Finally I can share my piece for the @batfamilyzine Off the clock: Batfamily Zine

I am extremely proud of how this one turned out, you just know Damian is complaining there’s on vegetarian option for him there, don’t worry they will get him a veggie burger next.

this was done as a pseudo test if i could make print style art, im going to ask my graphic designer girl if she could try make it look more print like :)

since i got asked a bit on cass’ height on twt ill explain my design thoughts here! ( its also partly because my reference was like this)

also pls ask me stuff on my ask box i like getting requests

cass : black hair, she has a bad habit of cutting it herself when stressed so it can be a bit messy. likes thin layers and doesn’t wear jackets often because of the feeling and pressure. shes 5’8 and got height from her dad, ballerina lithe build. she just likes wearing clothes that remind her of her costume. :)

steph : curly blonde hair, she used to straighten it religiously but now she takes good care. love having it in a ponytail, freckles and moles on her body, teal/blue eyes, and little bunny teeth. shes short (5’2) with a bit of a soft body, toned though because of vigilantism. downtown style fashion,

every so often someone will emerge into the cass tag completely dead set on stripping any nuance from cass and david’s relationship and just absolutely refusing to engage in the text by way of calling everyone who dares suggest david and cass love each other (a central story beat through out batgirl 2000) media illiterate and implying they’re an abuse apologist. and I just have to look to the midwestern conservative wally west gods for strength

I hope to god you never have to read this.

It was the ring on her finger that stopped me. Does that make any sense? It reminded me of your ring, your hand, and I felt I had to do something. Then, with the gun in my face, all I could think of was you—not the idea of you, but you as you were— at home, waiting for me, for the food in my hands… and I started to walk away.

I am very, very sorry, my love. Some stupid, juvenile, comic-book notion of heroism turned me around and now you have to pay the price. All I can say is that I love you, I always have, and nothing they do to me can ever change that.

It's just that David didn't chase her. He didn't look for her he stayed put in that house & watched her tapes & always believed somewhere in the pit of his soul that she'd come back to him. And the first time he sees her in years & years is through the scope of a gun and he can't bring himself to pull the trigger. And the first word she says to him is "stop." He never wanted her to speak, but he cries anyway. He loved her so much & misunderstood her so completely that he never truly believed she'd run away forever. He always expected her - maybe still expects her - to run right back into his arms.

I’m so compelled by cass’s childhood because obviously it was horrifically abusive to a frankly insane degree but also we Know there were normal moments like David bringing her out to see the stars and showing her comfort etc and I can’t help but wonder about those Normal moments, like just what is done when raising and caring for a child. Like he had to feed her. He gave her birthday gifts do you think she also got sweet treats. Maybe that’s why she likes chocolate ice cream. I’m gonna kill myself

rereading batgirl 2000 and a detail I guess I knew in the back of my head but never fully registered was that David Cain never moved out of the house he raised Cass in in Macau. He stays in that house with his tapes and relives the glory days of him and his runaway daughter who hates him. That scene where Bruce beats up David in front of the tape of little Cass throwing knives and smiling at the recorder was done in the kitchen. Cassie probably walked through that room a thousand times….

have u guys noticed the phenomenon that's like

- m/f ship between a nonblack man & a Black woman

- it's either canon (e.g. mel/jayce arcane, arthur/guinevere bbcmerlin) or entirely plausible (e.g. prism or coupé/robert dispatch)

- fanbase overwhelmingly pairs nb man off with another nb man and disengages from the Black woman character, shunting her into a background wise & sassy caretaker role (for which there is a name) or leaving her out of fanworks entirely

- fans who do this ^ claim it is an expression of love and admiration for the Black woman character, actually, bc the nb man (who may be her canonical partner) "can't handle all that" (he may be perfectly competent and engaged; she may be totally low maintenance; it has no bearing), she's just too wonderful (too much) and out of his league (lacking in flaws and interiority and fan appeal)

have we all observed this and can we see the multiple dimensions in which it is racist ☝️ i'm not bringing it up to make any beautiful fujos feel bad abt shipping this or that, just to ask for some consideration of what ppl are saying abt Black women when they make their excuses to each other. like you can just not make the excuses. yk?
