𑣲┊[ Distractions

aka… ponyboy often being distracted in your presence

warnings ~ all fluff, reader's outfit is briefly described, smitten ponyboy, shy!reader
w/c ~ 290+

── .✦ a/n ~ this is lowkey more verbally than silently but I do already have something writen for his silent love!

Ponyboy Curtis doesn’t often show his love for you with words.

More often than not, his way of expressing his intense love for you is through physical touch — like hugging or kissing — or through poems he never shares.

But, there are some moments where he can’t keep his mouth shut.

Like when he took you to prom, and you got all dolled up and he couldn’t take his eyes off you and your shimmery dress.

Or, more likely, moments like now, when you’re simply doing tasks around his kitchen.

You’re standing at the sink, hair pulled away from your neck, wearing a loose t-shirt and shorts.

To him, you’ve never looked more beauitful. And so, he can’t help saying it.

“You’re unreal.” He mutters breathlessly from his spot on the floor.

You turn, facing your boyfriend, a bashful smile appearing on your lips.

“I’m bein’ serious. You’re, like, otherworldly.” The boy grins, standing up and approaching you. His arms encircle your waist and his chin comes to rest upon your shoulder.

“You oughta stop doin’ that to me, less I blush so hard I overheat.” You giggle.

He plants kisses across your neck, tickling the expanse of your skin.

“Can’t help it. You’re just too pretty.”

“Whatever you say, sweet-thing.”

Your hands resume their previous motion, washing the dirt and grime off of a week’s worth of dishes. Things often get like this, especially when Darry works overtime. That’s just another reason Ponyboy loves you — you love not only him but his family, too, and you aren’t scared to show it.

He places one final kiss to your cheek, before finding a bottle of cleaner and getting to work taking care of the countertops. You’d asked him to start cleaning long ago, but he’d been distracted.

Clearly.

𑣲┊[ Hey, sweetcheeks!

aka… the movies not being as private as one would expect

warnings ~ fluff, the gang being a little weird, embarrassed ponyboy
w/c ~ 570+

── .✦ a/n ~ guys forgive me for taking so long to get these out ive been a little burnt out and busy💔

The smell of freshly buttered popcorn and cigarette smoke wafts into your nose when you step foot in the drive-in.

“D’you wanna go get us seats while I get us some snacks?” Your boyfriend, Ponyboy, asks sweetly.

“‘Course. Remember to get me a coke, yeah?” With a nod and kiss to your cheek, he walks off in the direction of the food stands.

You wander about the area, searching for the best seats you can — not to far from the screen, not too close, not by anyone boozing it up — until you find the right spot. There isn’t anyone around, it has a perfect view of the screen, and is pretty close to the food.

You get settled in, smoothing your skirt out over your legs, holding your purse in your lap. The movie doesn’t start for a while, and Pony isn’t back, so you occupy yourself by people watching.

You spot a lady holding onto a man’s arm. You see a couple fighting. You see a posse of older girls presumably gossiping..

There’s such a vast variety of characters in this town, you think to yourself.

A handful of minutes later, the sound of maniacal laughter fills your ears.

You turn, watching a group of five boys a little older than you walk up to the empty seats nearby. One of them, with ginger sideburns and a beer bottle in hand, notices you staring. A look of recognition falls upon his face. Then, a grin.

“Hey, sweetcheeks!” The boy grins as he approaches.

You smile awkwardly, shrinking in on yourself. You’re well aware of the way that men are — you refuse to take your chances.

“Hi.” You mutter stiffly.

He slides into the seat beside you. His friends follow in suit, still grinning, still making you uneasy.

“Come ‘round here often?” He asks.

“Yeah. With my boyfriend.”

“Oh, you’re tied down, huh?” He cackles at that.

“Uhm, yeah. He’s real sweet to me, you make it sound like it’s against my will.”

The boy and his buddies laugh loudly, all punching and joking with one another at your expense. You’re glad Ponyboy isn’t like them. He’s kind and respectable. There’s a reason he’s your boyfriend.

“I’m sure he is, doll. Say, what’d it take for—”

“What the hell are you idiots doin’ here?” An angry, familiar voice booms.

Your eyes lock onto Ponyboy, standing ten feet away, sodas, popcorn, and candy in hand, looking utterly furious. The other guys quiet down. They make the connection quickly, that he’s the boyfriend you previously mentioned.

“So, this is your boyfriend?” The boy with the beer drawls.

“Ponyboy Curtis, why didn’t ya tell me about ‘yer girlfriend?!” One of them — blonde, tall, dressed in a work uniform — yells loudly.

You look between them, confused.

“Pony, how does he know your—”

Your boyfriend mutters something, now staring at his feet, clearly embarrassed.

“What?”

They’re my friends.

Shock covers your face.

“The ones I told you all about. Johnny, Dally, Two-Bit, Sodapop, Steve…” He gestures to each boy, and suddenly, all the dots connect. You’ve heard so much about these boys from Ponyboy; a mix of frustration and admiration towards all of them.

A smile graces your features.

Ponyboy takes his seat next to you, and instead of spending the duration of the movie wrapped up in one another, you’re wrapped up in conversation with his best friends. Not exactly how he wanted evening to go.

── .✦ a/n ~ holy crap this is long af

APRIL 25TH, 1965

As Johnny laid in his hospital bed, he thought about the events of the last week and a half.

He stabbed a boy. That boy somehow survived. Him and his best friend went on the run. They saved a bunch of kids from a fire. He got third degree burns on his arms and neck. He got stuck in a hospital.

He felt useless. Ugly. Like a monster.

In a week, once he recovered, he’d go to court.

The jury, much to his surprise, decided that he had “gone through enough,” and would only deserve a couple years of community service.

The Socs would fight, be angry. He deserves life in prison, they’d protest. You’re basically letting him walk free. His buddies would celebrate. They’d get a cake for him, Dally, and Pony. The greasers would see it as a life-long win.

But the emptiness in Johnny’s heart wouldn’t fill. He should be happy, but all he feels is hopelessness. He nearly killed someone and is getting slap on the wrist.

From that day forward, he vows to never hurt another human being ever again.

NOVEMBER 29TH, 1970

He first saw you in a bar. Not the best place to meet a woman.

But you were beautiful. He couldn’t help but stare, watching the way your eyes crinkled into a smile as you laughed at a friend’s joke.

