."

satoru just sighed, a totally fake, disappointed sound - you don't think you've ever seen a more theatrical man. he leaned down, and before you could flinch, his leather-gloved hand came down on your head, rufflin’ your hair like you were some stray dog he’d found on the trail. "well, duty calls, darlin'."

he pulled his hand away and gave you a mock wave. "bye-bye now. don't you worry none, you’ll probably see your pa again in a few years. i mean, if he survives the canyon work, that is." he shrugged his big shoulders, lettin’ out a little giggle that made your stomach drop.

survives?

satoru turned his back on you, noddin’ to the black-haired one. the two of them hauled your limp, unconscious pa off the floor, rough as sack of potatoes, and took the thick hemp ropes off their belt and started binding his wrists. they stuffed a dirty rag into his mouth, gaggin' him tight.

fuck, fuck fuck. panic was all you could feel as you thrashed against the table again, but the brute didn't even sweat, keeping you pinned flat. think, goddamn it, think. if they took your pa, your family was dead. the bank owned the land, the cattle, the house - everything was in his name and they sure as hell wouldn’t hand it over to your ma, and even then, the woman’s less clueless than your old man! a woman and three toddlers couldn't run a failing cattle ranch alone. the bankers would ride out here by next month and toss your ma and the kids into the dirt without a second thought. they needed him. they couldn't survive without him even if he was a little feather headed.

you couldn't let them take him, also because he was your pa.

"wait!" you screamed, your voice crackin’ so loud it rattled the remaining dishes. "take me! take me in his stead!"

the kitchen went dead quiet, you swear you could hear damn crickets chirping.

satoru froze, half-bent over your father's tied-up boots. he slowly turned his head toward you, his jaw slightly slack. for a second, his face looked completely shocked - genuine, real shock. but then, that goddamn smirk crawled right back onto his mouth.

he let out a dramatic gasp, straight-up feigning shame as he crossed his arms over his chest, playfully hiding himself like a schoolgirl caught out of uniform.

"my, my," satoru gasped, his voice going all high and mock-offended. "i mean, i know i’m incredibly, spectacularly handsome, darlin’, but ain't it a little bold to just throw yourself at a man like that? right in front of your kin, too?” he said ‘bashfully’, slightly turning himself away from you. “i'll have you know i'm as holy and pure as the virgin mary herself."

you just stared at him, completely bewildered. is this bastard insane? there was blood on his boots, a gun on his hip, your family was ruined, and he was standing there making jokes about his face!

the black-haired one didn't look amused either. he just gave satoru a look of pure disgust, shakin’ his head as he turned on his heel and walked right out the busted front door.

the brute seemed to have hit his limit, too. he let out a curse under his breath and abruptly let go of you, shoving himself away from the table. the sudden loss of pressure made your whole body ache, your ribs throbbing where they’d been crushed against the wood.

"harry up, satoru," the brute growled, checkin' the cylinders on his revolver as he moved toward the exit. "i’ll get the horses ready and wait outside. don't take all damn day."

once the brute cleared out, you pushed yourself up on your shaky elbows, your face burning with a mix of fury and terror. "you're a creep," you hissed at the white-haired man, your voice shakin’. "a total pervert."

satoru just tilted his head, his grin widenin’ like he enjoyed the tongue-lashing.

a cold chill ran down your spine… maybe you should shut up. you're acting like a damn idiot, what’re you doing, angering him? he can still shoot pa. he could shoot you. you swallowed your pride, squeezin' your eyes shut for a brief second before locking your gaze back onto the black cloth over his eyes. you had to double down. it was the only way, wasn’t it?

"i mean it," you said, your voice steadier now, forcing the desperation out. "take me instead of him. i can cook and i can clean the camp, i… i can do the laundry, and i know basic first aid. i can even patch up bullet holes and mix poultices. i'm useful! my pa is old and slow - he'll just slow your gang down on the trail. take me."

the mock-offended posture he had a second ago melted off him in an instant. satoru stood tall, his broad shoulders squared as he looked down at you.

the silence that stretched between you in that dusty kitchen was thick enough to choke on and a part of you wished you would, so you wouldn’t have to deal with this. this situation. even with that black rag tied over his eyes, you could feel him starin’ holes right through you, weighin' your worth, testin' your mettle.

the easy-goin' man he feigned to be was gone; this is what an outlaw is supposed to be like, every bit as cold and deadly and cruel as the rumors say ‘em to be.

"that what you truly want, darlin'?" he asked. his voice wasn't high or playful no more.

your throat felt like it was full of desert sand. your hands slightly trembled against the wood of the counter, your fingers twitchin'. you tried to get a word out, to spit a defiant yes right into his face, but your voice just wouldn't come. you had to settle for a firm, nod of your head.

satoru stared a second longer before he suddenly turned away, dismissin’ you like the choice was already made. he strode back over to your pa's limp form, bent down, and sliced the thick hemp ropes with a quick flick of his pocket knife. he yanked the dirty gag out of the old man's mouth and tossed it to the floor.

"reckon the trade's made, then," satoru murmured, clearin' his throat as he stood back up. "you’ll be payin' your father's debts off in labor. let's see if you're half as useful as you claim."

before you could even process it, his leather-gloved hand wrapped around your wrist like an iron manacle. he yanked you onto your sole feet, the sudden movement makin' your bruised ribs protest. he didn't seem to care. he pulled you right along behind him, your boots scrapin' against the wood as he led you toward the busted front door.

as you were dragged out, your heart ached fiercely for your poor ma. you could still hear her wailin' from inside the pantry, albeit it had quieted down to a low, ragged sobbing that broke what little spirit you had left. you could only hope your younger siblings would wake up from their afternoon nap soon - or whatever it was they were doing in the back room that they couldn’t hear all the commotion - and notice the quiet, find her, and free her. or maybe your pa would stir first. tears pricked your eyes as you thought of how your father would react when he finally woke up and found you gone. you thought of your ma and the little ones, how upset and broken they’d all be when they realized what you’d done.

the blinding glare of the midday sun hit you as satoru pulled you out onto the porch. down in the dirt yard, the brute and the black-haired one turned their heads. the brute raised his eyebrows slightly at the sight of you bein’ dragged along, clearly surprised the boss had actually taken you, but not questioning his judgment.

they were standin’ with three of the most magnificent creatures you’d ever laid eyes on. for a gang of cold-blooded thieves, their stock was immaculate. there was one majestic, deep brown horse twitchin' its ears, one absolutely beautiful and massive black steed that looked like a shadow come to life, and one striking white horse covered in dark spots. every single one of them was exceptionally beautiful, coat gleamin’ in the heat, and clearly well taken care of. even better than the horses in your family’s stall, you think

"you actually changin' the terms, satoru?" the brute grunted, tossin' the reins of the brown horse over its neck. "thought we were here for the old man."

"the girl volunteered," the black-haired one muttered from atop the spotted white horse, his voice flat as he adjusted his hat. he probably overheard your conversation with satoru considering there wasn’t much blocking the noise.. the door was busted down afterall. "said she’s useful. means less dead weight for us to carry if she can actually cook."

"ain't that the truth," satoru chirped, his fake charm returning in a flash. he led you straight toward that massive black steed - his horse. "besides, look at her. she’s got a lot more fire in her than that old codger."

before you could even guess his next move, satoru caught you by the waist. to your absolute surprise, he hoisted you straight up in the air with a little ‘huup!’ like you weighed nothing at all, settlin' you down sideways right onto the front of his saddle.

"hey-!" you started, but he just patted your knee, a grin stretchin' across his hidden face.

"can't be trustin' you with takin' one of the horses from your family's stall, darlin'," satoru said, checking the stirrups. "considerin' you could just ride off into the brush the second we turn our backs. not that i think you'd actually do that, mind you. you’d just doom your pa if you ran. but a good lawman - or a good outlaw - is always sure."

you sat uncomfortably, your thighs pressed against the hard leather of the saddle horn, your hands clutched tight to stay balanced. a second later, the saddle creaked as satoru swung his long leg over the back, mountin' the massive horse right behind you. his chest pressed flush against your back, his long arms comin' around either side of your waist to grip the thick leather reins. you were completely caged in by hard-earned muscle and the scent of trail dust.

the brute and the black-haired one spurred their mounts, and satoru followed right behind, his massive black steed clickin’ its hooves against the earth. as the horses broke into a steady trot, heading straight toward the red canyons on the horizon, you didn't look back. you couldn't bear to see the dust risin' over your ruined home.

the horses ate up the miles at a bone-jarring pace, headin' deeper into the foothills where the brush turned to rock. the midday heat was brutal, the sun heavy on your neck (although some of it was blocked by satoru's massive frame), but you just sat there meekly. you didn't say a word and kept your hands tucked into your lap, your eyes fixed on the twitch of the black steed's ears, tryin’ your best not to lean back against satoru’s chest. but every tilt of the trail shifted your weight, and his arm stayed locked around your waist like a iron strap, keepin' you from slippin' off.

after an hour of nothing but the sound of creakin' leather and hooves against dry dirt, they took off their bandanas - well, the brute and the black haired one at least. satoru kept his covering his eyes. you were surprised to see that both the brute and the black haired one had tattoo's - the brute more so than the black haired one considering he has most of his face done and the other only one singular tattoo across his nose like a scar. soon enough, the men started talkin’ over the wind.

