Dear Yuletide Writer

Hi! First, let me congratulate you on excellent taste in tiny fandoms. :D I love all these fandoms, so if my optional details fill you with a deep and abiding sense of 'meh' or 'WTF', write what does grab you and I'm sure I will love it.

Things I like: Girls (and women) being awesome. Determination and courage in the face of obstacles. Fantasy worlds extrapolated into their future. Dialogue. Snark. Details of world-building. Characters Figuring Stuff Out (which is what makes me read everything from Hatchet to military SF) and generally being clever and competent. Emotional repression. Farming. Awkward outsiders finding friendship and a place in the world. Epistolary or other documentary narrative. Most of my requests this year are more gen than shippy, but in case it comes up, I like buddy pairings better than antagonist pairings: Ron/Hermione rather than Harry/Draco. I read slash, het and gen.

Things I don't like: Animal harm, incest, rape, explicit torture/physical cruelty, desperately unhappy endings (though bittersweet is fine, if that's where the fic takes you), major character death (other than canon deaths).

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate

Otherwise, happy roughly-five-hours-till-Yuletide! (I have to say, I love being able to edit at will. I was totally futzing with the formatting this morning.)

I am eating guinea fowl with a blackcurrant-apple glaze (based on that being the kind of fruit butter [personal profile] nmarlow gave me for Christmas), roast veg, Smitten Kitchen's broccoli slaw and aligot. I wouldn't mind another vegetable, but all my spinach bolted and I inexplicably didn't buy any carrots. Dessert is homemade strawberry ice cream and strawberries, possibly with some leftover meringues I made on the weekend when I had some spare egg whites, if they're still tasty.

One hour till we find out if I fucked the cooking up.

Also, I just burnt my finger checking on it. /o\

Things I like: Girls (and women) being awesome. Determination in the face of obstacles. F/F slash. M/M slash. Het that doesn't reinforce prescriptive gender roles. Fantasy worlds extrapolated into their future. Dialogue. Snark. Details of world-building. Characters Figuring Stuff Out (which is what makes me read everything from Hatchet to military SF). Awkward outsiders finding friendship and a place in the world. Best friends falling in love without realising. (I like buddy pairings better than antagonist pairings: Ron/Hermione rather than Harry/Draco. Not that I can't be sold on an antagonist pairing.) Epistolary or other documentary narrative.

Things I don't like: Incest, rape, explicit torture/physical cruelty, animal harm, desperately unhappy endings (though bittersweet is fine, if that's where the fic takes you), major character death (other than canon deaths).

Kitchen meme

Via several people, most recently [personal profile] labellementeuse:

Bold the ones you have and use at least once a year, underline the ones you use at least once a month, italicise the ones you have and don't use, strike through the ones you have had but got rid of. And add any items that you have that aren't on the list:

I wonder how many pasta machines, breadmakers, juicers*, blenders, deep fat fryers, egg boilers, melon ballers, sandwich makers, pastry brushes, cheese knives, electric woks, miniature salad spinners**, griddle pans, jam funnels, meat thermometers, filleting knives, egg poachers, cake stands, garlic crushers, martini glasses, tea strainers, bamboo steamers, pizza stones, coffee grinders, milk frothers, piping bags, banana stands, fluted pastry wheels, tagine dishes, conical strainers, rice cookers, steam cookers, pressure cookers, slow cookers, spaetzle makers, cookie presses, gravy strainers, double boilers (bains marie), sukiyaki stoves, ice cream makers, fondue sets, healthy-grills, home smokers, tempura sets, tortilla presses, electric whisks, apple corers***, apple slicers, electric skillets, meat tenderisers, mortar and pestle, pastry blenders, french-fry cutters, waffle makers, candy thermometers, stick blenders, vegetable choppers, silicone cupcake cases and baking mats and food processors languish dustily at the back of the nation's cupboards?

What's the formatting for 'my grandma has one and I covet it?' Jam funnels make everything so much less messy. I do have a jar lifter, which I haven't used yet because there hasn't been anything to preserve since I got it, but I predict it will be useful. I would also love a tortilla press and a pizza stone.

I need to use my icecream maker.

*If you mean one of those things with a fluted round pointy bit that you squeeze lemons on. I don't have a machine that juices carrots or anything.

**Wrapping the lettuce in a teatowel, going out on the deck and spinning it around my head like a lasso is more fun.

***They come into their own when you're making 5kg of apples into a distressingly small amount of sauce.

Is anyone else watching Continuum? Getting attached to Canadian shows that look expensive is usually a bad idea, but it's being quite clever and fun about time travel, and the future looks awesome.

Also, anyone on Twitter has heard this at length, but Collapse )
