sometimes finding aromanticism in media isn’t literally about aromanticism… sometimes it’s about the deconstruction of love as a concept and the subversion of its perception as inherently humanising. it’s about the decentering of romance as a driving force in the narrative. and also sometimes it’s about love being central to the narrative but in a way that defies all traditional categorisations of romantic / platonic / anything else. it is the secret third thing yet so much more and less at once. the point is aromanticism is everywhere for those with eyes to see

this post obviously touches on the fact that the human experience is infinitely variable and there are fantastic aspects of every way of life that are often unique to that experience. and also i think aromanticism is cool as fuck and everyone Should have fomo about it 🙂‍↕️

I mean yeah I’m definitely missing out an aspects unique to that experience, but I have no feelings of fomo about it. I don’t think, at the end of the day, I want to have lived a life without some kind of romance. It’s something I’ll never really understand, but I guess that comes with the territory of being an allosexual. Like a cis person can never really understand what it’s like to be trans

alloro people will see someone post about a positive experience being aro and immediately go “i would Never want to live like you” as if that’s a normal fucking thing to say to somebody. anyway i love living a life without any kind of romance. and for the record i think cis people are missing out incredibly on being trans as well

in hindsight, growing up as an aromantic person who didn't know aromanticism was a thing...it woulda been really easy for me to assume that something was wrong with me, that I was "broken" or "missing" some piece of humanity.

luckily I was autistic, oblivious, and had a huge ego. it literally never occurred to me to frame it as a "me" problem. i just thought every single person i knew was a dumbass

This phrase has already entered my vocabulary re: media criticism where like. The viewer has a concrete view of what they expect a story to be based on the tropes and cliches they're used to seeing together, and when that doesn't happen, they judge it as a failed depiction of what they assumed it was going to be instead of judging it as what it actually is.

"This show is problematic because the hero didn't kill the villain at the end": When does he steal the bread?

"These two characters who were close friends throughout the series don't kiss at the end! What the fuck?": When does he steal the bread?

"This feels like it's missing a conclusion! Like, the protagonist does bad stuff and because of a critical decision he makes as a result of his major character flaws, meets tragedy in the end! Where's the part where he learns better and brings is love back from the dead and becomes a good guy and gets a happy ending?": When does he steal the fucking bread??

I heard this out as "When criticizing something, you must judge it for what it is, not what it isn't"