"suguru’s gonna have a fit when we ride in without the coin," the brute grunted, pullin' his hat down to block the glare.

"let him pace," satoru chimed in from behind you, his voice vibrating right through your spine. he sounded completely cheerful, like they were just comin' back from a sunday social. " ‘sides, suguru knows the old man didn't have a red cent. besides, i brought back a worker. that's an investment, ain't it, choso?"

the black-haired one - choso - didn't look back from his spotted horse. "suguru ain't the problem. it's nobara. that girl’s probably goin’ to nag at us the second she sees we brought a hostage instead of supplies. she’s been sour since the flour ran low."

"nobara nags at everyone," the brute muttered, spittin' a stream of dark tobacco juice into the dirt. "if she starts squawkin' at me, i’ll tell her to take it up with yuji. speaking of - where’s our brother been anyway? didn't see him since we went out to ride. if he didn't finish the wood line like he was told, i'm clip-ping his ears."

"yuji was helpin' megumi with the horses when we left," choso said, his voice soft but carrying a strange, protective edge. "he's a good boy. don't go layin' a hand on him, sukuna. i told you about that."

you listened to them trade words, your mind workin' through the exhaustion. sukuna. so that was the brute’s name. and choso was the black-haired one. you glanced between them, catchin' the line of their jaws and the way they both held their reins. our brother. brother. you wouldn't have guessed it from the way the brute snarled at everything that breathed, but maybe there was a resemblance. and there were more of them waitin', too. a woman named nobara, someone named suguru, and a couple of boys named yuji and megumi. an entire damn gang hidden away in the canyons.

"hear that, darlin'?" satoru murmured, leanin' down just enough so his breath tickled the shell of your ear. "you'll be sooo popular with everyone. nobara’s a real spitfire, but i reckon you two will get along just fine once she realizes you can scrub a pot."

you didn't give him the satisfaction of a reply. you squeezed your eyes shut, your body achin' from the stiff saddle, and prayed the trail would end soon.

Scream 3

PAIRINGS: yan!plan batfam x neglected!billy loomis!reader | WC: 5.1k

SUMMARY: being the product of bruce's one night stand with a stripper, a small boy had the misfortune of being born in crime alley. with an absent father, absent mother and a criminal environment, how would you think said child would turn out?

WARNINGS: SEMI-UNRELIABLE NARRATOR! the story is from the readers pov, so things will be described how he perceives them to be even if said character, or he himself, didn’t want to come across like that or actually didn’t feel that way. angst, emotional abuse, lowk only semi-canon, murder, mentions of prostitution, physical abuse, neglect, bullying, mentions of death, blood and violence.

A/N: this kinda took a while so im sorry about that but ive been busy with school and my internship… on a positive note though, i have summer holidays now so i’ll have more free time !!! so expect updates to come faster lol. also to put it here officially if you didn’t see my post, louis isn't going to be the love interest. i thought about it, and while they’re fond of each other, i see them more as platonic… they’re more than best friends but less than lovers imo. a relationship as a thin as a veil if you may. this chapter is also a little shorter and more lazily written icl.

pt2 -> pt3 (here) -> pt4

it’s been three days since dick or bruce last saw your face in the flesh. three whole days of passing like a you're invisible through the manor’s drafty corridors, leaving nothing behind but maybe an empty bowl in the sink after youve eaten something.

the manor, to say straightforwardly, has been weird as fuck. it’s like those russian roulettes, where you always wait for someone to get the first shot before hell breaks loose. but nobody has acted on any of it yet - they’re just watching from the sidelines, letting the silence stack up until it’s thick enough to choke on and you want to choke them for it.

you don't give them the satisfaction of a confrontation either. it's better to simply slip through the cracks, have your bare feet memorize the exact spots on the hardwood that don't make a sound so they'll stay outta your way.

it is not exactly a hard job to take notice of how damn on the edge everyones has been around you lately.

you wouldn’t even have bothered to take much notice of it if you didn’t notice how it was more intense than usual - an undercurrent that makes the hair on your arms stand up. it leads you to believe that maybe dick saw that fucking spot on the denim jacket (curse that complete idiot louis for wearing it twice. how fucking braindead can someone get?)

the timing is too perfect. with the teacher murdered being an instructor from your own school, the pieces are lying right there on the table. you don't know for sure if they actually suspect you one hundred percent yet - they haven't brought down the iron gates or cornered you in the study or however else they treat their cartoon villains - but something is definitely off.

currently, you're sitting at the corner table in the academy cafeteria. the air in here is.. down right disgusting. smelling like greasy tater tots, old sweat, and the cheap floor bleach the janitors use to sweep the halls that leave that nasty sting in your nose. the cafeteria is a total fucking madhouse because every single kid is buzzing about gerald hayes - how maybe it is some mob hit ‘cause the teacher got on their bad side.

hah, as if.

you slowly pick at a turkey sandwich while louis vibrates right next to you on his plastic chair. chloe and maya are huddled close across the table, whispering under their breaths, looking like they might literally piss themselves if a locker slams too loud down the hall.

you look at chloe’s white knuckles clutching her glass and you resist the urge to roll your eyes. it’s pathetic. these people have spent their entire lives being and feeling protected, completely blind to how easy it is to break the world in half. their pathetic reactions are only to be expected but it should be a crime how simple minded people can be. as if the damn killer would strike someone he like he did gerald hayes in broad fucking daylight. use those two brain cells you got, won’t you?

and then, much to your (mis)fortune, seth slides into the booth. the school’s resident unhinged horror movie geek - even more so than you at times you reckon.

"you guys are literally fucking blind," seth rants, leaning so far across the table his navy school tie dips straight into chloe's ranch dressing. he’s waving his hands around wildly, his eyes wide behind his thick glasses. "this isn't some generic gotham mob hit. the maronis don't slit a guy's throat and sit him like a goddamned mannequin. this is.. this is more slasher movie style. whoever is doing this is following the absolute rules of the genre."

seth mulls, his face twisting with this frantic, breathless sort of excitement. there's a loud, annoying weight to the chatter that surrounds him, but your mind is already drifting somewhere else.

you don't know why so suddenly contrast to your just recent emotions, amusement begins to stir up within you. likely due to the hilarity of it - how could these kids be so dull-witted and completely clueless, in not only in guessing what went down - but to fumble the pieces back together so clumsily?

seth’s fingers are digging through the rumors, little schoolboy is trying to play detective so eagerly. doesn’t he know the best way to survive a horror movie is to not fucking engage? if you're gonna play with blood, shouldn't you be a little more meticulous?

idiot. that's the only word you can think of.

idiot. idiot. idiot.

and an idiot who thinks himself better than the rest of his lot at that.

you think about the instructor's death, the very thing they were all trying to figure out so desperately.

gerald hayes’ death lacked the weight of tragedy. it was less like losing a life than brushing away a fly that had spent more time circling the room than your own space - a minor nuisance, largely more someone else’s problem, but one whose disappearance still made the air feel cleaner. it's absence barely registered, save for the quiet satisfaction that it would trouble no one again.

gerald hayes died and the world just kept turning. the sky didn't fall, the police didn't magically appear at your doorstep.

"seth, shut the fuck up, you're being so extra," chloe groans, wiping her tie with a napkin.

"no, listen to me!" seth barks, pointing a carrot stick directly at your face and then at louis. "think about it! it’s always the quiet ones. the best friend, the creepy brother, whatever. look at you two! you guys never eat dinner at home, you're out past midnight like, i dunno - every single night, and you literally look like the suspects from a nineties thriller. not only that, you both are even worse horror movie geeks than i am! if i vanish next, the principal is checking you two first, cause im onto you both."

louis lets out a loud, high-pitched, completely unhinged wheeze, his shoulders bouncing as he stuffs a handful of chips into his mouth. "no way! seth thinks we are in a movie or something. tell him he is crazy."

you roll your shoulders, your head shaking once. you aren't about to give this little shit the satisfaction of even a flinch. the softest parts of this city are always the ones that get run over first, and seth is as soft as they come. you’re loathe to speak the truth out loud. not now; not when the manor is crawling with its own paranoid bats.

or maybe you’re the paranoid one?

