"Which could mean anything," I'd grumbled to John Hugonin that afternoon when I went in to report the week to him. As the current agent to whom I was reporting - and the first one who could make the decision about whether I could graduate to full agent - he was encouraging me to report the things that  I'd been looking at through in my week. At the same time, he was also willing to tell me about the things that he had on his plate which I had the clearance to look at. Moreover, unlike some agents, he asked me to give my thoughts on the situation, what I thought we were looking at, what I thought Crossover should do.

He'd sat back in his office chair, hunching his shoulders a little as he set his elbows on the armrests. "A good Crossover Agent has connections in as many places as possible," he said. "Not just in Crossover, but in other organisations, in companies, and even in governments where possible. We're not limited to any one country or box of alphabet soup, because sooner or later, a good agent will have to deal with all of them."

MCU fic: "if time is all I have" - General [Maria, Steve]

My story for the [community profile] auexchange:

if time is all I have (4217 words) by tielan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Maria Hill/Steve Rogers, Maria Hill & Steve Rogers
Characters: Maria Hill, Steve Rogers
Additional Tags: Steve Rogers as the Winter Soldier
Summary:

Maria knows what that look means. She knows the mindset behind it. She's seen it in the resolve of agents who knew the odds of going in, heard it in field operatives calling for an exit in impossible situations, witnessed it in extraction targets who didn't believe that they'd actually make it out. And sometimes the odds were defied, the impossible happened, and everyone made it out in one piece. Sometimes.

To see that expression in the man they call the Winter Soldier....

I do love my regular readers; I may not be a BNF or someone who writes what the majority of fans enjoy, but the people who enjoy my work enjoy my work and I really love when they enjoy reading what I like writing. (Even when the writing process is a PITA.)

Relationships: Jyn Erso & Mara Jade
Characters: Jyn Erso, Mara Jade
Additional Tags: Crossover, POV Alternating, Pre-Rogue One, A few months BBY
Summary: Jyn's doing the best she can. Mara's doing the Emperor's bidding. For both of them, that means going to a jewelry shop at midnight.
I love the reflection on names and naming, on the necessity of what they're doing, and on their frank honesty to each other - two women whose innocence is a long way behind them.

Fanomd: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Faith Lehane & Buffy Summers
Characters: Faith Lehane, Buffy Summers,
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Angst and Hurt/Comfort, Hurt/Comfort
Summary: For a while, they are quiet, locked away from the world, locked away from each other. This, Faith knows, this is familiar. Two Slayers and not enough world and never the right words.
This one is a character punch: they're both so young (some twenty plus years later) but at the same time, so old for what they've seen. And they don't relate to each other in any kind of way that we'd consider 'normal' or 'proper' but it's the only way they know how.

For my own assignment, I wrote about 3K, then decided it wasn't complete enough and rewrote a much shorter and tighter < 1K ficlet. Then I pulled together a slightly longer story that fit a request that I could fill. I have two other little notes of possibility that I could still fill with something small, but I'd need to have time to do that...and I don't.

Happy V-Day to us all: may we love and be loved, however that represents to us. And may we be gentle with ourselves in what is looking very much like a year of slow recovery. *hugs*

As it turns out, I just finished the next story in my Meeting Halfway series - 30 Days of OTP: Maria Hill/Steve Rogers. I started it back in 2012, and at the rate I'm going, I might just have the lot complete by 2022...

Fandom: Dragonriders of Pern - Anne McCaffrey
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Mirrim/T'gellan (Dragonriders of Pern)
Characters: Mirrim (Dragonriders of Pern), T'gellan (Dragonriders of Pern), Brekke (Dragonriders of Pern)
Summary:

It's what T'gellan wanted, just not quite the way he hoped.

I was never much into Mirrim/T'gellan before, but have been asked to write it in the past, and found that I had a little more in me for it when my YT recipient mentioned that she was okay with just about any of the untold stories of the weyr. I think I'd like to finish it off with them as weyrmates (I got them to lovers in this story) at some point...

fic thingies October-November

Do I want to do Heart Attack? 10K in 2 weeks (last two weeks of NaNo, pretty much)? I mean, I certainly can, I'm just deciding whether I would and whether it would benefit any of my fics.

I haven't started my YT fic yet. I suppose I should be more worried about it but right now...I'm not stressed. (Maybe I should be? I recall it all being very "OH, I CAN DO THIS!")

--

I've done a number of fic additions or new stories, mostly because I needed something happy-shiny-fun to write and fanfic was it.

I managed fluffy fluffy fluffy for [community profile] shipoween:
Survivors (1916 words) by tielan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Pacific Rim (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Raleigh Becket/Mako Mori
Summary:

Sometimes survival is a matter of playing hardball.

TBH, it feels like ages since I wrote PR. But this was a nice, happy-soft-fun snapshot.

