Scenes From The Multiverse
Baseball
"Hi, my name is Charlie Eppes."
"Eppes? You wouldn't be related to the Don Eppes who plays for the Boston Red Sox, would you?"
Charlie almost says no, but at the last moment his sense of family wins out over his sense of self-preservation.
"Yes, he's my brother."
"Wow, really? That's so cool! I saw him in that game against the Yankees, he kicked ass! Man, that home run... Do you think he'd sign a card for me?"
Charlie sighs and lets the adulation wash over him, wishing that for once he was the Eppes sibling people talked about.
Bug
This route is supposed to be safe, but there's a bug in the translation software, and they end up being target practise for al-Quaeda rocket launchers.
Colby's trapped in a burning Humvee, steel tight around his shoulder, the smell of burning flesh in the air. He's ready to see his Dad again when an arm reaches in and pulls him out.
Later, he tells his saviour, "Thanks, man. You saved my life. I owe you."
Staff Sergeant Don Eppes just smiles. "Nothing you wouldn't have done in my place, Granger. Buy me a beer and we'll call it even."
Sidekick
"This bastard is canny, courageous and smart." Megan hands each member of her team a thick folder.
"He took a small drug op and turned it into the biggest crime empire in the US. Add that to his second-in-command's background and connections, and we have ourselves a very dangerous pair of criminals. They've already taken over several cities, and now they're coming to Los Angeles."
She flicks the switch for the LCD screen, and two good-looking men in their mid-thirties grin back at the room.
"Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Chessmasters- David Sinclair and Colby Granger."
Data
Don flips through the new agent's file. Nothing out of the ordinary. Carter's twenty-nine, fresh from Quantico, a specialist in hand-to-hand combat. Afghanistan vet, too, which could be a problem. Still, it's an impressive resume, and Don can't afford to be choosy.
"Agent Carter reporting as ordered, sir," a voice says from behind him.
Don looks at his new agent, takes in the ramrod-stiff posture, the carefully blank expression, the steely glint in the green eyes.
"I'm Don Eppes. Nice to meet you, Agent Carter," he says, smiling down at her. "May I call you Colbie?"

Notes And Confessions
Date: 2009-02-26 11:00 am (UTC)Baseball: In a different world, Charlie's the one growing up in Don's shadow, the younger boy who's smart and studious but no match for the star pro baseball player. Charlie isn't Dr. Charles Eppes, genius, here; he's just Charlie, Don's younger brother.
Bug: Remember in 4.01 Trust Metric Colby says he wishes someone else had pulled him out of that Humvee? Well, in this 'verse Don did. Oh, the possibilities! Especially because Don is an honorable man who wouldn't hold saving his life above Colby's head... Somehow I think this Colby has a much easier life. *g*
Sidekick: OK, who thought I'd made the brothers Eppes evil? I thought about it, but since Emma's gone down that road (and how) with Vice and LG's done evil!Charlie, I figured it was time to give Rosencrantz and Guildenstern a shot. Imagine a world where David took a couple of left turns on the way out of the Bronx, and a Colby thoroughly broken by Afghanistan. *shudders* On second thought, I'd rather not.
Data: *giggles* I love this, simply because I am an absolute h0r for misdirection. *evil grin*

If ever I write bizarre Christmas Carol-esque fic featuring Colby on the other side of one of these things, I'm blaming you.
*grins* Thanks for the comment, and the plot bunny!

Date: 2009-02-26 05:11 pm (UTC)The moment the idea for this series came to me, I knew it what I wanted for Baseball. It just seems fitting that somewhere out there is a universe where *Don's* the famous one and Charlie the ordinary math teacher (or FBI agent, or architect, or what have you.)
Colby's life in the 'Bug' universe? Pretty good, actually. Dwayne is killed in the Humvee accident, so no Chinese spy crap. Colby and Don go out for that beer, end up dating and falling in love. They enlist in Delta together, both career Army. Get married after DADT gets abolished and live happily ever after, pretty much. Oh, and Colby finally gets his shot at General's stars that he gave up in one of my other fics. *might just have to write some of this out*
Meep! Don't die! *does CPR on you*
'Data' and 'Sidekick'? *laughs evilly* I wrote those just to screw with my readers' heads and I'm glad to see it worked.
*blushes* Thank you! I'm glad I could give you a good start to your day.

