Modly post, icons and the like!

First, let's all congratulate the newest winner of the TNL Supporter Award, werewolfsfan!

Photobucket

Some of you may not remember, or may not even have been around when we first started doing this, but this is an icon given to those who have posted 15 or more recs to TNL. It's just a little thank-you for the hard work and dedication, and for sharing delights with us! :D

As motivation, these are the people who are currently closest to achieving the award:

elvishly: 13 recs so far
cardigankate: 12 recs so far
miamadwyn: 12 recs so far
hobgoblinn: 10 recs so far

There are quite a few people with just under 10, too. There's no pressure or anything! :D I know I and everyone else here appreciates the time and effort people put into only reccing the highest quality fics that they really love. :)

Everyone can check how many recs they've posted at any time by just using the tags list (we all have "reccer: ***" tags). -->

Speaking of which, as there's been a bit of a mix-up in the tag stakes, I will now post the icons of our other three award winners, so if they ever need to, they can quickly pop back to this post (using the "! tnl supporter" tag) to get the image!

(Wildflower4evr, I actually remade this one for you, as I realised your name was slightly too long and had overrun onto a second line in the original one!! *whoops*)

If anyone wants to use any of our other icons, but can't remember where to find them, you can follow this link (which just takes you to the "! icons" tag list!)

ETA: Oh, and, uh, we're a little over a month away from TNL's first birthday!! That will be on the 17th of February. Mark your calender's! ;)

OWL Awards

This is just a reminder that the awards at OWL are kicking off. All stories posted in 2008 are eligible, so that's a lot of reading and nominating we have to do! ;)

The Rules are to be found here.

The list of all OWL fics recced at TNL can be found here (or through the tag list). There are only 18. I think we can do better than that. So, head on over to OWL, find your favourites, nominate them, and then come back and rec them so the rest of us can enjoy! :D

It seems that are our icons are distinctly lacking in display...

So I'm just putting a few of the wonderful icons that valady previously made for us that for some reason or another were either not posted here or just not tagged (I suspect myself of being guilty of the latter). :( I'm tagging them no, and, of course, if you want one, feel free to snag (with credit) and click on the "! icon" tag to see the rest we have (there are quite a few by several different people!!)

Do I even have to say no hot-linking? ;)

Also, I'm sure there are more that are solely TNL icons (not Fest or Award icons) but the plethora of Awards banners in my photobucket meant I could hardly see the wood for the trees.

If anyone has any icons they'd like to contribute, feel free to post them in a comment and I'll add them into the post! :)

New icon & some stats!

Anyone else as turned on by stats as I am? ;)

Well, these are some statistics regarding our tags and memories...

TNL has:

-- 340 memories (that is 340 recs posted)
-- 23 archives tagged (archive: ***)
-- 283 authors tagged (author: *** [not including one or two duplicates we have for people with different names on different sites])
-- 47 reccers tagged (reccer: ***)
-- 86 ships tagged (ship: ***)

To me, that sounds like we've gotten around a lot, eh? ;)

But, if you can find something new, bring a new archive into the fold, a new author, or a new ship, then we have a shiny on offer:

Photobucket

ETA: I thought that it might also be productive if we were to use some tags that denote 'slash', 'femmeslash', 'het', 'rare pair', etc. So expect those to begin appearing tonight! We did have slash and femmeslash as genres, but that's just silly, so they'll be 'ship' tags from now on. :)

ETA2: And now we have more stats!

We have:

-- 32 gen fics
-- 260 het fics
-- 43 slash fics
-- 12 femmeslash fics
-- 39 rare pair fics
-- 6 threesome fics
-- 2 foursome fics
-- 3 incest (in 3somes) fics

More slash and femmeslash is definitely necessary. I shall be on the look-out now over the holidays, particularly as hp_yule_balls  should be having a reveal in the not-too-distant future!

Classics a step too far?

