I apparently live in a place where there are are a lot of indoor/outdoor cats. I'm not quite sure why I see so many cats. I guess there are just a lot of people with indoor/outdoor cats here (oof - mixed feelings). I live in an apartment with no yard (the building itself occupies the yard) but since I live on the second floor, I look out over multiple neighbours' yards. I love this. I look at my yard constantly when I am home. First thing in the morning, all day if I work from home, with my desk set up so I look out, one last time before bed - primarily for birding and just general enjoyment of the outdoors but, increasingly in the last few months, also for cats. I guess I am outside all the time because I walk to and from the train station, I bird all the time, plus I play ingress, I get groceries on foot, etc. Also okay yes I do randomly pspsps on the street sometimes. I see so many that my friend suggested I start a bingo of cats.

Here is a list:

Calico cat, mostly white with scattered orange and tabby spots - Jenny - very friendly, learned her name via tag and also a poster on the street
Big plush grey cat - no idea, often plopped in the yard now
Big fluffy orange cat - probably lives down the street - this cat I have seen for the longest but have no idea who he is
Small white cat with tabby on head & raccoon tail - Luna, owned by the convenience store
White-and-orange, orange saddle - Noisy
Fluffy tabby-and-white, very thin with age, now deceased - Sarah (learned her name bc she only hung out right by her home and I actually talked to the humans who lived there on occasion). She lived till 18!!! but I miss her and when I pass by her place I still reflexively look for her under the bush she liked. I petted her so many times because she would trot to the pavement and let you admire her.
Fluffy large black cat - probably lives near park
Tabby with white paws and white sliver on back - new, I only started seeing them a week or two ago
Dilute tortie/calico - new within a few months, don't know name

But yeah a few days ago I went to get groceries and as I was walking by I distinctly saw Noisy disappear into someone's yard.

Then there are the cats in windows:

Ollie & Luna, the asymmetric and symmetric tuxies in the window (also learned from talking to the neighbour)
A nondynamic duo of a tortie and a tabby tuxie, always sleeping in a bed in the window
White-and-orange shorthair cat, plopped in the window

I have no conclusion for this entry. CATS. (Please keep your cat indoors!)

Io ad oggi posso affermare con convinzione ed in maniera lucida e razionale i motivi per i quali non c’è molta felicità da parte mia. È tutto qua il nocciolo della questione. Io non ho ad un certo punto iniziato a pensare in maniera negativa nei miei confronti, ma ho da sempre pensato solo in maniera negativa nei miei confronti. Con tutte le variazioni che ci sono state durante il percorso, ma il filo conduttore alla fine è sempre stato questo. Per questo motivo, allora, per me non funzionano i compitini di tutte le psicologie facili e veloci, non funziona scrivere su un quaderno che io valgo e poi inizio a crederci come se fossi stato illuminato. Il lavoro che dovrei fare sarebbe innanzitutto quello di inquadrare nella sua totalità la struttura del pensiero, prendere ogni pezzo e smontarlo per poi ricostruire un nuovo modo di parlare di me che corrisponde poi al modo in cui percepisco me e la mia esistenza. Perché nessuna buona volontà o nessun affetto mi dimostrerà mai che io sono uno capace, valido, all’altezza. Non c’è da dimostrare proprio un bel niente perché non si tratta di una cosa che non credo ma di una cosa che ho mai sfiorato col pensiero, e non si tratta nemmeno di cancellare delle frasi sbagliate che ad un certo punto ho iniziato a fare mie e scriverci sopra quelle nuove perché quelle frasi “sbagliate” sono cresciute assieme a me, hanno iniziato a formularsi appena il pensiero ha trovato l’ausilio delle parole, sono la mia essenza.


Non c’è, dunque un errore da correggere nel testo, è l’intera trama che va smontata e riscritta daccapo. Ma fin quando tenderò a dimenticare, fin quando non riuscirò a ricordare non vedo come si possa fare questo lavoro di ristrutturazione.

So next/this year I'm assigned to Wimbledon, a kind of apprenticeship or internship where hopefully I will learn how to actually do the job of a rabbi as a whole, rather than individual pieces of it. They have asked me to write an article introducing myself for their magazine. And I'm really struggling to write something not boring; what I have reads like a list of the places I've lived, worked and volunteered with the Jewish community, like a very pedestrian covering letter. So, if you were a member of a synagogue and there was a new intern about to join, what would you want to know about them? I've included the (slightly redacted) draft below the cut.

One of my next year teachers has set us for our pre-class homework over the summer "read a book". Like, literally pick up a book and read it. Presumably there's a point to this, I was planning to read some books anyway, but I assume there's more to it than just ticking the box to say, yup, I read a book. Suggestions welcome! If an eminent professor of Bible told you to read a book, what would you pick? I know the prof is an SF fan, she's trying to start a theological SF reading group.

The Triple Lock

I want to write something on this because it's been in the news lately, and people have been misunderstanding me on social media. Which is a little awkward as some of my friends are of pension age. There's nothing new here for people who have been paying attention.

For non-British friends: "The triple lock" is a policy device that's been around for about 14 years which says that every year the state pension will rise by one of (a) the rise in average wages; (b) the rate of inflation; or (c) 2.5%, whichever is the greatest.