Dally caught him staring.

“Got the hots for that chick, huh?” He drawled with an impish grin.

“Shut up, man. She’s jus’ pretty.” Johnny replied as he elbowed Dally.

“Go talk to ‘er! 50/50 chance she’s single, you’re a handsome man; the only thing you can lose is your freedom.”

Johnny shook his head.

As the night dragged on and the alcohol he was drinking loosened his nerves, he found himself strutting over to where you and your friend sat. He smirked as he leaned against the table by you, eyes practically forming hearts as he spoke to you.

“You come around here often?” He said, trying to sound smooth.

You turned to him, lips quirking into a smug little smile.

“Yes, actually.”

Johnny stared at you, which is when it occurred to him that he didn't know what exactly to say back to you.

“Look, I didn’t really have a plan going into this. Can I just ask you out on a date?”

He was surprised when you laughed at him, but not a mean laugh, an ‘I think you’re a cute idiot’ laugh.

“Yeah, why not.”

OCTOBER 3RD, 1971

You lingered outside the diner, dressed in the best clothes you owned — which wasn’t saying much, considering it was just a pair of bellbottom jeans and a long-sleeved blouse — waiting for Johnny Cade.

You’d spent the rest of your night at the bar talking to him, laughing with him, he even walked you home! He was a sweet guy; sure, he’s got a past, but who doesn’t in Tulsa? Everyone has done something they’d rather forget.

“Hey!”

At the sound of his voice, you turned, smiling as he walked up to you. He, just as he was at the bar, was clad in a denim-on-denim getup. Cute.

“Ready?”

“As I’ll ever be.”

You looped your arm around his as you stepped into the diner. Nowadays, it’d be seen as outdated. You thought it was charming.

The pair of you sat down at your booth, quickly glancing at the menu for something to order. You could tell Johnny was nervous, with the way he was fidgeting. This behavior lingered on as you ordered and got your food.

When he finished his fries, you couldn’t help asking: “Wanna get out of here?”

He perked up at that. A smile formed on his lips.

“Yeah.”

With that final declaration, he left $20 on the table, with “keep the change” scribbled onto a napkin, and you two scurried off.

FEBRUARY 1ST, 1972

As Johnny walked the streets of Tulsa, your hand intwined with his scarred one, he couldn’t help reminiscing about his past.

He saw the lot he spent far too many nights sleeping in. The old drugstore. The park where it happened. The diner where you and him had your first date.

A year had passed since then; since you’d made it official. In that year, he’d met your parents, you’d met his friends, and he finally felt as though things were going his way. He got a steady job, a wonderful lady by his side, which was everything he could ever want.

“I really love you, y’know.” He murmured.

You laughed softly.

“I love you too, J.” Your hand squeezed his.

He pressed a kiss to the side of your head, as you came upon the Curtis’ house.

His knuckles rapped on the door, but he didn’t bother waiting for a ‘come in.’ He never did. He stepped inside with you on his arm, surprised to see all of his buddies there. Even Ponyboy, who should have been at University.

“Happy Anniversary to the first of us to get tied down!” Two-Bit exclaimed dramatically.

You giggled at that, already used to their antics.

Johnny just grinned, knowing that would be the first of many anniversaries.

NOVEMBER 19TH, 1977

Six years. For six long, beautiful years, you and Johnny Cade had been dating.

It was nothing short of amazing — full of ups and downs, sure — but he made it worth it infinite times over. You didn’t know what you’d be doing without him. You had a home together, a life together. It was perfect.

“Hey, do you wanna go for a drive?” He asked you suddenly one afternoon.

You glanced up from where you were doing the dishes, lips curving up.

“Yeah. Haven’t done that in a while, huh?”

“We can leave the dishes. Go right now.”

“What’s got you so eager?” You joked, as he smiled and turned off the faucet, taking your hand in his. You two left the apartment, laughing together, stepping onto the driveway amd hopping into Johnny’s car.

It wasn’t long before you stopped somewhere quiet. You sat in the back together, legs pressed to one another, taking in each other’s closeness and warmth. You’d spent many nights like this before, basking in the mere presence of your lover.

He was messing with your fingers when he popped the question.

“Do you wanna get married?”

It was hardly a whisper, yet it made your heart stutter.

“What?” You choked out.

“Do you want to get married? Y’know, for real.” His voice was so soft.

You paused, staring at him, thinking over the last six and a half years of your life. It was nothing but joyous; it filled your brain with memories you’ll forever keep close. Nights playing board games with the gang, special dinners at the Curtis house, purchasing a house for just the two of you.

There was only one clear answer to his question.

“Yes. Yes, of course.”

SEPTEMBER 22ND, 1978

Johnny felt as though he would sweat out of his socks, despite the cold autumnal breeze flowing through the open window.

“Man, I— what if she says no? What if she regrets it?” He vented to Dallas, who was tying his tie around his neck.

“Jesus Christ, Johnny would ‘ya calm down?” He snapped back.

“I’m sorry, I just,” Johnny paused. “I wouldn’t be able to handle it if she said no or something. I don’t know what I’d do without her.”

Dallas Winston, for once in his life, went silent. Didn't give a snappy reply, didn't roll his eyes. Just looked up. Johnny stared back at his best friend — his best man — as his eyes searched for some kind of sincerity.

“Johnny, I’m going to be serious, which I never am, so you better listen to me.” Dally began. "That girl is head over heels for you. There is no other man on this Earth besides you who could be a better fit for her, I’m sure of that."

Johnny stared at him, eyes welling with un-shed tears. He crushed him into a bear hug.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t mention it. Now, you 'oughta go get married.” Dally drew back with one final pat to his back, before shoving him out of the room they’d been in and out to where the ceremony was being held: in your backyard. You couldn’t afford much else, and besides, you and him both preferred it being more intimate.

Johnny stepped up to the ‘alter,’ looking out at the people before him. To his left stood Dally, alongside Ponyboy, Steve, Soda, and Two-bit. To his right stood Darry, who got a marriage license for the sake of you two.

The crowd was made up of mostly your family; your parents, siblings, grandparents, some aunts and uncles. Darry’s own Wife and some of the guys’ girlfriends were also there.

Then the music began. Everyone rose from their seats.

