summerofthe69The theme calendar for 2026 is now live!
This year's themes were based on the results of the 2026 Theme Poll. For the most part, the least popular of the winning themes will start on June 16th, and we'll end with the most popular on August 18th; this should allow participants the maximum amount of time to create something for the top themes.
This year we'll also be officially doing double themes! Not for the first few weeks, however; due in part to a number of ties, including a five way tie for the least popular of the potentially winning options, as well as wanting to ease into things a bit, our first double theme of this year will be on June 30th. In the event of similarly significant ties in the future, I plan to build in extra time for a run-off.
Themes for 2026's Summer of the 69 will be active for approximately two weeks, starting from posting time. At the end of a week's time, a new theme will be posted; a week after the new theme is posted, a post rounding up links to works created for the previous theme will be made, at which point the previous theme will officially close until September 7th. This will give all but the final two themes approximately two weeks for participants to post fills.

June 16th - Alternate Sexy Parts 69: From trans and genderswap to Omegaverse and Xenokink, and beyond!
June 23rd - Antigravity 69: Did the gravity malfunction? Can they breathe underwater? Are they just so lost in the sauce that they forgot which way is up? You decide! AND Fantasy 69: Celebrating fantastical settings and characters, or delving into fantasies, it's time to make some magic
June 30th - Size Difference 69: Whether from a height difference or some other size difference, there's logistics at play! AND Body Worship 69: Eating it like it's ambrosia
July
July 7th - Crossover 69: Sometimes you just want to take hot characters from different fandoms and smoosh them together AND Kinky 69: When the position is too vanilla on its own, it's time to mix in other kinks
July 14th - Plot Device 69: Any plot circumstances in which the characters are required to go down on each other AND Surface Level 69: No penetration, please!
July 21st - Selfcest 69: Clones, time travel, inter-dimensional rifts, and other ways to have sex with yourself AND Sloppy Seconds 69: Where it's the second consecutive sexual activity one or more of the parties is involved in
July 28th - Accommodations: Working with disabilities, sensory issues, and sexual disorders AND Competitive 69: Who can make the other come first?
August
August 4th -Clothed 69: When you won't let what you're wearing get in the way AND Monsterfucker 69: Humans aren't the only ones who like going down
August 11th - Greater Than 69: A 69 involving three or more people, directly or indirectly AND Sopping Wet 69: From the poolside to the beach, indoors or caught in the rain, engaging in sports that take place in the water or in watersports, it's time to get drenched
August 18th - Fighting or Fucking 69: It all started when Person A pinned Person B... AND Tropefest 69: There was only one bed, they were roommates, and sex pollen? Yes please!
August 25th - Back End 69: Who says the front parts should get all the attention? It's time to get some assplay in 69-land!
September
September 1st - Failed 69: You're both there, you're both trying, but one of you is doing way too good of a job, and the other can't cope, damnit
September 6th - Closing Ceremonies
September 7th - Amnesty begins
Special note: As a reminder, the final theme, Failed 69, includes any themes that didn't make the cut during voting. So if one of your absolute favorites didn't get enough votes to be selected for one of 2026's official themes, you'll still have the opportunity to create something for it this year! In addition, this will mean that all themes suggested for this year will be options for Amnesty.

Edit: A kind participant pointed out that I missed Clothed 69 when I was tallying up the votes 🤦♀️ I've since gone back through and reconfigured the theme calendar so Clothed 69 is in its rightful place. As a result, about half of the themes from before August got moved up a week; in order not to screw up anyone's timelines too badly, I plan to extend the deadline for those themes a third week. I hope this is an acceptable compromise for everyone!

Date: 2026-06-17 04:32 am (UTC)Between you and me, I extended the theme timeline from one week to two in the fest's first year solely so I could finish my own WIP for the first theme on time 😂 I really wanted to start the community off strong and have something available ASAP! That said, if things don't work out and you miss the deadline for the first theme, you may be able to fit it in under a later one! If all else fails, the final theme, Failed 69, works for anything you (ahem) failed to finish on time, and then Amnesty starts right after that. Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to linking your fic in a roundup—hopefully the first one, but any is good!

Date: 2026-06-17 05:12 am (UTC)I'm basically finished, so I hope to post this week, but I went through the themes just in case, and Clothed 69 didn't make it to the list? (It seems to have lots of votes too?) That's the one theme where it would definitely fit, other than First Time. :D
Guardian is my #1 fandom, and my WIP is unsurprisingly Guardian too. :D So I'm super biased, but I definitely recommend it, especially if you're already interested! ♡ (Both the novel and the drama, though in completely different ways!)

One of the downsides of the theme poll is that I go through and count everything myself, and it looks like this year is the year I missed something. Well, I'll just have to give the theme poll another going over and update the theme schedule, then!
I'm currently wading through MXTX's stuff, but I definitely want to give it a try! As for which to go with, I've already bought the books, but if either the show or the books are more lighthearted or less heavy/grim/angsty than the other, I may have to go with that one first; my emotional regulation skills are terrible, and I tend to end up feeling stuff from shows and such for like. Hours afterwards. Not a bad thing for comedy, but kind of a problem for tragedy!
Anyway, 'scuze me while I go fix up that calendar 👍

Oooof yeah, if that's the criteria, the books are definitely the right choice!
Both versions are lighthearted in the way that there's quite a lot of irreverent humor and slice-of-life friendship in the middle of all the high stakes stuff, but
[spoilers that are as vague as I can make them, but it's about the ending so they may count as major spoilers regardless!]
if you also want a happy ending, go with the books. :) And if you want to avoid tragic endings altogether, you may want to skip the show. (But then again 99% of the fandom ignores the ending, so that's doable too. :D)