"movies don't create psychos," you drawl as you curb a corner of your sandwich wrapper with your index finger. "movies make psychos more creative."

seth freezes, blinking at you stupidly . the table goes quiet for a split second, and louis giggles louder in the background, leaning forward with a massive, unhinged grin on his face.

"maybe you need to stop living in your damn fantasies seth," you mutter, a small smile touching your lips as you lean back against your seat. "you sound like a total amateur."

louis nods aggressively, flicking a tater tot across the table. "honestly, seth is a compleeetee idiot. you dunno whatchu talkin’ about."

you give louis a side eye with a raised brow - its not like louis knows either what the hell he's talking about half the damn time either.

louis keeps wearing his smile, giving you a thumbs up. ignoring him, you look out the cafeteria window, watching the grey rain beat against the glass.

while it’s pathetic and sad how idiotic they are, it’s a good thing for you. they are all looking in the wrong direction or sound too damn high to actually have anyone take worthy notice of their words - like how it is with seth.

by the time the final bell rings, the schoolyard is a total wash of rain, turning the gravel into a muddy slop.

fucking great.

louis managed to somehow get himself thrown into after-school detention for throwing a wet paper towel at the chalkboard, so you’re entirely on your own for the walk to the gates.

of course, you didn’t bother bringing an umbrella for whatever reason, one you regret now.

so instead shove your hands deep into your pockets, yank your hoodie you had kept in your locker up over your ears, and try to blend into the sea of people rushing for the buses.

then she steps right into your path.

a big, bright red umbrella cuts off your line of sight, the metal ribbing almost catching the edge of your hood. you stop dead, your jaw popping as you look up.

it's valerie.

you’ve heard of her, obviously. everyone at the academy knows the lead reporter for the school paper - mostly because she’s notoriously bossy, incredibly rude, and completely stuck up - or so they say. apparently, she treats the high school journalism column like some sort of crazed witch hunt.

she’s got a heavy vintage leather satchel slung over her shoulder, her hazel eyes narrow as she looks at you.

you think you can see some sort of wilderness in her eyes. spoiled and beautiful and easily bored.

"well, well, well if it isn't gotham’s favorite billionaire trust fund," valerie says, her voice fast, dripping with a wit that instantly reminds you of some old-school television reporter. she looks you up and down, a slight judging expression at your messed up appearance thanks to the rain - a look you almost grow offended by.

“god… wayne, you look miserable. tell me, do you always walk through a downpour brooding like the sky pissed on you or is the brooding look just a lifestyle choice? i don't think the girls are into that stuff, kinda stuff from yesterday if you ask me."

you force up a sarcastic smile - hahaha. how really fucking funny.

instead of replying immediately, you look down at the little red light blinking on her recorder. "i'm walking to my car, valerie. move the umbrella."

"not a chance. i need a quote, pretty boy, and you're the only one who isn't currently sobbing in the guidance counselor's office, running from the rain or-" she looks to your right side, the one where louis usually always walks next to you “-stuck in detention.”

she tilts the red canopy just enough to keep the rain off your face, her words hitting without a single break - god how much can she talk?

"let's talk about timing, shall we? because gerald hayes was found dead on a shipping crate early in the morning after heading out at midnight, and from what the office staff tells me, he officially, or well, wanted to, put a failing grade on louis vance’s permanent record a few days before he mysteriously died. and louis... well, louis didn't exactly look like he was going to take that lying down, did he?"

you keep your hands in your pockets, letting your head tilt to the side. "louis is an idiot. he gets mad at video games. he doesn't care about essays."

"right, of course not," valerie scoffs, her eyes dancing with a mocking light. "which brings me to my next question-“ your face palms, another one? “-because according to a very reliable source at the plaza theater, you and your little partner-in-crime were spotted walking out of the back exit quite late at night. right the same times hayes was nearing the docks, actually. which is a pretty incredible coincidence, don't you think? unless you two just really, really needed to do some late night thing like checking out the concessions near the harbor?”

your chest goes tight for a split second, your heart actually beating.

how the fuck does she even know that? nobody was supposed to be looking at the plaza’s side doors. fuck, you frequent that theater so much because the damn theater manager is a drunk who doesn't even check the ticket stubs, let alone the security cameras! your mind instantly starts tracking the variables.

surprisingly, this girl isn't an idiot. she’s actually smart. she’s the first person you've met in this entire goddamned school who isn't stumbling over her own feet.

you don't back down - you take a step forward, deliberately invading her space, leaning in under the red fabric until your face is just inches from hers. the smell of her wet hair and the plastic umbrella hits your nose.

you look straight at ber, your voice smooth and confident, completely dismissing everything she just threw at you.

"you're real cute when you're playing detective, valerie," you drawl, a small smirk spreading across your lips. "but you're barking up the wrong tree. louis and i were watching a late-night horror movie, nothing odd ‘bout that is there? you want a real scoop? hayes wasn't the type to look at the big picture. you should check his desk. people who focus too much on people pleasing and small mistakes usually miss the glare coming off the water."

it’s a sorta a lie, of course.

hayes died exactly because of a high school grudge, his throat opened up because he dared to threaten louis’s future (not that you think his future was actually threatened but louis insisted that it was - his parents surely would’ve saved his ass if it came hard to hard). but the hint you drop is subtle, buried in abstract nonsense about the glare on the water, a quiet nod to pier four, and the people pleasing (considering the dumb fuck did go to down there at midnight just to please his fucking superiors) that would make absolutely zero sense to an outsider.

valerie freezes. her breath catches right in the middle of her throat, her eyes widening just a fraction as she stares at you.

she’s very curious you can tell - almost completely intrigued, even?

however… valerie is valerie and she stays right there instead of leaving, her fingers tightening on the grip of her satchel.

"the glare on the water, people pleasing?" she mutters, her flustered expression showing for a fraction of a second before her usual stuck up one returns. she tries to keep her voice steady, but the rhythm is broken. "that sounds incredibly specific for someone who claims they were only inside a dark theater, wayne. what is that supposed to mean?"

"believe whatever you want," you whisper, your face going neutral again as you take a step back out into the downpour, letting the cold water hit your face.

"somethings are better left undiscovered, you don’t wanna get caught in something you can’t escape from." you turn on your heel and walk toward the parking lot, leaving her standing under her red umbrella.

the town car ride back is quiet, the steady slap of the windshield wipers the only thing filling the space while you sit in the back seat, staring at the rain.

your mind keeps looping back to the gates. to valerie. that odd, odd girl. she’s dangerous, not because she has a badge or a cape, but because she actually has a brain. most people are idiots, a thing you keep repeatedly getting reminded of, but she’s looking for the cracks, and you’re going to have to make sure she finds only what you want her to see.

the car rolls to a stop under the manor's grand stone portico. you swing the heavy door open, barely offering alfred a nod before you cross the threshold, expecting the usual. the familiar hollowness of a massive house that doesn't care if you're breathing or not.

you step into the grand sitting room and freeze, your hands freezing inside your pockets. the entire fucking circus is just… waiting for you. it’s completely uncanny, like walking into a room full of wax figures that someone forgot to turn off. bruce is a massive by the fireplace, staring down into the embers. dick is hovering on the edge of the leather sofa, spinning his keys. tim is leaning against the grand piano, his arms crossed tight with an uncomfortable to expression, while stephanie is sitting rigidly in an armchair, pretending to read a book that you know for a fact she hasn't turned the page of in a while because it stills the first damn page.

even cassandra is there, blending into the dark wood of the doorframe and damian right next o her.

they are all trying way too hard to look casual. it’s fucking terrifying.

the second your boots click against the floor, dick forces this massive, bright smile onto his face. it doesn't reach his eyes. "hey! you're home," he says, his voice bouncing a little too loud off the high ceiling. "how was the rest of your day at school?"

you don't answer, because what the fuck? your jaw pops in the dead silence, your eyes doing a sweep of the room. what the fuck is this?

they actually do know something, don’t they? fuck. did tim actually find an anomaly? did they run your data? you thought you covered every single track, you thought the watchtower encryption loop you built was flawless, but looking at them now, the paranoia settles deep into your ribs like grease.

"we were actually just talking," tim speaks up, his voice hesitant, completely lacking that professional edge he usually carries. he clears his throat, shifting his weight against the piano. "thought maybe we could all go out for a family dinner tonight. just us. we haven't really done that in… well, ever."