One by one, your own best friends and bridesmaids stepped out. They took their places by the alter.

Then you came out.

Dressed in the most beautiful white gown, holding a bouquet of your favorite flowers, looking as radiant as ever.

Johnny almost immediately began bawling.

For the next hour, you said your vows, cried plenty, slipped your rings onto each other’s hands, and were officially married.

It was the happiest day of you and Johnny’s lives. That hole in his heart was finally full.

The reception was a blur of dancing, loud music, and drinking. You and Johnny found yourselves not caring about much aside from the fact that you were married.

Most of the night went forgotten, aside from the one thing that would stick with you for the rest of your lives:

The revelation that, now, officially, you were Johnny’s, and he was yours. Forever, always, and — according to your dutiful vows — until the seas were drained, until the stars fell from the sky, until the day you die.

I adore your writing and i just HAD to send in an order!

Soooo could i get a hamburger with cheese with Ponyboy please! 🫶🏻

── .✦ a/n ~ highkey me... :3

Ponyboy has always loved to write. You know this for a fact. Every time one the guys’ birthdays comes around, he writes entire page long letters to them. Johnny’s ended up being three pages.

Then your birthday came along. The first since you two finally started dating.

You were in your kitchen, guarded by your mom, dad, and siblings, when he handed you an envelope. You smiled sheepishly at him, before taking the note from his hands. His gaze was locked onto you as you opened it, finding a nearly seven page — front to back — letter addressed to you.

You sat there and spent twenty minutes silently reading it. By the time you’d finished it, your ice-cream cake was just about melted. But you read every little word with purpose.

When you finished, you looked right back to him, eyes wide, not knowing what to say.

“Ponyboy.” you murmured.

You jumped up from your seat to hug him, arms tight around his neck. He buried his flushed face into your shoulder.

Months have passed since then. You’re coming upon your two-year anniversary — a massive milestone.

One summer day, you arrived at the Curtis’ to hang out with him. Turns out he was at track practice. Soda let you in anyways, so you got the chance to sit around his room. Why not do some snooping?

First you checked out his desk. It was littered with papers, all smudged and crumpled. You got a closer look, seeing the words scribbled on them, smiling. Pony was always a perfectionist.

Then you went for his closet. It was full off flannels, most from Soda, t-shirts, and only one other pair of scuffed jeans.

Finally, you spotted something.

Peaking out from under his bed, a box with its lid halfway on it sang your name. So, naturally, you immediately grabbed it and sat on his unmade bed.

In it, you found pieces of papers. Tons of them. Each was covered in words, each with a date, each with a title. Said titles ranged from something cheesy like “what it is to love,” or something softer, like “her.”

As you picked certain poems out, you read through them, quickly realizing his muse.

You.

Almost every paper in that box was something he’d wrote about you. He wrote about your hair, your eyes, the way your laugh sounded like a bird’s song to him. You clung to every word, spending the better part of three hours meticulously reading each one.

The dates lead all the way back to before you got together. Back to the months where you believed the crush you harbored wasn’t reciprocated.

At the bottom of the box lay a notebook — brown, leather, and with a gold leaf tree on the front cover. You didn’t hesitate to open it, finding a journal entry from when the pair of you were twelve.

“September 3rd, 1963. Today was my first day of seventh grade. Darry told me I should start writing stuff down. Said it helped him when he was my age. I don’t know why I listened to him, he’s not my dad or anything. At least I get to sit by a pretty girl in math. I don’t know her name but I don’t need to. She’s really nice and has a pink notebook.”

You remember distinctly when this happened. Sitting by each other in that class was the best thing to ever happen to you, because it led to you and Pony’s friendship and subsequent relationship. You flip through the pages, finding an entry from a handful of months before you got together.

“January 7th, 1965. She’s so pretty. We just got back from winter break, and now I get to see her everyday again in P.E. She manages to make the scratchy gym shirts cute. Is that weird to say? I hope it isn’t. I hope she never reads this and thinks I’m a creep.”

The statement is ironic, but you’re more focused on his infatuation with you. You didn’t think he liked you for so long before you got together. Then again, the gang probably didn’t tease you constantly for nothing.

You flip forward, finding the exact date he first asked you out.

“August 29th 1965. I did it. I asked her out. I bought her flowers, showed up at her doorstep, and told her I really liked her and wanted to take her out on a date. She said yes! She even hugged me and kissed my cheek. She kissed me! Can you believe it? I hadn’t even gotten the chance to properly take her out before she kissed me!! I’m so lucky. She’s so beautiful. We’re going to the drive-in together this Saturday. Just us.”

He was so cute that day. His entire face was flushed — especially his ears — and you couldn’t help yourself. You keep looking through the pages, finding the one from the actual date.

“August 31st, 1965. She kissed me. For real this time. She put her hand on my cheek and kissed me on my mouth. I had to keep myself from devouring her whole in that moment. I didn’t want to seem eager. She tasted real good, like—”

“W-What the hell are you doing?!”

You hear Ponyboy’s voice squeak. Your head shoots up, eyes meeting his, and you can’t help smiling.

“Nothing.”

“You—! Give me that!” He lunges, tackling you on the bed in an attempt to reach for his notebook. You grin wider. He tries so hard to get it back, climbing on top of you, but you somehow keep it barely out of his grasp. He looms above you, not wanting you to read his cheesy confessions about you. But you’ve read too much already.

“You are so—” You cut him off with a kiss. That’s all it takes for him to deflate, now sitting atop you on his bed.

“You’re cute when you blush.”

He doesn’t have anything to say to that. Instead, he leans in, lips crashing into yours. This time around, he’s plenty eager, having lost the ability to hold back with you long ago. His lips mold to yours, tongue quickly attempting to get entry into your mouth.

The journal is long forgotten. Your hands hold his jaw as his find your hips.

He tastes so sweet, always like apples, and you can’t get enough of him. The kiss is all tongues and teeth, desperate, but in a loving way, not lustful.

Your lips break apart, his kisses trailing down your neck, stopping to linger on your jaw, when—

“You kids better not be gettin’ it on in there! I hope you know we can hear y’all huffin’ and puffin’!”

You hear Soda’s voice echo from the kitchen.

