I LOVE THIS

*reblogs and pins*

this might be my silly inconsequential take about this but I think you should support your friends' art endeavours in whatever ways you can and very vehemently

say nice shit about their art. fangirl about it, compliment the art fundamentals or the vibe or the color whatever. share their posts online

it used to be so easy to create an art community online in the past and now it's hellish. fight the algorithms. spam your friends art. they will either rlly appreciate the attention or straight up need it.

theres something slightly heartbreaking about the thought that the people around you don't care about your creations. by all means, you should create art for yourself but also, sometimes that art is a direct window into your inner world and when friends and loved ones ignore that it can sting pretty bad

that's it folks be nice to each other out there and fight to create meaningful communities

This goes for fanfic too btw.

I'm gonna say it.

It's unhinged to assume that someone's taste in fiction equates to what they believe is moral or good, or is something they want to see or experience in real life.

That is a bonkers assumption to make.

I'm tired of humoring people with long arguments about it when the simple fact is it is a totally fucking absurd reach to accuse someone who enjoys something in fiction of being in favor of it in real life.

I'm tired of pretending like this is a legitimate position to hold-- that they should be afraid of fiction's dire influence on a reader's moral decay or that it's a sign of what the author secretly wants for realsies in real life.

I promise you it is still getting me death threats in 2024.

Having a traumatic childhood means you cannot talk even objectively about your basic foundational experiences without it being "venting", even if you're not actually venting. You just straight up have a huge chunk of your life you can't talk about, full stop, without it being trauma dumping.

And it not being socially acceptable to talk about your own childhood is super alienating. Sometimes people want to know why, and any answer you can give them is going to be off putting.

It's to the point I get irritated when something I said is framed as venting when I'm literally just talking about my life experiences, doing my best to keep emotion out of it.

when I was in high school, I overheard two older students talking about a friend of theirs.

One of them said something like, "it doesn't bother me that [Friend] was in residential mental health treatment, I just wish they wouldn't talk about it ALL the time".

The other replied, "Well, that was all of last year for them. So when they say 'when I was in treatment,' it's like when you say 'last year'."

I try to remember that any time someone says something that sounds Shocking to me. sometimes one person's scary special crisis is another person's last year.

If you want to be accepting of mental illness, you need to accept the fact that some people's everyday lives are going to be terrifying to you. That doesn't mean they don't get to talk about it. Stop forcing hurt, isolated people to become even MORE hurt and isolated because you can't fathom toughening up a bit.

#like there is a line between just talking about your past #and traumadumping #if you're talking about movies and you say something like 'oh yeah when i was inpatient last year i was so frustrated i couldn't see it' #that's just your life #if you interrupt a conversation about a movie you missed while you were in inpatient last year #to start talking about how traumatized you were from being in inpatient and feeling cut off from the world #and going into details about all the things you missed out on and how it's affecting you #that's traumadumping #the key is the context and the presentation #that's my opinion anyway #like yeah you also deserve to be able to talk about the bad stuff too sometimes but again #it's about CONTEXT (tags via @ruffboi-mags )

Yeah, it's also just . . . shit that comes up in conversation.

If there's a conversation where people are talking about high school and ask about my high school experience, there's not really a better way to express "The bullying at my Jr high was really bad and my mental health issues really kicked into high gear, so I dropped out and got my GED and started college early."

That doesn't even really bother me anymore, because it's been more than twenty years - it's not really something I feel emotional about - but it is a fact about my life that happened. I'm not going to lie and make up some kind of high school experience that didn't happen.

"this suicidal person is so stupid for believing nobody will miss them. i remember people i haven't talked to in years lol"

ok but are you present in their life enough for them to realize that?