"yeah!" stephanie chips in a little too quickly, her laugh sounding thin and brittle as she shuts her book. "there’s that little italian place downtown. the one with the red checkered tablecloths you used to love when you were a kid. remember?" you stopped going there after jason died - its a place you frequented with him. how the hell does she know about that anyways? from dick? you doubt jason would tell her.

talking about him, next to dick, jason is sitting with his boots dragged back, his jaw locked tight as he stares at you through his messy bangs. he looks completely miserable, like he was dragged into this room by his throat - aka he looks like he always does. dick notices your stare glances at him, then back at you, the smile widening. "we even convinced jason to join us! the whole family. what do you say?"

jason doesn't say a word, but damian does. "this is a pathetic waste of tactical time," he sneers from the corner, his small frame rigid as he glares at his own shoes. "we should just take him already and go." so much for consent, wow.

cassandra’s eyes stay wide, bottomless, tracking the subtle hitch in your chest. "he is cold," she whispers softly, "it was raining heavily outside, it must still be on him."

dick takes a closer look at your clothes at her statement, eyes slightly widening. “oh… you're right cass-“

you blur their conversation out.

looking at the whole pathetic lineup, a wave of pure, unadulterated disgust rolls through your stomach. a family dinner. they spent years treating you like an invisible in their billionaire playground - someone odd and to keep away from, and now that a teacher from your school gets his throat slit, they suddenly want to play happy family? it’s hella weird. it’s a setup. they’re trying to soften you up, trying to gauge your reaction, checking to see if you've done some shit. if you’re still good so their savior complex doesn’t get hurt.

you reach down, yanking the sleeves of your oversized grey sweatshirt completely down until they cover your knuckles and you look right past dick’s bright smile, your eyes locking onto bruce’s gaze as the old man takes a slow step forward, clearly trying to find the words to "check in" on his blood son.

"i'm not hungry," you say. dick’s smile falters instantly, his jaw tightening. you take a step toward the grand staircase, turning your back on the whole uncanny display. "save the savior complex for the streets, bruce. it doesn't work on me."

the click of your boots against the first few steps is the only sound in the hall. you don't look back, you don't want to see their tight, anxious faces or whatever version of family guilt they're trying to push onto you today.

but the floorboards behind you suddenly groan.

"wait, just hold on a second," dick’s voice barks out, his light, athletic footsteps rushing across the rug. he’s chasing you up the stairs, his hand reaching out in the dim light of the landing like he’s trying to catch a ghost before it slips through his fingers. "we're just trying to talk to you. you don't have to always slam the door on us, okay? we just want to know how you're doing."

fuck that. you don't slow down, not even a slight pause to give him a witty comeback or look at his desperate, older-brother face. you just want to get the fuck outta here - your heart thudding against your ribs as you bolt down the corridor of the second floor. your room is right at the end, a door that represents the only somewhat safe square inch in this circus.

dick stops at the bottom of the second flight. you can hear his chest heaving, his sneakers squeaking on the wood as he realizes you aren't turning around. his arms drop back to his sides, completely blown off by the coldness you left in your wake.

you slide inside your bedroom, yank the door shut, and turn the heavy metal key until it locks with a sharp, echoing click.

dick comes back down the stairs slowly, his sneakers making a defeated drag against the bottom step. his chest is still heaving slightly, his face completely pale under the warm chandelier light. he rubs the back of his neck, his fingers twisting into his collar as he looks at the rest of the family, his hands still trembling just a fraction.

"he didn't even look back..," dick mutters, his voice dropping, completely stripped of that brightness he had earlier. he drops back onto the edge of the leather sofa, staring blankly at the rug. "he just... he bolted straight into his room and locked it. wouldn't even let me finish a sentence."

"because your strategy is entirely incompetent, grayson," damian sneers from his corner, his small arms crossed tightly over his crest as he glares at the wall. "forcing a pathetic performance of domestic tranquility upon an obvious tactical threat is a waste of resources. we should have subdued him and run an analysis on his garments hours ago."

"shut the fuck up, damian," jason barks out near the piano, his voice raw, an ugly, defensive snap cutting through the quiet. he’s still standing with his jaw locked, his eyes tracking the stairwell where you just disappeared.

he hates himself for letting bruce drag him into this little trap, hates himself for sitting here like a prop while they all look at you like you’re some wild animal. "he’s not a target. he’s seventeen. you don't talk about him like he’s some rogue we're trying to put in arkham."

"jason, nobody is trying to put him in arkham," tim speaks up, his voice anxious as he shifts his weight against the grand piano. "but when the shoe fits it fits. we can't just ignore that. if he's the one doing this... if he's the slasher, he's killing completely innocent people right under our noses. we have to find out the truth."

"but what if we're wrong?" stephanie asks, her hand clenching the edge of her book. she looks between dick and bruce. "god, did you see his face? he looked at us like he literally detests our guts. if he’s innocent, and we’re here running digital wiretaps on his room because a teacher from his school died, we are completely destroying whatever tiny bit of trust he had left in this family. he already thinks we hate him!”

cassandra looks at stephanie, moving over to place a comforting hand onto her shoulder. "he must be anxious because he knows the eyes are on him. he’s simply not used to it.”

stephanie gives cassandra a thankful glance in return.

bruce doesn't say a word. he stays entirely still by the fireplace, the orange embers casting shadows across the lines of his face.

he really thought keeping you away from the masks would protect you. he thought if you didn't know the horrors of the loop, you could stay pure, stay normal. instead, he just left you alone in the dark until you mutated into something he can't even read anymore. can't recognize.

..or maybe he never recognized you in the first place. never knew you at all.

"bruce?" dick prompts, his voice cracking slightly on the vowels as he looks up, pleading for an answer, pleading for someone to tell him his little brother isn't a monster. "since he obviously doesn’t want to spend time… do we just confront him directly?”

bruce slowly lifts his head, his dark eyes looking eighty years old under the warm lamplight. his jaw is locking into a hard, stubborn line.

"no," bruce rumbles, his deep voice putting an iron curtain over the entire sitting room. "we do not confront him. not without definitive proof."

"bruce, there's enough clues to make him a su—" tim starts. "i said no, tim," bruce cuts him off, his tone dropping into an authoritative register.

"just focus on the weapons shipment tonight. dick, you monitor his terminal logs. tim, watch his phone location. if he leaves this house tonight, i want to know the exact second his boots hit the gravel and where he goes. clear the room."

the room is completely dark, the only light coming from the sickly grey twilight bleeding through the rain-streaked window panes. you lean your back against the solid wood, letting out a breath through your nose.

they definitely know something. fuck. they’ve been a hundred percent digging but you don’t know what they know. no way they would act this fucking weird otherwise.

family dinner your ass.

your old man could not love, but maybe he believed he could, and you guess that must be enough for someone like him, because perhaps half this godforsaken world feels the exact same way. he believed he loved you, sure, to comfort his own miserable, regretful heart, but you could tell him face-to-face how fucking untrue that was. you could sit him down and list for him the exact number of times his heroic little crusade had placed you squarely within the jaws of death before you were even old enough to shave. you could list for him every single time he had completely failed to be a father to you, his motherless kid, while he was too busy running wayne enterprises and becoming a grand man of this world.

he loved, he loved; he loved himself. it is perhaps the way of all men, especially the ones who wear capes in the dark and try to play fucking hero.

a sudden buzz in your front pocket cuts through the bitter noise in your head. you pull your phone out, it’s a text from louis.

louis: boss man look out the window right fucking now look down

you let out a breath through your nose, your jaw popping as you walk over to the massive glass window. you look down into the rain-drenched courtyard below - the storm is absolutely hammering the laurels, the heavy green leaves shaking violently under the downpour.

and right there, tucked neatly into the wet dirt of the hedge near the iron gate, you spot him.

louis is crouching in the bushes, soaking wet, his clothes clinging to his skin like a second layer of plastic. his dark hair matted completely flat against his skull and the idiot is grinning this absolutely dumb, wide-eyed smile up at you through the freezing rain, trying so damn hard to keep his eyes open against the fat drops pelting his face. the second he sees your silhouette against the glass, he aggressively throws up a massive double thumbs-up, maybe trying to signal that he is okay? you don’t even know.

all you can see is that he's blinking like crazy as the water pools in his eyelashes.

you stand there for a second, staring down at his soaking wet, moronic ass, and you sigh once more. you roll your eyes so hard it almost hurts, rubbing the bridge of your nose as you look down at the blinding screen in your hand. he is a total lunatic, a complete loose wire, but he’s the only thing in this whole city that keeps you from going entirely brain-dead.

you: loose that smile you absolute fucking idiot and wipe your face
you: whats with everyone acting weird as fuck today??
you: the whole fucking clown show just tried to trap me in the living room offering me DINNER, trying to act like a real family. it was literally horrifying wtf
louis: no shot LMAOOOO 💀
louis: someone save poor boss man from family bonding boohoo 😿😿😿😿
you: stfu dick joke lit chased me up the stairs
you: i blew em off but it’s hella weird. yk why
louis: shii we are 🧑‍🍳 cooked👩‍🍳 boss man
louis: what’s the play??