And also some Steve/Maria soulmates fic:
First Glimpse Of Hearts (8292 words) by tielan

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Soulmates, Soulmates, The Angry Goose Of Destiny, Soulmate-Identifying Marks, Alternate History
Series: Part 2 of First Touch
Summary:

A meeting in a garden. A goose attack. And a glimpse of what might be...

The Endgame videos/gifsets for the election stirred a lot of old bitterness up. BLEH.

And another chapter or two of the Psy-Changeling fusion:
The Gathering Clouds (20885 words) by tielan
Chapters: 7/?
Fandom: The Avengers (2012), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Phil Coulson & Maria Hill, Steve Rogers & Thor, Steve Rogers & Tony Stark, Bruce Banner & Steve Rogers, Maria Hill/Steve Rogers, Steve Rogers & Janet Van Dyne
Characters: Maria Hill, Phil Coulson, Steve Rogers, Thor, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Janet Van Dyne, Pepper Potts, Morgan Stark (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Psy-Changelings, Alternate Universe - Psychics/Psionics, Alternate Universe - Werecreatures, Drama, Escape, Alternate Universe - Psy-Changeling (Nalini Singh)
Series: Part 1 of Wolf & Arrow: MCU-Psy/Changeling AU
Summary:

Maria had always known that someday that the shambling, soulless creature that returned from Rehabilitation would be her – used one too many times, broken beyond fixing. She’d accepted the eventuality of that end for herself. But for Phil and these children, whose crime was merely to challenge the Psy Council’s preconceptions? No. Not while she had breath.

In which Sam, Nick, Clint, and Natasha make an appearance...

On the writing board is the next installment of the 30 Days Of Your OTP (Steve/Maria), Paved With Good Intentions (Maria/Clint soulmates | Maria/Steve relationship), the next chapter of the wisdom to know the difference (honestly do not know if it will ever be finished), and the fic I'm calling baby's first moebius...

And Yuletide, of course.

I could probably write Paved With Good Intentions in 10K or more. It might end up being seriously more: shit gets REAL in that one. And it would be nice to have a significant drive to finish it. It would be nice to have a significant drive to finish any of these...

Only, there's also the original fiction to write: I was hoping to complete Act II during NaNo. Not even close right now. Need to stop re-editing in my head. Oh, and focus. It was awful focusing last week and this week seems to be ALL THE WORK THINGS.

Anyway. Back to work, I guess...

fics

Two fics for [community profile] auexchange, two general series updates.

So, my AU Exchange assignment was Black Panther, Shuri-focused. I picked Shuri & M'Baku after the snap, in an AU where Shuri survived and mourned her brother. Wrote the story, finishing up on a Saturday morning...and not half an hour later heard that Chadwick Boseman had died.

I felt awful. Not just for Chadwick's death, but also for my recip who might have been okay with grieving/mourning fic at a time other than in the wake of the man's death... But I didn't have anything to rewrite the story with.

I could touch up a couple of other stories that had been sitting around for months (if not years) and post them, but I didn't have another Black Panther story in me before the deadline. So I submitted the fic and apologised in the note.

It's been generally well-taken. Elegiac, perhaps.

The Coming Future (2561 words) by tielan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Black Panther (2018), Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Avengers (Marvel Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: M'Baku & Shuri (Marvel)
Characters: Shuri (Marvel), M'Baku (Marvel), Okoye - cameo
Summary:

In the chaos after the moment - that moment - Shuri has but one thought: to assure herself that T'Challa has survived.

*sigh*

I really did want to write something else - I tried to start on a 'Shuri goes to the realm of the ancestors and speaks with Eric Killmonger, the better to understand him' story, but...couldn't get my wheels in.

What I could do was touch up a few stories that have been lingering around for far too long in the 'not yet done' folder. So I did.

--

I have a soft spot for "Stark-Hill siblings" and this has been lingering in one of my folders for forever. There are also multiple half-written scenes from a largely female Avengers core, although I think they were 'all-female Avengers' teams, not 'five women and Steve'.

This is also not the sequel where Tony and Maria meet on the steps of a Boston brownstone that Peggy and Angie are living together in. That has its own storyline that will not likely ever be done.

Another Suitcase In Another Hall (1373 words) by tielan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Maria Hill & Steve Rogers, Maria Hill & Tony Stark
Characters: Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Maria Hill
Summary:

The last time Steve saw her was driving off from Central Park with Ms. Potts in a sleek gunmetal grey Lamborghini with the numberplate MAR1A. Then, she was in jeans and a black-t-shirt with a denim jacket over the top – street casual. Now, she’s in a sleeveless dress in deep green that probably cost more than Steve’s ma made in a year back home, and which makes her look every inch the business heiress she is.

Then there's the next in the Meeting Halfway series, which, having stayed mostly in my own lane of fanon, abruptly went straight to canon.

