Her Diminished Sparkle (#10, Five Sentence Ficlets: Detective Conan)

Title: Her Diminished Sparkle
Author: Ran-dezvous
Genre: Angst, Family, Tragedy
Fandom: Detective Conan
Claim: General Series – Miyano Shiho and Miyano Akemi
Table/Theme: Table 1, Theme 9 – Total eclipse
Rating: PG
Word Count: 145
Original Publish Date: December 18, 2016 (for Lonely Prompts Week at comment_fic)
Disclaimer: I don't—and never will—own Detective Conan, no matter how many characters from the series I claim in various blogcrews. Aoyama Gosho is the lucky dude who does.
Notes: Written for cozy_coffee's dictionary-definition prompt, "Any, any, to feel extreame sadness, sorrow".
Summary: Upon the news of her sister's death, it was like Shiho's world ended.

[Ficlet #10: Her Diminished Sparkle]Upon the news of her sister's death, it was like Shiho's world ended; she couldn't stop crying. Akemi was the only family she had left, a bright sparkle in her life blanketed by the darkness. Shiho was orphaned at a very young age, but she never felt too upset about it—for the most part, anyway—because her sister had always been there for her, albeit not physically; during Shiho's years in America, Akemi always made sure to stay in contact with her, both by phone and mail—she'd even send her little sister pictures and gifts.

It was ironic, really, how she dedicated the last five years to developing a drug to prolong the human lifespan, but there was no more point in that, was there? She decided to halt her research right there and then, at least, until the Organization gave her answers.

To sadden things up more, I'd like to point out that Akemi's name consists of the characters for "bright" (ake) and "beautiful" (mi). Quite fitting, isn't it?

[Ficlet #9: A Mother’s Lament]She was right, she was absolutely right! She should've never let her son join the FBI! Screw letting your children make their own mistakes! She should've never let him chase after the people who've killed her husband!

All alone within the white walls of her hotel room, the normally stoic Mary finally allowed herself to cry.

Resolve (#8, Five Sentence Ficlets: Detective Conan)

Title: Resolve
Author: Ran-dezvous
Genre: Romance, Angst
Fandom: Detective Conan
Claim: General Series – Miyano Akemi and Akai Shuuichi
Table/Theme: Table 1, Theme 7 – Two-part harmony
Rating: PG
Word Count: 132
Original Publish Date: December 19, 2016 (during Lonely Prompts Week at comment_fic)
Disclaimer: I don't—and never will—own Detective Conan, no matter how many characters from the series I claim in various blogcrews. Aoyama Gosho is the lucky dude who does.
Notes: Written for drabblewriter's prompt, "Any, any, never thought we'd have a last kiss, never imagined we'd end like this", with brumeier's "Lasts" meta theme.
Summary: Even after discovering the truth about Dai, Akemi still wanted to be with him.

[Ficlet #8: Resolve]"I don't care if you're FBI, okay?"

Akemi wrapped her arms around her lover's neck and pulled him toward a kiss. Dai's mouth tasted of coffee and cigarettes—two things which he loved to consume—as per usual, but for her, it was the best taste in the world. She loved him, and she didn't care if he was a spy and he initially used her to get into the Organization, she could tell by the way he hungrily kissed her in return, biting her lips as he slid his hand unto the small of her back, his feelings were genuine and that he loved her in return.

She didn't know what the future held in store for them, but, for now, this harmonious symphony orchestrated by their lips and bodies was enough.

I don't normally write kissing scenes, so I hope this wasn't too lame!

Unimpressed (#7, Five Sentence Ficlets: Detective Conan)

Title: Unimpressed
Author: Ran-dezvous
Genre: Humor, General
Fandom: Detective Conan
Claim: General Series – Furuya Rei | Amuro Tooru and the Detective Boys (Haibara Ai, Kojima Genta, Tsuburaya Mitsuhiko, and Yoshida Ayumi)
Table/Theme: Table 1, Theme 1 – Melts in the mouth
Rating: G
Word Count: 85
Original Publish Date: October 26, 2016 (at comment_fic)
Disclaimer: I don't—and never will—own Detective Conan, no matter how many characters from the series I claim in various blogcrews. Aoyama Gosho is the lucky dude who does.
Notes: prisca1960's meta-challenge was five-sentence fic, so I figured I'd do double duty and combine prompts; they're related, anyway. The prompt provided by withasmile87 was "any, any, chocolate fudge."
Summary: Amuro's chocolate fudge was huge hit with the Detective Boys, save for one other person, that is.