You look at Ponyboy, giggling as he gets up to slam the door.

hiii! could i have a slice of apple pie (if it’s not too much to ask for..) for darry curtis? and can the jukebox play “somethin’ stupid”? thank you so much and take your time!!!!

warnings ~ all fluff, cheesy confessions, darry getting the love he deserves, madly in love darry, best friends to lovers

── .✦ a/n ~ frank sinatra ily

You are Darry Curtis’ best friend.

You met one day on the playground as children; before you knew what a “greaser” or “Soc was, before the fights and rumbles. Back then, it was just you two against the world.

It still is now.

Even after the death of his parents, even after the threat of them being in worse poverty than before. You’ve stuck by his side through it all. When he needs a shoulder to cry on, or a pair of ears to rant out his frustrations to, you’re there.

You don’t know what you’d do without him and he doesn’t know what he’d do without you.

More often than not, he’s over exhausted by the end of the day. His routine has been the same for the past handful of months: get up, eat breakfast, go to work, come home from work, eat dinner, clean up after Pony, Soda, and the gang, go to sleep, repeat. He doesn’t have much time for leisure. You can tell he misses his hobbies.

So, you’ve arranged something special for him.

After he went off to work, you swing by their house to discuss this plan with Pony and Soda.

“Alrighty, boys! I’ve got a big favor for the two of you.” You announce as you burst in through the front door.

The two brothers looked startled out of the socks, barely awake and half falling asleep into their bowls of cereal. Despite it being summer, they still seemed so tired.

“What is your problem? Can’t even knock?” Soda says with a grumble.

“Nope! You’ve got a big day, kid.” You ruffle his hair.

You take a seat at the head of the table, grabbing the newspaper distracting Soda and grabbing their attention.

“Your older brother is very dear to all of us, correct? And he hasn’t had a day off in a long time…” You watch them as they nod along. “So, today, I need you to be on your best behavior, we’ve got a lot to do. I’m talking deep cleaning the house, making dinner, all that jazz.”

“What?! It’s summer break, I don’t wanna do that!”

“Too bad, Ponyboy! If you were in Darry’s shoes, you wouldn’t be complaining!” He shuts up at that. “He’s gettin’ off early today, my treat. I want him to have a nice afternoon.”

The two boys groan, but don’t refuse. They finish their breakfasts silently, and after getting dressed, are at your every command.

As the day drags out, the house transforms itself. Pony and Soda clean their asses off, and as the other guys show up, they do too. By the time you’re starting dinner with Steve and Johnny, the house is spotless.

You allow the boys some relaxation for their work, but it isn’t long before they’re setting the table and helping in the making of dinner. You’re honestly really proud.

Soon, Darry’s truck is pulling into the driveway, three hours early, at three in the afternoon.

You watch through the window as he steps up to the porch, opens the door, and enters a house that is the cleanest it’s been in years.

“Holy…”

“It’s nice, right?” Your voice chirps as you step out from in the kitchen. Your sleeves are rolled up to your elbows, there’s remnants of flour on your hands, and it’s clear you’ve been in the kitchen.

Darry steps further into the living room, marveling at the lack of. dust and trash and cigarette butts.

“I don’t think this place has been this clean in months.” He turns and smiles at you.

“All in a day’s work. C’mon, I’ve got a surprise for you.” You grab his wrist and lead him into the kitchen, where Dallas, Steve, Two-Bit, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Sodapop are all yelling, arguing over each other and being terrible chefs.

But at his place at the dinner table sits a large meal — a plate of steak, with a side of mashed potatoes, and a dinner roll. It’s cooked exactly the way he likes it. In a nearby glass is his beverage of choice, milk, and a plate of cookies. The rest of the table is cluttered with other foods, all home-cooked.

Darry stares in awe, eyes wide, lips parted in a silent gasp. He’s never seen anything like this. When he turns to you and smiles, your own widens into a grin.

“Do you like it?” You ask.

“Like it? I— I love it.” He smiles at the boys littered around the kitchen. “Really. Nobody’s ever done anything like this for me.”

You can see the way his eyes light up, the tears he hides because he can’t let his brothers see him like this. You don’t point it out, just wrap your arms around him tightly. He returns your hug, hands gripping your hips and face pressing into your neck. It isn’t long before Soda’s practically tackling him to the ground. All six of the others wrap themselves around the two of you.

You’ve never felt more loved. Neither has Darry.

“Alright, everybody, enough! Let’s get some food in our bellies, yeah?” You announce as you pull back.

The boys all cheer, each of them rushing to grab plates and serve themselves. You watch Darry take his seat and begin eating. He’s half laughing at their antics.

Soon, everyone has found their places. You, Ponyboy, and Soda take your seats at the table, while the others lean against cabinets and sit on counters. Everyone is digging in, and for once, you feel like a real family. A big, messy family — but a loving one at that.

Loud snores echo throughout the otherwise quiet house. The dishes rest in the sink, to be washed in the morning, while the exhausted gang sleep in various positions around the house.

You and Darry stare at the scene with soft smiles.

“How hard did you work them?” He asks with a chuckle.

“Not much. Unless you call doing laundry and making dinner a laborious task?” You laugh at your own joke with a shake of your head. “They’ll be out the rest of the night.”

Darry turns to you, expression gentle.

“You wanna go for a drive?”

You look to him, eyes lighting up. The pair of you haven’t gone on a drive in months, hell, maybe not since you graduated. It used to be an annual thing. Every weekend, without fail, you’d get in his truck, and just drive. Now, it’s a mere memory.

“Yeah. I’d love to.”

You grab onto his hand, giggling as you drag him out of the house and towards his truck — exactly how you did the last time.

He opens the passenger door for you, before getting into the driver’s seat. Once you’ve both buckled, he pulls out of the driveway and you’re off.

The scenery hasn’t changed at all.

As you drive the same route you always did, you watch out for specific landmarks. That run-down, barely operating dairy farm. The old train tracks. That rotten tree that could have once been perfect for a tree house.

And then you pull up to your favorite spot.

You sit atop a large hill, akin to a mountain, but not quite. Before you stands the most beautiful, nostalgic sight you love to see. The sun has begun to set, casting a golden hue across the valley, and you find yourself in the same position you always end up in: sitting on top of Darry’s truck, looking out across the area together.

It’s silent, aside from the faint music coming from the radio. A Frank Sinatra song, one you’re not familiar with.

You stare out at the vastness before you, a small plastered onto your face.

