Dowsing, a little 101
Dowsing
Dowsing (deuten, to declare, douse, to plunge) refers to techniques for finding water or other things by using a dowsing instrument, such as a dowsing rod. The use of the dowsing rod, a Y-shaped forked stick or rod used to find water and hidden objects is probably as old as humankind. The dowsing rod is still is used commercially by many well-drillers and contractors who have to dig around underground pipes and lines. A good dowser/well-driller can find good, pure water 95% of the time.
Dowsing is searching for anything by projecting an intent of what is desired and receiving confirmation or non-confirmation feedback through the body, usually by the movements of a dowsing instrument. It is a form of clairvoyance, the ability to see at any given moment what is happening elsewhere. Our senses are really more powerful than we think. Because our physical and psychological apparatus is designed to satisfy our desires, they realize their potential only to the extent we utilize them.
Divining is a close synonym of dowsing and gets to the root of what dowsing is all about. Divining comes from the word divinus meaning "of, or by, or for a god, the gods, also inspired by them." Hence, divining is a spiritual practice -- the success of which rests on a divine state of mind.
There are many books on the history of dowsing, the exploits of successful dowsers and the many uses and applications of the dowsing technique. I call dowsing a technique, rather than a science, because technology is proven by results and nothing else. Science requires theory, explanation and proof. Needless to say, proof of dowsing in the academic world is slow in coming. Why? Primarily because dowsing is not a physics problem, where the people performing the experiment can be virtually excluded from affecting the results. Dowsing can't work without a person. The circumstances and people that the dowser is operating with have a definite influence on the results.
Dowsing is simply a natural tool that enables you to amplify what you are already perceiving, but simply have not bothered to pay attention to before. It is a handle on the abstract world of feeling, intuition and the sacred.
Dowsing is a very important technique for anyone working with sacred or haunted spaces. Dowsing can be used to:
Locate underground water lines and springs. The direction of flow, depth and quantity of flow (gallons per minute) can also be ascertained.
Locate ley lines and their direction of flow.
Find power centers, places where the Earth's field alters human consciousness.
Determine if a water line or ley line is having a negative effect on the health of the people living or working above the line.
Communicate with and receive guidance from Devas and Angels.
Map underground earth energies in order to design and build sacred spaces.

What can we call you? You can call me Threnody. I don't usually use my given name on the Internet.
How long have you been practicing? On and off for 17 years or so. 'Slacking' might be a better term than 'practicing,' though.
How did you come to realize your abilities? By screwing around with them . . . a process of one part experimentation, one part improvisation, and one part having read too much lame fantasy fic in my misspent youth.
What skills do you have a knack for? Draining energy; de-charging charged items; moving energy around generally (though not necessarily getting it to do what I want when it gets there); Tarot; trancing; aspecting. The penny dropped a few months ago and I realized that my lifelong discomfort in groups is due to empathy. Go figure.
What's the gist of your belief structure? Loosely pagan; I started off Wiccan years ago and have drifted quite far from it, though not into any trad in particular. I am thoroughly comfortable with the existence of magic and the idea of reincarnation. I'm fairly comfortable with Otherkin and related beings. I value open minds but also value rational thinking, so I reserve the right to not automatically believe everything anyone tells me.
G'day mate! may I buy your telephone?
Oooh kay.
What can we call you?
My real name is Craig buti often go by other names suck as Gyark or Ondo (and if you can find out why just by looking at them and my real name i would take my hat off to you...... if I had a hat, lol)
How long have you been practicing?
I've been parcticing working with energy since end of grd 6 beginning of grd 7 and I'm now finished grd 12 (last year b4 uni over here in Oz) so whats that? About 6 years? yeah something like that.
How did you come to realize your abilities?
Well, it sortof first started when I first started loking up stuff about magic online at about the end of grd 6 (as i said) and i came across some exercises for drawing up energy from the earth and about chakras and such and I've just kept reading interesting things from several different systems of magic. I dont usually actually practice fullon ritual magic of pritty much any sort but i do enjoy working with the energy side of things like in everyday life.
What skills do you have a knack for?
Well, I have a smattering of empathy and telepathy but neither are really totally under my consious control. I can feel energy radiating off crystals (and mobile phones for that matter too). I can make energy balls in my hands, do shieldings and cloakings (which dont make me invisible but... maybe a little less noticible) and I can put energy into and out of things - like rocks, figurines and peoples bodies - i can sortof do energy work on people through massage (I am told i am quite good at this but only usually after a bit of prodding to wake them up from the relaxation). It seems to be just a general ability to manipulate energy on its own plane. I cannot, however, actually cause any physical changes/reactions with this. I guess i havent realy worked at it enough though so i'm really expecting very much from it at this point.
