Independent journalists are vulnerable in ways mainstream journalists are not. Indies are responsible for everything: creative work, paying their own healthcare (or going without), and managing the business. They often can’t afford lawyers.
The best thing you can do right now to protect and support journalists is to pay them. If you want a free press, you have to pay for it.