you glance back out the window. louis is still down there, staring at his phone, his stupid smile flattening out into a slight, pouty twitch in his jaw - even in the middle of a panic, he’s still clearly annoyed that you ditched him when he got detention and is most likely going to whine about how you spoke to that reporter chick when going back to the manor instead of staying with him.

a soft, amused chuff comes through your nose and text him back.

you: get out of the dirt. i'm slipping out the back
you: were spending the night at your place. we need to talk.
louis: bet. car is around the corner. don't get caught by the big bad bat 🤫

you leave him on seen and slide the phone into your pocket, getting everything you need and taking an umbrella with you this time -

it's time to hatch up a plan.

if you wish to be tagged for the next chapter comment pls! :)

everyone in blüdhaven knew dick grayson.

either as the charismatic, eldest son ‘richard ‘dick’ wayne’ (although more commonly referred to as his old name which is richard ‘dick’ grayson) of playboy bruce wayne, or the heroic, good hearted vigilante of blüdhaven - nightwing - and the first robin to stand beside batman.

either way, he was the absolute dream man. he had the kind of perfect looks and easy charm that made people stop and stare in the street. he was the golden boy who volunteered and helped seniors cross the street safely - smiled at everyone, and made every single person feel like they were the only one in the room. people had either wanted him or wanted to be him. he could have had anyone he wanted in the entire city, but then he walked into the wayne enterprises building that was located downtown in blüdhaven.

you were working the front desk in the main lobby, fingers flying across a keyboard, completely ignoring the corporate crowd that had formed. dick came in for a meeting, but he froze the second he saw you. he walked straight up to your desk, leaning his forearms on the smooth marble counter with that famous, easy charm.

"hey," he said, his voice smooth and warm. "i think i'm totally lost. can you help me find where i'm supposed to go?"

he totally wasn’t lost - he knew the building like he knew the very own back of his hand, it was just an excuse to go ahead and talk to you if anything.

you were beautiful at first sight, yes, but something like that would have never been enough to make dick as enamored with you as he got.

you didn't even look up at first. you just pointed toward the elevators without breaking your rhythm. "floor forty-two, executive suites. there is a sign right next to the button for extra help.”

dick blinked, totally caught off guard how focused you seemed to be on your work.

usually, people turned to jelly when he smiled at them, but you didn't even blink. corny as it may be… it felt nice for a change. it was different.

he let out a short, genuine laugh that made you finally look up. when your eyes met, his smile changed from his usual public charm to something much softer, much more real. he stayed at your desk for another five minutes, completely ignoring his watch, just trying to make you laugh. he asked about your day, made a stupid joke and watched the way your lips twitched into a small smile. by the time he finally walked toward the elevators, he was interested in you.

after that, he would come to you every few times he stopped by wayne enterprises and before he knew it, he made it his mission to see you. he started dropping by the lobby every single day at the exact same time. he pursued you gently but completely. he brought you coffee from the good place down the street and wild flowers that he picked himself because, lets be for real, the store ones are either too much or look too fake.

he even listened to your loud laughs and your quiet dreams about leaving blüdhaven to start over somewhere better.

you were so different.

and he didn't- doesn’t mean it in that corny way some people do. you were a shade of something beautiful. a spark of rebellion interlaced with magic. just your existence gives him even more hope that goodness still exists. you were addictive. right from your smile down to your laugh, something about you kept pulling him closer. making him want to do things he long gave up on or thought that as a vigilante he wouldn’t have a chance with.

and then, oh, god.

before he knew it, he was in love with you.

he knew that much was true. love was the swelling, hopeful feeling in his chest every time he saw you.

love was the way he could forget about everything when you were with him. love was the catch in his breath when you looked at him in your intense way. love was the gasp you could draw out of him with the simplest of touches. love was the way he could... he could be himself around you, know that he didn't need to be perfect or worry about what you were thinking, because you accepted him.

he fell so hard for how stubborn and independent you were. he really believed you were his future.

he still remembers the first time you two came together and kissed so vividly.

it was quite late at night in the middle of winter, dick had just brought you home after finishing a fancy dinner date he had picked out for you both.

it was the picture-perfect romance scene - snow surrounding you everywhere while you both stood underneath a street lamp, everything so bright you could see nothing but the other.

dick looked at you then, drawing near with his face flushing - but this time not from the cold.

“you know what?" his breath was warm against your cheek with how close he leaned in, holding your waist gently and whispering in your ear. "there are a lot of stupid things to do, but i really want to do the stupidest thing possible."

“what’s that?"

"i want to kiss you.”

your eyes widened a bit before you smiled at him. "kiss me, then." you whispered.

"are you sure?" he murmured, his mouth curved into a teasing smile. "because once i do, i might not be able to-"

you grabbed the back of his head and yanked him down and that was his first kiss with you.

but then the late nights started ruining everything.

dick was never around when the sun went down. he missed your dinner dates entirely or showed up three hours late with some cheap excuse about a flat tire you most certainly didn’t buy.

the worst part was the injuries.

you started noticing deep cuts on his jaw and heavy purple bruises along his ribs when he came over to your apartment at dawn.

you thought he was seeing another person behind your back. you figured a guy who looked like him just couldn't stay faithful to someone who worked at the front desk of his fathers company. the constant lying made you miserable, and one night you finally stood in his entryway with tears in your eyes and told him you were done. dick panicked - which is rare because he was trained by the bat, one of his first lessons was to never panic.

his heart dropped straight into his stomach because the thought of losing you was too much to bear. he didn't want to lie anymore. he pulled off his mask right there in front of you and admitted he was nightwing.

but unfortunately, the big secret didn't fix your relationship.

it just traded one nightmare for another. you weren't angry about a fake affair anymore, but now you were completely paralyzed by fear. you spent every single night wide awake in your bed, staring up at the dark ceiling and wondering if he was bleeding out alone in some wet alleyway while wearing that damned suit - if he was going to return to you.

dick became a mess on patrol too. he rushed through dangerous fights and made sloppy mistakes because his mind was spinning, desperate to just survive and get back to your apartment.

you worked early morning shifts at the office while he ran across rooftops until dawn. you were both exhausted all the time and dick didn't have the heart to ask you to just quit and let him provide for you (although he had wanted to so badly. he knew you would say no, and he didn’t want to scare you off). the easy warmth between you just dried up completely, and you slowly started to drift apart.

and just like that, you were gone. you didn't even say goodbye, you sent him a message over text and just packed your life into brown cardboard boxes and left were planning to leave the city behind for something cleaner, something far away from the grime of blüdhaven. but for dick, he really thought that was it. he truly believed you were his end game, the one good thing he got to keep after a lifetime of jumping without a net. and now it was just over?

dick didn’t understand anything at all anymore. how could you not be here with him? he was so infinitely used to having you around that he felt completely lost and empty. without you, his soul was just gone. you used to turn his life into something so light and amazing, putting a tiny glint of happiness on absolutely everything. you were always different, always changing. sometimes you were smoky-pink and soft, sometimes you were dark and winged, and he honestly didn't know when he loved your eyes more - when they were open or when they were shut.

it was eleven p.m. - dick sat there in the dark of his empty apartment, trying with all the force of his soul to see you through the space between you both. his thoughts were begging for a heavenly visa just to fly across the state lines to where you were. his sweet excitement.

oftentimes where the nights he couldn't think about anything except how much he longed for you. he was gloomy and so, so fearful. silly thoughts swarmed around in his head, making him paranoid. he kept worrying that you would stumble as you jumped out of a subway car, or that some stranger would bump into you too hard on the street - and don’t get him started on the darker side of thoughts. he didn't know how he was going to survive the week.

his tenderness, his happiness, what words was he even supposed to think to make the ache stop? it was so strange because his whole life's work was about action and control, yet he had no idea how to deal with how he loved, how he desired you. it was such a frantic agitation, but at the same time, it was a divine peace. you made him feel like melting clouds immersed in sunshine - just mounds of pure happiness. and he was floating right there with you, inside of you, aflame and melting away. a whole lifetime with you would be like the movement of clouds, their airy, quiet falls, their lightness and smoothness, and the heavenly variety of their colors. his inexplicable love. he could not even express these floating, heavy sensations.

he stared at the blank walls, the gray misery pooling low in his gut. his limbs felt like lead. everyone around him noticed the change - tim would linger a little too long by the batcomputer, watching him with quiet, squinted eyes, and babs would let her voice go all soft and careful on the comms, but dick refused to talk about it.

