Today I wanted to talk about Kyle Bassinga. Kyle was a 21 year old man from Georgia, whose family described him as "a kind, thoughtful, and smart young man who loved nature, music, and the people around him". Kyle Bassinga was killed on February 18th 2026, just ten days after his birthday. He was found hanging from a tree in a park.
The police ruled it a suicide. The family and local community demanded an investigation. The police refused to change their ruling.
I know this website it too white for this to really go anywhere, but an understanding of the present reality of white supremacy in the United States is just so important to transfeminism here. Lynchings never stopped, white supremacy never went away, you just stopped looking.

Every time I go on Twitter or Facebook I learn about another recent lynching or missing Black person going mostly unreported. Half the reason I keep an active account on either of those sites is because they’re the only place I can find out about the violence happening to Black and Trans people reasonably quickly.
But I do need y’all to know that Black folks are currently, actively, being disappeared and lynched—if they even find our bodies. Black girls are and have been more often stolen into human trafficking, especially if they’re immigrants, but I’ve been seeing new news of probable lynchings every other day. Shit is worse than you think it is right now, tumblr just too white of a site to care lol

do y'all know about the pell grant shortfall? really interesting case study in how good intentions often lead to the destruction of social services.
the Federal Pell Grant offers between $740 and $7,395 per year to students whose Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) indicates have the highest level of financial need. the amount each student gets is based on how much need the FAFSA determines they have.
in 2020, Congress mandated that the FAFSA be simplified because, in their view, it was too complicated for the average person to complete and was too selective in who received Pell Grant. this act also increased the maximum Pell Grant amount by about $150 per year. in theory, this is a good thing. however, the consequences of simplification were not considered. a lot of the questions that were cut from the FAFSA were intended to determine who received Pell Grant and how much. without these questions, its a lot easier to fudge your finances to make you look eligible for Pell. the simplified FAFSA debuted in 2024, which was a major ordeal in itself (and really quite fascinating, but that's a story for a different time).
as a result of simplification, many many many more students became eligible for the Pell Grant, and especially for the maximum Pell Grant. again, in theory, this is a good thing. however, no one made any plans for how this increased Pell Grant expenditure would be funded. so now a lot more students are being supported at a higher rate by an account that has not increased in appropriations.
which leads us to today. there is a $10 BILLION Pell Grant shortfall hovering over american higher education for the upvoming 2026-27 year. Congress has no plans on how to cover this shortfall. in fact, Congress hasn't even pretended to care about it. and something tells me an administration who passed legislation to dissolve the Department of Education isn't really interested in saving the Pell Grant. so we're in a sort of limbo. no one know how the shortfall is going to be addressed. schools themselves cant cover the expense. it is somewhat likely that this shortfall will be used as a justification to dissolve the Federal Pell Grant program. which leaves the highest-need students without essential aid.
I don't know who my intended audience is here, so whoever needs to hear this, I am begging you to learn to participate in conversations that are about things you aren't interested in.