But Darry finds himself staring elsewhere. At you.

He stares at the slope of your nose, at the. He stares at your hair as the breeze brushes against it and your perfume wafts into his nose. His gaze travels to the swell of your lips. Suddenly, he can’t keep his mouth shut. The words he’s refrained from saying for years now bubble over, unable to be kept at bay, his confession shattering the easy silence.

“I love you.”

They’re out before he can stop himself. You turn to him, expression fallen, and his heart sinks to his feet. He’s ruined it. He’s ruined the best friendship he’s ever had.

“I-I, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I’ll— I can bring you home now, I—”

“I love you, too.”

He stops. His jaw opens and closes, now at a loss for words.

“I— pardon?”

“I said I love you. I always have.”

Your face — Christ, your face — is so very full of adoration. A smile paints your lips, your eyes crinkling with joy. His own mouth curves into an involuntary grin.

“Really?” He can’t help asking.

“Yes, really.”

His gaze flickers down. So does yours. And at the same time, you lean in, acting upon innate desires that hadn’t come to fruition until right now. Your lips meet, and it’s as though fireworks have exploded in his stomach.

Darry had dreamed of this, of feeling your lips on his own, but his imagination could never compare to the real thing.

Your lips are soft, gentle, moving against his with the care that you pour into everything. His hands find your jaw, tilting your head as he deepens the kiss. A low groan escapes him when your fingers sink into his hair.

When you finally pull away, you’re both panting, but also grinning.

“It only took you four years.” You joke with a laugh.

“Oh, shut it! I’ll make it up to you,” He leans back in, and you can’t seem to deny him.

You stay like that for a while, wrapped up in each other. The following morning, the gang will enter his room to wake him up, only to find the pair of you tangled up together. They’ll yell, gasp, scream, but you two won’t care. They knew it was a long time coming anyways.

But for now, it’s only you, him, and the spot where you first realized you loved him in the first place.

Dallas Winston doesn’t do “compliments.”

He doesn’t take them, nor give them. People don’t need to remind him how handsome he is, or whether or not he’s a dick. He knows it. And he sure as hell doesn’t tell anyone how good they are. Nobody needs that big of an ego (except himself).

That is, until you.

You were sweet. So, so sweet. You didn’t need a reminder. Or, you shouldn’t have needed a reminder.

But, clearly, Dally also doesn’t do relationships either. At least not well.

He didn’t think his lack of verbal reassurance was a big deal, until you brought it up — at the drive-in, no less. He’d been anticipating seeing a half decent movie, not getting a lecture.

“Hey, Dal.” You asked tentatively one night. Your head lays comfortably on his shoulder, his arm resting on the chair behind you.

“What’s up, doll?”

“Why don’t you ever tell me you think I’m pretty?”

He pauses.

What?

“Dollface, y’already know yer pretty. I don’t needa spend every moment tellin’ ya.” He laughs.

You don’t seem as amused.

“You’re not funny, Dally.” Your eyebrows crinkle, your disappointment shifting to frustration at his behavior.

“I tell you all the time how handsome you are, how you’re cool and tuff." He scoffs. “Dallas, it’s not funny! That’s one of the, like, most basic things you can do for me!”

“Alright, alright, damn. Jus’ didn’t think you’d need to be told over and over how cute y’are.”

“It isn’t about the compliment itself. It’s about you showing me that you actually care, that I’m not just a warm body. We’ve been datin’ five months, Dallas. This should be serious.”

Hearing the way you’re pleading, he sighs, putting his cigarette out and turning to fine you.

“Fine. What do ‘ya want me to say?”

“Just… tell me I’m pretty.” You say. “If I’m tryin’ on dresses, or shoes, or sweaters, tell me how I look in them instead of saying ‘they’re all fine, just pick one.’ If I’m wearing a new perfume, and you notice, tell me I smell good. ‘S easy.”

Dallas, for once, is a little speechless. He purses his ips, now regretting putting out his cancer stick, before replying.

“Okay. I guess I’ll try.”

“Thank you, Dally!” You press an excited kiss to his cheek.

“Yeah, yeah, doll, don’t get too used to me bein’ nice.

You giggle at his antics, before wrapping an arm around his and settling in the for the rest of the movie, knowing he’s blissfully unaware of the lipstick mark you’d left him him, which he’ll surely notice later and get all pissy about.

But for now, he’s all yours.

── .✦ a/n ~ may this event be your guys' reminder that i love reqs and theyre almost always open esp with it being summer!!!!!!!!!

You weren't very picky with your men — that much was clear.

He didn’t need to be rich, he didn’t need to gallant, he just had to make you feel loved. However, it wasn’t something that often came up in conversation when you were with the gang. They’re all guys, you talk about that kinda thing with you girlfriends.

That is, until a certain summer night.

“Man, why’re all these broads so picky?” Dallas Winston blurted into the silence of the Curtis’ backyard.

Everyone had gathered in their yard, showing up one by one with various foods for a barbecue and bonfire. Two-Bit brought the ingredients for s’mores, Johnny brought chips, Steve brought drinks, and Dallas — of course — brought several stolen packs of cigarettes.

You’d been sitting around the fire next to Ponyboy when Dally had made his comments about supposedly “picky broads.” You, technically being a broad, can’t help but speak up.

“I mean, I wouldn’t consider myself picky. I don’t mind your attitude. Most ladies probably just know you’ve got a reputation.” You say.

“Nah, man, they just can’t handle all ‘a me.”

“Tell yourself that, Dally.”

You don’t think much of the comment you made. It’s true, you don’t mind Dally’s personality. That’s mostly due to the fact that you’ve known him a while and see past his exterior, but still. Other dames just see him as a sleazebag.

It isn’t until late into the night, when the gang is all gathered around the fire, laughing and telling stupid jokes, that something comes to you.

You glance across the area, eyes locking onto Dally telling some stupid joke, his lips curved into that signature devilish grin, and something flickers inside you.

Suddenly, a flame flickers to life in your stomach — slow and smooth , just a small light in the darkness — and a thought comes alongside it: why don’t I mind Dally’s attitude, and why do I wish he didn’t talk about other girls?

This thought lingers long into the night.