Avatar
beef-estrogenoff-deactivated-de

we can all say after the fact that we cared for our friend who committed or disappeared or whatever. we can even mean it when we say it. we can think about them. but did we ever act on it? did we ever even make them feel like we were there? "nobody would care if i disappeared" is not a literal phrase. of course they know that people would care. what the phrase conveys is a deep sense of alienation that can't be mended by implying stupidity on their part.

i know vitamin c basically neutralizes adhd meds but lemonade good

I have been struggling

For a long fucking time

with why my adderall was having such uneven effects and varying efficacy

and the weird pattern of what made it work and not work and if it was building up in my system or not

and fucking nobody told me I shouldn’t drink a glass of Kool-Aid to take the pills with

or eat fucking Pop-Tarts or Life cereal

this is the most useful information I have ever received from tubr and it seems to be confirmed by several other places upon searching

so this actually should be spread like wildfire like actually

Me reading this realizing tunglr dawt kom gave me more information about my medication than MYDOCTORRRRRSSSSSS MYYYYYYYY FUCKENNNNN DOCTORSSSSS PLURAL MULTIPLE DOCTORSSSSSSSS

Reblogging to spread this ridiculously important info

Generally speaking, your doctors actually may not know these things. This is the kind of stuff to ask your pharmacist about.

Ok what the actual fuck , why does nobody tell you this like , wtf

Citric Acid is added to A LOT of food items as a preservative and flavoring agent. Things you may not even consider having it. Check ingredient labels on everything!!!❤️

PS: Citrus affects SO MANY other drugs as well. Check your info sheet, or go online for contraindications and drug reaction info.

**For those saying this is misinformation: citrus DOES render some meds ineffective. I have to even disclose this to owners that give their dogs fruit treats ( just like milk products affecting some meds too). Keep in mind a lot of the meds I’m dispensing for veterinary use ARE ALSO originally used for human patients (vet industry does a lot of off label use).

When I was in the hospital, they gave me a big bracelet that said ALLERGY, but like. I'm allergic to bees. Were they going to prescribe me bees in there.

So there's a medication called hyaluronidase. It's used to make other medications absorb better, because it makes the cell wall more permeable.

One common usage is to make local anesthetic more effective during surgery, for instance. It's used in a number of injected medications.

Bee stings contain an enzyme very similar to this medication, so sometimes, people with bee allergies have an allergic reaction to hyaluronidase.

This is called cross-reactivity, where your body mistakes something for the thing it's actually allergic to, and has an allergic reaction anyway. For instance, sometimes people with latex allergies also are allergic to bananas and other fruits. They don't actually contain latex, but there are some similar proteins.

Apparently, hyraluronidase used in humans is derived from one of four sources: sheep testicles, cow testicles, cow testicles again, and GMO hamster ovaries.

tl;dr: They won't inject you with bees, but they might inject you with purified cow testicle juice, and your body might say 'eh, cow balls are BASICALLY bees' and try to kill you anyway.

The world is full of such beauty and wonder. Thank you for that sentence.

theyer old enough that they used to connect

They're older than Florida. The Floridian peninsula is the solidified runoff of the Appalachians that got caught on some coral. It's why we're like this, I think. You don't stand a chance of being normal when you were created by the shed skin of an elder god draping itself over a hollow skeleton. You're always going to be a little Off.

They used to be as tall as the Himalayas.

Okay but are they older or younger than sharks?

THEYRE OLDER THAN SHARKS BY LIKE THIRTY MILLION YEARS

Smart woman next to an unbelievable achievement is a picture niche that will never get old

Then you’re gonna love this photo of Annie Jump Canon.

Working at Harvard in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s as a “Computer”, Annie Jump Cannon cataloged stars using their spectra from photographic plates, in an effort to understand the mysteries and peculiarities of stellar spectra.

This was hard, detailed, nuanced work. By 1889, three years into her work, she had classified over 1,000 stars. By 1913, she could classify 200 stars an hour. She could classify three stars a minute, just by sight. Using a magnifying glass, she could classify stars down to 9th magnitude, 16 times fainter than the human eye can see. And she did this all with exceptional accuracy.

Over the course of her career, she personally classified more than 350,000 stars, accounting for a mind-boggling 98% of all contemporary stellar spectra classifications, a feat that wouldn’t be bested until the 1990’s with automated digital sky surveys.