Hell Hath No Fury Like A Hero Scorned (3720 words) by tielan

I feel like I haven't been productive at all. I think the previous fic I posted was back in February. And yeah, there are Reasons, but I've had a lot of time and done a lot of writing and I feel like I have't actually achieved all that much at all in all that time.

things about which I might actually be enthusiastic

Character Headcanon Meme

I did:
  • Kara Thrace (BSG)
  • Spike (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  • Dawn Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  • Maria Hill (MCU)
  • Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
  • Mako Mori(Pacific Rim)

That was kind of fun.

I'm trying to finish off the next story in the Meeting Halfway series (30 Days of OTP, for Maria/Steve, which I started 8 years ago and haven't yet finished).

I'm also trying to get the next chapter up for the MCU/Psy-Changeling universe up. The scene keeps ballooning out.

Have a snippet from the original fic I've been trying to write the last six months. I've been stuck at this segment about halfway through for, oh, around three of those six months.
"What's a callback?"

Green-flecked eyes stared at him like she'd forgotten he was even there. "It's a spell to 'remember' where everything was at a certain point in the past, in a location where magic was recently performed."

"Capturing the echo of the magic performed and how it affected the area." Cal knew the type of spell she was talking about - in Fae it was better known as 'magical memory'. "What's involved in casting a callback spell?"

"For the basic callback in the kit? The ability to cast a spell. Are you offering?"

"Yes." He held up a hand as she stood. "But only after you finish your dinner."

"The longer we wait, the less residue there'll be for performing the callback!"

"There'll be enough." He pointed at the bowl on her desk. "Eat. The faster you eat, the faster we'll get moving."

This time the look she gave him was grumpy, but she ate her meal and ten minutes later, they were walking through doors labelled Security with an additional sign beneath it that indicated, personal glamours may not hold past this point.

"Does that happen very often? The collapse of a personal glamour?"

"More often than you'd think," she said as she walked past the empty security desk towards the closed door behind it, but waved at the clearly-mounted camera in the corner before swiping her card to unlock the door. "People use personal glamours for a lot more than deception."

"Vanity is the usual cause," said the woman who swivelled her chair around from the desk where she'd been working, and rolled it over to the table nearest the door. "And I don't mean the two people with vitiligo who use a glamour; I mean the ones whose glamours are pretty much cosmetic; freckles or nicer shaped eyebrows or an entire makeup routine. Hi, I'm Ani." Her eyes crinkled at the corners as she grinned at Cal. "You really are as pretty as they said you were."

Jenna snorted. "Box kit now, flirt later."

"Work, work, work, this one," Ani grouched, still smiling, but pushed a box across the table top. "You know the deal for a callback spell; you've seen it done often enough. Although who you're going to find to do a spell at this hour, I don't know..." She trailed off as Cal raised a hand.

"He's actually not bad at magic," Jenna said. "For a Fae."

"Well, you're not all bad for Low Fae," she laughed, sliding her arm around his waist and snuggling up to him. And he was young enough and needy enough to take the affection - who'd ever shown him such regard before? - without pointing out how much it stung to be the exception.

He thought he did a better job of hiding his disquiet, but when they were in the elevator, Agent Jourdan turned to him. "I probably shouldn't have said that."

"Said what?"

"Not bad at magic for a Fae. I've gotten enough flak for being shit at magic this high up in Crossover, and you're considerably better than me."

"I..." He hesitated. "You scraped an old wound."

fic: "Duncker's Candle" [MCU: Maria/Steve]

Challenge 13

In your own space, create a fanwork.

This story was not created for this challenge, but I've had this fic sitting around on my HD for months and opened it up last night (before I saw the Challenge) to take a look. I was contemplating tidying and polishing it up for posting; it didn't need much.

This morning, I looked at the challenge notification email and figured it was a sign.

Forthwith:
Duncker's Candle (5865 words) by tielan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Maria Hill/Steve Rogers, Maria Hill & Steve Rogers, Steve Rogers & Peggy Carter, Peggy Carter/Peggy Carter's Husband, Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers (unresolved)
Characters: Maria Hill, Steve Rogers
Additional Tags: Developing Friendships, Comfort Sex, Post-Avengers (2012), happy for now
Summary:
Dressed in worn jeans and a casual shirt, Maria Hill looks universes away from the competent aide who moved about the helicarrier control room in the sleek S.H.I.E.L.D uniform, a cool-eyed officer who kept her head in a crisis, and commanded troops with an authoritative snap to her voice. Her hand is tucked in the arm of one of the elderly residents of the hospice, and she's laughing as the old lecher pats her hand with a distinctly proprietary air.

The amusement drops from her face as she recognizes him. "Rogers."

This was actually written in the wake of my dissatisfaction with Endgame, and there was a whole other story alongside/behind it. I decided to dedicate my time and energy to other things instead.