You lay in bed, letting your imagination run wild. You picture what it’d be like to be his, what he’d be like as a boyfriend. You’re incredibly aware that you’re making a lot of this up. He isn’t a good guy; he cheats, he’s mean, he probably wouldn’t be able to give you what you need in a relationship.

But that doesn’t stop you from dreaming.

And you’ve never been a quitter, anyways.

“Y’know, you’re like the prettiest boy I’ve ever met,” You drawl, fingers playing with the straw attached to your milkshake.

Before you sits the one and only Johnny Cade, in all his glory. You watch his cheeks heat up at your comment, his hand coming to scratch at his neck as it usually does when he’s flustered. He glances away, before looking back at you and meeting your eyes.

“An’ you’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever met.” He confesses.

You grin, finding his bashful demeanor cute.

You sip on your drink, chewing the straw as you think.

“So,” you pause. “Have y’told your friends about us yet?”

He visibly stiffens at that.

You know he isn’t ashamed of you, he’s said so himself too many times for you to doubt that, and yet he still hasn’t told all his buddies that he’s dating you, a girl they’ve met about a million times.

“I just,” he huffs, takes a bite of his food, and then continues. “I don’t want them to bother you about it. I can take them doggin’ on me just fine, but I don’t want it to turn into them bein’ annoying and weird anytime you’re around.”

Your lips curve into a grin. He may not always lead one to believe it, but he’s the most caring boy you’ve ever met.

“Johnny Cade, you’re one hell of a man,” you tease.

He once again blushes, the heat traveling down his neck and over his ears. You giggle at that. He’s just so cute when he’s flushed — his whole ‘tough’ persona crumbles. You lean into him, and your lips just barely connect when—

“Oh my days, is that Johnathan Cade?!”

You hear Keith “Two-Bit” Matthews’ familiar, taunting voice boom throughout the otherwise quiet diner.

“Shit, it is! See, I told you we saw ‘im in the window!” Sodapop hollers.

You whip your head around at the sound, getting met with the sight of the entire gang — Dallas, Soda, Steve, Pony, Two-Bit — whooping and yelling as they enter the diner.

Goddamnit.

You jump away from Johnny, shock painting both of your faces as the group of boys crams themselves into the small booth.

“So when were ‘ya gonna tell us ‘bout yer doll here, Cade?” Dally murmurs, smirking as he puts out his cigarette.

“I, uhm—”

“Yeah, you never told us you were datin’ her!” Pony cuts in.

Soon, everyone is speaking over everyone, not letting you or Johnny get a word out to explain yourselves. But through all this, you give him a look, the kind that says “This is worth it. They’re our family, too.”

And suddenly, it’s not so bad.

aka… johnny cade being exceptionally close at all times

warnings ~ tbd
w/c ~ tbd

── .✦ a/n ~ lowk miss writing for him... might have to rewatch/read the outsiders and bring them back...

Johnny Cade didn’t show his love in conventional ways. At least, not on the regular. Sure, he did still save up to buy little gifts, greet you with kisses, and hold your hand, the way affection came to him naturally was different.

He’d simply linger.

If the pair of you were on a walk together and you ran into a friend, he would stand right by your side, arms touching, his hand close to yours, his breath grazing your ear.

You didn’t notice it until you had been dating for two solid months.

He definitely wasn’t one for PDA. It wasn’t even a pride thing, he just said it made him feel like he was being watched. What he did enjoy, however — in private, of course — was being close. He’d lay his head on your chest, curl into you, and play with your fingers on one hand as the other combed through his freshly washed hair, all while a movie played in the background.

So, whenever his friends are around, and you’re at his side, the thing he always ends up doing is standing incredibly close to you.

If you’re standing, he lurks behind you, often silent. When his friends come into the picture, trying to talk to him, he keeps a grip on your belt loop so you stay near.

If you’re sitting on the couch, he sits right beside you, ensuring your thighs and shoulders are touching.

Whenever you can be, you’re both touching.

Truthfully, it’s one of your favorite things about him. He doesn’t need your love to be loud, out there, he just needs it to be yours.

w/c ~ 1300+

── .✦ a/n ~ i need to not make these so long jesus christ

525,600 minutes.

8,760 hours,

365 days.

One year.

That’s how long you’ve been dating Johnny Cade.

One magnificent, perfect year.

But today would turn out to be the opposite of the past year.

Your morning had been fine. You did your hair, spent extra time doing your makeup, ate a healthy breakfast, and even read a little bit. It was quite nice!

Which was the universe’s cue that everything had to go wrong.

It began when Johnny hadn’t shown up to pick you up from your house. You’d talked to him about going to the diner where you first met for your anniversary for weeks now. Though, come to think of it, he never did say he’d pick you up.

It’s fine, you tell yourself. He’ll be there waiting.

So, you started walking.

It wasn’t uncommon for you to walk places — most often with Johnny in tow — so you weren’t too bothered. You passed by the local drugstore on the way, and in the window you spot a darling little plush dog. You’re well aware Johnny isn’t much of a gift-taker, but he deserves special treatment, especially on your anniversary.

You step inside, kitten heels clicking on the tile floors, and reach for the stuffed dog immediately. Of course, you grab a handful of other things, like his favorite cigarettes and that candy he likes, before paying for that and a bag to put them in.

Then, gift in hand, you’re on your merry way to the diner.

Your arrival sparks more fear into your stomach, for you come to find Johnny is nowhere to be seen. He isn’t at your usual booth, nor anywhere else.

Gnawing at your freshly painted fingernails, you capture the attention of one of the waitresses.

“Excuse me, ma’am!” You sputter.

“Yes, what’s wrong, dear?” The older woman drawls.

“Uhm, has a boy come in here at all today? Shaggy brown hair, tan skin, always wears denim-on-denim?” You question.

She shakes her head. “Not as far as I’m aware. A boyfriend, I presume?” You nod at that.

“It’s our anniversary.”

“Oh, you poor doll! Well, if the asshole managed to forget, I’ll buy ‘ya somethin’. A girl like you deserves that kinda treatment.”

You smile at her hospitality, but your mind naturally snags on one word: forget.

What if Johnny forgot?

You swallow hard.

“Thank you, ma’am, I really appreciate it.”

“Anytime, doll.”

With that, you scurry off, darting out of the diner and onto the street.