Whats the gist of your belief structure?
Ah, the tricky one.
I believe that everything is actually nothing, we just think it is something and that our beliefs define our realitites. To put it more graphically: our lives, worlds and realitites are fragile beautiful structures made of glass, crystal and sugar crystals hanging in a void, a nothing, attached to nothing with no reference points not attached to the structures. It's a bleek way of looking at things, maybe, but it can be at the same time very liberating. It lets you choose your own way through life because if you're gonna live a be living a lie then it might as well be a lie that you like and enjoy living.
It's something like that anyway.
I hope my tardyness will be excused and my ..um.. length makes up the time I took. I look foward to reading all everyone has to say.

How long have you been practicing? I've been practicing for about 2 years.
How did you come to realize your abilities? *This one's kind of long* I know this probably goes with the next question, but I seem to have a knack when it comes to manipulating energy. I can make hot air cold, and cold air hot. My mom always used to turn the heat off at night. My feet would get cold. One night I got tired of it, and began to rub my feet. They were FREEZING and they got warm in about 10 seconds. I started doing that, and then one night, they just would not get warm (because my hands were cold too!) so I started thinking about the desert, and sure enough, warmth began to come out. It was great. It worked the same way with the the cold. And you know, I didn't really think much about getting myself warm. But during the summer, I was at band camp *no band camp jokes XD* during the summer, and it was hot. I was breaking for lunch, and I began thinking about myself in freezing water. I then got really cold, and cool energy was coming out of my hands. It made me alot of friends, I'll tell ya that.
So, once I got my computer I went online and researched it. It led me to energy manipulation, which led me to psychic studies, which led me to magick.
What skills do you have a knack for?
Pyrokinesis
Cryokinesis
Empathy (It seems like everyone has it, and I know for a fact that I do)
Making myself less noticable (Invisibility)**
Healing
Whats the gist of your belief structure? I believe there is a God and Goddess. I was never Christian or anything, and I always considered myself neutral until I discovered Wicca. Well, that pretty much sums it up.
I'll post more on my experiences later.
(no subject)
i meditated last night and cleansed myself and travelled along a road in my mind, along the river which i see my visions. On the left i saw a black haired girl with light eyes, on the right i saw my sister, either miscarrying or having the child. Though i am so connected with the latter situation that i may not be receiving a vision so much as manifesting a fear.
After the meditation i executed a divination with my tarot cards, as to the nature of the girl. I received several good responses.
the latter part of my meditative vision saw me in a dark room, so dark i couldn't tell you that it was exactly a room at all. I stood before a bed of snakes, long black serpents with sharp teeth and venomous lips. I ran my hand over their heads, they did not bite me. A low, feminine voice said
you must befriend the serpents.
As i began the meditation i thought of what could possibly stand in my way, interfere with my own quest toward inner peace. this is the supposed response.
aside from all this, i have a question.
After the visions seemingly ceased, I found myself sitting in a grove with small stone benches. I sat on one of these for am moment, beneath the sunshine. I then rose and walked through the forest. I walked up the steps of a tall stone tower. I was pale and clothed in dark clothes, silk so black it seemed to suck in the light. In the highest room of the tower sat a magician with a white curtain behind him.
I nodded to him, he smiled.
Hello nightfox, he said.
He gestured with his wand and the curtains parted.
I stepped into a silver-coloured room with two pillars forming a gateway at the far end. One pillar was light, the other dark. A bronze circle lay ingrained in the floor. In front of the pillars sat A woman clothed in white and blue, clothes so light they seemed to be moonlight. She wore a silver crescent on her head inlaid with nine moonstones.
i disrobed and knelt in the circle, naked.
I have no name. I said
I renounce myself, that I may enter and be purified. I said
So mote it be. she said.
I looked up and she had vanished. Between the pillars was a six-pointed star, the symbol came to me to mean the masculine and feminine energies. In the midst of this was a blue eye. I made my way to the gateway, but could not pass through. My stomach and my head hurt so bad that i had to suck in my breath and return to my bed. What does this mean? and how can i Avoid such physical difficulties in the future?
I've read about this, and i hear that its perfectly normal for the body to reach a certain point where it gets scared that it is getting left behind.
Understand i haven't meditated in quite a while and just resumed the practice two nights previous.
Energy Exercises
When I was first beginning energy work, I did the age old exercise of rubbed my hands briskly together to build the energy, then form it into a ball. When I began dowsing, I first began with a pendulum which I had to program with "yes" and "no" movements. Then I gradually moved to dowsing rods and practiced dowsing the waterline from my well to my house.
What about you? What sort of things have you done?
~Heidi