This is just a post to say thank you to those who have taken the poll about Round 2 of the Awards already (if you haven't, it's the third post down right now!). A few people have raised concerns about a Classics Award being outside the 'TNL mission'. Personally, I didn't find that troublesome, as it's a recognition that there are lots of great fics out there and that this isn't just an 'affirmative action' community (*snort*). However, if the majority feel that the notion of a Classics Award round does in some way violate our comm spirit, then I'm not solely wedded to the idea of it, so, of course, we have another poll! :D

Poll #1311538 Classics

Is a Classics Round inherently a violation of the TNL community spirit?

Yes; we shouldn't do a Classics Round, we should do a second round like the first
6(18.2%)
Yes; we shouldn't do any more Awards for a while, I'm pooped with all the awards running
3(9.1%)
No; but I still think we should do a second round just like the first
3(9.1%)
No; I think we should go ahead with the Classics Round
14(42.4%)
No; but I'm pooped with all the awards running, so can we wait until later next year please?
7(21.2%)
Feel free! This is important, as it'll stop me doing any more work on the Classics Round if it turns out that there's a majority position against it. :)

TNL Awards... Round 2: Classics?

So, when we finished Round 1 of the Awards and began the Fest, we were expecting that there would be a second round of the Awards in January. I thought that it might be worthwhile to run a poll now that I've got less work going on and will have time to set everything up! So, poll #0:

Poll #1310771 Would you like to see another Awards?

Well, would you?

Yes
40(90.9%)
No
4(9.1%)
It's okay to click No! :) If you do click No, though, there's no need to go on with the longer poll.

So, the basic idea of the Classic Awards was that, having given a round over to new/underappreciated authors, all those who were ineligible in Round 1 would now be eligible. The following is the sort of set-up that was envisioned:

1) An open nominations procedure: anyone can nominate a story that's eligible (written before 2007 or written after 2007 but too popular to have been eligible last time)
2) An open vote.
3) The top 3 stories in each category from the open vote are then read and judged using the same scoring procedure as in the final round (and probably lots of the same judges too). This would hopefully eliminate some of the danger of having big-names in the Awards who might not have the best stories but have the most 'followers' and thus might win a general vote against a potentially better but less 'followed' story. After all, the whole point of TNL in the first place was to have a stronger voice for stories not by 'big names'!!

So, if you voted Yes to having a Classics Round, then please now take the following two polls about set-up and eligibility!

Poll #1310772 Poll #1: Basic set-up

How would you like to see stories grouped? Bear in mind the possible complexities of arranging stories by more than one feature, which will result in a larger number of categories overall.

5(14.3%)

Should we have a 'Best Author' category, or simply run categories for stories?

Yes
25(67.6%)
No
12(32.4%)

How should 'Best Author' be determined, if we run such a category?

The same way as a best story: nomination, vote, and judging
22(57.9%)
It should be awarded to the author of the story that receives the most nominations
4(10.5%)
It should be awarded to the author of the story that gets the highest marks in the judging phase
12(31.6%)
If you have any other comments/queries/concerns/suggestions, please feel free to post them in comments (which are screened!)

SS/HG fans out there?

Read it? Write it? Love it? Like it?

Ever wondered why dramione has a comm, and SS/HG doesn't? Well, writermerrin  has been wondering too. Please follow this link to their post about the possibility of starting up a SS/HG (or Snape-centric, or Snape-het-centric) comm for us all to hang out at. Feedback would be greatly appreciated; the ship deserves this!

NB

Two teensy things
  1. If you would like to nominate someone to be featured as a Member of the Month candidate, then you can do so here. FIRST you need to click on our userinfo link and take a look at who's a member; after all, it's MEMBER of the Month! ;-) Once you've got someone in mind, please post a comment (all will be screened) including their name and a link to a profile page at an archive (or a LJ account if that's where their fics are). That's all you need to do, but if you want you can provide a short description of why you think they would make an interesting MoTM!
  2. We are 3 recs away from the 303 magic figure. ;-) If you're nominating someone for MoTM, you may as well rec something of theirs too!
That will be all, my dears, except to say that I will be away for a day or so starting tomorrow afternoon. I'll be in transit. That means that unless we reach 303 today or tomorrow morning, then you'll have to wait for me to come back and comment on the winning rec. Sozzle. :(
