cozy_coffee's dictionary-definition prompt, "Any, any, to feel extreame sadness, sorrow".
Summary: Upon the news of her sister's death, it was like Shiho's world ended.
[Ficlet #10: Her Diminished Sparkle]Upon the news of her sister's death, it was like Shiho's world ended; she couldn't stop crying. Akemi was the only family she had left, a bright sparkle in her life blanketed by the darkness. Shiho was orphaned at a very young age, but she never felt too upset about it—for the most part, anyway—because her sister had always been there for her, albeit not physically; during Shiho's years in America, Akemi always made sure to stay in contact with her, both by phone and mail—she'd even send her little sister pictures and gifts.
It was ironic, really, how she dedicated the last five years to developing a drug to prolong the human lifespan, but there was no more point in that, was there? She decided to halt her research right there and then, at least, until the Organization gave her answers.
To sadden things up more, I'd like to point out that Akemi's name consists of the characters for "bright" (ake) and "beautiful" (mi). Quite fitting, isn't it?