Don did good.
something tells me Colby's the second in command. (the ties being the ones to China, right?)

Date: 2009-02-26 05:13 pm (UTC)LOL, I hadn't even thought about his Chinese connections, just his military ones. I love it when my readers discover new things in my fic!
And girl!Colby is love. *is tempted to write more of her*
Thanks for the comment!

Date: 2009-02-26 04:58 pm (UTC)That was my favorite but the rest were interesting as well. I like the Charlie being in Don's shadow a lot too! I wish they would d something more with Don and baseball. He keep talking about it. I think he should coach or something. :) But that's just me.
Well done my dear.

Date: 2009-02-27 12:41 am (UTC)*grins* I wanted something that played on the colour theme as well as being a good inside joke between the two of them. (In my head it was only after Colby rescued David's ass from a drug deal gone bad that things really started to click) And you know they'd SO kick as much ass as troublemakers as they do as good guys. Lucky for the world that that Don and Charlie are on the side of the angels...
Ooh, now I have a mental image of big tough Don being a Little League coach. *squees* And Charlie being in Don's shadow... well, in my mind it's a weird sort of justice. *g*
*bows* Thank you!

Date: 2009-02-26 08:16 pm (UTC)Ages ago I had this idea for mini-AUs - ficlets where I just would write short AU one shots exploring different universes and this is very much like that. I've done a few (like one where Don does become a big baseball star) but I love to see what other people come up with!
I hope that you consider doing more of these and that other people pick up on the concept and do them too.
Fun!

Date: 2009-02-27 12:54 am (UTC)*thinks* Oooh, I remember the one you're talking about! I always did wonder what happen to the others in that 'verse... *puppy eyes* More mini-AUs, peaz?
I've learned by now never to cross my Muse, so we'll see about more of these. This is a fun sandbox to play in, so who knows? She might want to return...
Thanks for the lovely comment, Emma! Much appreciated!

Date: 2009-02-26 08:18 pm (UTC)I thought the HP fandom had broken me when it concerned AUs, but apparently not, lol.
These were brilliant. My favorite was.... (can you guess?! I bet you can...) Bug! I enjoyed Baseball a lot too, heehee. Poor, normal Charlie... /pats him/
General's stars! Doooo iiiiit! You know you wanna! :D
no subject
Date: 2009-02-27 01:04 am (UTC)Oh man, HP AUs are scary, scary things, LOL. Did you ever read Harry Potter and the Heirs of Corvus by Lady Treason? That was just so crazy cool, on so many levels...
Bug! *dances* I love this little slice of happy. The only reason I'm hesitant to write it is there's such a radical difference from canon and I hate world-building. Although you gotta wonder what Alan would say to having a son in the military... *ponders* Is there anything in particular you'd like to see in this world? Apart from the General's stars, that is? (and I so bet Don pins those on Colby...)
*hugs* Thanks for the comment, and the bunnies!

Date: 2009-02-27 12:36 am (UTC)This was great. I read it this morning, but didn't have time to comment. And I have other comments for you for other stuff.
I loved this multiverse idea...it was totally cool...would love to see it expanded. Especially the rescue by Don one and also the female Colbie.

[Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] is already enabling me re: Bug-verse. *groans* Is there anything in particular you'd like to see, either in this 'verse or with girl!Colby?
Thanks for the comment, hon!

Date: 2009-10-29 08:06 pm (UTC)1. A AU 'verse where Bug continues as the back story, and then they meet up in the FBI.
2. Another AU where Colby is in fact Colbie, and then the Don/Colbie ship continues :D
Just food for thought.
...
