Getting To Forever
Isiah 6:8
They bury him on a hillside in Arlington, next to his brother, on a bright summer's day.
There are speeches and readings, glimpses into a remarkable life from those who knew him best, before his casket makes its last journey. A riderless horse leads a flag-draped caisson, attended by honor guards and twenty-one gun salutes, small thanks from a grateful nation.
Millions throng the streets to witness the funeral procession of the brave man who took a bullet meant for President Sinclair.
Only a select few know that Colby Granger was also the love of David Sinclair's life.
Give Me A Sign
The paperwork for his new posting as Supervisor, Violent Crimes of the Washington office is on his desk, filled except for Colby's name on the dotted line.
He's not torn; he just needs a sign, any kind of sign.
It comes in the form of a small white envelope, a plain gold band tucked inside. There is no note, not that he needs any. He's been waiting for this since the day he returned here.
Colby slips the ring he gave David into his pocket and signs the transfer form.
There is nothing left for him in L.A. anymore.
"...and following orders,"
"I can't believe you," David growls, hands balled at his sides, teeth clenched. "After all we've been through, after how much I trusted you... Dammit, Granger, why?"
Colby opens his mouth to explain, to say he's sorry, to beg for another chance, but the words die on his lips at the cold fury in David's eyes. There's no forgiveness for what he's done, no going back, no rebuilding the trust he's shattered one time too many.
What makes it worse, however, is that this time he wasn't following any orders from Uncle Sam; just those from his own cheating heart.
Introductions
"Everyone, this is Colby Granger. He's our newest agent. Colby, this is Megan Reeves, our resident behavioral analyst, Professor Charlie Eppes, math genius, who occasionally consults for us, and Jordan Black, on loan from OC."
"Nice to meet you, Megan, Jordan, Charlie," Colby says, smiling, shaking hands and making small talk for a while until something tickles at the back of his mind and he turns to Don. "Isn't there another man on your team?" he asks. "A Saintjohn, Sinclair, something like that?"
Don's smile turns brittle. "Yeah. David Sinclair. He was killed in a meth house raid last week."
Too Good Is True
David and Colby watch as Lisa Megan Eppes dances with her groom, both completely lost in each other.
"She's beautiful," David says softly.
"Gets it from her Dad," Colby replies, smiling at him.
"She might have my looks, but her strength, her courage? That's all her Papa."
Colby's answering smile takes David's breath away, even after nearly thirty years.
"We did good, didn't we?" he asks.
David thinks about friendships found in unexpected places, about trust broken and rebuilt, about a lifetime of love and laughter.
"Yeah, babe," he said, drawing his husband in for a kiss, "we did good."

Notes And Confessions
Date: 2009-03-04 03:17 pm (UTC)I can't remember where I saw it, but I read once that between pre-marital breakups, death, divorce, and unhappy marriages, less than 2 couples in 10 say they've reached 'happily ever after.'
Isiah 6:8: For those of you unfamiliar with the Bible, the verse is as follows:
"Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?"
Then I said, "Here I am. Send me."
Seemed a fitting tribute for a Colby who died protecting the man he loved. I'm not sure whether they met at the FBI, or whether this Colby was a Secret Service agent who fell for his Presidential charge, but either way I didn't think it would be an open relationship; (potential) progress on DADT and LGBT rights aside, we've still got a LONG way to go before an openly gay President could take office.
Give Me A Sign: *winces* Ouch, poor Colby. Not only did he nearly die, he also lost the love of his life. *is nibbled by the Colby/Claudia bunny [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] sicced on her* No! Bad bunny! Back!
"... and following orders,": Before the Colby fangirls can kill me, let me reiterate that this is NOT canon, this is an AU where Colby slept with what's-her-name, Potter, while in a relationship with David. I don't think he would, but then again I didn't think he'd sleep with her in canon, either. *whacks him*
Introductions: Rosencrantz is DEAD! *sobs*
Too Good Is True: I so blame this on Colby's comment on David's daughter in 5.16 Cover Me. You just know Lisa has both of them wrapped around her little finger. Plus a kid who's got David's looks and Colby's gift for snark? *dies of cute*
My friend D was telling me that as writers, our moods tend to be reflected in the works we create. Well, I reckon y'all can guess what kind of mood I was in today, huh? *kicks RL on general principle*
I was initially going to end it at just the four AUs, but then I decided that I wasn't going to let myself (and my Muse) wallow in negativity. The last drabble was the hardest to write, but for all that I think I like it the best.

Re: Notes And Confessions
Date: 2009-03-05 01:45 pm (UTC)Well, since this is pretty much the reaction I was aiming for I can't apologize, lol. But I'm glad it made an impact!
Thanks! If college continues to be as idiotic as it was today, though, I'm going to be done by the end of this week. I was so bored I wrote about ten drabbles in three hours... *has a month more of this. DO. NOT. WANT.*

Date: 2009-03-05 11:19 am (UTC)Especially the one where David gave back the ring...I understand why he did it, but somehow that almost hurt worse than the ones where one of them died.
*wince* on the one where he died before they even met.
You know I'm not a big slash fan, but these were wonderful, nice work.

Date: 2009-03-05 02:07 pm (UTC)The funny thing is, I've got an idea for a continuation of the one with the ring where Colby finds happiness with someone else. I get why David was angry, but IMHO he should have had a little more faith in his best friend, especially after the whole Ben Ellis mess... /ramble
*winces with you* [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] had a wonderful bit in one of her fics about the incredible odds of all the N3 crew being alive and happy. I just... decided to screw with said odds a bit. Colby'll never know just what he missed... *pets him*
*blushes* Aww, thank you! That's a hell of a compliment!
PS: Did you get my mail re: the next part of Dinner Party?

Date: 2009-03-05 11:56 pm (UTC)Ben Ellis mess--man I'm too tired to figure that one out...Yeah for Colby, I guess, finding someone else. He needs to be happy. Poor boy's been through so much.
I gotta go back and catch up on her stuff...but yeah. That was harsh...really harsh.
Welcome. I always seem drawn to your work cuz you do so well with these.
Um, no I didn't get the last email and I checked my spam folder too.

Date: 2009-03-05 09:19 pm (UTC)I admit I was thrown at the end, wondering how David could have had a child with an Eppes when they're all male, but then I realized duh, this was *after* she'd married so she apparently married an Eppes. /headdesk/ I think the Megan threw me... Ah well. Just goes to show I should bother to wake up before I try reading fic! /kicks self/
Yay on your 100! I look forward to congratulating when you reach that lofty goal. :-)

*grins* Thankies! You might be doing that sooner than you think. I think there was some crack in those cookies you fed my Muse. She's been jabbering non-stop ever since...