As you make your way in the direction of the lot, you wonder if Johnny forgot, and how. It’s your anniversary — one year at that! How could he ever forget? Even worse, what if he got jumped again and now has better things to worry about?! That thought makes you pick up the pace.

But when you make it to the lot, he isn’t there. Not even Ponyboy or his other pals.

You rush down the street, towards the Curtis residence. If he isn’t at the lot, he’s there. You’re confident about that.

You hustle across the street and to the Curtis’, anxiety taking over. All you can think about, as you step up to the door and swing it open, is if he’s hurt, if something happened, if he needed you—

You’re met with the sight of him on the floor, playing cards with his buddies.

And he’s perfectly fine.

The room stills, silence taking over the typically rowdy area. Pony, Dallas, and Johnny all look up from their cards. Darry perks up from his spot in his recliner. Soda and Steve pause their game of rock paper scissors. Two-Bit peaks his head in from the kitchen.

“Hey, Johnny, the missus is here!” The aforementioned boy yelps.

“Yeah, I can see that.” The dark haired boy rises to his feet and approaches. “How’re you, doll? I haven’t seen you all day.”

You flinch aware from him.

You’ve spent your entire day worrying about him, wondering if the reason why he missed your anniversary was because he was hurt or something. But no. He’s been slumming around with his stupid friends.

“Do you have any idea—” You blink the tears out of your eyes as you look up. “— what today is, Johnny Cade?”

He pauses, expression falling. “What?”

“Do you know what the date is?”

“July 22nd, why?”

You stare up at him, utterly incredulous. Does he really not get it?

“Do you remember what happened a year ago today? What important event took place?”

You watch the gears in his head turn. Then, it all clicks.

“Oh! Yeah, that’s when I first asked you out, right?”

Something inside you snaps.

“I have spent the entire day worrying about you! I woke up, so excited for our date — for our anniversary — and was scared out of my mind when I couldn’t find you anywhere!”

You step closer to him. Anger flares in your eyes, which is clear enough, but it masks the hurt. The intense hurt that burns in your chest.

“But it was all for nothing, because you turned out to just be sleazin’ around with you idiot friends!” Your one hand wipes at your tears. The other grasps the locket around your neck, the one he gifted you.

“You can keep your stupid necklace—” you rip it off and shove it into his chest.

“You can keep your stupid gifts I bought you—” you shove the bag into his hands.

“Keep it all, I don’t care!”

Tears run freely down your cheeks now. You glance around the stale room, taking in the shocked looks among his friends’ faces. He deserves the humiliation, you think, as you storm out of the house, slamming the door behind you.

“Wow, Johnny. You fucked up bad, man. Worse than me.” Dallas quips from his spot on the floor.

Johnny just stands there, dumbfounded. Did you just leave him? Is it over?

It suddenly occurs to him that you will leave him — for real, forever — if he doesn’t at least try and explain himself. So so, too, storms out of the house, calling your name.

“Wait! Sweetheart, wait up!” He watches your figure rushing away from him. With his long, lanky legs, it isn’t long before he’s right behind you.

“Talk to me! What can I do to fix this?” He pleads.

“You can start by gettin’ the hell away from me.” You snap back.

Johnny stops. Then, he grabs your wrist. You stop in your tracks, turning to look at him, ready to backhand him across the face, when you see the look in his eyes.

Pure, unbridled pain.

“Please,” He begs. “I-I don’t really know how relationships work. I didn’t know anniversaries were that important.” His hand slips into yours, and you don’t pull back.

Your mind flickers to his parents. He grew up in a home without love, of course he doesn’t understand what they truly mean.

You take a deep breath. Glance away. When you look back, tears still roll down your cheeks, but you have enough composure to speak.

“Well, for starters, you can remember our anniversary. We’ve been dating a year, Johnny! Doncha’ see how amazing that is?” You stare up at him, watching the way he begins to understand things. “Second, you can show up for things I spent a week blabbering about.”

Johnny knows that’s entirely his fault. You did spend a week talking about going on a date at the diner, on this specific day. He should have showed up.

“Right. ‘M sorry, I promise I’ll do better next year.”

The way he says that, broken, begging, makes your heart stutter. That, and the fact he said ‘next year.’ Not next time, next year.

“I wouldn’t expect anything less.”

His hands come up, cupping your cheeks and wiping away stray tears. His gaze moves to your lips. He doesn’t need to ask, for you lean in instead, capturing his lips in a salty sweet kiss. He kisses right back, his desperation showing in the way he holds you.

“You know I love you, Johnny?” You murmur when you pull away.

“Yeah. I do, too.”

#1 - the street

This was the first time he’d ever seen you: glowing, sparkling, shining like the sun and carrying yourself with the confidence that most lacked. You were utterly magnificent. He'd nearly stopped in his tracks just to get an extra look at you.

"Hey, uh, johnny... you good?" Ponyboy mutters beside him, nudging him with his elbow to get his attention.

Johnny looks away, but not before getting one final glance at your -- clad in your frilly dress and lacy socks – and sighing to himself.

Little did he know, that one look was just the beginning for him; the beginning of his life being absolutely consumed by just you.

#2 - the hallway

From that moment on, he'd see you in anything he could. The strawberry milkshakes from the dingo, the cheap jewelry from gas stations, the pretty pink flowers in people's yards. He saw you everywhere.

Then, he saw you in the hallways.

Not something similar to you, not someone with the same confidence as you, but you. Real, in the flesh, and equally as enthralling. And you were walking straight towards him.

"Hey, uhm, you're Johnny Cade, right?" You asked, a small smile gracing your glossed lips. God, you were beautiful.

"Uh... yeah. That's me." He must look like a weirdo... why were you talking to him? But somehow, you eyes lit up.

"I, uhm... I wanted to see if you'd like to catch a movie sometime? Only if you'd wanna, though..."

Holy. Shit.

"I..." Say something, goddamnit!

"I would like that." He can feel his hands shaking, his heart pounding in his chest violently.

Then, that sickly sweet smile appears on your lips, and his anxieties ease. "Perfect! I'll see you Saturday, then?"

"Uhm. Yeah. Yeah, you will."

Your smile somehow manages to widen, eyes twinkling with excitement. Johnny watches you walk down the hallway, curls bouncing, and feel his heartbeat quicken once again.

#3 - the dinner

You and Johnny have officially been dating for six months. And because of that, the inevitable has needed to take place:

Meeting your parents. Your Soc parents.