[Ficlet #7: Unimpressed]"This chocolate fudge's absolutely melting in my mouth!" exclaimed Genta, his mouth full of the indulgent, sinful brown decadence, not caring at all about society's mandate to not talk with food in one's mouth.

"This is a great addition to Poirot's menu!" added Mitsuhiko.

"Amuro-san's such a great cook!" gushed Ayumi.

"Why, thank you—"

"It's a decent enough chocolate fudge, I guess," Ai blandly remarked, casting a snarky glance at the dark-skinned barista before slicing off another piece of her dessert with her fork.

Is it bad I actually had to look up what chocolate fudge was? *sweatdrops*

ESL Woes

Title: ESL Woes
Author: Ran-dezvous
Genre: Humor, General
Fandom: Detective Conan
Character: Jodie Starling
Word Count: 109
Rating: G
Original Publish Date: December 19, 2016 (for Lonely Prompts Week on comment_fic)
Disclaimer: Aoyama Gosho owns the rights to Detective Conan, but he's cool with fans writing fanfiction, yay!
Notes: Written for amai_kaminari's prompt, "any, any, BFF", and with_rainfall's gen-fic meta challenge.
Summary: Jodie's attempt at teaching her students English slang.

[ESL Woes]As part of her mission to be the best high-school English teacher in Japan possible, Jodie made it a point to teach her students some actual English slang, even though it wasn't part of the curriculum. "Now, class, who can tell me what BFF means?"

The normally enthusiastic Class 2-B fell into silence for a few minutes, until finally, one of her students hesitatingly shot an arm into the air and said in heavily accented English, "Burger and fries forever?"

Jodie feigned a smile to hide her dismay (though she had to admit that was a very creative answer). Oh, boy, she had a lot of work to do.

There's a burger place in my country (not in my city, though) called BFF: Burger and Fries Forever, so guess where my brain went. *sweatdrops* I would have written an actual friendship fic, but "BFF" was too vague of a prompt for me. *is shot* Maybe someday I'll try a more serious attempt at Jodie's undercover high-school English teacher days, but I just had to make that joke, sorry. :P

Oh, and in case anyone reading doesn't know what ESL is, it stands for English as a Second Language.

A Deadly Question (#6, Five Sentence Ficlets: Detective Conan)

Title: A Deadly Question
Author: Ran-dezvous
Genre: Humor, Family, General
Fandom: Detective Conan
Claim: General Series – Miyano Atsushi and Miyano Akemi
Table/Theme: Table 1, Theme 5 – Death and taxes
Rating: PG
Word Count: 129
Original Publish Date: February 16, 2017
Disclaimer: I don't—and never will—own Detective Conan, no matter how many characters from the series I claim in various blogcrews. Aoyama Gosho is the lucky dude who does.
Notes: Written during mini_wrimo 2016.
Summary: Atsushi may be a biologist, but it didn't make explaining death to his young daughter any easier.

[Ficlet #6: A Deadly Question]"Daddy, what happens when we die?"

Any father would find this a difficult question to tackle, and Atsushi, despite all his credentials and educational attainment, was no exception. In some ways, it was actually even more difficult for him to come up with a suitable response since, as a biologist, he did know the answer: the bitter, cold, mechanical truth of the cessation of all biochemical reactions and processes responsible for life and the nonexistence of an afterlife--the kind of answer you don't tell a five-year-old girl. Compared to this, defending his dissertation was an absolute piece of cake; he would have preferred to be grilled by a merciless panel of experts all over again than address his daughter's query head on.

". . . Go ask your mother."

Cliché, I know, but, as I've been struggling with this theme for so long, I'll take anything my muse throws at me. *is shot* I originally wrote Elena and Rei for this, but, then I wondered why didn't I use Akemi, her actual daughter, instead. Then, I switched Elena for Atsushi at the last minute because I think she would've explained it, anyway, and I couldn't possibly do that in five sentences. Ah, well, at least, I've managed to resume doing this challenge, I guess.