he clamped his jaw shut and kept it all inside. he tried his absolute hardest to keep up that reliable nightwing attitude, playing the smiling, perfect hero who always had everything under control. it made him go even crazier. his chest ached with the effort of it because he desired nothing more than to just let it all fall apart, to drop the mask and the name and just rest between your arms again. you were everything he wanted, and now it was over?

but then… there was the warehouse.

the comms cracked with a mission to track down an illegal occult club of college kids operating out of an abandoned tenement on the docks - stealings things they believed to be magical artifacts, even when, dick could clearly see, that most of them weren’t and the kids just seemed to believe too much in fairytales.

he was supposed to be bagging the evidence for babs to catalog, but as his gloved fingers moved over the mismatched junk on the ritual altar, he froze.

among the cheap candles and stolen books was a piece of dark, twisted wood.

dick stared at it, the flurried beat of wings starting up behind his ears. he half-mindedly remembered this bark. he knew it from a long time ago, a half-forgotten ghost story from a circus trailer. he picked it up, turning it over in his hands.

how the hell did it get here?

he must have accidentally left the box behind during one of his rushed moves between blüdhaven safehouses years ago, and then from then on this occult club must have gotten their hands on it somehow for whatever reason.

the rough bark was dry beneath his leather gloves. dick stared down at the twisted wood, his thumb tracing the edge where it had once been severed from the tree - it looked so small resting on the ritual altar. so ordinary. like a stray piece of kindling left behind by kids playing at being witches.

but right next to it lay the small box and inside it the original packaging where one could still clearly read ‘one wish willow’ - while the package had been from years of neglect - the sight of it made his chest tighten.

the memory was sudden like a camera bulb going off in a pitch-black room. but dick remembers being ten years old, the air inside the circus trailer smelling of rain and the sweet, burnt scent of his mother’s vanity powder that dick so greatly misses.

his mother had sat him down on the edge of the cot, her long fingers holding that exact same packaging.

she had pulled this piece of wood out, holding it between them like it was a piece of the moon.

“this is a branch from the one-wish willow, dickie,”

her voice echoed in his head, sounding too bright, too far away.

“your father used it for me when i wanted to go back to the old country. if you find the right person and they try to leave, you use this. it ensures everything goes exactly how you want. it makes love perfect.”

back then, he had just laughed. he had kissed his mother's cheek and played it off as a fairytale, some old family myth spun from campfire stories and superstition. circus folk were full of things like that. he hadn't thought about it in twenty years.

dick looked around the dark warehouse. the college kids were groaning on the floor, the police sirens were still a distant whine over the harbor waves, and the comms in his ear were silent, waiting for his report. he was supposed to bag it - he was supposed to log it into the batcomputer as a Class-IV occult artifact and let it rot in a steel vault beneath the manor.

but… it was his. it belonged to his mother, to his father. it was a piece of the grayson name, an inheritance he had carelessly left behind in a closet during a midnight move through the blüdhaven.

and it was a piece of his childhood. he didn't know if the magic was real - he didn't know if his mother had been telling the truth or if the wood was just old, useless kindling - but as he looked at the branch, your face flashed in his mind - the way you looked when you packed your things, the total absence of him in your future. he was desperate. he was so tired of being the good guy who let things go.

what harm was there in keeping a childhood fairytale? he’d be disappointed either way, whether he keeps it or not.

with a quick, jerky motion, dick reached out and grabbed the faded blue packaging. he gently placed the twisted branch back inside its original packaging and then closed the lid over it. he didn't reach for the evidence plastic he put all the other stolen stuff in. instead, he slid the box deep into the heavy lining of his tactical belt, hiding it safe against his hip.

he would keep it… just to have a piece of home back. there’s no harm in that, right?

with that, he clicked his comms back on to report the bust clear.

few days crawled by like molasses. dick spent every hour feeling like an outsider in his own skin, but he made sure to keep tabs on you. he had stayed on good terms with your friends after the breakup - playing the sweet, understanding ex-boyfriend, the reliable guy who just wanted to make sure you were okay. and it was true! he did want to make sure you were okay! he loves you. he could never wish harm upon you. it was totally harmless...

(lie. of course, it was just a way to keep his fingers on your pulse, a way to know exactly where you were. not that dick could ever admit to such a filthy impulse - the golden boy didn't have dirty hands. he didn't stalk. he just... cared. too much, maybe. but caring wasn't a crime.)

but the trap snapped shut anyway.

he was grabbing a quick coffee with one of your girls from the office, smiling his perfect public smile while his chest hollowed itself out, when she casually dropped the news.

you had handed in your notice.

you were leaving blüdhaven for good, your train ticket already booked for the end of the week. you were going to be completely gone in the next few days.

dick didn't remember the walk back to his apartment. he just found himself standing in his own living room, the cold, crushing devastation hitting his knees so hard he nearly stumbled.

he threw himself onto the couch, the gray afternoon light cutting across the floor, highlighting the empty spaces where your things used to be. his head dropped into his hands. his throat felt tight, burning with an old, childish grease.

you were leaving. you were actually leaving him behind in this rotting city, and there was nothing his hands could do to stop it.

dick grayson, the hero who saved everyone, couldn't save his own life from falling into a black hole.

how could you just give up on you both? didn’t you know you two belonged together?

then his eyes shifted.

resting on the glass coffee table, right next to his car keys, was the faded box. he had forgotten he left it there after the warehouse bust. the silk ribbon was still frayed, looking pathetic and small under the dust motes dancing in the air.

dick stared at it. his heart did a strange, violent flip against his ribs. he didn't… fully believe in it.

he couldn't. he was a man of science, trained by the world's greatest detective to look for logic, to dismiss fairy tales and old circus superstitions - and even though he knows they are real, he knows not everything people claim to be magical is actually so.

his mother's words were just a comfort story from a dead woman, a soft myth told to a little boy in a rainy trailer because she loved his father too much to think about the dark parts. it couldn't be real. a piece of wood couldn't fix a broken heart.

but desperation is a sickening thing… isn’t it? it strips away your sense, leaves you raw and clawing at the dirt for anything to hold onto.

dick reached out, his fingers trembling slightly as he pulled the blue box closer. he flipped the lid open and took the branch out of the one-wish willow package.

the dark, twisted branch of the one-wish willow lay snug against the lining, looking cold and dead. he took it out, is knuckles turning white as he gripped the two ends.

he didn't expect a miracle. he felt stupid, pathetic even - a grown man hiding in the dark with a piece of kindling. but the thought of your train pulling out of the station made his mind go entirely black. if it didn't work, he was no worse off than before. but if it did... if it could just make you remember how good you used to be...

with a sharp, desperate jerk of his wrists, dick snapped the branch right in half. the wood gave way with a loud, echoing crack that seemed to swallow all the air in the silent room.

“i wish she would love me,” he whispered into the empty space, his voice cracking, raw and ugly with a lifetime of loneliness. “more than anyone or anything else in the world.”

the next morning came, and surprisingly, dick didn’t think anything of the willow branch.

he woke up with the same oily misery coating the back of his throat, the crack of the wood from the night before feeling like nothing more than a pathetic, embarrassing hallucination he had in desperation. a grown man playing with sticks in the dark, how stupid is that?

he dragged himself through his morning routine, put on his civilian clothes, and prepared to spend another day pretending he wasn't hollowed out from the inside.

but then the knock came.

it wasn't a normal knock because dick wouldn’t have reacted the way he had then - it was a frantic, heavy rattling against the wood of his front door, so violent that dick’s instinct had him reaching for a hidden blade before his mind could even register who it might be. he pulled the door open, his jaw tense.

it was you.

you were standing on his welcome mat, but something was immediately, deeply wrong. dick froze, his hand tightening on the edge of the doorframe.

your face was paler than usual - lost of color, your hair slightly damp from the morning mist, but it was your eyes that made his stomach drop into a cold, dark well. they were wide - wide and completely unblinking, glassy with a terrifying, frantic intensity that looked nothing like the soft, calm gaze he had spent months falling in love with. your fingers were trembling, twitching against the straps of your bag, and your chest was heaving like you had just run a marathon across the city lines just to reach his threshold.

"hey," dick started, his voice small, caught completely off guard. "what are you-"

"i woke up and my chest felt tight," you interrupted, the words spilling out of your mouth in a sharp, breathless rush. your voice climbed into a high, frantic register. "i couldn't breathe, dick. i couldn't breathe until i saw you. why didn't you call me?"

dick blinked, his hand dropping from the doorframe. "i... i thought you didn't want me to. you're leaving, remember? you bought the ticket-“

"no, no, no," you rattled out, shaking your head so hard your hair whipped across your face. you took a desperate step forward into his entryway, closing the distance between you. "you have to tell me you love me. please tell me you love me right now."

he stayed silent for a second, before narrowing his eyes. "sweetheart, of course i do," he murmured, his brain struggling to process the sudden, violent shift. he reached out to touch your shoulder, but the second his fingers brushed your skin, you went entirely rigid.

