fanfic meme: answer post the third

Today, I am not in the mood for humaning, let alone adulting. Just let me crawl back into bed and sleep until the thirty-third day of Never.

I offered answers for a fanfic meme back in June, and promptly forgot about it. (Sorry!)

3. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works?

I like to think it's that I write different characters to the mainstream, and I write them differently to the mainstream.

Two more to go! #19 and #5.

17. A trope you’ll never, ever write for. requested by [personal profile] rmc28

I have yet to write an A/B/O trope, and I'm pretty sure that'll never happen, although one never knows. I'm not a big fan of biological determinism, and although it could maybe be subverted, it would probably take more effort than I could be bothered expending!

22. Do you listen to anything while you write? requested by [personal profile] sharpest_asp

Mostly I don't. I like quiet so I can think and someone singing at me just gets distracting. Also, music has a lot of associations for me, so that can also divert my thoughts from what I should be writing to whatever mood the song has me in.

27. What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received? requested by [personal profile] beatrice_otter

I've gotten a lot of comments over the decades, and I can't actually remember which one was "the nicest". But I can tell you the ones that I love receiving and often later re-reading when I come back to a story and read the comments weeks, months, even years later.

It's always delightful to hear from people who loved the story, but particularly delightful to hear what they loved: the phrasing, the characterisation, the situation/crisis and how I resolved it.

As an example, my recent fic 'Twelve Steps' is a canon-divergence from Endgame, and quite a few of the comments mentioned that they not only loved the changes I made and the reasons I gave, but also they loved that I'd followed the logical conclusion of the events of the movie, as well as how clear it was that the characters had changed in their time apart from each other.

Those are the comments that warm my heart: where people appreciate and pick out the details that struck them, particularly when those details are ones that I took pains to include in the story.

2. Why do you write fanfiction? requested by [personal profile] rmc28

Thinking all the way back to my earliest days of fanfic conceptualisation, it was usually because I wanted to see a variation on a story that wasn't contemplated in canon.

I wanted to see Leia save the galaxy and her brother. I wanted to read more about Generation X (of the X-Men comic books)'s interactions with each other and the world around them as teenagers rather than as superheroes. I wanted Sam Carter to end up with Jack O'Neill without losing her sass and her delight in technology and her duty in the military. I wanted to explore the dynamics between the characters of the Justice League cartoons both when the world's fate rested on their shoulders and when it didn't...

A lot of times, I write fanfic because I want to see a scenario about a character that I like, but who isn't well-liked by most fans, or whose fans can't write them as the character in which I see them. And yes, I have a type when it comes to fanfic characters, and yes, they're a bit like me in character (which makes it considerably easier to write tem).

And, you know, the feedback is nice. :)

tired again

I really should go out and dig the hole for that extra chook yard post. Some physical action will definitely help my state of mind and body.

It's grey today, with a drizzle of rain every now and then, and a general feeling of dampness. I'm sitting in the lounge room with Maladicta curled up on a cushion beside me, and a file open in 4TheWords and I'm writing. Just worked out a good personal-interaction scene for the MC to connect with someone that I want to turn up as a recurring character in this story and others.

Trying to decide what to have for lunch. Have started making some tabbouleh, except without the bulgur wheat; it's mostly tomato (winter tomato) and shallots right now. Which probably isn't tabbouleh, exactly.

I made Kansas City BBQ pork ribs yesterday - well, the cut was 'pork belly ribs' which is a small cut of pork ribs with a lot of belly meat on it (probably because they've taken the skin for crackling). The chipotle apricot sauce was *chef's kiss*: sweet and spicy and fruity and all the good things turned into a marinade crust.

Thought I'd make a black forest cake today, but that will mostly depend on time and energy. I kind of want to make a chocolate mud cake for the cake, but I think that's too rich for a black forest cake. And I'd like to make a black forest pavlova like a recipe that I've had for decades, but...that's a lot of effort, really!

My hockey club, denied the back end of our season, have been watching the Olympics together, and it's been very fun and sociable this week. Quite a few of the ladies have developed a crush on the Aussie and Belgian penalty-flick takers on the men's hockey teams - Blake Govers (AUS) and Alexander Hendriks (BEL) and it's been amusing to watch.

The social interaction is good since some are feeling very isolated by lockdown, and struggling somewhat. At least two are single parents and isolation and lockdown is taking its toll on them and their kids. So we're going to do a weekly zoom meeting for an hour or so on Sunday afternoons at 3pm.

Sorry if I've been over all this in the last week and you're re-reading it. I'll be putting up a separate gardening post over in [community profile] gardening, and will link back here. Hopefully. :)

Question of the Day: What skill would you like to master?

Probably the ability to empathise with people, to see their side. And then to find ways to persuade them to my way of thinking.

things

I was going to do the five famous people meme, which I saw on [personal profile] pensnest's journal, but I only really have two 'biggies': Chris Pine and Jason Momoa. One at the Sydney premiere of the Star Trek movie (AOS) and the other while working the collectors' tables at an SGA fannish event in Melbourne back in the 00s.

--

I have bought Amazon Prime (for a month) and Kindle Unlimited (for three months at half-price) and I am contemplating buying Netflix for a couple of months to watch 'The Bridgertons'.

I blame the bluray player with recording features which I bought for B1 for Christmas. (I also bought B2 a bluray player with various similar, but lesser, features.) I plan to watch through The Hobbit at some stage. Exactly when? Don't know.

--

Today, someone is coming by to pick up some metal fencing that we have which has been sitting around for forever and a day. HUZZAH!

There's also garden planning to be done for the city garden trail that's taking place in late February and mid-March. Same one as last year but two weekends: one in-person, one virtual. I need to sort out what I'm going to plant for displaying and eating and what other tasks need to be done and when.

I also have to get the water tank connected up.

Don't know what, if anything, is happening New Year's Eve. In previous years, friends from church would do the big NYE party, but obviously this year it's unwise. I think smaller parties may be taking place at various houses across the city - I think one sister may go down to spend NYE with cousins in Cronulla, and the other may go to a friend's place in Meadowbank.

Sydney is still trying to find the 'missing links' to about 7 cases which have no known point of origin, and until we find them, regular celebrations are not going to go forward. I know a mere 7 cases is not big for other countries (and technically it's not big here) but those missing links could be anywhere and the potential for it all getting out of control is huge.

Thing is, we won't know how big and bad it is until next week and beyond.

Today is 'trying to write' day. We'll see how that goes.

random question meme

01. what kind of soap is in your bathroom right now?
Liquid soap in a pump container. Goat's milk soap under the sink. Cussons Imperial Luxe (our mother was getting rid of some) in the sink, and possibly also in the shower (B2 uses it when she comes over on weekends). I'm pretty sure B1 has bubble bath or some kind of baby skin care option...as well as a 20L container of metho. (Apparently it helps with skin rashes, etc.)

02. do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?
No. It's the middle of winter. But even in summer we probably don't.