This is mathematically unsustainable. It means that when the economy improves, wages rise, and the pension rises... and when the economy gets worse, inflation rises, and the pension rises. And if neither happens, the pension rises anyway by 2.5%. It's a one-way ratchet that means that for so long as it exists, the state pension will continue to rise compared to average earnings. At some point - given that tax income is very loosely related to average earnings - that will obviously be unaffordable.

This is not me saying that the state pension is too generous; I don't know enough about that to have a clear opinion about it. It is me saying that at some point, the triple lock will have to go - no matter how politically difficult that may be.

I have acquired a clarinet and as of today, I know the fingering for five notes (C, D, E, F, and G), and only squeaked a couple of times while figuring out the register key (which pops it up an octave). Fortunately music reading is music reading, so my ability to read music for a clarinet is just like reading music for a guitar is just like reading music for a trumpet is just like reading music for a hymn.

I wonder how some of the hymns are for a clarinet?

It is a red clarinet, and I am rather excited to get to play more on it, but I am also having to remind myself that learning is no more than an hour a day because my mouth muscles get tired.

I'm hoping that the delivery tomorrow of the new dressers from Ikea don't come in the middle of my assigned practice time. I almost started looking up my Uncle's phone number on the internet to call him up and ask, "UNCLE ANDREW WHY WILL THE CLARINET NOT MAKE NOISE???" and I shifted my chin and then it made noise! I have to relax my face a lot more than I did playing trumpet.

Gaming day, even more than usual!

First up was our Stardew game, which was... well, it was full of technical weirdness for one of our players - they kept getting desync'd, but a restart on their part did nothing - but otherwise pretty good!

Vintage Story was also pretty good... except for the part where one of the players accidentally set the base ON FIRE and we lost a whole bunch of shit. I just. Dude. DUDE. No flamethrowers in the base, that is a NEW RULE, an accidental misclick and... shiiit. :|

Anyway luckily? we're moving to a new location, and uh the move has been slow so far buuuuuut... yeah. We've got shit everywhere and unorganised, might as well pack it up and move it now, kinda thing. I lost most of the stuff I personally had earmarked but whatever. It's annoying, but I can deal. Luckily the only thing I'd actually made was some nice fanned cobblestone, and the hardest part of that was figuring out how to make it. The recipe in the handbook is not intuitive to say the least, it's got some hidden rules. But now I know (thank you forums!) it'll be easy enough to remake!

Other than that, I went to the supermarket, and also got delicious charcoal chicken for dinner, mwahaha :D

Today I took "T" to an eye doctor appointment. His nearsightedness is slightly worse than last time. He could probably do without new glasses, but if I got new ones he can get new ones too. At least the old ones are close enough to be useful as back-up glasses.

Afterwards, we picked up some food at Trader Joe's. I took him home for some food, and then it was off to another day of bicycle "camp".

Later, I took him to his Friday karate group class. Unfortunately, it was a wasted trip because it's Thursday.

This is a new edition of my "initials for people mentioned in my journal" with links to Dreamwidth instead of Livejournal. (The old version is dated 2019 January 1, roughly when I started using decorated initials instead of just unadorned "X" initials.) The rest of this is just a copy, except for replacing "Livejournal.com" with "Dreamwidth.org".

For several years, I've mentioned most people in my journal by an initial. But there are more people than letters of the alphabet, so sometimes that's ambiguous. I thought about how to avoid the ambiguity, and I decided that the best way is to assemble a glossary. I'll keep the glossary here, and revise it as needed.

I have left some initials in the default color, and colored duplicates to help distinguish between them. In some cases, I use different fonts too: an ordinary serif font except as noted. If the colors and fonts are not clear enough, the initials also link back to this message.

Rather annoyingly, the colors and fonts don't always show up in mobile view. I'm not sure why, but it's probably just something Livejournal hasn't gotten around to coding.

Although some of the entries describe some people as "my" friends, or "J's" or "T's", we mostly share friends; those descriptions just distinguish between who knows them best, or knew them first.

I read more Death of the Author today. After a slow start, I'm getting into it now.

I reprinted the drilling guides for the 3D design project. The ones I printed yesterday didn't print at actual size. It's weird how many hoops I had to go through to get it to print at the nominal size. I exported the SVG drawing as PNG. I cropped the PNG to smaller than the size of a page of printer paper (at the PGN's default dots per inch). I imported the PNG into a Libre Office writer document, and told it how large it was supposed to be. And I printed.

I took "T" to another day of bike "camp", then returned to take him to karate.

While waiting for T's karate, I went to the Comcast office to cancel the useless cellular service. For a while I've had both it and T-Mobile on the same phone, and I've watched which has more dead zones. There are far fewer dead zones with T-Mobile, and I only rarely saw spots that were T-Mobile dead zones but not also Comcast dead zones. Anyway, although Comcast in general has terrible customer service, the in-person customer service is very good at the location I visited.

I also dropped into a music lesson place, and asked about prices. I thought "T" might be interested in piano lessons, since he liked playing with our (electronic) piano when it was in his room. I also thought he might be interested in voice lessons, since he signed up for singing class at school for next year. And a few years ago I took "J" to singing lessons, and I think she enjoyed them a lot, though we weren't so thrilled about the commutes to the locations of the teachers. Anyway, they charged $54 per lesson for piano or voice, and $50 per lesson for guitar or bowed string. Funny that the ones I was more interested in were more expensive.

I took J along when I went to pick up T and take him to a game store to play Pokémon. Then J and I had a little ice cream date, followed by a trip to water her P-patch.

Finally, I returned to bring T home from the game store.
