Anew

The immediate influx of information was processed in an instant, visual sensors recalibrating in moments alongside faint echoes of auditory material, coming together to construct something that almost began to resemble a reactive consciousness. The urge to blink was overwhelming, and impossible to fulfil, as a panic rose in the back of this mind, now unable to take a breath to steady themselves. Indiscernible time passed as an attempt to recall basic functions was made, and as the horror of the redundancy of many of those functions became apparent.

Moving?

That, at least, could be done. The limbs felt heavy, but also light; a contradiction that was filed away to be addressed later. Heavy metallic impacts sounded throughout the room as steps were taken forward, each movement taking titanic effort, the cognitive dissonance of the situation enforcing a slow and painful progression. The body itself was a marvel; moving with almighty ease, at odds with the mind.

The Body?

The thought occurred to examine itself, as the mind was reminded of its personhood. They paused, looking down to see immaculate metal, a flawless shell of hardened armour, limbs and digits that moved with precision that would have been utterly unachievable before -

Before?

Yes, there had been a before; their frail body assaulted and weakened by constant bouts of radiation. Studies; they were a biologist? A Cryptek of some form at least, of some caliber. The problem of their species was one that they were intensely attuned to, persistently seeking to solve the problems of such a frail species. And seeking to solve their own body, a gross, gendered thing that was only any good for the mind that it housed. But such research had been for naught; it had been announced a new form would be given to all, through new methods given by the Star Gods. Immortality! Enough time to study, study, study… they recall, almost, trudging grimly towards a bio-foundry of immense size, something lingering in the sky above it; something hungry.

Hungry?

There was something missing. A deep, aching loss somewhere deep within this creature’s awareness. Once again, a tide of incongruent impulses threatened to destroy the newly recreated mind; a suffocation, a horrible phantom itch, a knowledge that they would never blink again. A desire to scream was translated into a digital groan that echoed out into the space, bouncing off of the walls. The noise was enough to distract, momentarily, for with it came the remembrance of…

A Voice?

It was rough, grating, resonant, the audio that emitted from the faceplate sounded as though it had been produced by a machine. Because of course it had; this mind of a living thing, housed in an eternal carapace of metal, a carapace which now straightened up to examine itself more intently. There had been an interruption, but now as they became more properly aware of the living machine that they had become, there was an odd reaction of the mind as the full reality of the situation descended upon them. They could not breathe, or cry, or blink, or swallow, or relax, or taste; there was even this great hollow that they felt, and yet - the body was whole. It was perfect. There were no discernable flaws whatsoever, no aches, no unwanted characteristics inflicted upon them by the chance of their birth; only the purity of a metallic form. As they turned to view themself in a more reflective piece of metal in the wall, an impassive metallic face started back at them. Where the mouth would be, a faded green light lit up, shining on and off sporadically as rough, joyful mechanical laughter echoed out throughout the chamber.

When people get a little too gung-ho about-

wait. cancel post. gung-ho cannot be English. where did that phrase come from? China?

ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.

That’s…wild. What was I talking about?

OR. Or. And hear me out. People should just use their ability to read to stop and read ratings, archive warnings, additional tags, and summaries on fics to know what they're getting into instead of expecting social media and archives to do it for them <3 or better yet, they should use the very easy to use and very accessible filters that ao3 provides to filter out the ratings, archive warnings, ships, and/or additional tags they don't want to read <3

The parking attendant paused by the double-length bay. Intended for mobile homes and cars with trailers, it was currently occupied by a sleeping dragon.

No parts of it extended beyond the lines, and the paper ticket was clearly displayed, impaled on a horn.

The parking attendant moved on.