"i love you more than anyone else in the world," you gasped, your voice cracking as your hands clawed desperately at the fabric of his jacket, pulling him down toward you with a strength that felt completely unnatural. "i love you so much it hurts. i can't think about anything else. i can't do anything else. tell me you love me. say it."

you were shaking, your teeth literally chattering together as you pressed your face into his neck, sobbing out the words over and over again.

dick stood completely rigid for a split second, his arms hanging limp at his sides. his mind was screaming, because how the hell could it not? this wasn’t normal and he knows this. never in a million years would you act like this. the logical side of his brain telling him that this was sickness, that this was some weird magic overriding your entire personality.

it was a horror movie playing out on his own rug.

and yet… "i love you," dick whispered into your hair, his voice suddenly thick. "i love you so much."

"say it again," you begged against his skin, your fingers digging so deep into his back it bruised. "don't stop saying it. please don't let me go."

the selfish rot in his chest won.

he didn't care that your eyes were hollow or that your breathing was frantic, you were here. you weren't leaving. his bright, handsome golden-boy smile broke across his face, wide and blind, as his arms finally wrapped around your waist, pulling your twitching, frantic body entirely into his space and locking the door behind you.

he could enjoy this just for a bit, right? he can find a way to fix this later… you’re safer with him than you'd be with anyone else in this state.

the next few days blurred together.

dick kept telling himself that he was going to look into it - as he had said he would from the very start - that he would find a way to reverse whatever the hell had happened. he was a hero, right? he was supposed to fix things like this.

but… every single time he sat down to actually think about a solution, he found himself pushing it back. tomorrow. he’d figure it out tomorrow.

because really, how could anyone blame him? you were just so completely adorable. this was everything he had ever wanted, everything he had spent months begging the universe for while staring at his empty ceiling. you weren't going to work anymore. you had completely forgotten about the office, forgotten about your train ticket, forgotten about leaving him behind. when dick wasn't out on patrol, he had you entirely to himself. he even found himself, much to his shame (not really) acting into your behavior.

the good parts of it were like a fever dream. you acted like his spouse, like you two had been married for years and had already promised your entire lives to each other.

"look at you," you whispered one morning, your fingers smooth and warm as they fussed over the collar of his shirt, straightening the fabric with small, careful movements. you leaned up on your tiptoes to kiss his jaw, your eyes wide and shining. "my handsome future husband. you look so perfect today, dick. i made your favorite breakfast. we have all morning together, right? just you and me."

dick let out a soft, breathless laugh, his hands coming down to rest on your waist. "yeah, baby. just you and me. you don't have to worry about anything else anymore."

"i don't," you murmured, pressing your face into his chest, humming a sweet little song while you held onto him like he was the only solid thing left in the world. "i only worry about loving you."

you showered him with so much raw, unadulterated affection that his chest felt like it was going to burst from the sheer pressure of it.

but.. of course, then there was the bad part. the terrifying, suffocating reality of the spell.

leaving the apartment for a night patrol became a psychological war - quite literally. the second dick even leaned toward his closet to grab his gear, your entire demeanor would shatter. you threw yourself onto your knees, wrapping your arms around his ankles and digging your fingernails into the fabric of his jeans.

"no, no, please don't go," you wept, your ribs shaking with a frantic, gasping sort of panic. your eyes were huge, glassy, and completely desperate as you looked up at him from the hardwood floor. "if you go out there i won't be able to breathe, dick. please. it hurts. my chest hurts when you move away from me. what if you don't come back? what if you leave me here?"

"hey, hey, look at me," dick whispered, his heart thumping hard against his ribs as he dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around your trembling shoulders. he rocked you back and forth on the rug, pressing frantic kisses into your damp hair. "i always come back to you. i'm just going to clear the sector. i'll be back before dawn, i promise. you're my whole world, sweetheart. you know that."

"promise me," you begged, your fingers scratching at the floorboards, your face lost of its comor and streaked with hot tears. "promise you won't leave me alone. say it. say you're mine."

"i'm yours," he murmured over and over, soothing the frantic puppet he had made of you until your breathing finally slowed, until you frantically agreed to let him go. and the second he stepped through the window, he knew you were just standing by the door, waiting in the dark.

it didn't take a genius like tim or bruce or barbara to connect the dots.

dick knew exactly what had happened - it was the one-wish willow. the old circus tale wasn't a fairytale at all; it was legit, a terrifyingly real piece of ancient rot that had twisted your mind.

sitting on the edge of a rainy roof during a quiet patrol, dick thought about his parents.

your father used it for me.’ his whole life, he had thought his parents had this beautiful, flawless romance - but it was a lie. his father had broken her soul first.

dick shrugged the thought off into the cold wind. he didn't want to think about the ethics of it. he didn't want to analyze the horror.

in a way, he completely understood why his father did it. if his father had loved his mother even half as much as dick loved you, then of course he snapped the wood. how could you let something that precious walk away? you couldn't. you had to keep it, even if you had to break it first to make it stay.

more time passed and you had even called your friends from the office and told them you were staying in blüdhaven. you told them you were moving back in with dick, that the train ticket had been a mistake, that the dream of starting over somewhere cleaner was gone, that dick was your dream. they were happy for you, of course.

they didn't know anything.

they just thought it was a classic, messy reconciliation between two people who couldn't let go.

any lingering shred of shame dick had about the willow branch vanished completely. the golden boy didn't feel guilty anymore - he was entirely lost within his own bliss, floating in the warm bath of your forced affection.

but sometimes, in the quiet spaces between your frantic kisses, he felt himself missing you. the real you.

you still acted a bit like you did before - you used the same nicknames, you wore the same clothes - and you joked just the same. but outside of him, you did absolutely nothing. you didn't pursue your passions, you didn't read those books you used to love anymore - only barely when you weren’t giving all your attention or dick or crying about him leaving your side.

all those fierce, independent passions he had fallen so hard for were just... gone, wiped clean by the magic.

but dick told himself it was fine. if it meant you and him could be this perfectly inlove forever, he could live with the trade-off. who cared about hobbies when you had devotion?

"look what i bought you," dick said one afternoon, setting a new box of expensive watercolors on the kitchen table, desperately trying to spark something behind your wide eyes. "i remember you saying you wanted to finish that canvas by the window."

you didn't even look at the box. your gaze stayed glued to his jaw, a tight, frantic smile stretching your cheeks. "i don't need to paint, dickie. i just want to sit here and watch you. can i hold your hand? please let me hold your hand while you read the reports."

"yeah," dick murmured, a tiny, hollow ache opening up in his stomach before he squeezed it shut. "yeah, baby. of course."

but the magic wasn't seamless.

glimpses of the real you, or thats what he thinks it is, trapped and rotting underneath the spell, started poking through the cracks.

it happened first at night.

dick finished a brutal patrol, shedding his tactical gear in the living room before sliding into the dark bedroom. he expected to find you asleep, curled up on your side of the mattress waiting for his warmth.

instead, he heard it. a wet guttural sound.

he flipped his small penlight on, the beam cutting through the shadows, and froze. you weren't in bed. you were shoved into the far corner of the room, sitting flat on the hardwood floor with your knees pulled tightly against your chest. you were hysterically crying, but it wasn't the loud, dramatic weeping from the daytime. it was silent, your shoulders heaving violently, your breath hitching in dry, miserable gasps.

in the unnatural glare of the flashlight, you looked incredibly creepy. the shadows under your eyes were so deep they looked like bruises, your skin pale and drawn, looking old and withered under the intense, suffocating pressure of the spell.

"sweetheart?" dick whispered, his footsteps resounding softly against the floor as he approached the corner. "what are you doing down there? come on, get into bed."

you didn't move. you slowly lifted your head, your wide, unblinking eyes locking onto his face. the expression there wasn't the hollow adoration he was used to. it was pure, unadulterated terror. your lips twitched, stretching into a grotesque, forced smile that didn't reach your weeping eyes.

"i'm so happy," you whispered, your voice hoarse, sounding like it was being dragged through gravel. the words were frantic, but the tone was dead. "i love you so much, dick. i'm so happy. please don't let me leave. i love you. i love you. i love you."

a cold chill ran down dick's spine, the sheer creepiness of the sight fazing him for only a split second…

choosing not to give this further thought, he turned off the penlight, letting the comforting darkness swallow the sight of your haggard, weeping face.

he walked over to the mattress, peeling back the blankets and laying himself down.