Cannon used these classifications to develop the Harvard spectral classification system (O–B–A–F–G–K–M), organizing stars by surface temperature and physical properties.

It is hard to overstate just how foundational her work was to modern astronomy and astrophysics. Her classifications have enabled more than a century of breakthroughs in stellar structure and evolution, including the understanding of how stars change over time and how temperature, luminosity, and composition are related. The system underpins the Hertzsprung–Russell (HR) diagram, one of the most important tools in astrophysics, and remains embedded in modern research, from stellar population studies to galaxy evolution.

The immense scale of her work was itself a massive contribution to astronomy. For comparison, before Cannon, star catalogs contained between 600 and 4,000 stars. Her work single-handedly proved that large-scale stellar classification was both feasible and scientifically valuable. She helped establish systematic star catalogs as a core method of modern astronomy and laid the groundwork for astrophysical research on stellar structure, evolution, and populations that continues today.

Annie Jump Cannon features as a character in the play Silent Sky, which focuses on another woman computer, Henrietta Leavitt. If you can find a showing near you, it’s a wonderful piece.

it's almost summer do you guys want my stupid hyperoptimized lemonade recipe that takes half a day to make and whips absolute ass

Fruited Lemonade That Makes You Reconsider It All

ingredience:

  • lemons/limes (this needs to make up the bulk of the fruit being used, like at least 80%)
  • whatever other fruits or fruit scraps you want, plus any herbs/other flavorings you want to try. by fruit scraps I mean things like cherry pits, apple peels, pineapple cores, strawberry ends, things like that.
  • granulated white sugar, the coarser the better, 50% by weight of total citrus rinds + 100% by weight of any additional fruit. you'll measure this after you prep the fruit.
  • water as needed

equipment:

  • a few nonmetallic mixing bowls
  • a mesh strainer
  • a chinoise, ricer or some cheesecloth
  • a kitchen scale
  • a citrus juicer or reamer (manual or electric)
  • a potato masher

juice the citrus through a strainer - saving all rinds -  and refrigerate the juice for the time being. dice the rinds and other fruits if any, keeping the rinds separate. make note of weights, and measure your sugar.

Place sugar in a large nonmetallic bowl. If using non-citrus fruits and/or any other flavorings, mix them in with the sugar and mash with potato masher. add diced citrus rinds, mix thoroughly, and mash again. cover and let stand at room temperature for at least 4 hours. this allows the sugar to draw out flavors that would otherwise get discarded with the rinds, and the rinds' acids should be enough to dissolve the sugar into a syrup.

Afterward, mash one last time, then collect the syrup by pressing the macerated mixture through a strainer/chinoise or ricer, or squeeze it through cheesecloth. if you want, this can be saved as a standalone syrup at this point, for use in cocktails or desserts. if not, slowly pour the reserved juice through the solids to to help get the remaining syrup out, and squeeze/press again. do the same thing one more time with warm water (roughly the same amount of water as juice). discard solids (or try making sangria with them!).

taste the mixture and add more water if necessary. a stronger mix is totally fine if you anticipate serving over ice on a hot day, or adding booze, or if there was a lot of non-sour fruit. keep in mind that it will taste a bit less sweet once it's chilled. pour into a pitcher and refrigerate.

citrus oils will float to the top, so stir/shake before serving. love you. enjoy.

some tried and true flavor combos:

  • straight lemon or lime, or any combination of the two, is of course an untouchable classic
  • lemon & strawberries (that's pussy babe!)
  • lemon & orange with a hint of vanilla (creamsiclemonade...?)
  • lemon & apples or apple peels with cinnamon/ginger/allspice (for late summer)

some cocktail type combos, booze optional:

  • lemon or lime & berries with basil + gin
  • lime & mint + white rum
  • lime & ginger + dark rum
  • lime & cucumber + gin
  • lime & orange (berries optional) + tequila
  • lemon, orange & cherry + brandy, bourbon, or rye whiskey