He'd done his best to make himself presentable; did his hair without any grease, borrowed Buck's T-bird, and even managed to wash his clothes and ''borrow'' some of Darry's cologne.

All for you.

When he arrived at your front door, he'd been sweating like crazy. Your favorite flowers in hand, he rings the doorbell.

The moment your face appears before him, his heart stops.

God, you're beautiful.

Your hair done up all special, wearing your favorite dress, your makeup all perfect and pretty.

"Hey Johnny!" You beam, grinning ear-to-ear at the sight of him.

"H–Hey, doll," he murmurs back. It's obvious he's nervous.

"I, uh, got these for you," he holds out the bouquet of flowers, your favorites.

"Oh, Johnny, they're beautiful!" Your grin (somehow) widens even more as you take them from his hands. "Come inside, you must be freezing!"

He shuffles inside your house – big, fancy, extravagant – and he sticks out like a sore thumb.

"Lemme show you off to my 'ma!"

You take his arm and practically drag him into the kitchen. There, standing at the counter, are your parents. On the left, your mother, smiling softly at him. On the right, your father, adorning an unreadble look on his face, stoic as ever.

"Ma, Pa, this is Johnny!" You bite your lip as you smile at them – and him.

"Hello, Mr. and Mrs–" He begins, squaring his shoulders in an attempt to seem less nervous.

"Oh, sweetie, no need to call me that! Just call me Debbie, please!" Your mother interrupts cheerily.

Is she serious, Johnny can't help asking himself.

Your father, however, is being less friendly. His face is stern, unwavering, as he sizes up the boy before him.

"Pa?" You murmur, looking at him expactantly.

After several, tense moments, he speaks.

"You have a job?"

"Y–Yeah. At the DX, in the garage."

"Gotten in any trouble with police–"

"Pa!" You butt in.

"I'm just askin'!"

Johnny sighs, before replying with a shake of his head. "No, sir."

For several moments, there's silence. Then, your dad sighs. And nods.

"Lets have dinner, shall we?" He gestures to the table littered with food.

You grin at Johnny, eyes lighting up.

"He likes you! He likes you, Johnny!" You pat his arm as you head into the dining room.

And for the first time that day, Johnny's nerves calm. Not because of your father's approval, but because of you.

#4 - the lot

It was one of those nights.

The ones where Johnny feels like giving up.

He'd been minding his own business all day, walking down the streets, trying to find a good gift for your one year anniversary. But of course, it had to be ruined. By Socs.

There was five of them. One of him. They cornered him into an alley, called him filthy names.

"Wonder why a broad like her would ever wanna associate with trash like you.

"Nothin' but a waste. Can't even defend himself."

"What a fuckin' pussy."

It broke him.

So now, he sits in the lot, forearms resting on his knees, tears rolling down his cheeks.

Christ, he really is pathetic.

That is, until you arrive.

The gang had probably called you the moment they caught wind of what had happened. Naturally you came to his aid. You always do.

You rush to his side, worry etched across your soft features.

"Johnny... John, look at me." You murmur, kneeling before him now.

He shakes his head.

"Johnny! Come on, baby, look at me!" You're pleading now, voice higher than typical out of worry.

With a sigh, Johnny looks up, finally facing you. Revealing the black eye that mars his face, his split lip, and crooked nose.

"Oh, Johnny–" You gasp.

Your hands come up to cup his cheeks, eyes scanning his face frantically.

"Oh, my sweet boy, what did they do to you..."

Suddenly, their words echo in his head. Pussy. Weak. Pathetic. Loser. Scum.

"Get off me." He snaps.

You flinch. Draw back. Stare at him in confusion.

"What are you–"

"I said, get off me! I don't need your fuckin' help!" He's never raised his voice at you. Never. You stare at him as you back away, confusion filling your features. What has gotten into him?

"Johnny, I'm just tryna help–"

"Well, I don't need your goddamn help! I can fix my own issues, man!" He runs his shaky hands through his hair.

You watch him for several moments. The trembling of his frame, the look in his eyes, the dampness on his cheeks. You wish you could take away all his pain.

Without a word, you sit down beside him. Not touching. Not speaking. Just there. He sits a foot away, hunched over, breathing fast and trembling hard.

A sob escapes him.

You don't say a word.

You don't need to. Your presence is enough. It always will be. To him, you're everything. Even if he pushes you away. Even if he does get angry. Because deep down, he knows you care. You may not understand, but you care. But that's enough. It always will be.

#5 - the curtis house

Over a year has passed since you and Johnny's first date. By now, you've been fully adopted into the gang. No longer are they standoffish, distant or cold. Now, you're one of them.

You'd always been kind to them, bringing baked goods or helping cook. You didn't treat them like a charity case, acted better than them, or force your way into their life. You were simply there.

Tonight, however, was different.

It was a summer afternoon. school had recently gotten out, the nostalgic vibes in full swing.

Johnny sits on the couch beside Ponyboy, while Two-Bit, Soda, Steve and Dally are caught up in a heated game of Blackjack which Steve totally thinks Dally is cheating at, whom denies it every time (he's cheating). Darry stands in the kitchen, finishing up with the dishes.

And on the other side of the room, sits you, the sun casting a gentle orange glow over your face.

He watches you, silently. He watches you laugh at a joke Sodapop makes. He watches you reply sassily to a comment from Dally. He watches you banter with the entire gang like you've been there since the beginning.

Sometimes, it feels like you have.

Once again, he's enamored by how beautiful you are.

Your soft features, your tender smile, the easy way you talk and get on with his closest friends.

He spends so much time simply watching you, he doesn't hear Pony speaking until he's calling out his name.

"Johnny! Quit oglin' your girl and listen t'me!" He quips with furrowed brows.

An all-too-familiar cacophony of 'ooos' and 'aahhs' echoes throughout the room.

"Yeah, Johnnycakes, quit starin' at your broad all the time!" Dally smirks.

"I ain't oglin', nor am I starin'! Could 'ya blame me anyways?" He grumbles, pouting and sitting back in his seat.

Yet, his gaze still flickers back to you.

You, sitting there, smiling right back at him. Not mocking. Not annoyed. But content.

And in that moment, Johnny Cade realizes one thing that will forever be true:

You are his entire world.