"come to bed," dick called out into the quiet room, his voice steady, coddling, and completely unbothered. "join me on my side, my love. it's cold out there."

there was a frantic scramble in the dark - the sound of your limbs rushing across the floorboards like a frightened animal. within seconds, your shivering, damp body threw itself onto the mattress, your arms wrapping around his neck with that familiar, choking grip. dick closed his eyes, his large hands coming up to stroke your hair as you both drifted off to sleep, perfectly content to ignore the monster hiding in the dark.

another time was when dick decided it was time to take you out.

he wanted to show you off - he wanted to be that normal, happy couple walking down the sidewalk under the streetlights, the way he always dreamed they would be when you were drifting apart.

he took you to a nice, dimly lit restaurant downtown. dick looked incredible, wearing a black jacket that made his shoulders look broad, his hair pushed back just right. he was smiling at the hostess, pulling out your chair with that effortless grace that made everyone in the room look over like they would always do.

but across the table, the illusion was already starting to split down the middle.

you were dressed up, your fingers twining tightly together over the white tablecloth. your wide, glassy eyes never left his face - hell, you didn't look at the menu. you didn't look at the beautiful candles or the people around you. you just stared at his jaw, your breath coming in tiny, shallow hitches.

"you look so beautiful tonight, baby," dick said, his voice smooth and warm as he reached across the table to cover your hands with his large palm. he was trying so hard to keep his voice steady, to ignore the slight tremor in your skin. "isn't this nice, hm? just getting out of the apartment for a little bit."

you didn't answer. your tight, frantic smile just stretched a little wider, your unblinking eyes drinking him in like you were starving.

dick cleared his throat, his tone dropping into something casual, a subtle test to see how far the boundaries could stretch. "i was thinking... maybe after we finish up here, i should head out for patrol for a bit. and maybe you could spend the night at your friend's place? she missed you at the office, and it would be good for you to get out."

the words hadn't even fully left his mouth before your entire face went completely blank. your fingers froze against his knuckles.

"no, no, no, no," you started, your voice suddenly climbing into a high, frantic register that cut right through the quiet clinking of silverware in the dining room. you pulled your hands back, shaking your head so hard your hair whipped across your face. "don’t do this, i thought we were having a nice date."

"sweetheart, we are," dick whispered quickly, his heart doing a sudden, violent flip against his ribs. he leaned forward, trying to catch your eye, trying to project that calm, reliable hero persona. "we are having a nice date. look at me."

"no, you're trying to send me away," you gasped out, your voice getting louder, making a couple at the next table turn around to stare. a tight, frantic smile was still stretched across your face, but tears were already spilling over your eyelids, tracking thick and hot down your cheeks. "you're telling me to go. i thought we were having a nice date, dick! why are you doing this to me? why are you making my chest feel tight?"

"i'm right here, baby, i'm not sending you anywhere," dick murmured, his thumbs trying to soothe over your knuckles, but you were shaking so hard your fork clattered against the porcelain plate.

"tell me you love me," you begged, your fingers suddenly clawing into his jacket sleeves across the table, digging your nails deep into the fabric right there in front of everyone. your chest was heaving under your nice clothes. "say it right now. say it so i can breathe. i love you so much it hurts, i love you more than anything in the world, why can't we just have a nice date?"

you were weeping now, a hysterical sound, even though your lips were still forced into that terrifying, ecstatic grin.

dick stared at you through the candlelight - an outsider would have looked at your weeping, grinning face and seen a total horror story. they would have seen a person completely losing their mind, a scene being caused in a public place.

but dick didn't care about the people staring. his mind instead twisted the terror into pure, unadulterated devotion.

you loved him so much you couldn't even handle the thought of a single night apart… your friends didn't matter. patrol didn't matter. you were entirely, perfectly his.

"you’re right," dick whispered, his expression softening into a look of absolute, unwavering focus as he watched you. the realization that you were so completely centered on him seemed to settle his own internal restlessness.

he stood up, placing enough currency on the table to cover the bill and more, his attention never wavering from yours. he reached out, firmly taking your hand to steady your trembling. "we don't need to go anywhere else. let’s just go back home. we can stay there as long as you need, and nothing will come between us."

weeks turned into months and dick now barely went on patrol anymore, leaving the city rooftops for the other vigilantes to keep safe.

he had looked into it, though. the one wish willow thing.

one night, while you were asleep with your fingers tightly locked around his wrist, his old detective habits had kicked in. he had dug through old databases, tracking down the ancient lore of the one-wish willow. it took him a while, especially doing so behind your back, but he found the answer. he found the exact sequence required to break the spell, to shatter the curse and set your mind free.

but dick knew what would happen if he did it. the second the magic lifted, the terrifying, hollow adoration would vanish. you would look at him with your real eyes, and you would remember the packing boxes, the train ticket, and the drifting apart. you would realize what he had done to your mind, and you would hate him. you would leave him behind in the dark, and this little bliss he had come to love would disappear forever. he couldn't do it. he just couldn't let you go.

it was a quiet night. after hours of shared love between you on dick on his bed - the kind where you gripped his shoulders so hard your fingernails left bloody crescents in his skin - the air in the bedroom grew completely still. you were lying on your side, the sheets tangled around your legs, your body heavy and exhausted.

dick was holding you tight against his chest, his large hand smoothing down the bare skin of your back, listening to the hum of your breathing.

but then, your eyes didn't snap open with that bright, frantic daytime stare. they stayed closed, but your lips began to move. your voice came out meek, quiet, and rough - not at all like how you usually were.

"dick?" your voice whispered out in the night.he peeked over to where you were on the bed, your face pale against the white pillowcase. still asleep, eyes closed.

"it’s nice you aren't freaking out anymore," he comments softly, his fingers pausing on your shoulder.

"be quiet," you urge in that strained, cracking whisper. "don’t wake the other one up."

he moves closer to the bed, pulling himself up onto his elbow so he can look down at your face. seeing you like this is so domestic. cozy, in a way.

"kill me, richard," you beg, your sleeping voice raspy and desperate, not using his nickname. "please kill me."

his eyes go slightly dark at the usage of his actual name. but then he laughs, light and coddling, brushing a stray hair away from your forehead.

"this again?" dick smiles, his tone completely unbothered. "don’t be like that, my love. look at us. look at how happy we are."

"i’m not happy," your voice is hoarse, sounding like you hadn't used it in a lifetime, like it was being dragged from the bottom of a deep, dark well. "i’m trapped in my own body, watching some demon wear my skin and-"

"we could be happy!" he interrupts, drifting closer, his warm hand caressing the side of your face, his thumb rubbing against your cheekbone. "there’s a way to undo this, y'know? you think i want an imitation? i've always wanted the real thing, baby. if you just give up and accept it, the magic blends. we could be together. just us. what do you say?"

you remain silent. the trapped soul inside you refuses to give in, remaining completely stubborn in the dark.

he clicks his tongue against his teeth. he never likes how stubborn you get sometimes.

"guess i'll have to settle for the imitation for now," dick sighs, the heavy weight of his obsession settling over him like a thick blanket. "the offer's always open, though."

craving for a little more sweetness to wash away the cold chill in his bones, he shakes your shoulder gently and calls out your name.

your eyes snap open instantly. the hollow, desperate love floods back into your face, wiping away the terror. you squeal, throwing your bare arms around his neck.

"dick!" you cry out, your voice bright and ecstatic. "you’re back. welcome home."

you kiss him fiercely, your lips desperate and warm, and dick kisses you back, completely drowning himself in the fake warmth of the spell.

after you fell back into a deep, spell-bound sleep, your breathing leveling out against his neck, dick stared down at your peaceful face in the shadows. his heart was pounding hard against his ribs.

he saw the terror he had caused - he knew your soul was trapped in a living nightmare because of his selfishness.

but as he looked at your quiet, sleeping face, his mind twisted the truth just further, just like his father’s mind had done all those years ago to his own mother. he ran a gentle hand through your hair and leaned down to kiss your forehead.

"i can't let you go," dick whispered back into the dark shadows of the bedroom, his voice cold, desperate, and final. "is it really so terrible to be mine?"

I’m sorry if this is intrusive but could you please tag your fics as female reader or at least just put it in the author’s note if you don’t want to tag it, I’m sorry if this is rude or anything I’m just tired of getting halfway through oneshots thinking it’s probably gender neutral (or maybe even male on the rare occasion) only to read “girlfriend” in reference to the reader, again sorry if this is rude do whatever you want, I know most people who read x readers are women but it would just be nice to know beforehand, I really like your writings and you’re very talented, it’s just not fun to realize as a guy who reads this stuff, sorry if this is rude or anything I don’t mean to be

OMG OFC!! to be honest, im kinda bad at tagging so this is on me. this actually makes me think about instead if naturally going female if i should begin writing a gn!reader now…. ofc, except for my scream fic cuz theres alr 2 chapters out as him as m!reader and icba to change that LOL. but thank you for pointing it out!!
