How to Prompt
Prompts should be one prompt per comment, formatted in this way: fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence

Out of the corner of his eye, Giorno thought that he could see Bruno’s chest rise, his eyelid twitch. For a moment, his shaking hands stilled.
But the cathedral stayed quiet, and Bruno Bucciarati stayed cold and silent.

Date: 2024-01-14 04:56 am (UTC)The Oracle told Percy he'd be betrayed by a friend, so he chose the people he'd be questing with carefully. Grover, who'd never betray him. (Not really. He's over the incident at Yancy; that wasn't the satyr's fault.) Annabeth, who isn't his friend. Easy. Simple. Nothing to worry about.
He should've known better. Nothing's ever gone the way he's wanted it to.
Because, yeah, Annabeth is exactly as annoying as he'd guessed she'd be! Actually, she's worse, at least at first. But then things start changing...because she's brave. And, obviously, she is smart. And she's more loyal than he'd ever given her credit for. If you'd asked him back at camp if he thought she'd be willing to toss him to Furies or creepy blonde monster ladies for the sake of the quest? Heck, just for getting on her nerves? He would've said — yeah, of course. Wasn't she the one who made a whole plan to win capture-the-freakin'-flag around using him as bait?
So what's she doing, being the one calling on her mom to help him, nearly sacrificing herself for him and Grover, refusing the easy ways out? What's he doing, teasing her about hugging him, suggesting movie nights, trusting her like he's never trusted just about anyone?
When he looks at the trap, the bargain to get Ares's shield, when he sees how willing Annabeth is to throw herself in danger this time (again) — he should be thinking about the quest. He is thinking about the quest. But mostly he's thinking, I don't want to lose anyone else; and mostly, he's thinking, I don't want to lose you. And if there's anyone he trusts to watch out for Grover, to save his mom, to save the world — isn't it Annabeth?
And that makes it easy to tell her, it's okay and I'm okay, even as the machine holds him fast and swallows him whole. And he thinks, this is a lousy time to wonder what it would've been like to get to know her.
But nothing's ever gone the way he's wanted it to.

But by the third cup, Wei Ying is back to his usual self, flinging jokes and insults (and a few wayward talismans) around the place, and Jiang Cheng, her beloved-but-oh-so-serious baby brother has returned to his glaring and scowling that he uses to hide any traces of emotions or feelings.

That only makes Lucy weep in earnest, her sobs choked as she tries not to alert their mother in the sitting room. "It's just not fair-!"
It takes her a moment to fiddle with the iron to shut it off, but once she does, Susan walks over and gently pries the handkerchief from her sister's hands and then holds it against her nose like when she was four and dripping snot. "Blow," she commands and Lucy obeys, but her tears keep coming. Slowly, she sits next to her baby sister, curls an arm around her shoulders, and swears to herself that while she might have been able to overlook the sly looks, the pointed comments, or the accusations, she'd rather damn Narnia to hell than forgive them for her sister's tears.
